    Seeking

Post by Prixlezub on Thu Jul 27, 2017 4:20 pm

    Time: ???
    Date: July 27, 0008

That drumming, that ceaseless thud and rumble rang in his ears. It resonated in his metallic bones and vibrated in his head. The noise was enough to make demon’s lip curl, chromatic teeth revealed to shimmer like curved daggers against the hellish heat of his magma-filled maw. It had only been little more than twenty four hours, perhaps more, since the strange energy signature had come to settle beneath his lair, but it had already consumed his thoughts. Each waking ponderance circled obsessively over its presence.

What was it? Where did it come from? What was its intention?

The only answer to all of his questions was obvious; he needed to probe, to examine, and perhaps ultimately subjugate this strange being before it got too cozy within his territory. The size of its energy signature perhaps should have been enough to make the demon prince reconsider prodding it, or even remaining in his fiery, hellish territory. But millions of years spent in a perpetual warring state, thousands upon thousands of years of brutal lessons and bloody warfare tempered the prince’s fears until they were indistinguishable from wrath. Until it seemed, even to him, like they never existed within his heart.

But that did not mean the demon prince was a stranger to erring on the side of caution. He knew well enough what could befall one who rushed into battle without a well-considered strategy. Already he had set in place measures to gather more information about this enigmatic intruder.

Down through the maze-like lave tubes that ran from end to end of his immense domain, something slithered and swam through the molten rock as effortlessly as an eel through water. Obsidian scales flexed in time with the undulations of an immense, serpentine body, tipped with a smooth, glossy head. Streamlined for the sake of swift passage through the depths of the demon’s lair that had been submerged beneath a layer of boiling magma, It’s face was tapered into a fine point, the black stone that made up its features cut in a way that suggested glowing orange eyes. Though there was no sight to them, as these were but openings that revealed that this black, shimmering beast was hollow. It was nothing more than one of the demon’s many constructs. It twisted about as it swam through these subterranean channels.

As if spurred on by some clairvoyant knowledge, it swiftly dipped and slithered where the tubes came to fork and split. The construct navigated its way down, down, and down further. All the while, it was drawn by the immense, brilliant presence that burned through the dense layers of rock like one had somehow sank an entire sun beneath the planet’s mantle. It made it easy to track, child’s-play even. But as for pinpoint precision of where in depths of the planet it may be, that proved to be more than difficult.

The lava tubed were winding, immense to the point of stretching miles and miles beneath the ground in twisting, curling rivers. Some paths lead to a dead end, others simply branched off and snaked away. The closer the obsidian construct came to the entity’s presence, the more it felt as if each channel was going to lead directly to it no matter what path it chose. Though its master knew far better. Each channel was quickly inhabited by a twisting, plated wurm; their ebony scales reflected the white hot glow of the molten rock that surrounded them. All of them slithered through every available lava tube, snaking over each other as they came to branches in the underground channels, their black stony scales gliding over each other soundlessly. Such was the prince’s craftsmanship, to create arcane machines that operated as quietly as a living being of flesh and blood.

Each of their pointed snouts tracked the odd energy signature, navigating the maze to the best of their creator’s ability. In stand-by, they operated of their own will in a sort of hive-mind mentality. But when active, they acted as a group, all conjoined to a single will. A fel, demonic overlord that commanded their expansive numbers as easily as one would command a single entity.

The tubes were winding and deep, lined with jagged stone. Minerals that were not subjected to buckling beneath the intense heat of the planet’s ever boiling inner layers stuck out like harsh teeth. They scraped against the ebony scales of these odd beings that were bold enough to traverse this far down into the molten depths of the world, and threatened to bite into the shiny, glassen armor should these slithering things venture too close.

Every so often the jagged pathways opened up, widening from trickling, claustrophobic molten rivers to abiding straits of burning, liquid stone. They branched off from one another, webbing through the crust of the planet like vessels forking away from an artery. Yet, as it had been shown, each other them looked like the right way, each of them looked like they would point directly towards this mysterious entity that lingered beneath the demon prince’s domain.

But, they could not all lead to the mysterious thing. Some ended in dead ends, others simply branched and branched until they grew too thin to traverse. Others still simply looped and broke in what seemed like an infinity of paths, damning whatever dared to venture through them to an endless swim beneath the planet’s surface. Thankfully, there was a boon to sending so many obsidian creatures down at once:

One of them had to find the right path, right?

Numerous slithering things roamed the depths, thousands of stony scales twisted and flexed beneath the fiery magma. They glided past the sharp mineral teeth, the crystalline daggers that threatened to bite and stab into the armored plating of these massive, burrowing serpents. Far beyond the deeper levels of the magma tubes, their commander, their master, paced within a stony chamber. Its walls stretched high above his horned crown, jagged and shimmering as they reflected the fiery light that was given off by his mane. This place, this geode, left behind in the draining of a massive underground reservoir was where the prince retreated to in order to harness his focus.

It was quiet here, or at least relatively so, so long as that thing deep beneath his lair continued to pulsate and hum in his senses. It spurred him to press onward with his army of serpentine scouts, willing them to thrash and race through those underground channels of molten rock. Ever hastening, ever watchful to any new path that may open up to where the being may reside.

They threw themselves left, right, but ever down in the direction of the blinding, inescapable glow. One of these paths had to lead to the source, one of them had to open up and reveal where this monstrous, mysterious being was hiding...

A left, a right, a dive... The pressure this far down beneath the planet’s surface was crushing. It threatened to press those many obsidian plates flat against the construct’s body, flush to the point where movement would be difficult to the point of impossible. But, somehow, it pressed on. Urged by a single will, one of the constructs managed to slither and worm its way through the planet’s molten veins in the proper direction of the strange being that lingered beneath the volcanic territory. The jagged, crystalline lined passage opened up and spat the entity of black stone out of the underground maze. What lay before it was a massive molten pocket. It stretched wide beneath the rocky ceiling that walled off the rest of the planet’s upper layers from this fiery sea. Perhaps it had been spat out beneath the ever shifting tectonic plating? The possibility that this was simply an abnormally large lake of molten rock was rendered defunct within seconds.

The bottom of this massive pool was beyond the point of perception, and the pressure was enough to make an otherwise silently moving entity groan with every slithering movement through the molten, white-hot rock that surrounded it. It scales chipped with every bend, all save for the solid, angular head that stabbed ever effortlessly into the liquid stone as it traveled.

But, there was also something else down here. The source of the massive energy signature was now bright beyond blinding, as if the construct was face to face with the spiritual equivalent of a sun. The resounding thud of its vitals resonated through the magma, subsonic ripples creating a pulsing current all around its being. Yet, its form was still a mystery, hidden within the molten rock. From its life energy, the being seemed to be curled in upon itself, tucked tightly, fetal in its posture. What could be discerned readily, aside from the balled up position of the odd intruder thousands of leagues beneath the demon prince’s land, was that it was massive.

Even curled in on itself, it made the burrowing obsidian wurm resemble something more akin to the slimy, lowly kind that burrowed through soil and filth. Perhaps it was even lesser, as the immense being slowly turned over with the wash of magma pushing and pulling it with the molten tide.

Dare the prince attempt to investigate this oddity further?

The tubes opened up, and the prince witnessed as one construct managed to penetrate beyond the very plating of this planet. It had to, for this space was far greater than any underground chasm that he had ever stumbled across while navigating the lava tubes on his own. The rocky ceiling above him stretched onward for miles upon miles. Jagged rock and mineral deposits jutted out from beneath the underside of the massive plate in an upside-down ridge of mountains. But, as the prince willed his drone onward, he found the ease of controlling it started to lessen, as the construct’s movements grew stiff and hindered. Likely it was a result of the immense pressure this far beneath the planet’s surface. He could feel the resistance from the otherwise streamlined and serpentine machine as scales groaned and ground against each other, threatening to crack and break.

Oh, but he could not let himself give up yet, not when he was so close. He had to be, with the energy signature now so close to his obsidian scout that it was increasingly painful to see through its synthetic senses. From the geode that he was standing in, the outer most pair of eyes on either side of his face were aglow with blinding white, his fiery pupils dilated fully as he channeled arcane energies to dictate the movements of the construct that managed to make it through the maze of stony tubes. The center and innermost eyes simply remained focused toward the ground as he considered what he was witnessing, retaining their usual slit-like pupils that wavered and flickered like a candle’s flame.

This thing was immense. Granted, he had suspected it would be, there was no other way that this entity would be visible through several miles of solid rock if it were not. It dwarfed the construct, which in turn had dwarfed him by several tens of meters. This thing had to be the size of a mountain, he thought to himself. Maybe it was even the size of an entire range of them.

But that was not enough to make an assessment of what to do about this oddity. He needed to get closer, to examine it further. His skull felt as if it was going to split from the pulsating of its vitals at nearly point blank range between it and the drone he sent down, and the life energy of this entity was beginning to make him feel as if his very eye sockets were going to boil and melt if he subjected himself to staring at its aura any further. Smoke plumed from his grill openings and a thick, crimson lip curled into a snarl.

Would it be simpler, easier to simply leave this neighbor down below be, and think nothing more of the pulsating beat that drummed through the underground caverns of his domain? Certainly. He could have even decided to simply pack up and leave... If he were a lesser demon and a complete coward, that is.

Instead, the prince willed the machine to delve onward, through agony, through pain. It would not be enough to deter the ancient demonic royal from finding out what exactly he was dealing with. He brought the construct to glide just above the surface of the entity’s curled posture, focusing its arcane energies to project from the slits at the front of its stony, plated face in an attempt to scan it for any useful information.

Despite the pressure, despite the searing pain within the demon’s eyes, he still found the will to go onward with his investigation. Whether it was brave or simply stupid would have yet to be known. Meanwhile, all around the construct, the pressure was starting to take its toll upon its stony shell.

It had never been made for diving this far deep beneath the planet’s surface. Black stone groaned as the construct stiffly made its way forward through the dense mantle, and with a sharp crackle, a sliver snaked itself across the surface of a row of scales. Another forked out in a web across the solid surface of the construct’s face. Whatever the demon prince wanted to glean from this entity, he would need to harness the little time he had at his disposal with his single successful drone.

The pressure, the very weight of the mantle and depth this far down beneath the planet’s surface, was beginning to crush the construct’s form.

But, as he commanded his expendable subject toward the blindingly bright energy signature, it would become clear that it was not just some curved thing floating along beneath the dense, crusty layer of the planet’s surface. Dense, jagged spines rose up to meet the slithering machine of black stone, akin to rocky cliff faces and dangerous rocky mountain peaks. Though oddly, they were not so random as the ridges of the mountain range that separated the tundra from the rest of the main continent. They were oddly uniform, gently growing in size to peak at the center of the mass, before sloping back down. All of them were neatly packed into rows of five, like the spines of a great, armored beast. In some places, the stony outer surface seemed to fragment into spiny plates, or perhaps especially dense scales. Though the greatest peak of the entity’s mountainous terrain, was a single, curving spire that curled haphazardly out of a single smooth section of the tucked up enigma.

Under Pressure: Prixlezub’s construct has three (3) turns to gather information on the mysterious entity before it collapses in on itself from the mantle’s pressure.

    Currently Gathered Insight:
-The entity has a rocky, jagged outer surface.
-The entity is massive enough to be mistaken for a mountain range

Post by Prixlezub on Thu Jul 27, 2017 11:24 pm

Prixlezub’s claws flexed against the hardened floor of the subterranean geode as he willed the construct forward. The pain within his head seemed to throb like someone had stabbed spikes through his skull, and poured acid into his eye sockets. But, there was a reward to his suffering. The construct had managed to glean some new information about the odd stranger that floated down beneath the planet’s surface.

Stony hide reached up to meet him in stony spires, jagged peaks lined the entity’s curved surface in one smooth, sweeping array. In a way it reminded the demon prince of the beasts that used to roam the Plane of Mechanical Hellfire, the locomotogephors -or at least the newer generations- tended to sport spiky armor, the results of devouring tons upon tons of mineral rich stone and metals. Was that what he had come across this far down beneath his domain?

No, it could not be, the recent mutations of the locomotogephors before he had been swept away from his kingdom had been far smaller. This one rivaled the size of the first generation of those monstrous locomotive-esque demons that tunneled deep beneath the red sands and black mountains. Or perhaps, the first generation were the ones that rivaled it. With the entity curled up like it was, it made things difficult to discern in regards to its size.

It made things difficult in regards to many aspects of this entity.

The construct glided along, finding a smooth patch upon the otherwise jagged surface of the strange entity. Odd, it seemed to resemble scaly plating... Though the prince’s wonder was short-lived as a sudden jagged spire sprouted up before the slithering, and fracturing construct. With a low growl he willed the construct to ascend sharply upward, following the curve of the stony protrusion closely to the point of being a hair’s breadth away from scraping against it. the very motion of making the construct turn was a feat of the prince’s mental strength, and of the physical strength of the construct’s being. Fractured obsidian groaned and crackled sharply, like a plate of super-heated glass fracturing upon being rapidly cooled. It’s constricted body rigidly convulsed itself into an upward motion as its past smooth, serpentine movements were reduced to harsh zigging and zagging as it struggled to stay mobile. The demon was certain that a few scales along the length of the construct’s body had broke away from the rest of the arcane machination.

But, there was still enough of it left to control, to use to his purposes. Thus, he willed the construct onward, dipping it harshly back down with the mental equivalent of a harsh shove. There had been something he had noticed before upon the initial scan; parts of the entity that were broken up from large spires into smaller plates. He willed the construct to follow the areas of these jagged, scale-like portions to see where they lead.

Following the smaller stony plates that covered the mysterious entity, they meshed neatly with each other, layering like pebbles and stones that littered the base of a mountainside. Sharp, jagged, they were just as treacherous in their own ways for the serpent made of blackened glass. Though as it traveled along the more broken, scale-like path, it would be noticed that the stony layers began to curve and bend. They sank and created deep canyons, but not in the way that a natural canyon would. These seemed to curve like flesh and thick hide wrapping over bone, the lines of muscular portions made out ever so subtly in the lines of jagged stone. Biceps, shoulders, a forearm... The plates mashed themselves together as the construct traveled further down, and pressed themselves outward from what may have been, just perhaps, an elbow. Another jagged peak stabbed into the sea of magma, curving upward in a sharp, rocky saber.

The pressure sent another snaking fracture along the obsidian serpent’s body with a sharp crack. It’s constricted movements would grow only more rigid and encumbered as it traveled down beneath the drifting entity. It took but odd shift for an entire row of glassy scales to break away in a glistening rain of black shrapnel. Beneath, the orange core was exposed in a long, winding strip down the side of the slithering arcane machine.

But, what was a mere sacrifice in the name of discovery?

The demon prince’s wayward probe would soon come to discover that was not the only curved spike that jutted out from the entity’s limbs. Another could be discerned through the molten earth, and another still seemed manifest from the murky, heated depths. It was as if they were steadily emerging from a bank of dense fog. Three of these stony spikes erupted from three rocky scale-encrusted elbows. Further along, they were mirrored upon the other side; this being was now decidedly hexapedal, or maybe further, as the thick, stony limbs that had been found were obviously fore limbs. However, the rest of the limbs seemed to be tucked tightly against the underside of the entity. This would make things difficult to discern along the prince’s journey of identifying this immense and increasingly foreboding monstrosity.

Thick, black smoke plumed from his grill and roiled from between his curved fangs. The effort of keeping the construct on the move despite the crushing pressure within the planet was surprisingly draining, as the throbbing his head continued to pound, only encouraged on by the burning against the back of his eye sockets as the demon’s senses were constantly being overloaded by the being’s sheer vital presence. Even through the construct’s visual arrays, however arcane and remote, the demon had to fight to keep himself from detaching from the construct as he commanded it.

Though, as before, there was no less reward for the demon’s effort. The scans as the construct went along its suicide swim through the sea of magma revealed new information. The smaller, stony plates curved and curled over the side of the entity in a way that reminded the prince of... limbs? Yes, they had to be limbs of some sort, with the way they dipped and bunched like dense, muscled arms. Perhaps that was what they indeed were; massive, armored forelimbs of some sort.

The demon’s brow furrowed as he urged the construct to press onward, knowing full well that the arcane machine was on borrowed time so long as the deep pressure was crushing its obsidian plating. A group of scales shattered and fell away, lost to the depths of the planet’s mantle in a shimmering, black cloud.

The prince’s suspicions were proved partially true when the obsidian wurm came to meet a long, jutting saber that curved from what appeared to be some form of joint. An elbow, maybe? The construct rigidly yawed to slither past it, the act just as painful to witness as it was damaging to the magical drone. By now, a large section of its fiery orange core was exposed, flickering and flaring in large, licking arcs of arcane energy.

If the pressure did not destroy the obsidian wurm, then the core’s growing instability would certainly claim it when it detonated. Until then, however, he commanded the construct on. No victory was ever gained by backing down from a challenge, after all.

Post by Universal NPC on Fri Jul 28, 2017 10:01 pm

Dipping down to survey the underside of this mysterious entity was no small feat. The pressure, already crushing to the point of nearly debilitating, pardoned the construct no less from destruction as it squeezed inward upon the remaining scaly plates of black volcanic glass. Scales fractured and ultimately shattered with a sharp snap and a crackle of breaking glass. Another cloud of glassy, razor sharp debris peeled away from the construct, and bright orange arc whipped out from the fresh wound. Arcane energy crackled and hummed like static electricity, before retreating back beneath the layers of obsidian.

It would not be much longer before it fell to pieces now, no matter what the demon prince sought to accomplish. But if a challenge was what the demon wanted, a challenge was what he certainly would get.

The entity, as immense as it was, had only barely been observed from the brief time that the constructed had been orbiting it through the fiery sea of molten earth. Following the line of the limbs onward, it was difficult where exactly they ended and the limbs upon the other side of the entity began. Such was how tightly woven together they were. Though the demon’s luck may change, as there was a sudden, resonating rumble that emanated from within it. Stone ground against stone, the sound reminiscent of a mountain slide as the mysterious thing shifted and flexed. For a moment those massive limbs twitched, and pulled aside to reveal that each of those thick, rocky arms were tipped with massive claws. They curved and spread like a shovel’s spade, dense and obviously powerful. There was another low, earth-shaking groan, and the monstrous being curled back into its fetal-esque resting position, but not before a single twitch, simple to it, but seismic to anything and everything else around, churned the magma around it.

The resulting riptide of molten earth dragged the construct down, and ultimately to the source of the magma’s sudden toiling. As there were six limbs above, so too were they below. The construct was whipped past six equally dense, tree-trunk like rear limbs as it was spun through a fiery whirlpool. Each of them were just as armored as the last, covered in dense, stony plating. All of them had to be several times as thick as the construct was long. Though they oddly were not as ferociously clawed the fore-limbs. They had been tipped with blunt, stubby toes that resembled the hooves of a rhinoceros than any burrowing creature.

Under Pressure: Prixlezub’s construct has one (1) turn to gather information on the mysterious entity before it collapses in on itself from the mantle’s pressure.

Another snap, another crack, the demon’s scout had lost another chunk of its scaly plating. An already arduous reconnaissance became even more so, as the construct’s core sparked and arced wide with a threatening hum. Likely it would only be a few moments before the construct would be rendered completely inoperable, not that it mattered. Thus far, the demon was certain it would be soon he would retire from this venture. The throbbing pain in his skull was beginning to aggravate into a full on agony, every sound, every little bubble and gurgle of the lava within his abode began to grate upon his senses. It was to the point where his own heartbeat grew to be an irritating as his pulse throbbed within his head. Just a little further, Prixlezub encouraged himself, as he willed it to journey on.

Following the curve of the entity’s limbs, the demon witnessed as the construct came across where the limbs met, cris-crossing over each other in a way that made it nigh impossible to figure out where one hefty, powerful forelimb ended and another began. The six forelimbs of the being were densely woven against each other, tucked up like a developing offspring.

But, there was a defeaning rumble, like the world was coming down around the construct deep beneath the planet’s crust. Its limbs shifted with a harsh grinding groan of stone upon stone, and its massive claws unfurled from where they had been tucked up tightly against the underside of the entity. They were massive, spade-like, perfect for burrowing and digging. This thing... was it meant to be this far down within the planet?

It had to be, and yet, the demon prince could not help but feel a shadow of uncertainty regarding the entity’s presence.

It looked as if it would be able to burrow up easily through the planet’s rocky exterior, perhaps even bypass through his lair if it so desired like a mole tunneled through soft, fertile earth. He had little time to linger upon that realization however, as there was yet another low rumble. Immediately the magma churned and roiled, before dragging the construct along the bottom of the immense, curled up entity.

His already throbbing skull started to swim nauseously as the shattered obsidian wurm was tossed this way and that with the riptide of molten metals and stone. The demon’s claws dug against the stony floor of his lair, his limbs shuddering as he fought to keep himself upright. Though, with a snarl and a dull thud, the prince was forced to sit upon the floor, his clawed front limbs splayed in an effort to keep himself grounded while mustering his focus upon the construct. Fighting the current of molten magma proved impossible, as the slithering, serpentine arcane machined was pulled along and tossed about helplessly. But, the tumbling, spinning ride managed to reach a smoother current, and as the obsidian wurm settled itself out, and the prince witnessed the entity had six rear limbs, just as it had six limbs in the front.

Though these... They did not seem like digging tool. Their toes were not tipped with cruel, shovel-like claws. They were like hooves, blunt and stubby. Smoke plumed from the demon’s maw in frustration, his thorny brow furrowing. This was not insight, this told him little to nothing else about the entity. he had to keep looking, he had to keep searching, to find as much as he could about this... Oddity.

An oddity that was looking more and more like a possible thread the more he gathered about it.
