Well, she was not wrong. This bear, however it came to be, was incredibly strong. It was as strong as it was large even. Despite his supernatural powers, his ability to decay whatever he touched at will, his host would not hold for a minute should this beast manage to sink its claws and teeth into him. But, if this creature was not kept occupied, it would be increasingly difficult to figure out a way back home from their confined quarters.

Though the undead superfiend was quickly coming to the conclusion that the only way home would be through the red armored bear.

”Ssss! Do what you can, Sssamhain. Either way, thisss will be the lassst time that beassst thinkss to interfere in busssinesss that isss not hisss!” He called over the bear’s din.

Evidently, the discharge from his shotgun had hurt its ears, and the ceaseless ringing had sent it into a confused rage- or so its howling and snarling suggested. It’s struggles were brief, as just as it tried to get its bearings, Samhain slammed into its side and brought it down. The forest was shaken into a chorus and rustling underbrush and the ground shook beneath its weight. But prior to its fall, the undead noticed something about its body, a detail that made Mortis thankful he had reloaded as swiftly as he did. Though his fingers were deftly seeking out the pouch he had stashed away a certain disembodied eye in.

There was no thick armor on the underside of its throat. Its surface was just as plush and covered with fur as its hindquarters. He knew his weapon well, Mortis was well aware of how easily it could knock a hole that was wide enough to sever a limb in anything and anyone that was dumb enough to encourage his wrath within one hundred yards. But, ripping open the throat of a thrashing beast of this caliber was a test of precision if he had ever seen one.  It would be a tricky shot to pull off, but it would be worth it if it meant getting Samhain and himself out of these woods pelvis intactus.

”Good horssse.” He hissed under his breath, though the message was just as psychic as it was verbal. ”Keep him busssy.”

With a flick of his talons, he opened one of the pouches upon his utility belt.  From within the rotting green cloth, he withdrew a decrepit glazed over eye, its pale blue-ish green gaze staring lifelessly ahead. Dried strands of its shredded optic nerve dangled limply from the back, the white of the disembodied organ stained with brown blotches where veins had ruptured and bled beneath its surface from long ago, during its cruel removal.

The eye was brought up and pushed into the right socket upon his skull with his thumb and forefinger, and the moment it settled itself within the cavity it seemingly sprung back to life. It rolled with a sickening squelch into Mortis’ skull, the pupil dilating and contracting briefly as it swiveled and settled upon the thrashing bear. A ghostly red glow burned within the depths of its pupil like its contact with the living corpse activated something inside of it, cutting through the hazy film that glassed over the dead organ.

All the while, he leveled with shotgun upon his quarry with a flex of a bony arm, his fingers curling sharply around the dual triggers of the firearm. It took only a brisk squeeze, and the long twin barrels spat flame and smoke .With a deafening crack two lead slugs split the air, and the supple hide of the Arzuros’ throat.

The bear toppled to the ground with a grunt, and she could hear the air that rushed from its gut the moment her shoulder had rammed into it. Yet, despite her efforts, she could not see any blood oozing from where she had sank her teeth into its furry hide. No matter how much she chomped and pulled, trying to rip open the massive beast was like chewing on a thick span of hard leather. It was nearly reminiscent of the bit Mortis would place in her mouth when he took her out riding in the earlier days.

Earlier days when the both of them were not so close as they were now, and she was simply clever.

Her efforts did little to keep the bear down either, it seemed as if the only thing keeping the animal from getting to its feet was being disoriented from the blast of her master’s shotgun, and its sheer bulk getting tangled and hung up in the underbrush. A weighty paw swung in her direction, and she reared away with a squeal as its claws flashed just in front of her chest in a bright red blur. Among the chaos, she heard her master’s command within her skull, a hiss that managed to make itself heard over the massive bear’s violent protests.

Do what she could, keep the bear busy.

    Gladly, Master!

It would be her pleasure even.

Her iron shod hooves lashed out as she returned to the ground, burying the quartet of spikes that lined the bottom of each shoe into the bear’s gut. Her weight pressed them deep into its hide, making an effort to shove the bear back to the ground and pin it prone where her Master could shoot it with the boom-stick.

Spade-like claws swept through the air, narrowly avoiding the mare as she reared away in time. There was only a loud whistle of air passing between their sharpened tips as they raked by harmlessly. Only a patch of fresh spring ferns were torn asunder from the Arzuros’ wrath, the ground exploding in a spray of dirt and pulverized dead leaves as its paw slammed into it.

The armored bear’s maw flung open in a guttural howl, swiping this way and that as it tried to roll its bulky form off the soft earth that gave readily beneath its thrashing. With each roll it seemed to only dig a deeper rut into the forest floor. Then, with another sharp snap, it felt something bite into the skin of its throat. Flesh tore beneath the lead slug, and a fresh rivulet of blood eagerly flowed in a crimson river from the gash that had been torn into its neck. The wound was deep, as the round’s exit had shredded away the bear’s hide to reveal soft tendons and delicate musculature beneath.

But, it unfortunately had not cut deep enough to sever an artery as the undead had hoped.

Immediately after, a weight slammed into its gut, and the bear wheezed as its middle caved inward beneath the weight of the monstrous animated horse carcass and air was swiftly kicked out of its lungs.

The bear’s bright red eyes stared wide, pupils contracted in pain. Agony bloomed in its gut from where the horse’s spiked hooves had dug deeply into its defenseless  gut, rupturing something beneath its thick furry hide. Though it could not feel it quite yet, the mare had managed to pop one of the bear’s organs like a water balloon, and blood began to pool from the unseen wound as readily as it trickled from the deep gash upon the underside of its neck.

Another dull roar boomed from the animal’s throat, and it made a violent effort to thrash itself back onto its feet. Its claws swept in wide, vicious arcs, and its armored body rolled to and for as it looked to try and get purchase upon something to pull its hefty body upright again. That something was anything and everything that was nearby, regardless of whether it was alive, dead, or undead.

A sharp snap sliced through the bear’s howling, and a spray of red leaped from its furry throat. his shot had managed to slice its hide, but with its struggling, he still managed to miss its jugular despite the assassin’s eye that glared unnaturally from his eye socket.

”Ssss!” Mortis’s gaze dropped to his shotgun briefly as he cracked open the twin barrels and roughly clapped out the spent shells onto the grass.

But, there was a silver lining to his misfortune, although he was unable to cut open the bear’s veins, he could sense the pain in the bear’s mind as his horse slammed down upon its gut. Something popped beneath her hooves, likely an organ of some sort. With that in mind, the undead superfiend expected the creature’s struggles to be cut short in due time from internal blood loss, or perhaps sceptic shock depending on what Samhain had ruptured. The burning red pupil of his borrowed eye dilated, the closest thing to glee that could be discerned upon the undead’s skeletal face.

”Yessss!” He cheered, his claws immediately going to his utility belt pocket once more to withdraw two more slugs. They were quickly dropped into the back of the barrels and he snapped the gun closed in one swift motion.

But just as he brought the gun to level with the animal once again, he witnessed what soon sent a chill of sheer dread down his spine and a sickening feeling in his empty gut. One of the bear’s paws, in an effort to swing itself back onto its feet and fight off his horse, had landed solidly into the mare. Though such things were a conscious risk when venturing beyond the ISO’s jurisdiction, it did not make the undead care any less for the well being of his friend. Especially since friends were incredibly scarce not only out here, but for Mortis in general.

”SSSAMHAIN!” His gravelled voice cracked into a hoarse screech. Immediately he reached out to his horse across their psychic bond. Sssamhain, are you injured? Damn thisss bear, itsss will to live isss too sstubborn for itsss own good.

By now it was becoming apparent that simply staying back while Samhain kept the bear busy was not going to be a viable option as this fight stretched on. But in order for the mare the get back over to him, there would need to be a window of opportunity present to them both. He had just the idea in mind to make it happen, as he contacted the mare once more.

I am going to dissstract the beassst, while it isss fighting itsss own thoughtss, you run back to me. His thoughts urgently hissed to his hooved companion.

Psychic energies focused within Mortis’ mind, and with insidious intent they snaked into the rampaging armored bear’s mind. Among the confusion and pain within the animal’s brain, something began to stir. Whispers, hissing and muttering in ways that pulled at the fragile strands of its focus, unraveling its attention and drawing it every which way until it tangled in on itself.

    Run! Run away!

What is over there? Is it another bear?

How good it would be, to be back in the cave... sleeping, cozy, warm!

You are bleeding! Lick your wounds!

    YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!

All the while, Mortis raised his shotgun level with the bear’s heaving chest. The single eye that stared from his eye socket fixed itself unwaveringly down the sight, the pupil blazing like a red hot coal with unnatural energy. With a squeeze of a rancid claw, he fired both slugs towards its chest with a deafening crack of flame and smoke.

Blood spat from the bear’s neck, and a deep gash split through the fur upon its neck in a bright red streak. For but a moment she could see the tendons and musculature beneath, before it was flooded with bright crimson that flowed like a small river from the wound. She too had noticed the pain that welled in the bear’s mind, if only by the ability of her master, and her link to him.

She too realized something had ruptured, or at least had been damaged enough to make agony blossom within the bear’s mind like a dreaded, hellish flower.

In the same moment, a red, serrated blur jumped from the ground to meet her. The bear’s claws, in its effort to right itself in the face of its injuries, slammed its paw into her side. Bone buckled and snapped with a sharp protest like many dry, dead branches breaking at once upon stone. A sharp squeal erupted from the undead mare as she was shoved aside, fragments of her exposed ribs fell to the ground in a brief, ivory rain. Unlike her master, she lacked a certain physical resilience that made her as stubbornly whole as the Sisters had made Mortis. She staggered to the side, her hooves kicking up a spray of moist earth  and shaggy green tufts of spring grass. Where there was once a cage of sun bleached bone, there was now a dark cavity lined with the jagged edges of what remained of Samhain’s ribs. The wound gaped back towards her attacker like her side had sprouted a fearsome maw filled with dagger-like fangs.

Her lip curled back as she side stepped out of the ferns, a hoarse whinny bellowing from her throat. Damn that bear indeed! Her mummified nostrils flared and icy breath jetted from them with sharp snorts and puffs. She wanted to stomp that thing’s skull in, she wanted to crush the stupid, drooling expression off of its face!  She shook her head and snorted again, but stayed her wrath as she heard her master’s voice inside her head.

It broke my ribs, Master, but I am still able to fight.

Alas, fighting was not the plan her master had in mind, at least not as they were now. Naturally the horse had a number of objections to the idea.

Run back?! But master, that would put you in harm’s way! You are safer shooting it from where you are while I keep it from standing up again.

She could be quicker on her feet, she could figure out how to stay out of the bear’s reach. But all the same, she knew her master to be a crafty sort, although too brash for his own good- at least from her viewpoint. Even if he did place the both of them in harm’s way, she knew he had the means to get them out of it from experience. She glared back at the thrashing bear once more as she felt her master’s focus start to build from her side of their link, and her long face shook from side to side with a huff.

But if this is your plan to get us out of these woods, I shall follow it as I have followed you before.

So be it, she would follow his mysterious plan, but not before she got some payback in.

Samhain lunged forward and slammed her hooves into the armored bear’s ribs with a furious bellow, before she reared back and turned to gallop back towards her boomstick weilding Master.

It’s paw collided with something hard and brittle, and a sharp snapping sound mingled with shrill screaming from both the horse and its corpse owner. Ivory fell from the hole the bear’s paw had punched into the undead mare’s side, and with it the beast had managed to right itself onto its feet. It heaved with a grunt, hot breath pluming from its snout in white clouds upon the chilly, damp air. The earth was torn and rent into jagged ruts beneath its claws as the Arzuros got its footing, and another guttural growl rumbled in its throat as it set its drooping red eyes upon the mare that had toppled and trampled it earlier.

It wanted to rip that one apart especially. Yet, as it stepped towards the mare, it felt something tickle in the back of its mind. Something like distant whispering wind or far off chattering of a tree full of squirrels began to fill its ears, yet there was no breeze or furred tree dwelling morsels to be found. It grew louder and louder, mingling with its own desires as its senses and instincts betrayed it. The bear felt as if its focus was being pulled every which way, from the environment to its injuries, to sleeping and self preservation. They all were arguing in its brain, and the bear shook its plated head in confusion, drawing a paw up as if to try and swat away the many different thoughts as they clamored to be given attention over the other.

Outside of its turmoil, however, there was one sound that could be heard above all. A snap like lightning cut through the mental din briefly, and its already aching body was suddenly aflame with fresh agony. Rifled lead drilled into the meat of its chest in a spray of red and a cloud of sandy brown fur. Dense pectoral muscles shredded like paper, and the two slugs nestled themselves into the dense bone of its sternum. Even with the firepower that the undead may possess, there was far more bear than there was momentum behind those slugs. But, where they failed to penetrate to anything vital, the bear was still left with a hole the size of a man’s fist in its expansive chest.

But that was enough to draw it somewhat from its stupor- aside from an iron-shod hoof colliding with its already aggravated ribs.

The massive armored bear howled and shoved itself onto its hind legs, blood dripping from its wounds to paint the clearing crimson. Its head throbbed with its mental arguing and pulling, and sluggishly its took a step towards them as it tried in vain to clear the curse that clung like a heavy fog to its mind. It charged towards both horse and rider, swinging its thick, spiked arms like cudgels. This way and that, it swiped and clawed at its attackers, ripping them to pieces and battering them to the ground.

Indeed, Samhain’s ribs were shattered the moment the bear’s claws had met her side. The sight, the sound of bone crunching and shattering, sent a sickening feeling down his spine that settled where his gut once was. But, he had to give the mare credit, she was a stubborn creature. Perhaps she was even a little too stubborn for her own good.

Mind yourssself, mon dessstrier, we want to be able to leave after we have killed thisss beassst too. He warned, keeping an eye on the giant armored bear. Trussst me, Sssamhain. It isss bessst that you come back over here, I do not want to lossse you for looking after my well being!

That seemed to quell her protesting for the moment, but he understood her point. She wanted to make sure he got out of the forest intact, but he did not want his horse, one of the only friends he had out here, ripped apart by some ornery bear over a few hives of bees.

If anything he wanted both the hives and their well being intact by the time this was over.

Yet, his plans to distract the bear were somewhat hampered by the gunshot that rang through the trees, and buried itself within the massive Arzuros’ chest.

He was afraid this would happen, but the risk was well worth the reward. The moment the unnatural whispering began to manifest within the bear’s mind, its focus grew disoriented and torn. It had been the perfect opportunity, and one that the undead superfiend was not going to be able to get again anytime soon. To top it off, a fresh, fist-sized hole had been punched through the bear’s fur, and now was steadily dribbling a river of red onto the ground.

Yet, it still was not enough to silence the beast forever.

He had watched as his horse had slammed a hoof into its ribs before doubling back to him, but the bear was hot on her tail.

”Sssss! Sssamhain, watch your back!” Mortis leaped to the side as the bear charged them both, its armored arms swinging like massive, tree-trunk sized maces.

Yet, in its effort to try and smash the both of them, it left its back open to attack. No armor other than dense fur and hide covered its flanks, and an idea came to the superfiend’s mind. Quickly he holstered the shotgun against his hip, and ran in behind the bear, his claws curled and eager to sink themselves into the back of its leg.

Cover me! He briefly urged his horse across their mental link, before he rushed in and latched his rotten talons firmly onto the furry back of the bear’s thigh.

The moment his rancid skin came in contact with the bear’s hide, it began to wither to a rancid black. Hair curled and darkened, before falling away in thick foul smelling clumps. Beneath it, the bear’s skin decayed, mottling itself in nasty browns and blacks as Mortis’ putrefying touch took hold and devoured its way down into the muscle tissue. Tendons frayed and snapped like worn ropes, and muscle and fatty tissue liquefied into a thick black soup that dribbled down the undead’s talons to pool at his feet in a nasty putrid slime.

Of course, they still had to return home after they had managed to kill this interloper. She knew this well enough, as her single ear flicked back to pin against her neck. but her master had his points, it would not do the both of them any good if she were to need a new host by the end of this confrontation. Though she may like a good fight as much as her master, her idea of a fine afternoon was not searching for a proper horse carcass and a tub large enough to hold it while it was prepared with dead fluids for her use.

Yes, Master. But understand that I cannot let myself lose you either.

Corny as it sounded, the mare was not about to allow the bear destroy Mortis as it may destroy her. They were a team in her eyes, or more, eye sockets. She depended on him, and in a way he depended on her.

Her galloping gait returned her to her master’s side with a thunderous drumming of hooves against the fresh green grass, which now was pock marked with ruts and clumps of uprooted shoots from their battle with the towering armored bear. But as she was retreating, she could hear the massive fur and chitin covered animal lumbering behind her, howling and roaring all the while.

At her master’s warning she jumped aside, just in time to see the confused beast rampage past her; arms swinging like spiked pendulums. She gave a sharp whinny, hopping aside before doubling back to fall in next to Mortis. She had to get him on her back, she had to get him off the ground and up where he would be safer, swifter with the aid of her powerful hooves. But just as she moved to grab him up by the back of his overcoat and swing him back into her saddle, he was already off again in the direction of the rampaging bear.

    Master, what are you doing?!

The beast punched a hole in her ribs with a single swipe! What did he think he was doing getting close? The beast could shatter him into bony splinters with a single brisk turn! She did not need his command to rush in after him, her ear and a stub pinned as she raced around to the bear’s front while Mortis sank his claws into one of its thickly furred legs.

She reared with a hoarse bellow, and curled lips back to the point where the rancid, mummified flesh turned inside out to show the putrid green of her gums. Her hooves lashed out like spiked cudgels at the bear’s already torn chest, and sank her teeth into the fresh gunshot wound that gaped deeply upon its pectorals.
