The sound of hooves against frozen earth echoed through the trees like thunder, unrelenting, rapid. Samhain’s rictus grin resembled a snarl more than a smile as she bore down on The Thing’s trail, her sightless eye sockets fixed on its every move. Each of its attempts to flee were followed with surprising agility that belied her undead state. She followed every twist, every abrupt turn; her spiked shoes tore into the ground and threw chunks of icy earth and packed snow.

Did The Thing know that its attempts to lose her were futile, even foolish? She thought it knew, it knew painfully well as its movements became more erratic and frantic. Yet, her large, yellow stained teeth remained barely inches away from the back of its neck. She lunged, snapping at the icy flesh with a loud clap of teeth against teeth. She lifted her hooves high as she drew closer and slammed them against the ground, barely a hair short of crushing the flimsy, emaciated sliver of a creature. Though she hated The Thing so, she loved the chase. She loved to watch it run and flee before her, driven to desperation and fear tingling sharp and pointy in its head. Her tail whipped like a flag as she ran The Thing around the trees, through the snowy underbrush, until it finally slipped up.

Its feet lost their grip upon the slick snow, and The Thing tumbled sideways. With a loud snort, she followed, and slammed her hooves down into the side of its chest. Icy flesh cracked and shattered, forcing a pained shriek from The Thing as it was bleeding in the snow, once again punctured by her spiked shoes.

In the back of her mind, she could sense that Master had noticed, and for a moment her ears pricked forward. Her mummified, leathery lips pulled into her usual offsetting grin, perhaps even a little wider. Samhain was beaming at her accomplishment. But, she was not beaming in the sense that she had caught something, she did that regularly at home. She, Samhain, had caught something for her Master. A murderhorse the steed may be, but she was an eager to please soul at heart.

Even so, Mortis’ praises hardly meant that her task was done.

The Thing writhed in the snow, and fixed a wide-eyed, terrible look in her direction. Before she thought to strike a hoof into its face, the creature opened its ragged mouth wide and screamed at her. However, it was not a scream she was used to from the odd intruder, like The Salesmen; it could be felt, it shoved her like a physical force.

With a grunt Samhain reeled back, and her decaying body slammed sideways against a tree. She stumbled away from it and snorted. Though The Thing’s shout was strong, Samhain refused to be disabled by it, albeit barely.

She could hear her master’s voice in her head. Keep going, this one was an easy kill. Oh, she was well aware. She remembered how satisfyingly it crunched under her hooves, and how easy it had been to mangle and break. Samhain sensed her master approaching, and with a loud bang, she witnessed as two new bloody wounds opened up in The Thing’s chest. Samhain neighed and lunged forward, slamming her hooves down onto it. Her teeth flashed and she thrust her head forward, biting and ripping at The Thing as she mauled it to pieces.

Unfortunately, while a Wendigo’s howl could easily knock down a man fleeing for their life, a horse apparently was a little too dense for it to work effectively. It watched as the animal was thrown back against a tree, but otherwise seemed unharmed. It was as if it had only given the behemoth of an undead beast a rough shove!

Oh, but it’s grin... The horse’s leathery, dead lips pulled themselves into what it could only discern to be a smug, appeased smile. The wendigo was not sure which was more unsettling, the fact that the animal was pleased about something, or that a horse was smiling at it to begin with.

It was something that the wendigo had little time to think upon. In the corner of its remaining eye, the wendigo caught a glimpse of the barrel of Mortis’ gun peeking between the trees. It’s face twisted into a snarl as it rolled to move out of the way. Two more loud snaps of gunfire echoed through the depths of the forest. And in the same moment, pain lanced through its chest once again, its felt like its skin had been ripped open with a white hot iron pike. It clutched its ribs, blood streaming steadily out of the fresh wounds. The slugs had managed to only graze it, but they managed to cut it deeply regardless.

To make matters worse, the horse was moving again.

The wendigo snarled and twisted itself away from the animal’s hooves, only to expose its back for the beast to sink its teeth into. There was another piercing shrill, the wendigo’s mouth contorted into a painful, angry expression. Despite the darkness surrounding them all, one would swear its remaining eye was aglow with pure hatred.

”Enough!” It screeched, twisting itself around in a serpentine fashion to swipe the horse’s snapping jaws away. ”My week’s worth of mending will not be in vain!”

It rolled and kicked itself out from under Samhain’s feet, leaving a trail of black droplets that trickled down its limbs and dripped from its ribs. For a scant moment it crouched in the snow, and turned its gaze towards the one who had wronged it so. A single eye fixed itself upon Mortis, and in an instant the wendigo leaped from where it was crouched.

Its one eye glared madly at the undead superfiend, and it screamed with vengeance dripping upon every word; ”GIVE ME BACK MY EYE!”

Like a bolt of lightning, the wendigo fell upon Mortis. Its limbs were a blur of fury as they ripped and tore at his putrid body. They struck at his limbs, they clawed his face, and they tore at his throat.

    ”Damn! Mortis vehemently hissed.

His shots had only grazed the wendigo, instead of landing both slugs right into its chest. But even so, the gashes they left behind were hellish and ragged. Black blood flowed freely, and as Samhain descended upon the hapless creature, more thick rivulets of the dark fluid would join it.

He kept an eye upon it as it thrashed and did its best to escape from the undead mare’s wrath. Hooves pounded the snow and splattered the steadily growing pool of dark blood beneath it in a thick spatter upon her hooves and its form. Her teeth snapped and pulled at its exposed back, pulling it open and ripping new wounds across its ribs with soft wet rips and pops of rancid flesh. At once Mortis thought to reload his gun, but there was no time.

The wendigo’s limbs whipped themselves about, it rolled, and suddenly it was on its feet again with a screech and an outraged yell. Its single sickly eye glared at him, and it pounced with a howl. It’s eye, it screamed, it wanted its eye.

In a flash of icy white, the wendigo pounced and knocked them both to the ground. His gun was knocked aside, clattering off of a fallen log and disappearing under a small snow drift.

A loud hiss escaped the undead’s ribs as he was knocked down, and was subject to the entity’s fury.  The first rake of the wendigo’s black claws dug itself into the side of his skull, but the second slash was avoided with a sharp twist away from the creature’s rabid clawing. But, in the wendigo’s eagerness to  seek revenge, it had failed to notice a  crucial detail.

It was right in grabbing range.

”I ssshall take your other eye, and let you roam thisss foressst blind!” Mortis spat.

Yellowed talons lashed out and aimed to sink themselves into the tattered hide of the wendigo’s neck and chest, slicing through its papery skin and ripe meat. His fingers curled and hooked into the entity’s ribs, an attempt to keep it anchored while his rotting touch devoured the wendigo’s battered form.

Black blood smeared her teeth and speckled her hooves in its putrid viscera. With every bite and tear, Samhain delighted in the dismembering of The Thing, and its squealing screams. It screeched and twisted away from her again, and she reared her head back as it swiped at her. She may not have been able to understand much of The Thing’s squawking and screaming, but she did understand the look in its eye, and the way it glared at her Master.

An ethereal sounding squeal trumpeted from the undead mare in warning to her Master, before she sought to take action.

Her ears pinned against her neck and she dove once more for its pathetic, now bloodied body. But the only thing she managed to attain was a mouthful of snow. It had leaped at her master, and now they were both on the ground. Master’s gun was gone, buried beneath the snow. The Thing was on top of him, and she heard the ear splitting scrape of nails against bone. They fought too quickly her to intervene. Among the twisting and thrashing, Master lashed his hands out and grabbed The Thing. Immediately its flesh started to wither and blacken, sloughing off its ribs in putrid sheets.

She looked between the two brawling undeads and the rough pile of snow that the shotgun had fallen into. One of her ears flicked as she briefly considered the situation, before deciding that -naturally, she had no idea how to use the gun.

Heavy hooves drummed against the snow as her decision was made, and the mare quickly made her way over to the two squabbling creatures. Her lips curled into a ferocious looking sneer, and she struck her head down to sink her teeth into one of its twiggy legs with a curt snap. She pulled and thrashed her head, before trying to throw The Thing into the woods.

”I ssshall take your other eye, and let you roam thisss foressst blind!”

The wendigo immeidately screeched. He would not dare take its other eye! It would not let him!

”You will sooner roam this forest headless, than steal my- aaugh!” The pale, lanky creature was cut off as it felt a burning sensation in its chest.

Icy white skin darkened to a putrid black, and peeled away from its bones like wet paper. It watched as chunks of its own body fell away and plopped into the snow in putrid, rotting globs. Even as they were sitting in the snow, the flesh was still eating away at itself until it had rapidly decomposed into dust. Within less than a handful of seconds, its chest had been completely depleted of flesh, and bare, ivory ribs were open to the world, along with pulsating innards that throbbed to the beat of its racing heart.

A heart, that was comprised of solid ice.

”Get your hands off me!” It screamed,  and snapped its claws around the hand that clung firmly to its ribcage. ”You will pay dearly for this!”

The drumming beat of hooves shook the ground, and the Wendigo’s expression twisted into a snarl. Sickly red eyes, now glazed over with agony and horror, darted to look behind it, just in time to see the horse attempt to snap at its legs. No, its thoughts screamed; not again, not with that damn beast! Its attention was diverted from Mortis in a frantic attempt to kick the horse’s face away, its hiss warbled and gurgling with blood that was welling in its throat.

But, despite the Wendigo’s thrashing, it seemed as if it only made things easier for the animla to grab it by one of its spindly legs. Teeth the size of a person’s hand slammed down onto its calf with a sickening crunch, and pulled.

It did not get a chance to say anything, as the horse had effectively wrenched it up and flung it into the trees. Its outraged cry echoed through the treetops while it flew through the air, and bounced off the trunk of a sturdy, thick pine tree with a solid thud. The tree shook with the impact, and dropped its burden of snow from its branches, to bury the ravaged wendigo under its icy weight.

Yet, it still was not through.

Despite how it had been rotted and beaten, the Wendigo’s heart still beat, albeit barely. The creature remained conscious in the wake of its near second defeat, and realized it had been gifted with an opportunity.

There was distance between it and its attackers. It also was hidden beneath a pile of snow. But, the choices that it was given twisted the wendigo’s guts with how they would certainly wound its pride should it decide to attempt either of them. Or perhaps that was the agony of its wounds that it was feeling. The wendigo decided that it was feeling both, despite possibly evidence to the contrary. If it decided to carry on with this losing fight, certainly it would find itself defeated, and likely this Mortis would make good on his promise of taking away its remaining eye.

But, if it decided to retreat...

The wendigo’s expression soured at the notion of having to run from this damnable duo. It loathed the thought of having to surrender to some sheep-headed corpse and their psychotic horse. It had tracked them for a reason, righteous fury burned in its breast and its mind was a turbulent sea of vengeful thoughts. Yet, despite its pride, the creature knew that it was outmatched.

It needed to rest, to feed.

Taking advantage of the situation, the wendigo slowly, painfully rose from where it had been laying broken against the tree. Snow fell from its body, stained black with its blood, which poured steadily from its wounds in a trail that followed its attempt to leave both undead person and horse.

Re: The Hunter And The Hunted

Post by Mortis on Fri Feb 03, 2017 5:01 pm

The undead superfiend witnessed as the Wendigo had been caught off mid-remark, his gaze following its eye as it looked down at the carnage done to its chest. Flesh fell away in necrotic sheets, putrid and black. Within seconds the bone of its ribs were exposed, along with its innards. The ghoul’s empty eye sockets remained fixed upon the grisly scene for a brief moment. He had seen plenty of ripped bodies, rotten corpses, and rotting flesh millions of times over. But, it was the first time Mortis had ever seen a creature with a heart made of solid ice.

His snout flicked back up to the Wendigo’s pained expression, its mouth now snapping with screeches and screaming.

”I will pay for nothing! The superfiend retorted, ”You who ssshall pay for your own insssolence, with your own blood!”

As if on cue, both superfiend and wendigo took note of a sudden beating of hooves against the frozen earth. The latter glanced back just in time to see Samhain, and madly flail about in what Mortis could only call a desperate attempt to kick the mare’s face away. Mortis could already discern the mare’s intent, and with a sharp pop of his decrepit talons, he released the Wendigo’s rib cage just as his undead steed managed to clamp down upon its leg.

With an indignant cry, the tattered remains of what was once a wendigo had been flung aside in a trail of viscera and black blood. Its screams faded into the woods, and were swiftly silenced by a loud thud further back into the forest as its body collided with a tree.

”Ssss...” He supposed there were worse ways that the fight could have gone.

But, with the wendigo being so weak as it was already, it would take a miracle for it to begin to gain the upper hand over him or Samhain.

”My thanksss.” Mortis rasped to the mare, ”Now, where isss my gun?”

Ancient joints popped and creaked with the undead’s ascension out of the deep snow. The long, flowing layers of  dark overcoats that he wore may have seemed somewhat macabre, and failed to fit in with the form-fitting fashions of the city, but they served their purpose well. Hardly a flake of snow or moisture had managed to penetrate the dense fabric and encumber his cadaverous limbs. It merely accumulated on the oily surface of his recently acquired duster, and fell away with a  brisk shake.

Now if only his toes were granted the same sanctuary.
He turned as he stood from the Mortis-shaped pit he had pressed onto the frozen ground, bending over to retrieve his hat that had been knocked off during the scuffle.

Though he was not aware of it, Samhain would see when he turned to face her, that the wendigo had carved a fresh trio of scars into the side of his snout. They trailed up the side of his jaw, breaking where his teeth began, and carried up the side of his face to end just above his eye socket. Undoubtedly they had to have been from the first swipe that the creature had take at him.

Empty eye sockets scanned the ground, before he ultimately followed the hint his horse gave him, namely nudging the pile of snow that it had fallen into before picking the gun up by the middle of its barrels in her mouth and offering it to him.

”Oh, there it isss.” He hissed, and gave the animal a fond pet between her eyes as he retrieved his shotgun. ”You are sssuch a good girl, Sssamhain.”

There was no denying it, the two of them made a great team. Whether it was a team up against chores, hunting game, or strange supernatural entities with vendettas about getting their eyes back. Speaking of which, there was still a wendigo lurking about...

Admittedly, it was tempting to simply leave the creature to lick its wounds. But, there was still the undeniable fact that the wendigo had still fought even though its armor had been shattered. It had forgone its desire to preserve its being in the name of vengeance. This was not the same wendigo, at least characteristically, that he had fought last week. If it was allowed to recover, likely it would only come back stronger next time. The undead superfiend could already imagine another intrusion by the pale, corpse-like thing. Perhaps this time it would decide to try and target his animals; to harm Woolie, or Ombre. Maybe it would taint their food, or simply try to kill them when an opportunity managed to arise. The very thought made the curdled green sludge in Mortis’ veins boil.

That was it, he could not let the wendigo leave this forest intact.

”Come along, Sssamhain. There isss ssstill a sscrap of un-life left of that wendigo to extinguisssh.” Mortis hissed, and strode over to her side.

He lifted himself into her saddle, and with a mental command, he directed her towards where the wendigo had landed. Though he had a feeling his input would only be minimal, given her usual murderous drives. So, while Samhain pursued, Mortis folded open the barrel of his shotgun, emptying the spent, bright red cases into the snow and pressing in new ones. All the while his skull was on a swivel, his psychic senses reaching out and probing for the entity’s whereabouts.

Oh, what a scream! Samhain’s ears pricked forward at the sound, seeming to take immense interest in the creature as it flew off into the woods, its own shrill screaming whistling in its wake. Yet, as it faded into the distance, Samhain turned slightly, the stub of her missing ear flicked to the side as if she was tracking it.

Wait for it, wait for it...

And, thud! There was the satisfying sound of The Thing hitting a tree, just what she was waiting for. With a content huff she turned her head away from where it had been tossed, and directed her attention to her Master, who was still laying in the snow. Thanks? There was no thanks that needed to be given! Just as she thoroughly enjoyed beating the life out of everything and anything that bothered him or their home, she too enjoyed helping her master where and how she could.

Especially if helping Master meant a chance to beat the crap out of something.

The undead mare tossed her head, her single ear pricked towards the sheep-skull headed undead.

    Of course, Master.

Now, as for the gun, the undead mare’s ear and stub of an ear flicked to either side as she scanned the ground. Having her eye sockets on the sides of her head, she hardly had to turn around to see where it had landed. While Master was picking himself up from his personal pit in the snow, the undead mare managed to catch a glimpse of something shiny peeking out from under the glistening white layer. She turned her long face towards it, and stepped over to the strange thing that glistened in the dark.

    I think I found it.

She pressed her leathery snow into the small drift, wiggling her green, rancid lips to clear the cold powder aside. Soon enough the twin barrels of her master’s shotgun were revealed to her, and she eagerly plucked the weapon out of the snow. The remaining clumps of the icy stuff was cleared with a brisk shake of her head, before she offered the weapon back to her master’s awaiting hands. Oh, and he even called her a good girl! That was second time this morning she was called a good girl!

Today was going to be a great day, she could tell. But it already was getting better as her master deduced that they should keep going after The Thing. Yes, yes, they should keep tracking it! They should find it and kill The Thing before it could run away! Her agreement to the idea was indisputable, eager and enthusiastic to the point where she was tempted to simply pluck her master up and place him on her saddle herself. But, she restrained herself, resigning to paw at the ground impatiently while Master hopped onto her back.

But the moment he gave her the direction to track down The Thing, she immediately snorted and threw herself into a gallop. She remembered where it went, she knew that it could not be far. Her sightless gaze traced the ground and scanned the branches for its pathetic form, knowing fully well that in its state it probably was just as sluggish as it was weak.

While Mortis’ efforts were met with little to no evidence of the wendigo’s presence Samhain would find a trail of black droplets leading away from a pile of snow beneath a fairly thick pine tree. The pile itself looked like something had dug it was out of it, and upon following the spotty line of black through the snow, it lead to none other than the wendigo.

Hoof beats thundered not too far away from the slinking creature, hunched over as it hobbled through the woods. One arm was wrapped protectively around its chest, a furtive attempt to keep its insides from spilling out onto the ground. The other grasped to lean on any tree it came across to lessen the burden on its quivering, aching limbs. They grew closer, and the wendigo’s single eye widened.

”No...” It whispered, and stumbled forward. ”No, no no no...”

Its arm shakily whipped out and grasped at a low hanging branch of a nearby tree, using it as leverage to pull itself forward as it tried and failed to will its limbs to move faster. The wendigo glanced back, and coughed another mouthful of the pitch black slime. Even through the shadows of the early morning hours, it could see that damn grinning beast gaining on it, along with its rider, gun in hand.

Maybe it could win itself some more time. Maybe it still had a chance. Such were the frantic thoughts that spun around in its battered head.

With a labored cough and a gasp,  the wendigo took one more breath, and with the last of its strength; attempted to unleash a hellish yell in the duo’s direction. Or more specifically, the horse.
