    Breath of the Wind

Post by Vaati on Thu Jun 23, 2016 3:03 pm

    Date: June 14, 2016

The Palace of Winds was a lovely place... and although it had been something that he had managed to work with across the ages here instead of truly back in his own world, Vaati still appreciated it it immensely. He knew how vastly superior his own palace was to the ruins of the same name back in his world, and although he still remembered that dungeon quite well, the Wind Mage was well aware of the differences and improvements in his own stronghold. From the larger chambers to the more deadly traps, to the greater monsters to the different quarters, it was his domain and his domain alone.

That still counted even as he shared it with his minions, the strangely loyal yaojing as well as all the rest.

Standing outside on the second balcony of the palace, Vaati let the wind wisp past his form, gently blowing past some of his hair and cape. Yes... it might have been nearly the summer, but it was still a rather nice day. It was perfect for a cup of tea... and it would be even more perfect if Xiao happened to remember the request for said tea as well as the location it was to be enjoyed today. She was rather good with afternoon tea when she was at the palace on those days, but as it was, Vaati had not yet seen her form grace the balcony. So long as she was here shortly, he would not investigate.

Tea! Tea had been summoned! By her precious Lord Vaati. Except, well, Xiao had forgot to ask what tea. The yaojing stared at their massive tea cupboard which was essentially shelves upon shelves of boxes, bottles and jars of all sorts of tea Xiao had accumulated over time. Did he want breakfast tea, chinese tea, green tea, white tea, red tea, black tea, lavender tea, mint tea, tea infusion and then which one of those kinds? And once she figured which of those kinds he might want, there was a matter of which brand of that type of tea. She did have something along the lines of six different Earl Grey tea, if not more. Perhaps she should lay off buying tea for a while.

When she finally figured out to go with the safest option - apparently English Breakfast was something that solves all tea related problems - she immediately started piling everything onto a wooden serving cart that she dug out of somewhere in the palace a few weeks ago (when she got lost in the hallways shortly after accidentally triggering and falling into ‘Trap #27’ as Xiao calls it). On goes the teapot of tea, a tiered stand of scones, little cakes, tarts, biscuits, a jug of milk, bowl of sugar and napkins (especially chosen to match her master’s beautiful hair)

And off Xiao went, only to return not three seconds afterwards to boil another kettle of water, cast a spell on said kettle to keep the water hot inside, throw another empty teapot to the bottom shelf of the serving cart alongside half dozen boxes of other teas. You know… just in case Lord Vaati didn’t want English Breakfast, then Xiao was prepared to make him a different pot right away.

...Unless he wanted something really, really obscure, in which case, the squirrel might be in a spot of trouble.

    ANYWAYS, onwards! With tea!

To the wrong place! Did Lord Vaati say the second balcony or the twenty second balcony? Did they even have a twenty second balcony? Xiao wasn’t very sure, her number systems get a bit muddled up sometimes because it was almost like somebody designed this place to resemble some dungeon or maze that’s hard to navigate. Thankfully, a dark darknut pointed her the right way, and away from the trap #15 shortcut she was about to take. She might survive it, but certainly not the tea and yummies.

Xiao finally got to her master’s position, only 15 minutes later than ideal.

If there was one thing that the Palace of Winds could rival in next to the sheer amount of books contained within its halls, it would be tea. Vaati had already acquired an impressive collection all on his own, and Xiao Xiao had only added to that. Sometimes he wondered just how they had managed to gather so much tea, but as time was relative, so too was the collection of the most delectable drink in the history of beverages. That said, they were well stocked for the indefinite future, and it was very likely that he would have to put his sandaled foot down about any new acquisitions.

Whether Xiao realized it or not, English breakfast was always a fine option. Vaati had not had it back in his own world of Hyrule, but he had grown fond of something similar there, and he did enjoy this sort that the English – whoever they were – had concocted. For this day though, he was looking forward to whatever she happened to wish to surprise him with.

Whilst the Palace of Winds did not have a 22nd balcony, it did have a perfectly dungeon like setup and one particularly helpful Dark Darknut. The Wind Mage might not have been aware of the full path that the yaojing had taken to arrive at his location, but he knew it might take her a bit to get there. Still, the serving tray was a very welcome sight, and Vaati could not help but smirk ever so slightly once Xiao appeared behind him. Turning to her, he simply nodded, stating, “Ah, Xiao. Thank you for coming… and you have outdone yourself with today’s assortment. Well done.”

Indeed… with the array of scones, cakes, tarts, and biscuits, this might very well be lunch, or at least a hearty appetizer. Still, Vaati was even more pleased to see all of this than he had anticipated, and he was set to enjoy each bit of it along with his loyal minion.

Her master complimented heeeeeeer! Squeeeeeee! Xiao wanted to put her hand to her heart, throw her head back and sigh/swoon dramatically. Or maybe bounce up and down like a child. Or maybe tackle hug the wind mage. Or maybe prance around and wave her arms in glee. Actually, she kind of wanted to do all of the above.

Fortunately for Lord Vaati, she didn’t do any of the above, instead she merely beamed and her tail swished back and forth happily almost like a puppy.

“I got breakfast tea. Is that oh and kay? I know it’s not breakfast right now but it seems to be considered standard tea. If you rather have something else, I have some spare teapots on the bottom shelf, all filled with hot water, kept warm with magic and ready for whatever teabag/leaves you would like - I brought several types with me,” she babbled, turning the cart around and lifting the dainty white tea cloth to reveal the shelf under for her master to see what other choices he had.

“And, and, and, there are cherry scones, plain scones and cheese scones. And some cakes and biscuits. I’m not sure what you felt like having with your tea so I just brought everything. It’s fine if you don’t want any though, Xiao Xiao would happily eat whatever Lord Vaati doesn’t want to eat.” Though she was skeptical as to whether she can eat all the pastries she had readied and still have room for meal later on in the day. Maybe she had made a bit too much after all…. Not that she actually made any of the food items on the cart. Oh no, there this really nice bakery in down which makes really nice yummy things. Wheatta and Pitton’s or something?

Vaati would have been unsurprised had Xiao Xiao reacted super openly to his simple praise, but when she instead opted to merely smile cheerily and swoosh her tail, he found himself inwardly grateful. He was very used to the yaojing’s antics by now, but his most loyal minion could exercise some control when she so wished. That right there was another reason he held her in higher regard than he might admit to… her loyalty was one thing, and her ability to do even more when she focused was another.

“Breakfast tea is perfectly fine, Xiao. Thank you,” stated Vaati. He was hardly expecting her to have spare teapots and hot water all set as well, but he did inwardly appreciate the way that she had been able to think ahead. Fetching tea was an easy task, and this preparedness was something he would certainly keep in mind for both other simple as well as complex requests in the future. Some of those instances might involve him detailing such to make sure nothing was amiss, but at the very least, it was proof of her capabilities when she put her mind to things.

Smirking softly in approval as she revealed the additional items on the lower shelf of the cart, he soon found his appetite whet even more with the mention of each sort of treat she had brought along. “That all sounds fantastic… scones would be just the thing right now. Come. Let us enjoy our tea.”

With a simple flick of the wrist, two cups were set on their saucers, and he gestured for Xiao to step in with the teapot.

Breakfast tea was fine. Breakfast tea was dandy. Breakfast tea would do. Breakfast tea is yummy. Xiao Xiao hummed as she stepped forward to very carefully filled up the two teacups her master had just set up. Maybe once they finish this pot of tea, they could go onto the other pots she had prepared. After all, one pot of tea is never enough, especially when you had as many dainty nibbles as they had today.

Yes, a nice long afternoon of sipping tea on the balcony with her master. What a glorious idea!

No wait, just because she thought it was glorious does not mean Lord Vaati thought the same, nor does she think he’d actually want to just sit and drink tea all day. Oh no, the wind mage had things to do. Very important wind magey thingies….

What exactly do wind mages actually do? Xiao scrunched her brows a little as she started pouring milk and sugar into her own cup and imagining what on earth do Vaati even do on a daily basis? Honestly, she had been there so long and she doesn’t really have much of an idea. He read a lot, that much she knew. And practiced windy magic quite often, but apart from that…. What does Lord Vaati do?

...Apart from the standard living being things like eating, sleeping, bathing and pooping…. He does poop, right?

No! Bad, Xiao! How unladylike! Bad! BAD! That is terribly awfully horribly inelegant of you to think of your male master using the bathroom. No! Bad! Does he do wordsearches and crosswords in there? What about gossip magazines? Wind Mage Weekly? Aaaaah! No! Shoo! The yaojing shook her head furiously to knock the thoughts out of her head and hopefully scatter it far, far away into the air.

Vaati smiled ever so slightly as Xiao Xiao moved to pour the freshly brewed tea into the cups he had magically prepared. Yes… this first pot would be just perfect. And since one good cup of tea always deserved another, he had a strong feeling that they would go through the other teapots that his most loyal of minions had thought to bring. She could be scatterbrained, she could be ditzy, but in some matters, that very thought process served her well. Tea was one such case, and each pot was a testament to that regardless of the array of snacks that the yaojing had provided.

Unbeknownst to Xiao, the Wind Mage did think that a nice afternoon of tea and treats was a glorious idea. He did have plenty of things to do, but he was as much the master of his own time as he was the master of this palace. And right now, he wanted very specifically to enjoy a good afternoon with delicious tea.

Not too long after she had readied the tea in the teacups though, Xiao suddenly began shaking her head furiously. This was not out of place, but all the same, Vaati quirked an eyebrow almost imperceptibly. Unsure if he should address this or not, he decided to forge ahead, asking, “Xiao? Is everything all right?”

"Nothing is wrong!" the squirrel immediately quipped. "Nopesy, nothing is wrong at all."

I mean, it's not like she totally was wondering how and when her master goes about his business in the bathroom. Not that she even know what his bathroom looked like. Xiao had cleaned every inch of the Palace and aside from selected parts of his private chambers, she had yet to actually see most of Vaati's living quarters. Which is a pity because she is rather dying to investigate his bathroom and see what hair products he used to keep it so gloriously pretty.

She even started having thoughts that there must be a personal minion in there somewhere to help him with his hair. Maybe an eyebat? No, they don't have hands so managing hair would be impossible. A Floormaster, maybe? Those guys are creepy. She had shrieked the first time she met one and it wasn't until one of them helped her move some pots around during cleaning that she stopped being scared of them. And they don't talk either.... actually, that's not hard to do, since a lot of Vaati's minions in the palace don't talk.

"Why don't the others in the Palace talk?" she asked out of the blue. "Can I teach them to speak our common language?" Because she wouldn't mind have a daily gossip party with chuchus over tea.... not the floaty skulls though. They laugh at her and are cheeky menaces as far as she was concerned.

Vaati’s expression did not shift at all at Xiao Xiao’s rapid response to his question, but even as he glanced to her unblinkingly, he simply deduced that she had managed to get herself thoroughly caught up in another one of her incredibly random trains of thought. This was a very common occurrence, and one that the Wind Mage was far too familiar with. He fully understood getting lost inside of ones thoughts as it was something that happened to him many times a day, but he scarcely ever acted out the same way the yaojing did… much less did his thoughts tend to resemble the most impressive collection of babbling tangents that ever existed.

He enjoyed his tea for several more seconds before his most loyal minion suddenly found where her thoughts had taken her, and it was all the Wind Mage could do to not lower his teacup. All right… this certainly was not the worst thing that she could have asked… but surely much of it made sense…. then again, this was Xiao Xiao. Sense was relative.

“Xiao… not all of them have vocal cords, nor are all of them capable of speech,” explained Vaati. “Many of them are monsters that can understand things, but they lack the ability of cognitive thought, and even those that possess some degree of it are not able to vocalize. It is much the same as other animals you are familiar with, such as cats and dogs. … Surely though you’ve seen them able to understand and respond even if they cannot use the same words you do.”

“But then can’t you just give them voice cordy things?” she immediately asked with a frown. It seems like her image of having a fancy tea party with a rainbow collection of chuchus, and ohohoho-ing with them over cake and gossip, was starting to poof into thin air. “I can understand maybe not the eyebats because there are sooooo many of them, and they don’t have a mouth either so that meant you’d not only have to do one spell for voice things, but also another spell to give them mouths. But something like the darknuts and chuchus should be oh and kay?”

She wasn’t too interested in talking to the darknuts though. They’re rather boring in her opinion. But the chuchus are colourful and rather cute in her opinion.

Vaati was beyond used to stupid questions from Xiao Xiao by now… bonus points if they were simply blurted out instead of prefaced by any semblance of thought. Giving vocal chords to all of the monsters under his service? That was completely and utterly preposterous, not to mention thoroughly unfeasible and all but impossible. He was a powerful sorcerer… not a god. Vocal cords were only part of the equation here… they would also need larynxes, and past that, again, cognitive thought behind that. The levels of the thought aspect of the equation varied wildly from monster to monster of course, but all the same… … … no, he was not surprised at all by this question.

“Xiao… it does not work that way,” stated Vaati, sipping more of his tea before fixing his minion with his red gaze. Making sure to simply things as much as he could for Xiao Xiao terms, he added, “I can make many things appear, but I can’t just give monsters something that cannot properly affix itself to the way their bodies are built. Furthermore… Darknuts and Chuchus already have mouths. They can communicate… Darkness can speak, but you have to be careful to listen to them. They do not always have much to say unless spoken to, and even then, that depends. As for Chuchus… they might not be able to speak, but I know you have heard their very rapid vocalizations.”

“The chuchus do….squeak, I guess?” said Xiao, her ears folding down as she thought more deeply on the subject. “But I squeak as a squirrel too, but I have no idea what they’re saying. Are we squeaking different languages? Chuchus have their own language?” You could practically see the question marks springing out of her hair at this point, and the yaojing eyed the doorway, probably wondering where she could capture a chuchu and how she would learn their squeaky language from them.

“Darknuts don’t speak! All they do is grunt and make noises! Why can’t they all just speak what we’re speaking now? Wouldn’t it make it so much easier? Does it cost a lot of magic? I can help donate some….I don’t know how but I could?”
