    BANG! BANG! BANG!

Bullets rang out through the tavern, six shells spent, yet only three managed to graze the rampaging monstrosity that happened upon the once sleepy establishment. Half of Miller's cylinder was spent within a scant few breaths, and yet this thing kept coming! Meyers Senior cursed under his breath as he saw his efforts merely knock a few new holes into their assailant, and little else.

However, it was clear that their methods were at least doing something... And that was keeping the towering undead from focusing completely onto one of them at once. This being clad in black, Mortis, was attempting to deal with them all in the same breath.

Although even then, their results were far from encouraging.

-CRACK![i]- went Miller's grin as the butt of a shotgun was mercilessly whipped across his face once, the impact managing to knock the man aside and down to the floor before the second swing could land. [i]"Unngh! He wheezed, a hand shakily raising to meet his throbbing jaw and the wet warmth that dribbled freely from his lips. He could feel that at least one of his teeth were now broken or laying somewhere on the wooden floor.

McGrubben's luck was quickly falling from bad to worse, as not only was the undead's decaying touch rapidly spreading through his body, but now he felt himself being lifted from the ground as if he were a weightless doll. He spun with the undead, his vision blurred with the necrosis that set into his eyes. For a moment all he felt was momentum, and then the sensation of being flung into something solid.

    That something being Meyers Senior.

Though the shady businessman felt as if he were weightless, the once powerful man's body collided with Meyers like a boulder. However, McGrubben also could be seen flying at him from a mile away, and so, Meyers turned to deflect the worst of the damage as the decrepit remains of a fellow businessman came flying at him. He did not stop to consider his friend's health as he returned fire, the man was too far gone.

By now, Junior managed to recover from being knocked silly with a shotgun stock, though his head still rang from the impact, he felt he could see well enough to help his Pa in dealing with this undead menace. His gun spat fire and lead alongside his father.

Meanwhile, Dick Brigsby, from where he sat huddled on the floor, was presented with a unique opportunity. While he did not think to bring a gun himself, McGrubben had so graciously left his weapon behind while he was being flung around like a human mace. Shaking hands quickly picked up the semi-auto, his jellied arms liquefying as he desperately shot off a few rounds into the killer cadaver's back.

    BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!

The entire tavern erupted in gunfire, bullets flying every which way in a gauntlet of heavy metal and dark powder. Yet, whether it be fear or luck that harried their aim, Mortis was only grazed by a mere handful out of the barrage. Out of his bleached, and now scarred skull, came yet another chilling cackle.

These fools thought they held a legitimate chance! They thought they could distract him, confuse him! Their bullets were mere pebbles compared to his might. See how he flung the putrefying remnants of the once mighty, cunning McGrubben around like he were an empty burlap sack. Look how easily he sent their leader in all his so-called  intellect and power to his knees! Fools, fools all of them!

The sight of blood intoxicated, their cries and gasps of pain excited; long would it be before the crimson glow that radiated like a hot coal within his sockets abated.  For it take time before these sinners ascended to a more satisfying state of being. Oh, but Mortis was patient, diligent. He would see them to their salvation... However insignificant and temporary it may be. With a hiss he pushed the thought aside, willingly losing himself in his bloodlust and the frantic thoughts of his adversaries.

There were sinners to purge, there was death to be made!

His grip upon McGrubben tensed once more as he noticed movement behind him, a spark of opportunity. So Mr. Brigsby, cowardly Dick Brisgby thought to shoot him in the back with McGrubben's gun? Adrenaline hastened the man's movements, but his fear tainted the strength of his arm. The hurricane of putrefied flesh and fury wheeled about once more, backhandedly flinging the edifice of McGrubben into Dick Brigsby's shuddering body with a vengeance.

In the same motion, Mortis smoothly holstered his favored bludgeon and firearm against his leathers, both hands now freed. Sinewy, leathery flesh crackled and popped as his talons flexed and tensed into prime snatching posture. Like lightning they lashed out as he spun to face the two Meyers, digging into them as he howled their doom.

    "ROT IN PEACE!"

The tavern was a blur of bullets, talons and bodies.  Despite the numerous rounds they fired off, this creature, whatever it may be, refused to go down. Daresay it was like they were just phasing through him like a ghost!

Brigsby, for all he was worth, managed to avoid being knocked down by McGrubben as he was whipped at him like a ragdoll. "Woah!" he yelped, ducking down just in time to feel the speed that trailed from the man in the form of a biting friction burn. Further off, he could hear a loud thud, quickly followed by the tavern lights shaking overhead that he could only assume was McGrubben splattering against the far wall like a fly on a windshield. He hardly had time to recover before he was suddenly facing the two Meyers again, hands unencumbered and snapping out for their faces.

    "ROT IN PEACE!"

"Shit!" Junior hissed as he ducked away from Mortis' reaching talons, youth granting him an upper hand that his father lacked. One moment his father was mostly intact save for a gash upon his face from where the furious corpse had swiped him with the butt of his shotgun. In the next moment, however... Junior's eyes grew wide, horror etching itself into his face as he saw his father begin to decay right in front of him. Months, years of putrefying in a grave happened in mere seconds. His earlier vigor seemed to melt with it, as he fought to hold onto his gun and pry away the monster's hand.

"N-no! --NO!" He screamed, raising his gun and firing off as many rounds as he could into the best, tears welling in his eyes. The man who raised him, mentored him, cared for him, was turning to dust right before his eyes! He had to do something!

On the floor, Miller wiped the blood from his lip with a groan. His best suit was ruined, a migraine was quickly welling in his head, from what he could only discern was the blood loss and a developing concussion... And his men, his so-called partners in crime and brothers in arms, were proving to have all the usefulness of sacks of shit. His split lip curled into a scowl, he really did have to do everything here himself.

Three rounds remained in the cylinder of his revolver, three tries to bring this stinking stain on his reputation down before he bled out. Dammit, he was going to make them count. No longer seeing his comrades fit to be considered regarding who and who not to stick a bullet in, he brought his arm up as well as he could through the growing weightless feeling in his head, and fired.

One in the head, one in the hip, and one in the knee.

Brigsby, meanwhile, decided to once again try his luck while Mortis was occupied with the Meyers, and fired a few more shots from the borrowed gun.

Damn that Brigsby, for he was just as greasy in his dealings as he was in a fight! Suffering only a minor friction burn while McGrubben exploded like a ripe melon all over the far wall. Alas, he would deal with Brigsby soon enough, for while these sinners fought valiantly, their efforts were in vain.

Miller's shots, which sought to impede his movements, failed to bite into his host, flinging themselves harmlessly into the empty air while the ghoul whirled about upon his attackers like a typhoon of razor sharp claws and lethal instinct. Only a scant few of Junior's rounds buried themselves into his already scarce host. Surprisingly, it was Brigsby's aim that was the truest.

Brigsby, the man who's arm turned to jelly upon seeing his devastating power. Three loud pops barked from the muzzle of the borrowed gun, and they each landed solidly in his ribs. A dry rattle shuddered alongside an irritated hiss. Mortis never did like backbiters.

He would get to him quickly enough, blisteringly quick in fact.

Knowing better than to waste a perfectly good human club, the undead superfiend silently elected that Meyers Senior be McGrubben's replacement. The baleful glow within Mortis' eye sockets focused upon the distraught Junior, as he unloaded bullet after bullet in his direction. The poor boy, a father really should be united with his son. Being the considerate creature that he was, Mortis granted Meyers Junior such a mercy, by lifting his father and slamming him down upon the young man's crown. Already he could see his new weapon was lighter, and therefore faster. It was only a blink before Mortis was sweeping the man's body around by the head to bludgeon Brigsby.

H-he hit him! Not that Brigsby had not hit the ghoul before, but with how his heart was thundering in his chest and his hands quivered like a taught string when plucked... Dick found it amazing he managed to land hits as solidly as he did. Maybe he would manage to get out of this alive! Maybe he would be able to get home tonight and--!

    WHIFF!

Both Junior and Brigsby barely had enough time to get out of the way, as Meyers Senior's remains whipped toward them. Or more, what remained of Meyer's remains. In their attacker's fury, he had managed to turn the man to dust in the process of flinging him around like a skeletal morning-star. Flakes of leathery flesh flaked off of him in a dusty rain, turning to a fine powder as they contacted anything remotely more solid than air. The man, Junior's father and the group's fellow comrade in crime, disintegrated mid-swing.

Sh-- h-holy--" Brigsby could barely find the words to respond, as while he had been on the receiving end of the monster's touch before, he had never witnessed it.

Junior on the other hand, screamed. Where was the code? Where was the cloud of cyan?! One moment he was there, and the next he was gone without a chance to say goodbye. A stream of incomprehensible yelling poured from Junior's quivering mouth, likely curses from how the young man's voice was contorted into a face of pure hatred. He stood up from where he was crouched on the floor, gun pointed accusingly at the abomination that just robbed him of his father. Smoke and lead tore from the overheating barrel, his yelling barely heard over the pop of gunfire.

Good, fine. That was what Miller thought, for the more attention was on Junior, the less was on him. In the time it took to spend those three shells, two people had been reduced to putrid mush. Three were left, one being a very angry Junior, the other being an incredibly lucky Brigsby, and the last... Was himself, far worse for wear than he felt a man of his caliber should ever be.

Confident that the creature's attention would be fixed upon a very foolish Junior, Miller took his opportunity. While all of Senior had been turned to corpse dust, his gun still remained. A gun with a mostly full clip. Keeping close to the floor, he sneaked across the bloodstained wood, leaving a crimson trail of his own from his crippled arm and an empty revolver laying abandoned where he once laid.

Brigsby, shaky as ever, kept his gun fixed upon the towering killer... But failed to bring himself to pull the trigger in the wake of the most recent example of power he was already familiar with.

Indeed, he had severely miscalculated how much substance Meyers senior still had to him. One moment he was wielding a tool of justice, and the next he was lightly peppering the seedy air with dust. However, Mortis was not a slow superfiend by any means, and quickly figured what the possible outcome could be if those particles did not start turning to code very soon.

The grief within Junior's mind was every bit as loud as his screams. Gunfire barked loudly within the tavern, bullets flying from the clip as he emptied it in his rage. However, even with how close he was, only one managed to graze him. It was clear, for Junior's ills, there was but one cure! Swiftly, yellowed talons lashed out, curved and poised to sink themselves into his flesh. His father meant everything to him, and so, it was only befitting that they left this world together.

However, there was something else above the grief-fueled clamor. Something cunning, something slithering... Something creeping across the floor. Mortis could hear the scheming that meticulously wrote itself as Miller crept along the floor. So, he was hoping that the other half of the Meyers duo would be enough to distract him...

While his talons latched themselves into Junior's body, something else sank itself into Brigsby's limbs. A will that was not his own snapped the fear from his shaking arms and held his gun with an icy resolve. Just as quickly as it took hold of him, it turned the gun on Miller, and fired.

"Auugh!" Junior yelped as claws dug into his body, rot rapidly spreading through him from the brief contact. He twisted away, a lasting, deep burning sensation left behind from the contact. It felt like his shoulder was on fire, all the way down to the bone. However, the contact was brief enough that he did not feel as if he was going to collapse from weakness. Adrenaline rushed within him, his heart pounding in his ears.

He still had one good arm, and while his clip was spent, he still had a very tough, very hard club to use. Furiously he advanced and rose the handle of the gun to bash down upon the monster's skeletal face again and again.

On the floor, Miller carefully, quickly made his way over to Meyer's gun, fingers within reach of clasping around its grip. Though as he chanced a glance up at the fight to make sure the undead's attention was still upon Junior and not him, he froze.

Brigsby was pointing a gun at him. His past fear had seemed to leave him, as the gloc was held firmly, purposefully. It was as if there was no fight for their lives going on, that he completely forgotten about seeing Senior disintegrate before his very eyes. Miller's eyes widened, glancing from the muzzle of the gun to the man's contorted features. He looked as if he were fighting something, was he finally snapping under all the carnage? Dick never came off as a particularly strong man to Miller. He was not particularly sneaky or sly, and lacked the vision and opportunistic nature the rest of them had. Even so...

"Dick..." He said slowly, inching towards the gun all the while. "Y-you know who I am, yeah? We're friends."

An expression of pain remained fixed upon the older man, his eyes wide and sweat creating a sickly sheen on his face. "I-I cannot help it! It's n-not m-me!" He stuttered, watching as Miller grasped the gun fully and quickly raised it to meet him. Miller was not a man who entertained excuses, he did not bother to understand.

He was a man of solution.

"Then I guess I'll have to." He hissed, quickly raising the gun from the floor and knocking three shots into Brigsby.

Amazing, for all the fear that flooded Dick Brigsby, he managed to keep from shooting Miller. Evidently he feared the man clad in white more than he feared the undead superfiend. Not that it mattered, for he had caught Miller's attention enough for the bleeding man to decide he was worth more attention. Three shots rang out, and two new holes were punched into Brigsby's gut.

Good, he decided. Those two could sort each other out while he dealt with Junior.

    CRACK! CLACK!

Fury reigned in the boy's mind, helped him ignore his injuries and evidently cast all sense to the wind. One swing had clapped the ghoul in the jaw, dislocating it as ivory fragments spat from the impact site. The ghoul leaned aside from the next blow, Junior's arm whipping past him before grazing his eye socket. Red fixed itself upon Junior's face, the boy too swift for his own good.

    That would quickly be remedied.

The ghoul made an advance of his own, his talons snapping out to catch this rowdy sinner in the chest, rotting him as he shoved Junior back and into the wall with an unnatural might. He reached up and grasped his jaw, shoving it back into place from where it had hung slack. Then swiftly he retrieved his shotgun from where it sat crudely holstered upon his hip, folding it open with a snap. His other hand flipped open the ammunition pouch to load two fresh federal slugs into the double barrels. In one smooth motion the gun was crisply closed with a click, and Junior was staring down the mouth of two glinting barrels.

"Give your father my regardssss." He hissed, and unloaded his weapon in a flash of fire, smoke, and thunder.

    BAROOM!
