    Uncharted Territory

Post by Toven on Tue Apr 12, 2016 7:29 pm

    Time: 6pm, Dusk
    Date: 4/12/2016

Glancing over his shoulder, Toven continued to move through the bustling market. Knowing his pursuers wouldn’t hesitate to plunge a blade in his back, he clicked his tongue. Tanya, his dire wolf, emerged from a nearby alleyway, clinging to the shadows. Toven moved to her, stroking her fur lightly. With another click of his tongue, Tanya joined him walking through the bazaar, moving through the crowds of shoppers, criers calling their wares, the sound was almost deafening. He turned his head sharply, his keen drow ears picking up the cries of a woman nearby. Knowing the distraction could offer a way for him to evade those attempting to take his life, Toven headed toward the bridge connecting the bazzar to the main market. The channel through the town, icy with winter just passing, was fed by a spring beneath the city. A sharp cry behind him made his heart sink, the mix of undercommon and elvish was unmistakable! He’d been spotted! Clicking his tongue, Tanya began to sprint along side him, crossing the bridge quickly. He was more than half way across when the sharp clatter of an arrow striking stone near him caused a sharp change of direction. Suddenly a sheet of red covered his eyes as a frame was suddenly in front of him. The impact of the other body threw off his stride, causing him to step on the figures cloak. Reaching out, Toven grabbed ahold of the frame he now could distinguish as a woman, though even with his elvish eyes still could only see red. Clicking his tongue in hopes Tanya would follow, his  momentum finally caused him to tumble over the side of the bridge, clutching his new companion, hindrance close.

    “Quick! Stop that woman!”

Kahtia ran as fast as her feet could carry her, a tight hold on her satchel that carried her ferret Niko, and what he carried, the prized possession of this town a giant ruby named ‘The Blood of the Mountain’ that is now no longer the center attraction of the museum. Although, they will have more publicity now more than ever before. She supposed they could at least thank her for that. Chaos erupted behind her as a sweaty plump man whom she knew as the curator chased slowly after her, raising as much attention to her as he possibly could between his gasps for breath. It had only taken her three hours to figure out the system and sneak through unguarded to obtain her prize. This would provide her with passage on a ship, as per the captains request.

Her soft black leather shoes patted the cobblestones and her dark blue dress delicately trimmed with black lace billowed behind her as she ran towards the bridge to her temporary destination, the center of town. In its hustle and bustle full of yelling merchants calling out the items they were selling from their carts, the unavoidable fights that broke out as people disagreed on the prices, and the general fast paced nature of all the residents she would surely be lost to her pursuers for a time, before she could backtrack to make her way out of the city in disguise back the way that she came, she figured it the most unexpected route.

A sly smile played on Kahtia’s lips as she reached the bridge, knowing that in moments she would be able to disappear. This is too easy. More yelling broke out behind her and she glanced over her shoulder, her burgundy hair whipped in the wind and covered her eyes for a blinding moment. Hastily moving it from her face she heard a woman screaming from in front of her this time. Wheeling around she realized she was face to face with a horse drawn carriage and she was about to be run over. Quickly, she lunged to the side expecting to feel the hard stones of the side of the bridge, but instead found herself in someone’s hard embrace. Unable to stop her momentum her and the stranger tumbled over the side of the bridge. Grabbing Niko inside her satchel to secure him a small scream passed through her lips and was abruptly cut off by the icy water.

Toven pulled himself out of the water, arm still wrapped around the figure he ran into on the bridge. He could find little explanation as to why he was now in a large forest, though when seconds before he was in the market. Toven had woke with a sharp pain on the side of his head and Tanya pulling him and, as he saw now, the woman, to the shoreline. How long he had laid there unconscious, he was not sure, but knew that his and this woman's best chance at survival now with night drawing on them was to find a safe haven for the evening.

While the light from the fire dances across the tree limbs, giving them the façade of movement, Toven glanced at the limp body of the woman who he fell into the river with. Coming to consciousness first gave him the advantage, binding her hands loosely as a precaution. After, of course, making sure she was breathing. Toven had been slightly taken aback by a ferret that had darted out of her bags and curled up on shoulder as she lay there, but hissed only once, perhaps sensing the drow had only checked that she was still alive. For a seemingly human woman, Toven had to admire her for a moment as she lay near the fire. The light from the flames showed her equally red hair, even in the night, the unique shade it held astonished the drow. She looked as though she could hold herself well, her wet clothes clinging to her frame. The curves of her body made the drow’s eyes linger for a moment on her, then, shaking his head, he went about setting a small snare or two in hopes of catching a hare whilst he rested. Tanya would hold watch, she was seemingly always watching for her masters safety.

Darkness tainted with tangible fear swirled around her. Echoing screams thudded in her ears and she fought to tear through the thick veil of unconsciousness. It was like being submerged in a sea of nightmares, fighting the tides as they relentlessly batter you and never knowing which way was up or what exactly lurked in the darkness surrounding you. How can you come out if you can't even see which way to go? Focus. Focus. Slowly she started to come out of the abyss and was aware that she was laying on the ground. Her skin felt cold but her body warm, clothing damp from either sweat or water she wasn't sure. Fur tickled her neck and she realized that her ferret Niko was curled there, focusing more she could feel his little heart furiously beating. Niko you smell disgusting. She muttered more so to herself than him. So it must have been water, because he smelt wet as well. What happened? Kahtia felt eyes on her..

All of a sudden her head cleared and her instincts kicked in. Hands bound. Crackling from a fire. Night time. Rushing river nearby. Alert eyes on her. Knife? Yes, it's there. Feet? FREE.

Wait or run? Run or wait?

Kahtia slowed her breath which had started to quicken with her panic and continued to lay there with her eyes closed. This could be a delicate situation and she didn't want to act without thinking or she knew very well that it could result in her death. Sensing no magical presence her skin prickled. She can only use her magic if she is duplicating someone else's spell or power. Battle was not quite her strong suit. Oh yeah great sure this is just spectacular. I can't even fight my way out with magic. What could possibly make this any worse. She continued to fume under the surface and keep her unmoving composure on the outside.

Toven woke abruptly, Tanya’s growling drawing him from sleep. Hands on the pommels of his swords, he stood slowly, back still against the tree he had been sleeping against. His eyes, one of the few blessings of his Drow herritage, saw no movement in the trees around him.Perhaps Tanya saw nothing? She had never falsely alerted him before, though she was starting to age, even for a dire wolf. Glancing around, he saw the woman still bound near the fire. Perhaps I should wake her.. no, no, best to let her come to on her own. Walking lightly around the clearing he had picked as a camp, his eyes perceived nothing in the darkness around the camp. Perhaps the woman. Toven glanced at her again, deciding to take more care in case she was indeed a threat, he stepped out of the light and climbed into the branches above to keep watch himself.

Kahtia heard a deep throated growl coming from across the fire. In response Niko was on all fours hopping back and forth hissing at whatever animal lay before them. She almost missed the sound of someone treading lightly. Opening her eyes just enough to peer through her thick lashes she managed to catch a glimpse of somewhat dark skin and a weapon glinting briefly in the fire light. The growl she had heard had come from an alarmingly large wolf.

Too light for a Drow. A halfbreed maybe? Her muscles tightened and visions of her six years held as a slave to the heathen Drows floated before her eyes. I can't let that happen again. Shit. Kahtia had lost track of where her captor was and could neither see nor hear him.

Without thinking she was on her feet and dashing towards the river, maybe if she crossed it the wolf wouldn't be able to track her. If she could even make it to the river that is. Her head thudded with every stride and she only now realized that she must have hit her head, or been rendered unconscious by the halfbreed. Praying Niko would catch up and jump into her satchel per usual she continued to stumble through the darkness towards the sound of the rushing water.

If l possible she wished to avoid the river and simply continue to travel along side it in hopes of eventually arriving at a town or village where she could figure out where she was and get back to meet up with the Rebel army that had gathered. In the darkness she could barely see where she was going but she knew she was drawing close to the water by the sounds of it.

Kahtia skidded to a stop when she realized she almost ran straight in. Something tugged at her satchel and before he could go all the way in she whispered hurriedly Niko quick, my knife. She needed her hands untied if this was ever going to work. He seemed to understand what she requested, like he always does, and she felt him stretch from his foothold on the satchel and her dress and slowly relieve the knife of the strap on her thigh in a series of tugs by the cloth she had tied to the base of the blade for two purposes; Niko's easy grip in desperate situations, and to keep the blood from running down the fully metal dagger and making her hand slippery. Success! The tip of the blade pressed in her palm and she didn't even flinch. Grasping the blade firmly she rotated the blade quickly in her hands that were bound rather loosely behind her back and in one fluid motion she sliced the binding.

Looking over her shoulder she scanned the darkness to see if she was being pursued before she made her choice on which path she should take.

Brave, but foolish. Toven saw the woman rise and begin to run blindly through the trees. His dark vision made it easy to keep an eye on her, jumping branch to branch with ease. Keeping her close below, Toven glanced to her right, in the woods. He could just make out Tayna, darting through the brush, keeping her rather large frame low to stay out of sight but still following the girl. She is loud, probably scared and in her haste, careless. Toven knew how that felt, having run for his life on far too many occasions to count. Letting out a sigh, the drow drew his bow, pulled an arrow from his quiver and tied what looked like a weighted rope with knots on either end to the shaft, just below the arrowhead. Racing ahead, he got to a vantage point, drew back his bowstring and fired the arrow, aiming just ahead of the girls feet. The arrow struck the ground as Toven stepped off the branch, landing quietly on the ground ahead of her.

Darkness. That was all that lay before her eyes. A tiny growl started to rumble in Niko's little belly and she felt it vibrate in the pouch against her thigh. Leaves rustled so faintly that she scarce believed she had heard it. Briefly running it over in her head again she came to the same conclusion that her best chance of escape would be to cross the river and hopefully that wolf won't be able to pick her up. She'd be able to weave back over it further downstream and hopefully find some place to get some answers. Something hit the ground just ahead of her with a soft thud. All care leaving her body like a weight being dropped she mentally shrugged her shoulders and chuckled Here goes nothin! She spun towards the river and pushed off, her feet leaving the ground only for a moment before they caught across something unseen. Whaaaaaaaa!

Kahtia found herself jarred into a hard embrace Wait...I know...this is...familiar? All of a sudden her memories were clear. The Blood of the Mountain, her escape, the bridge, that horse...and this stranger. Them falling into the river. How on earth did they end up here? Did they float downstream? If so she can work her way back and still met up with the Rebel army before they make their exit. But somehow nothing felt like back home...there was a difference in the air here. Was the Drow attempting to save her? Why would someone of his kind want to save a human? Was this some kind of magic? The questions that managed to pile up in that breath of a moment was astounding, and they kept on.

Red? For a moment, it was all Toven could see again. Then the woman's hair, no longer jarred from running into his chest, fell back down. Looking down, he smiled, half to himself, that his bola had done what was needed. The girl could have attracted attention, and that is not what either of us need Tayna paced behind, her ears up, alert to any sound that could indicate danger. Toven nodded slightly to her and she sat. Less intimidating, the better for now, he thought, wouldn't want this woman to try to run off again into the woods.

Well, hello there. His voice, soothingly more elvish sounding that the guttural slur that the Drow typically used. Hoping that the woman would notice, My name is Toven. Are you alright?

Kahtia fell backwards on her bottom and found herself lookin up in the darkness at the Drow, with so little moonlight she could barely see his outline. As he spoke his accent was muddled with Elvish, but the Drow was still there. It was obvious that he wasn't a threat currently and he didn't plan to harm her. She stood haughtily and brushed off her dress. What. The. Hell. IS YOUR DEAL?! she spat, venom in her voice. Placing her hands on her hips and starting to pace in her anger, Niko followed suit and scampered out of her satchel to pounce and hiss nearly unseen in the poor lighting. Waving her hands now as she spoke Is this all you do Toven? Run around like a big dumb oaf and plow into people? Typical Drow. Muttering to herself she continued to pace and string out a series of sentences not becoming of a lady.

Abruptly she turned to face him, as if just now remembering that he was there during her little tirade. Her piercing blue eyes trained on where she predicted his eyes to be. Running a hand through her long slightly curly burgundy hair she took a deep breath and spoke more calmly, but she still threw her words like daggers. Well if you're not going to capture or kill me then to make up for your appalling rudeness you can direct me to the docks. I have a boat to catch. Crossing her arms she awaited his reply.

Well, woman, if I wanted you dead, you'd already be dead and floating down that river. Toven stood silently for a moment studying the woman, who still hadn't shared her name. Her scathing tone at the word Drow.. She clearly has reason to either be afraid or distrust.. As, she spoke, Tanya slowly came behind her. Whatever your intentions are, you may go about them, but we are clearly not in the same land as before. Swept far down river would be my assumption. Leaving a maiden like yourself alone, washed up on the shore, barely breathing, and unconscious wasn't something I could do without guilt. I bound your hands a precaution, not knowing who you were or if you'd try to slay me in my slumber. I hope you don't think ill of my caution.

Toven bowed slightly, his arms lightly waving in the typical Elvish fashion for greeting another. Hopefully she understands I don't have any intent to harm her, but with the Drow always looking for ways to capture him, he kept a hand on the pommel of one of his blades. Tanya continued to pace behind, ever vigilant.

Kahtia let out a long drawn out sigh, and rolled her eyes at his explanation before remembering that his vision at night would be far greater than hers, and he could see her reaction. Heh. Oops. Suddenly feeling foolish at her tantrum she subconsciously started to run her fingers down the length of her hair and attempt to pull the small knots free that had accumulated during her river experience fleeting attempt at an escape. After thinking for a moment she cleared her throat before she spoke again. I suppose I should thank you for your assistance. I'm not so sure I would have done the same had the situation been reversed. However, since you offered me no compensation for being an oaf, you can share your fire with me tonight, and tomorrow I will be on my way. Sounds fair, aye? Without waiting for a response started walking back towards the direction that they had come from...or so she hoped. Greeeeeeeat now I have to ask him for help after all that? Ugh.. Maybe not. Pausing to fiddle with her dress she waited for him to walk first so she could follow the sound of his light footsteps and hopefully not end up walking face first into a tree.

My name is Kahtia. She nodded towards the ground at the still pouncing ferret. That would be Niko, my partner in crime. Bending down and reaching out for him she felt the fur ball scamper into her hands. Instead of placing him in the satchel she put him up on her shoulders. With the threat of danger gone for now he was free to be a little more relaxed. He loved to lay there so he could see everything, and stay nice and cozy in the warming comfort of her neck and hair. Truth be told she preferred him there as well. Even though sometimes it's been a hindrance and if she's not careful and stoops over suddenly hall off. The guilt for dropping him stays with her longer than he even remembers though. Standing up now she searched for the outline of the halfbreed, his footsteps were so quiet he probably could have been long gone and she would still be standing here trying to talk to him in the darkness. Why can't it just be morning already?

The woods normally weren't graced with the presence of the mischief. But, after the Rat Queen's little scare with one of her loved ones trying to run away, Nessa has left many of the rats in her family to roam freely throughout the sprawling expanse called Kindle. The Breach is a trying place and Mother does not want to see a single one of her precious ones gone.

So, upon hearing quite the squabble betwixt two new faces, many unseen eyes gather their attentions toward the dark skinned one and his hostage woman. Well... Not a hostage it seems! Rats begin to gather quickly around the pair, all within a dark and shrouded aura that they have come to accept from Mother. Thoughts ring out amongst them.

    Food?

Not food.  New ones. New ones for food? No no! No mother here. Need mother's permission.  Mother! Mother! Moooother!

Soon the aura grows thick about the pair as they travel toward the fire. An ancient presence fills the vicinity and a woman's humming can be heard.  The disembodied sound whispering by both of ythe pair's  ears and converging on a spot in front of them. The swirling black aura, like smoke, rises from the ground. After a moment it shines red, lighting the area as a hand reaches out from the dark. Above the heavily tattooed fingers floats an orb of light. After a step forward, Mother enters.

The woman before them has her long dirty blonde dreadlocks piled atop her head in a bun. A scarlet scarf holding back the strays. Piercing red eyes open and curve upwards as the very petite woman grins. She wears naught but a light fabric blue dress with paisley designs at the bottom. Her tattoos glow as her aura envelopes her. She steps toward them, a sure and confident motion, before resting her hand on her hip. The smell of copper, blood, is in the air.

She scans the pair, her awakened senses taking in far more detail than any normal human. After another bit of time she furrows her brow.  A worried look one would expect from a grandmother.

"Oh good evening, dears. Forgive me, but I haven't seen new blood in ages. I bet you are horribly confused. Poor loves."

Her voice seems to leave more whispers in your ears. And eyes are upon you both. Thousands of them.

What sorcery is this?! A hand on the pommel of his sword still, he drew the other to his lips, but saw Tanya already, moving quietly in the still seemingly growing smoke. Toven took a step forward, placing himself between the new arrival and the red headed woman. Unsure of what to make of this other that had arrived so suddenly he muttered Stay behind me, hoping the woman would heed his instruction.

Magic, though I've never seen or felt such a presence tied to any magical power like this one before. though she sounded concerned

We are indeed turned around in these woods, perhaps, Madame, you tell us the way to Riversdale?

The air around them seemed to change, shift and pull apart somehow. Something was definitely happening. The darkness before her swirled like a black mist, Kahtia's eyes widened as it started to shade to red, and give off a mysterious glow. Her skin prickled into goosebumps as tendrils of magical power licked at her flesh as it filled the area, but Niko remained calm on her shoulder. His calm presence was curious, but she trusted her companion and if he's not raising an alarm then maybe there was nothing to worry about. If not....

Something started to appear out of the mist. A..hand? A woman. A GLOWY WOMAN! Kahtia heard Toven speak but not his words. She was transfixed on this woman that just appeared before them. Having seen a lot of different types of magic nothing much surprised her, but this, this felt like nothing she had ever felt before. Exhilarating! Just being able to TOUCH the power in the air made her giddy and her head spin. However, danger tainted the woman like a visible aura. Tread carefully.

Taking a couple steps towards the woman she gently pushed Toven out of her path. Move aside, Oaf. Now standing before the woman without him in the way, she couldn't help but chuckle as she talked. That...was...awwwweeesome! How do you DO that?! It felt right to bow to this woman, she wasn't sure why. But bending slightly at the hip and placing her right closed fist over her heart she dropped her eyes to the ground. This motion felt oddly familiar, though she didn't recall having ever done this to anyone. My name is Kahtia... straightening up quickly she pointed at Niko. Oh! And this is my ferret, Niko. He likes you which is weird. I mean..it's not weird that you're liked. I mean it's just he doesn't like people. Err.. not that you're not people. Just spooky, glowy and red eyed er normalish...I um...uh...
