More preaching, more lecturing... This thing, whatever it was, absolutely refused to shut up. Give in, it said, just die, it said...It spoke of guilt, remorse, sins that kept one up at night and plagues hid dreams with the consequences he had never faced from his actions. "Y-yeah, and so what?" He spat, struggling to breathe through the rancid stench that clogged his throat, and the copper tasting swill that trickled down from his decaying sinus.

    Yet, it was not wrong.

"I even know how you try to ignore the guilt that plaguess you, how you both have attempted to sssay the pay isss worth more then the weight of your actionsss. Sssss... How many nightsss have you laid awake, trying to convince yourssself while you knew what wasss going on inssside, jussst beyond that very door you and your friend leaned againssst? How true do you think that actually issss?"

Like serpents the creature's words slithered in his mind, disturbing old memories... conversations between him and his work partner. He saw him leaning next to that same brick wall, blotting out the weight of their labor with nicotine while they ensured no one accidentally stumbled on their little operation. Minute things, topics that they refused to linger upon overlong... But something about that damnable thing brought them to the surface again. He smelled the tar-laced smoke as it puffed from his lungs, the biting chill that pressed itself against his face in a crisp sheet while they looked up at what stars managed to fight their way through the light pollution of the inner city.

"....You think this place has a hell, Kev?"
"The fuck do you mean by that?"
"Dude... This is some bad shit we're doing. People are dying in there."
"Yeah? You just realizing this now or--"
"Don't you think there'd be some consequence by now?"
"I think you should shut up and stop thinking so hard, Dan. We get paid, a lot to do what we do. You can't just suddenly realize what you're doing when you're in this deep... The fuck you gonna do with that thought, huh? Gonna suddenly give yourself up, tattle to those digital fucks? They'll kill you, you know."
"... Well, when you put it like that I-I guess you have a point. I just thought that--"
"Do yourself a favor, don't think."

Don't think... Keep things simple, that was what he told Danny. Advice that even he could not follow. No amount of money could shake the thoughts from his head at night, the weight of a paycheck but a feather compared to the crushing gravity that came whenever he started to consider them. Those people. It was too late to grow a conscience, but now, he was beginning to wonder how true Danny's words rang. Now, he was dead, and as for Kevin, he would soon be dead. Although as the creature was reaching the end of his speech, he found that his demise refused to come. Lingering with only a strand of his life left, his breaths were labored, shuddering through the immense gash that split him open. From his attacker's touch it festered and grew fetid, if any light was available for him to see, likely he would find himself resembling a bloated corpse than a person.

"The fuck you waiting for then?" He challenged, already aware of his fate, yet not completely at peace. "You talk all this shit and then you don't do anything, huh? You just going to leave me like this, then?" Using the remains of his strength, Kevin reached with his emaciated limbs to grasp the creature's hands, attempting to pull them away from his head and free himself from their grip.

    Further back along the wall...

    Sshriiip!

"AAAAAUGH!" Skin tore like wet paper, a soft popping and tearing audible as a razor's edge dug into his abdomen. Blood trickled and flowed freely in a crimson river, hot and sticky. Oh but the pain, agony flared within the man's body like a wildfire, and Keith immediately forfeit his struggle, along with the deal he had made to the grinning visage that loomed in the shadows. "fuck...no, no... fuck, god..." he whimpered, his fingers brushing against something supple and warm, flesh that was never meant to meet the morgue's chilly air protested every attempt to be contained back within his body with another blinding lance, stabbing itself up through Keith's body like lightning.

He curled in on himself upon the floor, a hot puddle steadily growing beneath him.

Dave, however, had quickly rolled away from his attacker once he had fallen away from him, scalpel still in hand. Keith's blind stabbing had managed to  cut him deep, lucky jabs and thrusts spilling more of his lifeblood. He could tell already from the weakness in his body, the heaviness that began to settle in his limbs, that he would not have long before blood-loss took him. But maybe... With Keith out of the way he just took notice that the grinning creature had not made a move since they started fighting, merely standing there while they tried to kill each other. As for the second one, it was still far too preoccupied with one of their hired muscle.

Though he would not be lasting much longer, from what he could hear... and smell. Now was a very thin, very brief window of opportunity. If he could just get to the front door, if he could make it outside, he had a slim chance of survival.

Dave scrambled to his feet, the soles of his shoes slipping on the various fluids that mingled and spread across the floor in a shallow sea. His eyes, honed keen by adrenaline, could clearly see the moonlight filtering in from the windows further away. All he needed to do was be faster than that thing. Blood splashed beneath his feet and operating tables were thrown aside as he made a desperate race for the door.

It began with a scream. Oh a delicious and wonderful scream...!

    "AAAAAUGH!"

Predictably, Keith had fallen. He dropped to his knees, his hands coated a glistening red, and no longer thought about appeasing powers well beyond him. A pity, a pity... However, one could never really expect much from a greedy coward. Keith's minutes were burning down to the wire, but Dave? Ghostly eyes trailed his frantic footsteps, the man's pungent stink of desperation vivid in the ghoul's nostrils. A fighter to the bitter end, that Dave. But, wondered his tormentor, could Dave overcome the icy grips of death itself? Fear pursued after the sinner with otherworldly grace, his bare feet swift and nothing more than faint, gentle whisper upon the facility's concrete tile. Wispy shadows trailed from his bony shoulders like an ill omen.

And where do you think you are going? asked a sibilant voice, Dave's ears throbbing. Upon hearing those menacing words, it felt as if spears of ice pierced Dave's moist back, his head pounding and his hands frigid. Do you smell that, dear sinner? That was the smell of death.

    Your death.

A glint of gold flashed in the darkness, thunder rocking the dark.

    BANG, BANG, BANG!

Post by Mortis on Sun Jun 19, 2016 6:05 am

Surprisingly, Mortis' decaying touch did little to further the man's demise. A confused hiss escaped the ghoul, until he realized exactly why that was. Kevin, for all his spitting and snarling, was far too decayed for his fetid touch to work any further. "Ssss..." It was an embarrassing oversight, but one he refused to show to the dying, decaying pulp that was the second hired muscle.

There were many other ways for him to die this evening.

Perhaps Kevin thought he talked too much, perhaps he thought that he had too much to say, but in the end it brought up something interesting... An amused chuckle rocked Mortis' host as he gripped the struggling, dying man. "Your friend wasss right to quessstion, sssinner." His graveled hiss echoed within the mortuary. "For there issss neither here. I have passsed beyond life and death itssself, Kevin. I know what lurksss beyond the grave." There were no heavens or hells, no demons to damn the wicked or angels to preserve the pure. There was only code, only eternity. It was a reality that was both delightful and frustrating all at once, but the ghoul found his way to make the best of it.

Through the dark, the red pinpricks within Mortis' eye sockets rested upon where Danny's corpse lay upon the floor, a skeletal carcass webbed with strips of rotten flesh.

"Your friend wasss wissse to give in. Death isss the only releassse for your torment, Kevin. Yet you ssstill fight." Mortis hissed, those red pinpricks resting upon the man's gaunt face once more. "There isss nothing here for you to return to. Your friendsss are dying and dead, none of them have chosssen to return. They know that we would await them." The two monsters that happened upon their little establishment this fateful eve, righteous brothers in undeath, they would still be here no matter how many times Kevin returned from his brief vacation into the Pool of Souls.

Every time, no matter how long it took, until they finally gave up.

A scream tore through the mortuary, pained and sharp. However, it was not from Kevin, but Keith, as his innards spilled from his middle. Then, in the same breath, frantic footsteps. Dave was running for the door. "Sssss!" He quickly turned, talons still clenched around Kevin's neck, but Fear was already upon the fleeing, doomed man.

Three shots rang out, and Mortis could feel the terror in the man's mind as they hit their mark. Fear and the chilly grip of death was an ambrosia upon the already tainted air. Skeletal jaws parted as he returned his attention to the carcass within his hands, if Kevin was not going to leave this world on his own with already grievous wounds... He would need to help him along. "Sssstop ressissting, sssinner. You know it to be futile." There was a metallic clink of talons upon one of the rolling tables, Mortis' fingers seeking out a scalpel from the numerous surgical tools. One hand remained steadily upon Kevin's throat.

Though his targets were few, he could already feel his energy begin to wane from the exertion, from the nature of this damnable dimension. The opportunities, as Kev and his brother have said, may be many, but there were details  that the undead superfiend could go without. The blade rusted within his grip, a new tool of their twisted means of justice created with a mere touch, re-purposed from it's prior butchery. "Allow me to eassse your passsing." he hissed, before plunging it into his chest and twisting.

That's right, keep talking... Though Kevin's body was decayed beyond recognition, he still clung to life with a vice grip. Something had to be watching over him, he had to have a purpose, a reason to remain alive and yet suffering. Whether it be delusion from being decayed so extensively, or adrenaline, Kevin decided he had figured out why. To him, it was because someone had to avenge his friends, and he was going to be that guy.

    Somehow.

A scalpel stabbed towards his chest, and the man managed to struggle enough to move away from it's rusted, pointed tip. "Ever thought of shutting the fuck up when you kill someone?" He snarled through his teeth. "Maybe then you'd actually hit something!" But by all means, monster, keep lecturing and carrying on. It merely gave him more time to figure out where this creature was standing in the dark. Although the flashes from gunfire enough enough to give him an idea, as a skeletal face was illuminated in the wake of three quick shots. It towered above him, gaunt and emaciated. What was this thing?

He did not linger upon it too long, however, as he mustered the strength to kick out at his attacker once again.

Dave, meanwhile, was not so lucky. He heard a voice ring in his head, it's presence icy and disturbing. It was them, they were in his head again.

"No! Get Out!" He cried, eyes bulging as he hastened his already desperate break for the front door. He would never make it outside.

Three shots rang out in the morgue, and three new holes tore into his middle. He gasped in pain, stumbled and collapsed upon the tile with a screech of his shoes upon the floor and a solid thud. One hand clutched where the bullets had ripped through him, sticky, red warmth oozing onto his palms. Wordlessly he looked up, meeting the grinning visage of the one that had hung Steven with his own entrails. " N-no! ...Not like this!" he sputtered, remembering the scalpel in his other hand. The man had nearly forgotten about it in the excitement of trying to escape this cursed tomb of a building.

Keith writhing in agony on the floor was forgotten, as was Kevin's plight and the deaths of Danny and Steven. For now, the room seemed to tunnel itself until there was only him and the grinning specter that loomed overhead. His arm shook as he drew it back, surgical steel glinting in the low light from the creature's helmet before he quickly threw it in its direction.

    ...Clink!

Dave gambled everything on a toss and lost it all, the scalpel cutting through the open and nothing else. Such a pity, really... His tormentor remained untouched and beyond the reach of harm, gnarled hands extending out from within the undulating darkness. "It isss time, sssinner," beckoned the voice. All warmth, all hope, gradually ebbed from Dave's freezing, stiffening body; a perfect condition for the hard, yellowed talons sinking into the fabric of his clothing. "Come to me..." said a chilling whisper. False comforts eased into the man's psyche as Dave found his feet hovering inches over the floor, blood quietly dripping in soft pat pat pats downward.

Do you see it, Dave? Do you see the herald of your liberation? The sickening stench of rot infiltrated Dave's nose like a vile plague, his eyes watering. Before him stood the specter, its glowing grin a pale blue light, and within its otherworldly eyes he saw death - his death.

Something icy cold wrapped around his neck and squeezed, Dave no longer enjoying the luxury of air as he breathed. "Patience..." it soothed. The pressure over his windpipe increased, the pain a dull aching throb. "Patience... Patience... Dying isss easssy, dying isss good. Clossse your eyesss and sssimply let go." Let go, Dave... Let go of your sinful ways, of your impure vessel. Let go and embrace freedom.

There was a resounding - snap! - and Dave would suffer no more.

    Let go...

    THUD! THUD!

Kevin's very confusing inspiration managed to grant him some equally confusing luck. Two withered boots knocked against Mortis' host, the dying man managing to find him through the impenetrable dark. However, it had the same effect as kicking a reinforced brick wall. The superfiend's host refused to buckle or bend as he held the man in his grip.

A grip that was proving to be less and less lethal as the minutes ticked by, frustratingly enough.

"Ssss!" The growing confidence of this particular sinner was growing to be equally frustrating to boot. In the background he could hear his brother successfully sentencing his second sinner, bringing an end to a entertaining mind game; while Mortis was still struggling to finish off the second of the hired muscle that he had attacked earlier on. Discarding the rusted scalpel he had been unable to dispatch what was essentially a ripened corpse in his hands, Mortis took the man's advice to heart.

After all, his words were doing little to get through to him to begin with.

One hand gripping Kevin's throat, Mortis sank his talons into the bone of his skull and brutally wrenched it from his shoulders with a sickening Pop!

    -snap!-

    Pop!

In an instant two more lives were snuffed out, Dave's neck crumpling in Fear's grip, and Kevin's head ripping off his shoulders. Alas, it was that killing blow that not only snuffed Kevin's life, but also his fighting spirit. His carcass laid limply in the superfiend's grip. Whereas Dave... He acted differently than the rest of the group upon his demise. A cloud of blue code erupted where the man once was held in Fear's claws, briefly illuminating the two in the dark before dispersing. Dave, ever eager to survive, evidently did not wish to rot with the rest.

However, there was still one more life to deal with this evening. In the corner... Hear his ragged breaths, his pained sobs. Keith, disabled and curled in on himself, remained upon the floor, attempting to make himself as small as possible. His thoughts were feeble, frantic and swimming with shock. Nothing too intelligible could be attained from them except the overwhelming fear that clung to him like a damp blanket.

    It was over.

    Finished.

Two souls faded into oblivion, be they a swirl of azure code or a lifeless husk beneath their feet. Either way, the iniquitous will no longer be capitalizing on a trade most foul - the lawful dead had seen to that. Fear rejoined his brother with languid, hushed footsteps. "The facility isss oursss," he rasped, the profound bass of his voice resonating. "And with itsss acquisssition, procuring hossstsss for our ssspiritisss will no longer be of issssue. It would be wissse fortifying the building to prevent any undesssirable meddling." No use letting some uppity hero figure barge in and make a mess of the place. And speaking of messes...

Otherworldly eyes glanced off to the side. "Hmm... and what of their leader?" he asked, facing Mortis. "The sssinner'sss mind isss wrought with ssshock; it will take effort to retrieve anything worthwhile." Effort that could be better spent elsewhere. If Keith had the potential to be useful, now was the opportunity to squeeze what little value was left of the man. If not, however... "We can take our time with him, nice and ssslow. Perhapsss he will reveal more hidden cellsss throughout the Outer Dissstrict, or a mental recollection of hisss clientsss and sssuppliersss?" The rabbit hole could honestly go either way.

It could also, even... lead to danger.

The possibility caused the helmeted ghoul to hesitate. "Sss..." Would it be worth pursuing whatever lowlife scum frequented these ghettos? His zealous urges of course said 'yes', but the learned veteran of Portal Breach in him knew better. Unwilling to stumble into yet another trap, Fear looked to his brother for insight. "What sssay you, Mortisss? What do you feel isss mossst wissse?"

With that final wrench, Kevin's mortal coil released and his body fell to pieces at his feet. Taught sinew crackled and popped as the undead's talons released, and the skull clattered to the floor to wobbily totter towards one of the disheveled operating slabs. At last, the second muscle had been killed, though with far more effort than the undead superfiend had thought necessary. In the time it took to destroy Kevin and Danny, much of his energy was already spent.

    And Dave...

Blue illuminated and room briefly, foiling their cover of abysmal shadow and revealing both Mortis and Fear for a scant moment. Black, putrid ooze stained the sheep-skulled undead's hands and forearms, though it was quickly shedding itself from his talons in dusty flakes. His aura would deal with the rest in time, though the fetid stains upon his overcoat would demand more care. His brother, by comparison looked far more clean, blood staining his talons and little else. Regardless, the blue flash of light brought forth a realization within his empty skull. Four were dealt with, and one was left unaccounted for. He could just as easily return to life as he could remain in this dimension's strange idea of a temporary purgatory.

Slow footsteps clapped softly against the cold, hard floor, rousing Mortis from his thoughts. The place was theirs, though fortification would be wise to deter any heroic types from breaking in. Or at the very least, any who thought that the Outer District was their territory and theirs alone. Though, a fortified morgue all the same would draw attention without some finesse. The ghoul's empty eye sockets focused their attention upon the whimpering form of Keith, curled up against the wall and making a futile attempting to hold his insides in. "At timess the bessst defenssse isss a good bluff, my brother." A gnarled talon pointed to the dangling remains of Steven, "Thessse foolsss may not be of any ussse to usss in the matter alive, but their ssspiritsss will undoubtedly be resstlesss, and our pressence will only amplify it out further. Let them guard thisss place in death, and deter any would-be interlopersss." The living were already uneasy around places that housed the dead, and to find such places haunted would only frighten them off further. Yet... The denizens of this dimension were oddly determined.

Gore flaked from Mortis' talon and he turned it away from the hanging corpse to tap against his bony chin thoughtfully, an addendum coming to mind. "However, it could be prudent to keep sssomeone corporeal around... Jussst in casse. A few idle handsss to keep out the busssier-bodiess." His empty gaze turned to Keith once more, while poltergeist activity could be useful in its own right, it did little compared to the deterring power of an actual physical person wandering the premises and keeping up appearances.

"Hmm... and what of their leader? The sssinner'sss mind isss wrought with ssshock; it will take effort to retrieve anything worthwhile."

Mortis' gaze returned to his brother, his neck creaking as he nodded in agreement. Indeed, the man was far too shocked and wrought with pain to give them anything worthwhile via psychic digging around. Perhaps a simpler method would prove more forthcoming, as Fear so gladly suggested. Hm, temping, very tempting... "Perhapsss, brother, perhapsss." he hissed thoughtfully, his tail disturbing the tattered edges of his overcoat as it curled and slowly flexed from side to side. Finding other hidden cells would be useful for acquiring bodies, as well as possibly more locations to use as a backup should their morgue be tampered with. Finding the clients and suppliers however would open them up to a vast sea of persons, from the ones who bought the organs, to the sellers, and then the ones who bought the pilfered parts both wittingly and unwittingly.

Even so, as tempting as it was to pursue this matter further, he shared his brother's disinterest in getting sucked into yet another clusterdrokk over zeal and earnest desire to wipe a few more iniquitous lives from this dimension. Not all of them stayed dead, and not all of them were content to let scores remain unsettled. His thoughts traveled once again to the one sinner who "got away"; Dave. His desire to survive at all costs and cunning resourcefulness was admirable, but should he grow bold... An entertaining quarry could just as easily become an irritating prick in their sides.

Dave could be dealt with later, Mortis decided to himself, once he returned to the world of the living, he could be tracked down and dealt with accordingly. For now, there was the present, the was Keith. Lengthy, emaciated limbs strode over in measured steps, gore wetly meeting Mortis' feet as he approached the leader upon the floor. He knelt, claws flexing with a rigid pop and crackle as he scooped the man up from the tile with such care that it would nearly seem tender. "Sssss... If he isss of no ussse to usss alive, let usss take our time with thisss sssinner." If not for information, then for their enjoyment.

In the dark, Mortis rose to his feet and found his way to one of the unoccupied steel slabs, Keith held in his arms like a bride. The disemboweled man was deposited upon it with as much care and intent as he did when plucking him off the floor. Red pinpricks flicked up in the dark to his brother, the rolling dolly of operating tools grasped with an outstretched hand and dragged over with a squeaky protest from its wheels that would undoubtedly send shivers up one's spine. The tools were perused with a steady, pondering hand, talons brushing over the various instruments of medical butchery, pausing over a ready, unused scalpel blade. It's fresh metal was curved, hook-like.

"Sssss..." This would work for a proper start to their interrogation.

He exchanged the head, tightening it on with care before holding down the wounded man's body with one hand, restraining a leg firmly to the table. "Would you care for the firssst turn, brother?" Mortis offered, the scalpel held neatly in his talons despite how easily they dwarfed the utensil.
