    And the third attempt...

They ended up taking a short ride in Ryo-Ohki after all, as it was a fair distance between the area in the residential district where the bulletin board was and the outer district's passages into the underground. Grodus still glanced around the cabbit starship's cabin in wonder, as he was only on board one previous time before. His people's technology paled in comparison to Washu's, even if they had managed to build sentient machines capable of using arcane power like himself.

The mage almost reached out to touch one of the floating crystals, though he held back, not knowing how the cabbit or her owner would react to it. To his surprise, said crystal hovered closer to bump against his hand anyway, a faint yet satisfied 'Myaa!' echoing from it. With permission given, Grodus ran his fingers over the facets, not quite expecting to feel the subtle warmth the crystal gave off. It was oddly calming that there were other inorganic beings around, some so full of life that they didn't seem all that different from their squishier counterparts. Something about that thought still rang hollow for him, as he wasn't sure how he was living was a 'life', so to speak...

Well, Kev had hope for him, didn't he? That would just have to be enough for the moment, as they were coming up on their destination.

    ---

It didn't take long to disembark from Ryo-Ohki, and Washu sent the cabbit off, either back to the lab or to go find Ryoko. Grodus appreciated that, as it was hard enough just asking Washu alone to help him out, nevermind anyone else. Especially given what he expected to happen as they ventured further into the depths, even with the scientist tagging along...

The technomage led the way, now, through the tunnels that led to the ruins surrounding the Thousand Year Door. He was just starting to feel some nervousness rearing up from the back of his mind, but it didn't seem as intense as it was when he wandered through by himself. Ah, there was the first warp pipe; he supposed he should explain it to his companion. "There, that's our first guidepost. Don't let it's ordinary appearance fool you, it's a warp pipe from my world; jumping into it will take us a bit closer to our destination."

And of course Washu summoned Ryo-Ohki, in the end it turned out that was more of a walk than she was really willing to put up with. It was interesting to subtly observe Grodus for their short trip as well. With his curse and being able to see his face, it was easier to notice how awestruck the mage was over the crystalline starship. It likely would've been more intense the first time he was aboard, when Ryoko was flying the ship in pursuit of that dragon involved with Uriel, but this still stirred the scientist's pride. Nope, no way he ever saw anything like the cabbit back in his world, even if magic was prevalent enough that machines could use it.

Washu caught him reaching for a crystal and hesitating, so she mentally nudged Ryo-Ohki to move said crystal to him instead. Thankfully her hunch was right, the contact allowing Grodus to settle himself a bit more. Perhaps she caught the ghost of a smile appearing on his face for a moment, but when she looked again she wasn't sure. Again she found herself wondering just what was going on with the cursed mage, knowing there had to be more to it than getting turned human. If it was in the cards for her to find out, then she would. For the moment they were coming up on the outer district, all those thoughts were put aside in favor of finding a good spot for Ryo-Ohki to set them down.

    ---

The scientist sent Ryo-Ohki off once she and Grodus were on the ground, knowing damn well that even as cute as she was, it was best for the cabbit to be elsewhere. The mage had almost certainly put that message up in absolute desperation, so there was no point in making it any harder for him.

Since Grodus apparently knew the way, Washu let him take the lead. She never really had much reason to go into the outer district before. There was one area of the underground that seemed to have interesting readings from her satellites, but the amount of power she picked up coming from there convinced her it was best not to poke around too hard. The mage was heading in the opposite direction from there, thankfully.

Eventually they arrived at what looked like the remains of some back street in an old port town, and a very obvious green pipe sticking up out of the ground. Of course Washu again brought out the laptop to take a look at this odd thing, not sure what to make of it. At the explanation, she nodded, the description lining up with the readings she got. "A warp pipe, huh? It's always interesting to see the different methods of travel various worlds have. Well then, I'm going first~"

With that, she dismissed her computer and jumped right into the pipe. The sound the pipe made as she jumped into it was kind of odd, though the trip was very fast indeed, and it made the weird noise again as she exited. Looking around the area she emerged into, Washu blinked in surprise. As far as the eye could see, all around were the worn stones and faded artistry of a ancient ruined city!

Soon enough the pipe behind her made the weird noise again and Grodus emerged. Washu turned towards him, eager to know more. "Wow, who knew all of this was underneath Portal City? I wonder if it's been here the whole time?"

Some of the people on the Breach that Grodus encountered, they would certainly argue that jumping in a random green pipe wouldn't get you anywhere. Washu, though, she took the idea in stride and then promptly jumped in. He was a little surprised at that, but after a second jumped in afterward, not wanting to be left alone for long.

The trip through the pipe was short, and almost immediately after the technomage emerged, Washu had questions about the area for him. Grodus took a moment to think, trying to recall what he knew about the place. "These ruins were previously beneath the city of Rogueport in my universe. If this world works by any sense of logic, if they were not here at the start, then the ruins likely appeared upon either my arrival or that fool Mario's."

He glanced around, taking it all in a bit more than he had the last few times he was down there. Figuring Washu would appreciate learning the history of the ruins, Grodus spoke again as he kept leading the way. "This was apparently a very prosperous city at one point, but that all changed a thousand years ago. A great cataclysm struck, and the city vanished beneath the earth in a single night. Rogueport was eventually built atop the site, mainly due to the rumors of a great treasure sealed within the ruins . . . though it turned out the treasure and the source of the cataclysm were one and the same."

Just thinking about that made the mage's anxiety spike a bit. Why in the world did he ever think he could bring such power to heel as easily as he assumed? With what the Shadow Queen did to him in this reality, Grodus was certain she would've killed him if given the chance in their home universe. If he ran into her again down here...

Hnngh, no, if he kept thinking along those lines there was no way he'd make it to the Door, even with Washu along. The queen was probably occupied with something in the depths of her palace, she wouldn't be lurking right there at the door considering the vague memory he had of X dealing with her. Thankfully he caught himself before the train of thought made him freeze up, though it might not pass below the scientist's notice. Still, the mage shook it off as best he could and kept walking.

"Hmm, where is that next warp pipe?" Grodus looked around a little more, soon spotting it nearby. "Ah, there it is. There are some stairs beyond this one, then another warp pipe, and after a bit more walking we'll arrive at our destination."

Having said that, the technomage hopped into the warp pipe, not waiting for Washu to follow.
