    Looking for a certain scientist...

Grodus of course hadn't mentioned to Kev the exact reason why he was unable to find a Crystal Star, and thus why he remained cursed. Given the other company in the Sanctuary at the time, however, he didn't have much choice otherwise. Fear would never let him live it down if he caught wind of it . . . his pride simply wouldn't allow him to suffer such humiliation.

Between pride and the simple fact that Kev had other things to worry about, that was why the mage didn't bother asking him for help with his little problem.

Unfortunately, he wasn't going to make it to the Thousand Year Door without help at this rate. Every time he got decently close, he would always freeze up somewhere along the way and then turn and run. No matter what he tried, no matter how hard he struggled to hold it back, something managed to trigger that oddly suffocating fright and he couldn't help but flee in its wake.

If someone else came along, perhaps it wouldn't be quite as overwhelming, or at the very least they could physically prevent him from running away. That was ultimately what brought him out to the bulletin board on this day, though that came with its own problems.

Namely, who in the Breach could he trust with this? There was Kev, but the alien was having his own issues, maybe the Hyruleans from the inn but they likely wouldn't let him keep the Crystal Star once he found it. Eventually his thoughts drifted to the disaster the year before, and just who might be willing to help him out, especially as it could be in spite to the Dark Judges.

Washu Hakubi was a bit hard to get a hold of, however . . . and so Grodus resorted to posting a message on the board addressed to her, hoping she was at least monitoring the area.

Indeed Washu was monitoring the area around the Bulletin Board, she currently had a tiny crab-shaped drone stationed there to observe things. It liked to hang out in a tree near the front of the board, where it had an easy view of the people stopping by and could scan over the various postings.

The little thing watched Grodus post his request, scanned it once it had a clear view, and once it spotted the mention of its master it started transmitting straight to the lab.

It didn't take more than a minute for Washu to teleport onto the scene, the sound of air being displaced startling the mage in front of her. He turned to look, though he probably wasn't expecting the reaction he got...

The scientist glanced over whoever this was, their looks registering far more than the clothing. Red eyes, long and pale hair... her first thoughts were anything but pleasant and several of her Light Hawk Wings went visible. If this was Kagato she would kill him right here and now, to hell with the ISOs!

Thankfully, Washu had a slightly better handle on her temper than Ryoko might. She managed to pull her anger back a bit, and took note that this person's hairstyle wasn't an exact match for Kagato's, nor was it wavy enough. His eyes were lacking the gold sclera as well.

With those two pieces of data, Washu managed to calm herself down the rest of the way, and her Light Hawk Wings went back to wherever she hid them. The robes this person was wearing were kind of familiar, but altered just enough to be confusing; asking would get her farther than just assuming.  "All right, who are you and what do you want? You're lucky I'm observant; you look very similar to an old enemy of mine..."

For his part, Grodus had taken a step or two back at the sight of the goddess almost instantly looking hostile, though he managed to keep from calling up his barrier. Just as well, as Washu calmed fairly quickly afterwards. He sighed faintly in relief, though that sigh turned a little more exasperated as it turned out she didn't recognize him.

"I-I suppose I should have expected this, I look nothing like I normally do, except for my choice in clothing. I am Grodus, believe it or not." The mage fidgeted a little, not entirely sure how to go about things now that he had Washu's attention. "I've been cursed into this form since the beginning of summer. Being fully mortal isn't entirely terrible, but I wish to be myself again . . . besides that, if my minions were to suddenly appear on the Breach, they would not recognize or acknowledge me in this state."

Grodus dug around in one of the pockets in his robes, bringing out the Magical Map. "This will lead me to an artifact that might break the curse, or at least it would if it did not need reset." Said map still bore the surroundings of Rogueport, not matching anything found in Portal Breach at all. "To do that, it needs to be taken to a certain door in the underground of the city . . . I've been unable to make it down there by myself so far."

"I, well..." More fidgeting, and Grodus found himself reaching up with one hand to grip some of his hair, trying to calm some of his anxiety. In the end he looked away from Washu when he spoke again. "I suppose I am asking for an escort? Out of everyone I've encountered here, you are one of the few I would trust with this..."

Oh, NOW Washu recognized the robes, and the staff Grodus held in the crook of one arm. He wasn't much taller than her in this state, and the pale blue hair and red eyes were something of a striking combination. She hovered there and let him explain things, arching one eyebrow a bit. A curse of humanity, well that was a little different. Usually it was humans getting cursed into other creatures, not the other way around. At least in the old fairy tales she read when her own human form was still a child, anyway.

"Cursed, huh? Well, let's see if I can do anything from here, first of all. No need to go adventuring if I can just break it myself..." Out came the infamous holographic laptop, and the scientist started scanning Grodus for whatever the problem might be. Life signs were stable, though certainly different from the last time she encountered him, astral pattern was largely similar, and while the energy that was his magic had grown it was quite stable.

Washu had to look very deeply indeed to find the issue, and frowned faintly at what she discovered. "I can't quite read the whole way to base code yet, but there is definitely something wrong here... not only that, but I think I see a certain portal god's handiwork as well. I can't touch whatever he did, though I wouldn't want to as it's the only thing keeping your form stable right now. I would say that artifact you mentioned is your best bet; it takes magic to break other magic, I imagine."

At that Washu sent the computer away again, and took an appraising glance over the cursed mage before her. Somehow she had a hunch that his issue with getting to that door wasn't really about strength. If Grodus felt this was the only way, who was she to argue, though? Honestly with how intriguing this was, she made her decision already, but now she voiced it. "If you need an escort, you've got one. As for any price, just let me study that artifact for a bit once you find it. There's not much else I would really want."

Grodus was honestly waiting for Washu to bring out the laptop, given how much she used it to check out all the varied strange things in that blasted forest. He held still for the scanning, a few of the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end for a moment when he noted he could feel some of it. Thankfully the odd sensation passed fairly quickly, though he shook himself briefly to drive off any remaining tingles.

It didn't take the scientist long to come up with an analysis, Grodus tilting his head slightly at the mention of 'base code'. Huh, maybe that had something to do with this place supposedly being a digital universe? It was also interesting to have confirmation on Judge Fear's hunch that Portal-X had something to do with his current predicament. "So, that X person did have a hand in this? I suppose I should be thankful he altered this curse enough to allow me freedom to do something about it... though I would have preferred being older than this."

A pause, as he realized that might not be taken too well from the equally young-looking Washu. "Um, no offense, of course. That's at least a form of your own choosing, I'm currently trapped this way."

The mage's expression brightened as Washu decided to accept his request. "You will? Oh, thank you! I'll allow you to examine the artifact when I find it, though I am unsure of the data a Crystal Star could provide you. Just, don't expect to hang onto it for long; it is best for a magical artifact of that strength to be kept by a mage. With that settled, shall we get going now? The sooner we get to the door, the sooner I can be normal again."

Wow, something definitely happened to temper Grodus's sometimes bad attitude a bit, if he was being this considerate. Again, Washu couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to it than just getting cursed, but she supposed she would find out on the way.

The scientist shrugged at the words, not really bothered by Grodus's remarks. "None taken. I prefer this form for my own reasons, but I can see how others would rather be older in appearance. Being in my adult form certainly makes buying alcohol a lot easier, I can tell you that much!"

Washu let him go on, smiling faintly at how grateful he sounded. He was probably getting pretty desperate, given how he seemed perfectly fine to try and power through the obstacles in that terrible forest on his own. That was a year ago; a lot could happen in a year, or even in a handful of months. "Crystal Star, hmm? Well, almost any sort of data is interesting, especially if it's about something from another universe. As far as it being useful to me goes, well, that depends on a lot of things. If you're prepared, we might as well get going; lead the way."

With that the cursed mage nodded, and started to head in the direction of the Outer District. Washu followed after him, though if it ended up being too long a walk on the surface, she would call Ryo-Ohki to at least get them to the city limits.
