To find a Crystal Star, you need the right map...

    Date: 6/9/2015

Grodus woke from his impromptu nap in the Sanctuary feeling rather numb, all things considered. He had dreamed of his minions, of all those he would likely never see again, making his sleep rather restless. Still, since he burned the meager amount of energy his currently organic body held with the outburst before that, he remained asleep until now regardless.

Damn that blasted Judge to whichever hell he'd crawled from! That was the second time Fear managed to see him break in some manner; the technomage swore it would be the last as he headed out of the Sanctuary. Ugh, he spent too much time there today already, it was time to see to returning himself to normal.

And so off to the library he ventured, in the hopes of finding that Magical Map last seen in Mario's hands back in his own universe. Hopefully the item in question was just loose somewhere on the shelves . . . if the Map somehow managed to find its way back into the treasure chest that contained it previously, Grodus would need help with retrieving it.

The seal on that chest would only open for the pure of heart, after all.

Yes, he knew quite well his typical luck would have him find that map still in its container, but for the moment he needed to start looking. He browsed the shelves with his eyes as he walked along, though he was also reaching out with his sense of the magic around him. Like the name said, the map indeed was magical, and Grodus remembered the faint traces of power it gave off.

Hmm, maybe it was over in this direction?

The first half hour or so of wandering around the Library didn't seem to net Grodus any results. The building was huge, after all, he really couldn't expect miracles or anything, at least not immediately. Even his ability to sense magic had a limit, especially now that he was organic . . . he wasn't sure if the library really had a limit, though. If it had the collected works of countless worlds, there was no way this place could be an ordinary building, at least not on the inside.

The technomage looked at the rows of shelves out ahead of him, trying to focus his resolve. Even normally this place was a bit overwhelming, but now that he was a lot shorter and smaller, it was downright intimidating. How in the world was he supposed to find one map in the midst of all of this, anyway? There were certainly other magical documents nearby, he could detect some of the lingering enchantments on those, but not the very specific spell woven to track the Crystal Stars.

Hnngh, it had to be here somewhere, it just HAD to be! Finding that stupid map would be the easiest route, if it was nowhere to be found then he would have to search around the Breach without directions at all. That was what happened last time, in the end he had to rely on Mario finding them all for him. Maybe the places dragged from his universe could be a starting point, but he did not sense the Crystal Stars at all when he was there before.

Feeling disheartened and very tired from all the walking, Grodus eventually had to sit down on one of the many chairs scattered about the library. Maybe if he took a short break to regain his energy and focus, he would have an easier time finding his target.

If coin is hit, the map is very close by, if miss then it's a good bit further away.

Having taken that small break, Grodus stood back up and resumed his searching. The other varied enchanted books and manuscripts in the vicinity, he still picked up on those, but tried his best to tune them out. There was only one particular magical signature he needed to find, and so far nothing seemed to match, but it had to be around here somewhere.

Another half hour of walking around the shelves went by and at that point, Grodus leaned against one of said shelves, sighing in exhaustion and frustration. Maybe he should have asked for help with this? Though, he couldn't really explain to others just what sort of magical energy he was looking for. The best option he could think of was maybe a psychic could pick up on whether or not an item was from the same universe as something else. The problem with that was, the only one with that sort of skill was probably Judge Fear, and the judge wouldn't help him much normally let alone now that he was organic.

No, the technomage was going to have to do this alone, and to that end he tried his best to focus. Breathe in, breathe out, try to settle his nerves . . . if he wanted his abilities to be at their best he needed to be calm. Grodus let his eyes drift shut as he extended his magical senses outward, as far as he could bear to stretch them. It felt like it took forever, but out there on the farthest reaches of his senses, he picked up on some faint traces of his target!

It was off to his right, and he quickly took off in that direction, hoping the map wasn't very far from him.

Ugh, how much longer was he going to need to search this place? Grodus still had that faint trace on the magical map, but it hadn't really gotten all that stronger as he moved ahead. He still kept going though, but his stomach began to remind him he hadn't had anything to eat all day.

Augh, all this human weakness! Though he'd gotten mostly used to living in his cursed form, of course he still longed to be himself again. He wouldn't get tired so quickly or have to sleep as much, and he wouldn't have to remember to eat as he didn't require it normally. His stomach still growled even as he thought that, and he made a promise to himself to go find some food. Well, after he found the map, of course.

Again Grodus reached out with his senses, hoping to zero in on the map now that he was closer.

Again, Grodus got the faintest response from the map, leaving him to wonder if he was even going in the right direction. It seemed closer than it was, but not nearly enough. He was starting to get a headache due to his hunger but still he pressed on. If he just pushed himself a tiny bit further, then he could certainly claim his prize soon enough.

Another ten minutes passed, though it almost felt like an hour, given how loudly his stomach was growling. Fortunately, in the space of that ten minutes, the map's enchantment became much easier to detect. In fact, if the technomage rounded the corner ahead of him, it should be right there among the nearby shelves. Hopefully it wouldn't be sealed in that treasure chest again . . .

Grodus rounded the corner, then glanced around at the shelves. Not there, not on that one, or that other one either. Given he couldn't see it immediately, the mage sent out a weak pulse of magic in the hopes of getting the map to respond. About thirty seconds passed, and then he spotted a faint glow coming from one of the books on a shelf to his right. He grabbed said book, noted it seemed to be about Rogueport's history, and flipped it open. He quickly shuffled the pages and sure enough, right at a passage about the theories surrounding the Great Cataclysm, someone had used the Magical Map as a bookmark.

The Map still had a faint glow around it from earlier, though it was fading. Grodus unfolded the map, looking it over. He didn't see the locations of any Crystal Stars upon the old map, and in fact didn't seem to have much on it other than the basic locations of Rogueport and the villages around it. Hnnngh, did that mean the map would be useless for Portal Breach?

A low growl emerged from the technomage, and he very nearly called to the flames of his magic and unleashed them, or he would have if he didn't recall something from his world. Wait, maybe it wasn't so useless after all . . . what was that quote Beldam always said about the map?

Right, 'Hold the Magical Map aloft before the entrance to the Thousand-Year Door. Then the stars will light the way that leads to the stones of yesterday.'

A wave of dizziness suddenly swept over him, Grodus needing to steady himself against the nearby shelving unit. That meant... oh gods, did he really have to go back there, really? From the way his legs were trembling, he couldn't help but sink the whole way to the floor. The shaking quickly spread to the rest of him, and he wrapped his arms around himself, trying to ride it out.

Maybe... it wouldn't be so bad staying in this form a while longer?

Once his trembling faded, Grodus got to his feet, picking up his staff as well as the book and map from where he dropped them. He wasn't about to leave the map here after it took so long to find it, and the book could be useful, so they both were stuffed into hidden pockets in his robes.

With that he left the library, probably heading back to the inn as his stomach wasn't getting any quieter.
