    Survival of the Fastest

Post by K.A.R.R. on Thu Jul 30, 2015 4:00 am

    Time: Afternoon
    Date: August 20, 0005

Challenger: A large black X is neatly scribed in this box with pen ink
    The Challenge: A Race
Type of Challenge: If enough participants join, it can be a Skirmish. If only one or two participants sign up, it is a Duel.
    Description:

A lone flyer sits tacked to the bulletin board, the paper crisp and neat as if it had been just printed. No true name claims the challenge, the only clue to who had issued it being a large black X inscribed on the name line in ink. It's contents are neatly printed, although the font seems as if it should have come from an archaic computer than anything recently produced, the ink even has a strong smell to it... Although why would anyone want to sniff a piece of paper? Especially when what was written upon it was far more important. The cryptic challenge was printed plainly for all to see; A race, one that went around most of Portal Breach's highway system.

Attached to the neatly printed out flyer is a map, complete with a route marked in red that traces the length of the highways from the starting point in the grasslands,up through the mountains and down into the desert, down past the shoreline and back to the Outer District of Portal City. Beneath it, there is a note typed in the same black ink as the rest of the flyer, stating the rules:

-All participants must stick to the highway route marked on the map
-No flying vehicles, only terrestrial ones
-If a racer gets to the Outer District first, they win
-If all the other racers are destroyed or forfeit, the last one standing will win
    -Every participant for themselves
    -Violence encouraged

At the very bottom of this page was a bolded date for the race and a meeting point:

Participants will meet at the traffic light in front of the Grasslands Highway on-ramp at 8:00PM, August 23rd. The race starts when the light turns green.

Behind the map was another neatly printed page, this one a roster for any participants who wished to join, five numbered, empty lines sat waiting to be filled in.

Who would be so bold as to accept the mysterious racer's challenge?

    Recommended Level: 30+
Reward: Levels, points for participation, bragging rights
Additional Notes: Psst! Feet are vehicles too!

    Duelists/Skirmishers (Use one where appropriate):
    1. Knockout
    2. Livewire
    3.
    4.
    5.

Today was a new day! Or so Knock Out told himself, as he walked down the sidewalk with numerous grocery bags in his servoes. Indeed, it was a bright shiny day and after a stop into the city for some much needed supplies, it was time for his daily visit with the bulletin board. Ever since the mech and put up his job offer, he returned daily to check and see if anyone else had expressed interest. ...And also to make sure vandals didn't tear the flier off. At the end of the month, Knock Out would return and do that for himself, replacing that flier with a new one detailing the grand opening of the Drive-In! Perhaps he should pop by the Sanctuary and do a little bit of 'advertisement'...with a thoughtful hum to himself, Knock Out came to a stop before the board and looking over the attached paper.

Hmm...no more takers, it looked like. Knock Out was pretty satisfied with the batch of workers he had brewing so far, though! Finding himself rather curious about what else may be up on there, his optics roamed to search the papers other then his own flier. A request for a running buddy? Interesting, but not exactly his preferred method of travel...ah! Now what was this? Knock Out leaned forward with interest, optics narrowing. A challenge for a race? How interesting! Whoever had printed this looked to have used a fax or some other ancient Earthly computer. The mech's crimson optics surveyed the detailed map. Definitely a scenic little route for a race...would keep things interesting. Hmm...it really had been a while since Knock Out had been in a good race. He was so caught up in fixing up the Drive-In, he hadn't really went out and done very much! The preparations left to do were very small in number, surely the plot of land wouldn't blow up if he went out for a race in a couple of days...right?

Uncapping a pen, he printed out his name with bold, broad strokes. Looks like he had been the first to sign up, too! Whoever could this challenger be...? Could this be a trap to lure morons out of the city for a race? "Tsk..." The mech waved a hand. If it was an elaborate trap, he'd just tear the person to shreds. Otherwise, he was going to this race! And who knew? Perhaps he'd see that other car there, and get to have a rematch? Knock Out gathered his bags and turned, leaving the board behind him. The challenge had been answered.

Business had been a bit slow, as of late. Truth be told, Livewire’s little taxi-cab service hadn’t really taken off very much since she first launched it. Maybe it was the flyer, maybe it was the fact that Livewire only put up one? Maybe, just maybe, Livewire had failed to account for the fact that most telephones couldn’t actually call her communication number.  But whatever it was, Livewire would check in every few days, when she was already down in the area, just to make sure the flyer was still there.

It took her a few moments after arriving at the Bulletin Board to find her flyer. A few things had been posted up on top of it, but Livewire didn’t much mind. She made enough with her service to cover supply money, and rent and food was free (for her, anyway). And-oh. Was that Knock Out’s signature?

The directed her attention to the strokes of ink that, indeed, did spell out “Knock Out”. What was that doing there? Her optics drifted upwards to the strange typing of the notice and Livewire quickly read through it. A race? In one day’s time, going out of the city? Violence encouraged?

Well, that just sounded like bundles of fun! Livewire hadn’t been in a race before, this would surely be exciting! Plus, it would be against Knock Out!  Who was admittedly faster, but also who Livewire knew for certain she could kick the can of. Oh, boy this would be fun! Probably!

There was a chance of fun, at least!

Without further ado, Livewire quickly retrieved a pen from her backpack and placed her name upon the next line down in yellow, glittery ink. The child had no shame.

Added to the registry, Livewire capped her pen and merrily skipped along. A race!  Against Knock Out and someone else! Oh, boy, this would be exciting!

While flying high above the corporate offices on his usual route from the shore to the grasslands, Arro veered from his path as was habit to tune a single eye towards the unremarkable speck that was the cities public announcement board. Rarely was anything interesting stapled there but on this day for once he wasn't disappointed.

His gaze crawled casually from one announcement to the next before suddenly stalling.

Arro read "Race", and that was about all that was needed to get him from eight-hundred feet to the ground in a flat second.

He hit the cobblestones at a gallop, days of sun-baked dust filled the public square with enough density to inhibit a sherpa.

    Did that really say race?!

Arro sniffed the announcement titles. The ink was heavy, smelling wet despite the days passed since it's posting, and there was no real name or hint of who had originally issued the challenge, not even a scent from hands on paper. Why the concern for secrecy, he almost wondered, but the message itself was too engrossing and an otherwise tantalizing mystery went discarded as insignificant. Once his initial excitement ebbed, Arro backed away from the board before knocking it over and scanned the document with keen eyes.

It all sounded tantalizing, pursuit with bite and skirmishing encouraged.

    Except...

    No flying vehicles...

Of course, who else could compete with him in the air? Obviously he wasn't a vehicle, however the meaning itself was clear. This was intended as a terrestrial event. Primarily for those on wheels... within striking distance.

    Friykt.

Arro's scaley shoulders rose and fell, at once determined and resolved, and he crossed down his abbreviated name with a reserved talon. The worst that could happen was his entrance be denied. If anything it still might be fun to follow events from above.

...I must be truly and thoroughly bored if just watching is enough for me to aspire to.

He exhaled his quiet disappointment and looked over the rest of the postings while he was down there, but nothing else could quite catch his interest after that initial spark. Finished, Arro turned on a dime and shot off into the sky, headed for open blue expanses. On his way pondering, if accepted, how he might hamper himself to make things fair to the gravity bound.

[I'm aware the race thread has begun, pm me if Arro's permitted or not, and if allowed he'll arrive belatedly]
