    "I'm ready..."

    And so you were.

There was a flash, and then... nothing. It was over within seconds, within the span of a single anxious breath. The ugliness of the world became drowned in fire and white, screams abating into blissful silence. The Space Pirates.. Ra-Moon... Portal-Alpha... all became undone in the blink of your eye. You tumbled in the endless void and felt insignificant to the powers that be. You tumbled and you tumbled and you tumbled, until...

    Thump!

Until your feet gently landed upon an invisible barrier, your body coming to a smooth rest. Nothing but black greeted you, your hands the only thing noticeable for an eternity. Where were you? Where had everything gone? Was this... the afterlife? If this was, then where was everyone? Something wasn't right. This couldn't be the end. Something wrong had happened, something - "Hnnngh..." Something stirred in the abyss. Panic overcame your senses as two gleaming eyes, milky-white and twinkling like opals, stared back at you from the unfathomable gloom. Metal rattled against metal, bone against bone... It drew closer and closer, and just when it seemed upon you, its foul breath roiling over your defenseless shoulders, whatever foul instruments of terror poised to strike...!

    CRACK!

Oblivion became torn asunder. A mighty gale roared past your ears, darkness swirling into a violent maelstrom before you. It crackled and surged, rumbling like thunder... threatening to consume you whole. And yet nothing of the sort befell you. The churning vortex inwardly devoured itself and began to take shape, undulating from an amorphous black cloud and into a figure you had grown accustomed to. Before you stood the creature, towering and menacing against the endless sea of white. No more were you plagued by suffocating darkness. It stared at you, transfixed, from within the dying squall, thinking... analyzing... judging. But if you thought to reach out and touch it... "SCREEEE!" It reared upward like the majestic beast it was and screamed, the empty air split by its harrowing cry. Shadowy wings unfurled and boomed, and then it simply turned into... dust. Like fine particles of sand tossed madly within a storm, the creature disintegrated into rolling wisps. Each new step forward saw its boundless form reduced into a writhing mass of darkness, each new step forward transformed wings into arms, muscular thighs into legs, its great monstrous hide... into the wavy silhouette of a heavy, trailing mantle. But never once did its otherworldly eyes stop gleaming, stop staring, stop piercing. And as it approached, shrinking and taking more defining features with every inch crossed, a familiar sound echoed within your mind.

    Rattle...
    ...Rattle...
    ......Rattle.

It was the sound of heavy metal. It was the sound of both imprisonment and obligation. It was the sound... of chains, and at last the mistral found rest in the shape of a man. Stained black by unnatural shade, a decrepit hand beckoned for your approach, the chains tethering your wrists to his softly jingling. Metal creaked with a strained groan as something opened. Come, Kev-Mak-Tarr... Come and embrace the inevitability shared by all things.

Come, Kev-Mak-Tarr, and face your fears.

Though his eyes were clenched shut, and hidden against the dark body of the creature, the bright flash could till be seen through his lids, in the corners of his eyes. The light was extravagant, threatening to pierce right through his eyes. It was as though the nukes had opened up a void, the entire city was now silent. No more destruction, no more pain. No more suffering, no more enemies. The feeling of being curled up next to the shadowy beast faded away, and Kev found himself tumbling. His limbs sprawled, attempting to catch something--anything--and found nothing available. Merely a blur of white. Not even the sensation of tumbling over the side of a skyscraper. The alien might as well have been falling in a vacuum.

Kev heaved a shaky gasp as all at once, his feet found stability. His body swayed forward for a moment, but otherwise any of the momentum his tumbling had gathered melted away into a prone standstill. Disoriented, his hands outstretched in front of him as Kev took in his new surroundings. Whatever he was standing upon didn't...seem to be physically there. A foot tapped the ground, feeling that something was there. However, there was not much that the alien could see beyond the backs of his own palms. Where once there had been blinding white, now there was an inky darkness. The sudden contrast nearly gave him a headache! His spine locked up tight, trying to avoid leaning forward or back, lest he fall. Which way was up? Which way was down...? The better question, however, was where was this...? The last time Kev had seen the nukes drop, it had not...gone down like this. And the nightmare...it didn't end. So what was this...? Limbo, of some kind?

    "Hnnngh..."

The darkness suddenly came to life, something roiling within the shadows. Kev's eyes widened, heart beginning to thump as his muscles tensed. Two white circles appeared in the dark, shining like a pair of lamps and staring into Kev's own eyes. The alien blinked, head quirking to the side as he took a deep breath in to calm himself. Those eyes...could it be...? It approached, drawing closer and seemingly dragging metal behind it as it came. Warm breath heaved and panted over Kev's scales, eyes squinting at the smell of it. Even as it seemed ready to strike, perhaps to dine upon the alien, Kev's panic was lessening rather than increasing. He was instead curious. Confused. With everything that Kev had been through, Kev felt no fear when he looked at the darkness.

    CRACK!

Both arms came to shield the scaly alien's head as the blackness began to roil and spin like a tornado, beginning to take a shape. Wind whipped past him like the clap of great wings, and Kev peeked beneath his palm to gaze at the cloud of black that seemed to be struggling and writhing. The force of wind coming from the vortex rocked against his body, loud thunder sounding from it. It threatened to send Kev crashing to his knees...and yet the alien remained steady. The darkness began to sink into itself, compacting to form a more familiar shape, a large one tipped with a beak and with large wings. Now that the darkness had been contained, he could now see the white void again. Kev glanced over the void briefly before turning back to the black beast. He stared down his beak back down at the alien, gaze intense. Kev tilted his head and stared back, similarly transfixed. It felt as though the beast were peering down into his soul. What were you looking for, bird? Relieved to find the creature was alive, a hand reached out only for the beast to rear up, pulling out of reach. The beast cried out, a loud scream that echoed in Kev's skull. Two wings reached up and away, clapping and booming like a hurricane before it began to...disintegrate. The wings dissolved into dust, and the rest of the body followed. Black dust and sand that roiled and swirled around something in the center, and the dust smoothed itself out like clay being rightfully formed. The two blinding eyes kept consistent all the way, still staring into Kev's soul even as the body attached to those eyes was only forming, still incomplete.

Every step forward found the form still smoothing itself out and becoming more defined. Smaller. A rattling of metal links sounded in the void, echoing around the alien. The rattling was like the ticking of a clock, ticking down to something...but to what? At least, the shadowy beast was no more, no longer a great beaked creature covered in chains. Now, before Kev stood a man, and the source of the rattling was revealed. For the man carried chains upon his person, and the chains were attached to Kev's wrists with a pair of shackles. The alien glanced down to the metal, an itch in the back of his mind as he realized who stood before him. Kev faced forward, and once beckoned by the frail black hand...Kev approached. Metal hinges squeaked and Kev's chains jingled, though the alien continued forward with his head held high. He continued, until he was directly in front of the man. His eyes raised up to look where a helm should be. The helm had been open, the grate like an inviting doorway. Kev stood on his tiptoes to get a better look, peering within the metal helm...

Inside of the helm, Kev could see a few lingering shadows that claimed the corners and recesses of the metal as their home, writhing within them like worms. His eyes peered around, tracing every inch of the inside of the helm, from metal wall to metal wall. Aside from those shadowy tendrils there was...nothing.

    Nothing, Kev-Mak-Tarr? Are you certain?

But you were. You were more certain than ever, and upon sharing this fateful revelation with you... the cause of your continuous nightmares, the cause of your growth and pain... rumbled his verdict at last. A resonating voice boomed within your ears, Congratulationsss, Kev-Mak-Tarr. You have passssed the final tessst. And so it was decreed, the exam finished at last! The world slipped away into darkness and a great haze overcame your thoughts. Where once you had been facing your instructor and listening to his judgement, now you awoke... in bed. Your weary eyelids fluttered at the thought as fingers brushed against soft linens. Sunlight gently filtered its way through the bedroom window, the morning songbirds tweeting with cheerful melodies and excited wings, and for once in all these three stressful months you felt alive. This was surely the most rested you've ever been for quite some time!

You happily threw a cover overhead and proceeded to nestle, burrowing deeper to conserve warmth. Oh how tempting it was to sink beneath the sheets and just become one with them. But wait, Kev-Mak-Tarr! If the sun was shining and the birds were singing, didn't that mean you were... late?

(Don't Fear) the Reaper: after three months of training and coming to terms with his mortality, Kev-Mak-Tarr is now immune to the Face of Fear! Just... don't abuse this privilege, alright? You'll get a swift kick to your bottom if you do.
