So... Operation: Find the Portals hadn't been going as well as Sonic had thought it would.

In his defense, it wasn't like he hadn't been trying. In the weeks that had passed since his arrival on the Breach, the blue hedgehog had been almost constantly exploring his new surroundings, only stopping to eat and rest when needed. This, for him, was normal. He was an adventurer at heart, and on an average day, being on a completely new planet--heck, a completely new dimension--would have been thrilling. There was no trail or mountain he ever wanted to leave unexplored, it was who he was at his core. Under normal circumstances, the awesome diversity of the Breach should have left him feeling like a really hyperactive kid in a candy store.

    Instead, he felt trapped.

He was, if he was being totally honest with himself. He hadn't exactly come here willingly, never asked to be yanked from all his friends and his hero-ly antics, but here he was, and it was driving him a little bit cuckoo. All of his days and most of his nights were spent dashing over as much ground he could possibly cover. He had already been all over Portal City, searching desperately for a sign that what he had been told by Olabisi and Portal-X was wrong, and came up short every time. Heck, he'd even resorted to asking a few of the locals what had happened to him, and when he finally managed to get a few of them to talk, their answers had all been the same: his world was gone, and unless one of his friends happened to show up here, there was no chance of him ever seeing them or his home again.

The hedgehog had been bound and determined not to accept it, at first. Living a life of denial wasn't something he was cool with just on principal, but when you've lost everything, pretty much anything goes, right? Besides, he was Sonic! Sonic the hedgehog, and if anyone could figure their way out of a situation like this, he was sure it was him. Even if he had spent an entire month darting all over the Breach, finding nothing but pretty scenery and some... admittedly colorful locals. He didn't even know what day it was anymore. Why bother keeping track of time when he was sure he'd be home soon anyway? He was going to worry about the important things here, thank you very much.

Still, over the course of the past couple of days, despite not wanting to admit it, he was getting desperate. Worse than that even, he was getting scared. Not only because finding his way back home looked bleak, for the moment, but because he had made yet another unwelcome discovery in his travels. While his speed seemed about as good as it had ever been, it definitely wasn't the only ability he had, and one particularly adventurous run was all it took for him to discover that something was seriously wrong.

He didn't have his powers anymore.

Nothing. No homing attacks, no spin dashes... even wall jumping seemed beyond him here. These were moves that were second nature to the hedgehog, techniques he'd refining since he was a kid. Now, no matter how spectacularly hard he tried, there was just... nothing. Zip. Everything he did ended with him landing flat on his face, like he was trying to break the sound barrier for the first time all over again. It was basically the worst, and only served to fuel his panic even more, but hey, there was a silver lining to any situation--now he had something new to obsess over and take his mind off of that other thing he was obsessing over! Logic = sound!

Which led him to now. It was a quiet, snowy afternoon in Kindle Forest, and Sonic currently had himself planted in front of one of it's many trees, eyes narrow in concentration. He was leaning in what was a typical runners pose, back curled and most of his body weight pressed into his hands as he instigated what was becoming a very long stare-off with a tree a couple of yards away. This is it, Big Blue. he thought, every muscle in his body prepared for what he was about to do next. You got this.

Suddenly rocketing forward, the hedgehog sprinted, leaving a trail of snow in his wake. Once he was about halfway there, he curled under himself, forming a ball and doing his best to force himself into a spindash. This worked for a total of two seconds, when he suddenly felt himself uncoil with a jolt, hitting the ground hard and tumbling like a ragdoll before hitting the tree upside-down. Letting out a pained grunt, he looked up, only to immediately regret this when the tree rained down mounds of fresh snow, burying him--all but his legs, of course, which were now sticking out like a pair of fresh spring dandelions.

    "...Owww."

Post by Zelda/Sheik on Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:05 am

For Zelda and the rest of her Hyrulean family, the new year had been off to a good start so far. From general holiday fun around the inn with Tetra, Link, Link, and Impa to some of the snowy adventures that they had got to share outside, things had been rather nice thus far, and she hoped that they carried on that way through the coming months. The four kids were all set to keep up with their training and quests as they continued to grow up (slowed down that that process had been), and by the same token, they were determined to make each day the best that they could.

That was part of what found the disguised princess out in the Kindle Forest on this wintry afternoon. Whilst she usually liked to explore the forest with the company of at least one of her closest friends, Sheik was by no means opposed to venturing out to the forest on her own. Today in particular, she was returning to the city after having gone to check on the Shadow Temple and join Aicara for some afternoon tea. It had been nice to catch up with her friend, and even with as cold as the weather was, the disguised princess was still enjoying her trek through the woods. She had trudged through the crunchy snow that had blanketed the area, but after a good while, she decided to enjoy another viewpoint in the forest whilst practicing some of her Sheikah training. With a practiced leap, Sheik soon appeared in the branches of the trees above, and as soon as she had her footing steady, she began to jump from branch to branch as she traversed the forest.

The disguised princess' maneuverability was still very sharp even with the thick winter cloak and longer, warmer trousers she was favoring today. She did have a pretty respectable cold tolerance, but given the fact that she had planned to be outside for a good while, she had opted to bundle up to make her short adventure even more cozy in its own way. The bandages that she wore atop her head and the collar of her tunic served to keep her head and face warm, and although she was a bit more covered than usual, her outfit was still definitively Sheikah in style. For some garments, the Hyruleans had managed to take advantage of modern fabric technology whilst keeping their traditional appearance, and for each piece, they had been immensely grateful for that. Sheik's outfit today was one such case, and as she leapt from branch to branch, it was certainly serving her well.

Save some of the expected fauna, it soon became apparent that she was not alone in the forest. The unexpected company was not being particularly loud, but between her own sharp instincts and the sudden appearance of someone who was quite blue on the edge of a nearby clearing, the disguised princess soon paused her own treetop trek as she looked to this hedgehog, wondering just what in the world he was up to. Had he just been standing or walking, she might not have been as perplexed, but he appeared to be taking racing stance, as though he was set to sprint headlong towards one of the trees in front of him.

Now that was definitely curious… a few second later, he did in fact burst forward with impressive speed. That alone caused Sheik to raise her eyebrows, and it was all she could do to suppress a surprised gasp when he curled forward into a ball. He was… trying to roll towards the tree? That speed was incredible, even in that position! Unfortunately, it appeared that the hedgehog's spinning form was not able to hold for longer than a couple of seconds, but he did not stop on the spot. Instead, his forward momentum carried him right into the base of the tree, causing her to wince in sympathy. If that wasn't enough, he had hit the tree with enough force to cause the snow that had gathered in its branches to drop right down on top of him, burying most of his form.

Sheik could tell that it would take a lot more than a high speed collision with a tree to take this hedgehog down, but all the same, that had to have hurt. She might not have known this person yet, but at the very least, he seemed benign enough, and as fate would have it, she was here to lend him assistance if he needed any. Glancing about the surrounding area to make sure that it was clear, the disguised princess soon hopped down from the tree had had been in, quietly stepping towards the mostly buried hedgehog.

Looking over the pile of snow that covered him, Sheik tried to better assess his condition before she asked, "Hey… are you all right?"

Sonic, both mentally and physically, was decidedly not okay at the moment. Busting up robots on an almost daily basis was one thing--with enough force and precision, he was usually able to tear through metal not unlike a bullet, taking little to no damage unless he screwed up--but this was different. Here, he had no trouble building up speed and going as fast as he ever had, it was the ability to be precise he just couldn't get right, no matter how hard he tried or what he was aiming at.  In reality, he'd been hurling himself at trees for the better part of an hour now, and his frustration at just not being able to get it right was finally starting to come through in his actions, making this collision in particular really sting. He'd probably be seeing stars if he could see anything at the moment. Or breathe.

Well, this is how it ends for me. he thought sarcastically. Guess it's been a good run.

His hearing, however, was fairing a little better. Muffled as it was, Sonic could just make out a voice addressing him nearby, although his only indication that he had been startled was a slight jump. There was someone else all the way out here in the forest? But why? As far as he could see, the place was virtually abandoned... possibly for good reason. He wasn't too worried about himself, should he encounter trouble, but he'd been hoping the place was remote enough that he wouldn't get anyone bothering him. Just his luck these days.

Fortunately for him, this person sounded innocous enough, if their inquiring into his well being had anything to say about it. Unfortunately for the voice, Sonic was already feeling more than a little crabby to begin with, and dashing headfirst into a tree hadn't done anything to help matters. "Uuugh, what does it look like?" he groaned from under the snow, sounding more dazed than threatening. For the first time since he got stuck here, he found himself glad none of his friends were here to see this. Popping a hand out from under the snow, he waved it feebly in the voice's direction, deciding he'd let this person at least get him rightside-up again if nothing else. "Help?"

Although the disguised princess fully realized that the hedgehog's pride had likely been far more injured than he himself had been from that unfortunate tumble, she still felt it best to check on him. Between Sheik's own stealthy nature, the hedgehog's previous focus on his dash towards the tree, and the way that he was all but entirely buried under the snowfall now, she was not at all surprised that he jumped slightly at hearing her voice, but thankfully, he did not appear to be too startled by her appearance. She had tried to give him enough time to settle around her own preliminary checking over his status even from where he was mostly covered, and from the sound of things, he had thankfully not lost consciousness.

At catching the dazed reply from the hedgehog, Sheik could not help but smile a little sympathetically. Her brows quirking up slightly as she thought of how best to respond, she soon took another step forward before stating, "It looks as though you took a fierce tumble and that you might need a moment, but it doesn't appear to have been nearly as bad as it could have been." Granted, she would be better able to see if he was truly all right once he was out of the snow, but at the very least, he soon gave her another indication that he was mostly all right. Blinking as one of his gloved hands managed to poke its way out from underneath the snow, Sheik's smile softened at his request for help.

Resisting the urge to openly muse on anything else in response to his first question, Sheik nodded at his second, noting, "Sure. Just one moment." At that, she moved to grip his outstretched hand with both of hers, and with a deft pull that her otherwise lithe frame belied, she managed to carefully haul the hedgehog out from his snowy prison. Now that he was free from it, Sheik was able to see that he was in fact just fine if not a bit dazed and contending with some lingering annoyance, his overall wellbeing something that she was inwardly grateful for.

Releasing his hand and continuing to look him over from where she stood, Sheik nodded and stated, "There you go."

Had he not currently been buried under 3 feet of snow, Sonic would have quirked an eyebrow at the stranger's response to his question. "Ha ha, very funny." he retorted, fingers drooping expressively. Alright, so he probably kind of deserved that. At least whoever this person was, they were nice enough not to just abandon him because of his bad mood--though, he probably would have been a little more appreciative if he wasn't on the verge of suffocation at the moment.

Thankfully, the stranger seemed more than happy to help, and Sonic felt himself being pulled upright, grunting a little along the way. Once on his feet, he wobbled a little, but otherwise felt no worse for wear, save for the random clumps of snow that still clung stubbornly to his quills. Ech, he'd just had to choose a forest of all places to throw himself around in, hadn't he? At the peak of January, none the less. Grimancing a little as he felt the snow melting, he shook his head like a dog, creating his own mini flurry in the process. "Geez, some tree I picked, huh?" he snorted, bopping the side of his head to clean out an ear. "I swear, that one had like, 70% more snow on it than the rest of 'em."

Now that he was dry and snow-free, he took in the sight of his most recent savior, slightly surprised to note that he looked like a young, human boy. At least, he thought he was human, although Sonic would freely admit he didn't  know what exactly qualified as human here. The boy was humanoid, that much was true, but there was something about him that just seemed... a little bit different. Not a bad different, of course, just... different. Maybe it was the bandages that covered most of his face and head, obscuring all but his eyes and a few tufts of hair. Or maybe it was his clothes, which looked stylistically ancient to him. Not that he was some kind of fashion expert, oho, far from it, but the symbols his top was embroidered with looked both important and completely alien to him. He knew for sure he had never seen that back at home.

Or it could be the one, simple fact that in all his life, Sonic had never seen a human with red eyes before. That could be it too.

Still, human or not, the kid seemed pretty friendly, and had been nice enough to take time out of his day to help a total stranger out of what was, if he was being completely honest, a really embarrassing situation. At the moment, Sonic couldn't say he was in the mood to chat with, well, anyone really (shock, horror!), but he already respected the boy just for that, and he deserved some form of recognition. "Hey man, thanks for helping me out there. I appreciate it." he said, giving him a little nod. "What's your name?"

Unable to suppress a smile at the hedgehog’s response to her observant quip, Sheik felt a little more relieved that he was at least in such a state to not forego all lightheartedness. He still sounded as though he was not in the best of moods regardless of his embarrassing tumble, but at the very least, he was in fact all right. One she had extricated him from the pile of snow, that was further proven as she was better able to assess his condition. Between her quick looking him over as well as her finely tuned senses, she soon confirmed that save the snow that was not letting him be just yet, he was just fine.

Sheik was unsurprised to see his resilience in action here, especially with the way he had been poised to charge at the tree in the first place, and he was quick to further accent that fact with the rapid shaking of his head to clear the lingering snow. The disguised princess was thankfully clear of its trajectory, and she soon smiled a bit more at his joke regarding the tree he had selected as his target. Laughing softly at his secondary note, she stated, “It very well might have. I’m surprised its branches were even able to hold that much.” Granted, it still wouldn’t take too much snow to bury someone of the hedgehog’s stature, but it had been an impressive pile of snow nonetheless.

As the two took a better chance to get a look at each other, Sheik soon confirmed that the hedgehog at the very least seemed to be close to her own age (whether he actually was chronologically or not was an entirely different matter), although he was roughly a foot shorter than her. She was not an expert on hedgehogs, much less blue, bipedal, talking ones, but something about him just exuded that sense.

Returning the hedgehog’s nod with one of her own, Sheik stated, “Of course. I’m just glad I happened to be in the area.” Unless if circumstances were dire enough to prevent such actions, the disguised princess was not one to simply stand by and let someone in need of aid go unassisted. Even if she could only do something from the side or the shadows as she had during her year in hiding, she was still determined to do whatever she could to help those in need. It was simply her way.

At the hedgehog’s question regarding her name, she smiled a bit more before adding, “Sheik. And might I ask yours?”

"Heh, no kidding, right?" Sonic snorted in response to Sheik's observation, admittedly trying to cover up any residual embarrassment more than anything else, because. Come on. Really. "Guess I should've expected it, honestly. I mean, have you ever really taken a look at these things? They're huge!" And yes, he was aware of his stature compared to most everyone else here, thankyouverymuch. The things were still huge. In fact, it had been their size that had made him choose them for target practice in the first place--harder to miss, much harder to break.

Yeah, nice move on that one, genius. I'm sure Tails would've been proud.

Flinching at the thought of his younger brother, Sonic decided it would probably to keep thoughts of his missing friendship circle out of his head for now and focus on the matter at hand. Seeing the kid's amiability over the matter helped him relax a little, and he was glad his bad mood didn't seem to show--or if it did, the boy just didn't care. He wasn't a huge fan on putting his innermost feelings out there for the world to see, primarily because he just wasn't a touchy feely guy, but this situation in particular was making him feel even more guarded than usual. Since finding out about... everything, after his arrival on the Breach, he hadn't really spoken to anyone, which wasn't unusual, but this was the first time he'd ever avoided people voluntarily. Had he been in a better frame of mind, this might have worried him. As it was, he was just pleased that the first person he'd run into since the Portal X and Olabisi incident seemed nice and helpful.

And now he finally had something to call him! "Sheik, huh? That's a pretty cool name." He mused, rolling it over in his brain. It sounded mysterious. Like a ninja or something. "I'm Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog. It's nice to meet'cha." And if that little introduction had been delivered without it's usual pomp and flair, he certainly wasn't going to think too hard about it. Besides, it was hard to look cool in front of someone after they'd just rescued you from a snowy grave.

Speaking of which... "Hey, what brings you all the way out here, anyway?" Sonic asked, rubbing his nose almost sheepishly. "Not that I'm not glad you were here to help, but I kinda thought I would be alone given the... y'know. Weather."

Sheik could not help but grin at the hedgehog’s response and subsequent quip regarding all of the trees in the vicinity. Whether he was trying to use humor to cover up any lingering feelings of embarrassment or not, she did appreciate the sentiments and certainly felt that they were a good sign for him. Nodding a bit, she looked to her current company before noting, “That they are. This forest has a lot of trees of different sizes, but some of them are downright enormous.” She had yet to find anything out here the size of the Great Deku Tree, but there were definitely some respectable contenders in the Kindle Forest.

Whilst Sheik could tell that the blue hedgehog was not in the best of moods, she could also see that he was trying not to make it too obvious. More than that, whilst she was certainly concerned for him, she was not about to press him over his mental state. She did not care that he was in less than good mood so much as she cared that he was and would be all right, and as their exchange headed towards introductions, some of the bristly tension appeared to be softening. She did realize that and was grateful for it, but again, it was something that she kept only as a silent observation.

Smiling as the hedgehog commented on her other name, Sheik could not help but add, “Thanks. It’s a little traditional but… I like it.” And she really did. Speaking of names, now she had one to use for her new companion, and she nodded at both his mention of his name and his greeting. “You’ve got a neat name yourself. It’s nice to meet you as well.” Their introductions might have been pretty casual, but they were no less meaningful. Sometimes the things were special around their own simplicity.

Blinking at Sonic’s question, Sheik’s smile soon grew a bit at his added note of clarity. She supposed that he did have a point given the weather and possibly even the distance of the forest, but for a young Hylian that loved adventuring, heading out into the woods in any weather was perfectly normal. Glancing about their surroundings before looking back to Sonic, Sheik stated, “Honestly, I just like getting to visit the forest no matter what the weather is. As for why I’m out here today though, I’d gone to check on something for my guardian, and enjoy some tea with a friend of mine who lives just past here.”

Pausing for a few moments, Sheik soon added, “I could ask the same of you, considering that we both set out here alone.” Admittedly, she’d had a feeling that he was out here doing some training or the like given the way that he had spun right into a tree, but he did not need to know just how long she had been aware of his presence before they had met.

Okay, well, never let it be said that appealing to his ego wouldn't brighten him up at least a little bit. Puffing his chest out ever so slightly at Sheik's compliment, Sonic flashed what was probably his most genuine smile of this encounter so far, although it remained muted compared to what it usually was. "Heh, it is a pretty cool name, isn't it? I think it suits me." he concurred, allowing himself to preen a little. "But hey, traditional or not, yours is still cool too! Makes you sound kind of ninja-y." A beat, and then he cracked one of his previously closed eyes open, suddenly realizing that may not exactly be the most polite way to address someone from what seemed to be a very different culture. "Which, uhh, you might be, actually, judging from your clothes. Sorry. Hope I didn't offend ya there."

With introductions out of the way, Sonic felt like he could finally relax, despite not being in the chattiest of moods. He wasn't bad at small talk--heck, you really couldn't be when people had a tendency to recognize you where ever you went--and he found himself liking this kid so far. This was only further confirmed when Sheik explained why he was out here, causing his ears to perk up in interested. "Ahhh, a follow adventurer, huh? That's cool. Wandering around random places like this is practically all I do these days." And that was true even before he was ripped from his homeworld. "Gotta say though, some tea sounds pretty nice in this cold. Your friend must own a lot of it if they can stand living out here." Another good natured grin, although secretly, he could kind of understand the appeal. He just couldn't imagine dealing with snow and wet a good chunk of the year.

Soon, the topic of conversation was turned around on him, causing a slight change of mood, despite his decent attempt at staying casual. "Who, me?" he remarked, folding his arms with just a touch of aloofness. "Nahhh, nothing as nice as a tea outing with a friend, I can tell you that much." Despite never having met this kid, he prevent himself from feeling a twinge of shame every time he thought about admitting his powers were gone, even if no one here knew he'd had them in the first place. It was stupid, really stupid, but he was feeling a little more lost than he cared to admit right now, and he wasn't sure he was ready to admit that to someone he barely knew.

Pausing for a moment, he went on, hoping he could somehow convey this without actually mentioning it. "I just, y'know. Thought I'd do some training. It's kind of hard to find places this remote near the city, especially when you're new here."

“That it does,” mused Sheik, just before grinning at Sonic’s compliment. The disguised princess was glad that he liked the name of her alternate identity, especially considering Ciela’s old reactions when the Spirit of Courage had first heard her name as well as when she herself admitted that it was not her true name. It might have been the name of one side of herself, but it was not the first name she held much less went by. She did not mind the fairy’s reaction, rather finding it to be amusing regardless of her personality, but this response did make her feel good. However, around that she soon found herself curious as the hedgehog opened one eye. Whilst she had taken his words to be positive ones, it seemed that he did want to be extra careful in just what he said here. Brash as he might have been, this alone proved that he was not thoughtless.

Chuckling softly, Sheik stated, “No, you didn’t offend me at all. I might not be a ninja outright, but you are not the first person to compare me to one.” Pausing for a moment as her smile grew a touch, she soon added, “From what I have learned about ninjas, my people the Sheikah are not entirely unlike them. Our culture, history, and certain skills are of course different, but there are plenty of similarities and parallels. … I’m glad you think I seem like one.”

As Sonic was soon pleased over the discovery that they were both adventurers, Sheik noted, “You could certainly say that. I do hope that you’ve had some good ones here… there is certainly a lot to explore.” Her smile took on an amused look as he remarked about the tea, and she soon added, “That she does, and my friends and I own a lot at home. Maybe you could get a cup soon.” And that counted whether he wound up getting one on his own or eventually joining her for one. A cup of tea was always nice.

Nodding in understanding as Sonic stated that he wasn’t really doing much out in the forest, it seemed that the blue hedgehog was not entirely sure of how to answer her. That alone was rather curious, for although the disguised princess did not expect him to necessarily divulge everything to her, he seemed like the type that was unafraid to note simple details. Regardless of the reason for his brief pause though, Sheik remained steady, and she smiled a little as he not only confirmed that he’d hoped to do some training, but also that he was in fact new to this world.

“Ah, I see,” said Sheik, nodding slightly. “There is actually a full training center in a stadium there, but I personally prefer training outside whenever I can. The forest and grasslands are two of my favorite spots to train, actually. … You might be new, but I’m glad you’ve found this at least. For what it’s worth though… welcome.”

"Okay, phew. I was worried I was maybe violating some cultural no-no there." Sonic huffed, feigning wiping sweat off his brow. He was teasing, mostly, although he certainly didn't want to be on bad terms with anyone if he could help it. It wouldn't exactly keep him up at night if he was, but when you were new to a place like this, it was handy to have all the allies you could get. "And yeah man, ninjas are cool! It was totally meant to be a compliment. I actually sort of know one myself, although he's not one for talking." Granted, Espio didn't seem much for anything besides his work, as far as he could see. How a guy like that wound up involved with the Chaotix he'd never know. Shaking himself out of thoughts of home, he gave Sheik a light hearted wink before getting back to the subject at hand. "Ehh, anyway, you'll have to tell me more about these Sheikah sometime. Sounds pretty interesting."

Of course, getting back on topic didn't mean he was off the hook completely when it came to more... uncomfortable matters. "Yyyyeah, you could say that..." Sonic muttered, scratching the back of his head in the hopes that it would hide any cringe. "I haven't really... been here long enough to enjoy the sights. Y'know how it is." Or maybe he didn't. Everyone else he'd met had seemed content enough to be stuck in this place. "Heh, might have to take you up on that offer at some point though. I haven't had a hot drink in... Chaos knows how long. Might help loosen these joints of mine."

Okay, if he was being honest, Sonic hadn't had a good meal in Chaos knows how long, but... well, he wasn't about to let Sheik in on that.

To the kid's credit, if he had caught on that he wasn't being entirely straight with him, he wasn't letting it show. Which was just fine by him. If there was one thing Sonic didn't want right now, it was pity, and he appreciated that Sheik seemed content to keep the conversation light. At the mention of a stadium, Sonic cocked an ear, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure I've heard of that stadium. Can't remember where, but I've heard of it. Sounds like people like us are way too cool to practice inside though." he said, giving Sheik a conspiratorial grin. "To be honest, I kind of wanted something more secluded like this. Less distraction, you know?" Not that it had really helped him any, but at least this way there had only been one witness to him screwing up. "And hey, thanks for the welcome. I appreciate it."

Pausing, the hedgehog took in their surroundings, in particular the amount of light peering in through the branches of the trees. The two of them hadn't been talking very long, but if his hunch was correct, it was probably getting pretty late... he doubted Sheik wanted to hang out here in the dark. Honestly, he wasn't too keen on the idea himself, and he had been at it a while. Letting out a small sigh, he glanced back to his companion, crossing his arms for warmth. "Hey, were planning on heading back any time soon? I could walk with ya, if you'd like."

Sheik couldn’t help but laugh softly at Sonic’s lighthearted response, just before she grinned, adding in just as a spirited tone, “Not at all.” She did appreciate his sentiment, both the jest and deeper honesty behind it. As soon as he picked back up on the mention of ninjas, her smile only grew, especially as he noted that the comparison had been a compliment. She’d had a distinct feeling that it was, but it still made her feel special. It was interesting that he knew a ninja of sorts though… “Yeah? That’s still pretty neat, though.” Now the question was did this sort of ninja present as much of a ninja image as she did or not.

As Sonic came back around to the previous mention of the Sheikah, the disguised princess nodded, stating, “Of course not. I’d be honored to.” Whilst Sheik was not truly a Sheikah herself, she had long since been fascinated by the Shadow Folk. That stood well before her own disguise and training had come about, and whilst she certainly knew a Sheikah in her guardian, she did like learning as much as she could of the people. They were always very interesting to her, and to hear someone – especially someone unfamiliar with Hyrule – share even a fraction of that interest made her feel rather happy.

As the blue hedgehog scratched the back of his neck and glossed over his relatively newer status here, the disguised princess felt a bit guilty for even touching on the matter indirectly. Still, she nodded slightly, and smiled a bit more as he responded positively to her. “Maybe we can see about getting you some tea or hot chocolate soon.” No matter how resilient anyone was to the cold, a hot drink was always a good way to warm yourself to the core.

Sheik had most certainly caught on that the blue hedgehog was not being as forthcoming with her as he could have been, but regardless of the fact that he was newer to this world, she could fully understand and respect that. She did not let her perception affect the way that she presented herself much less the way she was set to address him, but even with what she was picking up here, she was glad that he was opening up, even if it was still a guarded effort. Still, they were able to converse pleasantly, and she was pleased when Sonic noted that he had at least heard of Olympic Stadium. More than that, she was as amused as she was glad with his mention of the two of them being ‘way too cool’ to practice there. Returning her companion’s grin with one of her own, she soon stated, “It sounds like it. Believe me, I can understand that. I have gone to the stadium a few times, but like I said, this is one of my favorite places to train.”

Smiling and nodding at Sonic’s sincere thanks, she soon perked up at his subsequent question and offer. Blinking as she thought over just how to respond, the disguised princess noted, “I was planning that, yes. I was starting to head back when I came across you, actually. It’s a simple trek back, but… the company would be nice.” Turning a bit and gesturing with her shoulder, Sheik added, “The city’s back this way.”

Gosh, a hot chocolate sounded amazing right about now. Sonic, in his many adventures, had become pretty resilient to most temperatures, but spending your time rolling around in the snow was bound to chill anyone to the bone. And he wasn't blessed with a thick fur coat like some anthros, as much as he was loathe to admit it. "Heh, no foolin'?" he chuckled, punctuating his next statement with finger guns. Subtlety, thy name was Sonic. "I'll hold you to that."

Privately, he felt pretty relieved that Sheik was avoiding any more comments on his arrival here, either not realizing or not letting it show that he knew he was hiding something. Casual conversation, small talk--this was his element. He had questions he wanted to ask, lots and lots of questions, but those could wait until he figured out a way to present them without going down a road he wasn't sure he was willing to face right now. "Yeah, there's nothin' quite like training outdoors... even if the weather's not exactly cooperating." As if to emphasis this, he shook, casing off a powder of snow that had accumulated on his head while they were talking. "Besides, walls aren't really my style. For obvious reasons."

With that out of the way, Sonic perked up when Sheik accepted his offer to accompanying him back to the city, finding himself glad to have the company. A whole month without much social contact could do that to a person, he supposed. "Hey, much obliged." he said, falling into step beside the boy as they set off. Truth be told, he could be anywhere he wanted to be in just a couple of minutes with his speed, but he was willing to buckle down and take a more leisurely pass for his companion's sake.

Besides, he couldn't imagine it would hurt to really take in the sights of the new world he found himself in, just this once. He hadn't done enough of that lately. Even if he wasn't yet convinced he would be here forever, what kind of adventurer would he if he didn't at least try?

A minute or two passed as the pair walked in silence before Sonic spoke up again, stretching his arms behind his head casually. "So, uhh, how long have you been here now?"

Whilst Sheik did not have the same extreme temperature resilience that her guardian did, she still had a decent cold tolerance, and that had only grown over the years. She would have likely been fine without the winter cloak and longer trousers she was wearing today, regardless of any possible use of heat magic, but since she had planned to be outside for a long while today, she had wanted to be extra prepared. Right now, she was rather grateful for that, although she was still looking forward to having another hot drink or few once she returned to the inn. Smiling a bit more broadly at Sonic’s amusing remark, Sheik simply nodded, noting, “Of course.”

Unable to suppress a soft chuckle at Sonic’s comment about the weather, Sheik soon dusted a bit of snow off the top of her bandages as the hedgehog shook his own snow off. As far as walls went, the disguised princess figured that he had a point, although she could still see him utilizing them skillfully if he needed to. “I can see that, although I’m sure you can make them work for you where you need to.” Such was the nature of those that were built for speed.

As Sonic perked up at her accepting his offer to head back to the city with her, Sheik found her own spirits boosted, and she nodded to her new companion as he thanked her. With that, the two were off, trudging through the thick snow as they made their way through the forest. The disguised princess could have picked up the pace as well, both with her own sprinting and strategic use of Sheikah Vanishes, but the same as Sonic, she too was set to keep things at a far more relaxed pace.

The two continued their trek in comfortable slice for a couple of minutes before Sonic saw a good chance to break it. Glancing to him at his question, Sheik thought for a moment before she replied, stating, “I’ve actually been here just over 3 years now. In some ways though, it feels like longer… but in a good sense.” Admittedly, a big part of that was because of the way that she, Tetra, Link, and Link had taken advantage of the flow of time in this world to slow down their own aging process and enjoy childhood for a bit longer. Even more than that, the time she had spent with her family here had felt like a longer time than it had actually been, simply given how comfortable and natural it was. “How about you?”

Ahhhh, Sheik brought up a good point. While Sonic greatly preferred training in wide open spaces, there was something to be said about the way the walls and buildings of a city forced you to come up with creative ways to move through them. Speed sometimes had to be sacrificed for athletics, and you really had to keep on your toes to make the environment work for your liking. And, you know, not cause millions of dollars in property damage while you were at it. He wasn't very good at that part.

"Heh, you're right on!" he chuckled, giving the boy a thumbs up. "I can actually do some pretty sick wall-jumps if I need to. Maybe I can show you sometime, once we're back in the city."

Once the two of them started the walk back into town, Sonic quietly took in Sheik's answer to his question, although the exact length of time he'd been here made his ears swivel forward in surprise. "Dang, three years? No fooling?" And he thought he had it rough. He knew others had been trapped here for varying periods of time, but the thought of living in--what in his head--basically amounted to a prison for three years was enough to make his heart race. Even weirder, the kid actually seemed completely okay with this, unless he was hearing it wrong. Was this... normal, for this place? Did people just get sucked away from their lives and families and decide to live with it?

Then again, maybe Sheik was from the sort of world you wouldn't want to go back to.

Realizing he was being spoken to, the hedgehog jolted, turning and blinking owlishly at his companion. "Oh, uhh, like a month, I think? Kinda lost track of time. I know Christmas has passed, so it must be at least that." He felt a slight pang at the mention of the holiday, but quickly buried it down with everything else. "Obviously not as impressive as your record, though. You, ahhh... do you really like it here?"
