    Something on the wind...

Grodus wasn't entirely sure why he felt like venturing out this direction, other than a vague desire to get some combat practice in. There was also a subtle tug upon his magic from the world's leylines. Sometimes he could easily ignore that sort of thing, but this felt like it might be important...

And so it was, he followed the pull on his magic the whole way out to the coastline. The origin point of whatever it was actually seemed to be out on the ocean, but it wasn't strong enough to have him seeking a way to cross it. Just being nearby looked to be enough.

The technomage found himself on a particularly rocky stretch of coastline, and once he found a spot clear enough for his liking, he started to practice his spellwork. Fire, ice, and of course lightning all danced across that beach at varying times. When that got boring he began to use his staff and call his summons as well, lashing out at an imaginary opponent in front of him.

So caught up in this mock battle he was, Grodus almost didn't catch the first fluttering of something powerful emerging somewhere across the waves. The only other warning he had was a faint tremor along the leylines, but after that it was far too late to do anything...

Suddenly there was a great surge of magic in the distance, powerful enough to make his Xs immediately glitch and fade away. His own systems began to sputter as well, first bringing the technomage to his knees, though ultimately he ended up on his side on the ground, futilely trying to curl up to shield himself.

((gonna post again later, this is to get him off the sweep...))

Every technique Grodus knew to guard himself from foreign magic ended up failing, leaving him to endure the torrent of power flowing through the world totally unaided. His sensors quickly grew overwhelmed, some of them starting to shut down to avoid burning out. Soon enough the only things he was aware of were his own systems and that strange power blazing brightly in the distance, its intensity rivaling that of the heart of a star, though there certainly wasn't any visible light involved.

It seemed to go on forever, the technomage curling up even tighter on himself as the moments passed. Surely it had to end sometime, right? Nothing could keep up that sort of output for long, could it? Regardless of the answers to those questions, in the face of such power not even Grodus's formidable endurance could hold out. Panic started setting in, there was the urge to scream--

As abruptly as it started, the magic sweeping across the world vanished. The sudden lack of that blazing power was just as jarring to the mage as its appearance from nowhere was, his systems falling to chaos with nothing to defend against. In the strange 'silence' of the moment, he realized something . . . that power was familiar. The last time he felt it was... in the palace of the White Queen?

Consciousness fled as his systems finally crashed a few seconds later...

    ---

It took Grodus a good twenty minutes to come back online again, another ten to get his systems back in order after all that abuse. He hadn't moved far from where he'd fallen, only managing to sit upright on the rocky shore and stare out into the ocean waves. Truly, he was staring past them and at the island he could just barely see the outline of across the water, the origin point of where all that wild magic came from.

If his hunch was right, the White Queen-- no, Sonia, he remembered now-- had almost certainly reached to the latent power she had within and truly claimed it as her own. No longer would she be holding herself back, not if that earlier display was any indication.

There was a certain fierce pride within the sorcerer at that, and he did feel some happiness for her, but in the end his thoughts turned towards his own still meager power. Grodus glanced down to his staff where he had it balanced across his lap, at his gloved hands that held the weapon in place. As an artificial mage, could his true peak come anywhere near that wisp of a girl's? He was much stronger before being dragged to this accursed world, and while he was slowly working his way back to that point, even that could not compare to some of the others.

That pink-haired woman that was also grabbed for the ridiculousness in the forest was an actual goddess, for crying out loud! What was he compared to that, really?

He sat there, letting all these negative emotions roil through his processors, until he finally grew utterly disgusted with himself and stood back up. Grodus took the stance he was using earlier and called forth his power, again sending lightning dancing across that rocky beach. He didn't bother with flames or ice, just letting loose with the strongest electrical spells he had.

There was no point in sitting around and moping, that wouldn't get his strength back at all! The technomage called to his summons again, setting them to lash out at an imaginary opponent in front of him. He followed after them, his robes swirling in the wind as he struck at the air with his staff.

Grodus would still be on that beach for quite a while afterward, pushing himself as hard as he could. He might not be the strongest, but there was no real knowing that until he clawed his way back to the top and kept going...
