    Nighttime Solace

    BGM: This

Homura sat atop a building, her hair floating around in the wind. Dusk had long since been and gone, giving way to the dark and ever-encroaching night that came with the stars and the moon. Homura let her legs dangle off the side of the building - careless, but she full well knew she was in no danger, even if she fell. Such was true of a lot of people around the Breach, but she just happened to be one of them. She kept her eyes on the sky, looking up at the moon, hanging there in the night sky. The moon was beautiful, as many had likely sat on rooftops and thought before.

She only really had Kyoko left, and she didn't know how long it would be until Kyoko disappeared... but even thinking like that was rather pessimistic, as she had become accustomed to thinking. People on the Breach had been losing a lot of people for a good while, and she raised her hand as she thought of this, thin lines on the palm of her hand where the hourglass had been to indicate that she had had a contract with Archer in the past. She didn't know whether they would ever fade, but even if they wouldn't, she knew they had some power left in them. In the event that any other Servant were to arrive, she was the only one right now capable of taking them in. That didn't mean she was going to take in anyone, however, but she had learned of the Grail War now, anyway.

It was a lot to think about, and Homura looked up at the moon again. Who knew what would occur in a year's time?

Life on the Breach was not so bad, once you got used to it. Used to the weird sights, new places to see. Kyoko had always been pretty adaptable, so she didn't really find much issue in getting used to the place. Of course, actually having somewhere to live without worrying about getting caught, and the same for food...yeah, that definitely helped in getting used to the place. The real issue had been getting used to everything she'd learned from Homura. Some people say that there are some things that people just aren't meant to know. Kyoko was pretty sure that the future was one of those things, along with the circumstances of one's death. That had been probably the scariest thing to deal with...the fact that if she hadn't been transported here? If her world hadn't been destroyed? She would have died. In a manner she never figured she would have died, at that! It had been a little upsetting, at first. Eventually though, she let it go. After all, she was still alive! And if she could come here, before her death which Homura had seen happen, that had to mean that it was possible for Sayaka to come, before becoming a witch. It was possible for Madoka to arrive, before Homura's 'failure' to keep her from contracting with Kyubey.

However...it was nearing a year, since Kyoko had been here. A couple more months until a year, and Homura had been here longer then herself. And all that time...Kyoko had been the only magical girl to arrive. How long until Madoka came? Or Sayaka? Mami, even? Kyoko growled under her breath before she abruptly rose up from the couch, bag of chips momentarily discarded. "If I keep sitting in here, thinking about all this crap, I'm gonna go crazy! I need some fresh air..." Kyoko pulled her boots on, walking towards the front door to her room, though on her way back she reached down to scoop the bag of chips off of the couch and carry it securely in one hand. She waited until she had closed and locked the door behind herself before she reached her free hand down and scooped up several chips. She reached up, managing to fit the entire hand scoop of chips into her mouth before her teeth came down with a satisfying crunch. Out of the inn, she walked, and by the time she reached the business district the bag was empty, licked clean. Kyoko balled the bag up in her fist before chucking it into the garbage. Well, she got some fresh air and she finished her snack...what else was there to do? A flash of red, and the red head had changed into her magical girl attire. Might as well look for some witches! Using a fire escape, Kyoko climbed onto the roof of the nearest building and looked around, narrowing her eyes to find the nearest path to the outer district. The witches seemed to congregate there...though what was this? Across the way, she saw someone else on a roof. Someone with long flowing black hair. "Homura...?"

Didn't look like she was doing anything in particular. Kyoko stashed her spear away inside of her soul gem and charged ahead, leaping from rooftop to rooftop before landing next to Homura, with an unapologetic grin on her face. "Hey! Hope you don't mind me joining you, Homura." Now that she found the other magical girls, she wasn't gonna leave her alone easily. It was 'bother Homura' time! "Watcha doing out here anyway?" She ignored the fact that Homura could easily ask the same of her, tilting her head inquisitively instead.

Homura suddenly looked over to the side as Kyoko landed on her building, having leapt from a good distance away. When Kyoko initially asked her question, Homura shook her head. She didn't mind at all. In fact, it had been quite some time since she had had any company. The Puella Magi just looked back over the beautiful city, the lights all making the place a very beautiful view from the top of a building. It was almost magical in itself, the city's lights the way they were. It made way for a good place to sit and watch the night, though.

"Do you remember the symbol I had on my hand when you first arrived?" She abruptly questioned, suddenly turning to look at Kyoko once more. "It was the shape of an hourglass." Blinking, her expression was unchanging as she spoke, hiding her conflicting feelings about the subject. She didn't care all that much for Archer, but he'd been a good companion for her and had proven that he was on her side many times. She had been upset when he'd left, though not so upset that she couldn't get over him. "It was actually the mark of what is called a "Servant", but not in the literal sense. They're magical, and the Servant's name was Archer. He helped me fight Witches." She looked back over at the city. "He disappeared not long after you arrived, though the marks remain on my hand. I've been thinking about that."

The Puella Magi kept gazing out over the city, her gaze unflinching as she did so. "What are you doing out here?"

Kyoko smirked to herself at Homura's reaction. Heh, that was the closest she was ever going to get to catching Homura off guard! Even if she didn't leap out of her skin, the way she turned her head so suddenly was as if she had been surprised to see her. It was a welcome change from the dark haired girl turning her head stoically when she walked in. As if she already knew she was going to come or something. Homura shook her head, not minding the company. Kyoko's legs folded beneath her as she lowered herself to sit indian style on the roof with Homura, following her gaze out to the city. Definitely brighter then the stars, and the lights seemed varied in intensity, tone and even color. Kyoko had a fondness more for the cyan ones, eyes tracing the way they lit up the city. Dare she say it, these lights were more beautiful then stars.

The red head was jostled out of her admiration for the city lights, however, when Homura suddenly spoke. "Huh?" Symbol on her...oh! She meant the hourglass! Kyoko opened her mouth to answer, only for Homura herself to mention the shape. With a click of her teeth, Kyoko closed her mouth and gave Homura a dirty look. "Yeah, I remember." It was hard to forget. Though Kyoko had been here a while, the subject had just...never come up. It was only now that she was getting nitty gritty details about what that thing meant, though she wasn't upset or anything. It wasn't as important as learning what happened to Sayaka, this was Homura's personal business. "So...he was like a magical man?" And the use of the word servant made her imagine a man battling in an outfit reminiscent of their own magical girl outfits...but with a butler theme. Apparently this Archer fella had disappeared, yet the mark remained. "Disappear? Like...into thin air?" That was strange...Kyoko's gaze turned to the mentioned hand, gaze thoughtful.

"Maybe...it's like a scar? Something you can't just remove?" It was the best answer she had to give. The girl brought a hand up to scratch at her own scalp idly. At the question, Kyoko shrugged. "I was getting a little stir crazy in my room. Needed to get out...get some air. Maybe see if there was a Witch or two that needed some pounding."

"That's right." A magical man was more than a fitting description. He had been pretty cynical, and honestly he had attempted to instigate many a verbal battle with Homura, to be stonewalled by Homura's usual attitude. They had been getting there with actually warming up, but it was cut short before any long-term benefits could come from it. Homura would have him back if she could, however, because it was better to have someone that did understand how things were. All the same, she'd rather have Kyoko here. After all, Kyoko was much more familiar with Witches than Archer had been, and she'd known Kyoko for far longer than the red-shroud-wearing bowman.

"Like other residents of this world do. One day they're there, and the next they're just gone. But since the mark remained, I don't think he's dead. Either that, or the power of the mark doesn't vanish until it's properly used." Homura looked back down at the faded hourglass. As a a magical girl, she was able to feel the power actually flowing through, and it just seemed... dormant. "Archer claimed to come from something called the Holy Grail War, where Servants from legends in the past are summoned from summoning circles and fight for the ability to be granted... one single wish." It was kind-of similar, except you get the wish at the end, this way. Puella Magi got it first thing, and then had to fight. "I got it when he arrived. I wonder if it means I could keep another Servant in this world..." She put her hand down again, and looked back at Kyoko.

"Witches are more prevalent in the Outer District." Homura stood up, her intentions clear. She'd help Kyoko find and fight a Witch if the redhead wanted. Kyoko might have more been planning to fight alone, but Homura wasn't exactly doing much anyway.

    There's no "i" in team.

Well what do you know, a magical man. Kyoko Sakura had missed the chance to see a magical man for herself for the first time. A shame! A real shame, especially if he changed clothes like they did. It'd be hilarious if he wore frilly things like magical girls did! Though something told her that mentioning that right now to Homura would probably not be for the best, so she focused on what else Homura said.

...Such as the discovery that people apparently just...up and disappeared here. It sounded...well, unbelievable. People didn't just disappear. Even in their dimension, if someone seemed to disappear it was because they had been killed inside a Witch's labyrinth. Here, they could apparently just vanish one day. It should have been one of the most unbelievable things Kyoko had ever heard! ...And yet... "Tsk..." The redhead blew some air out of her cheeks and placed both of her palms upon her knees. "Well that explains what happened to that yellow horse. Guess she disappeared too..." Kyoko hadn't seen her since the first day she'd come here. Frankly, she'd been idly wondering what happened to the little horse, now she had an idea. She disappeared with Homura's magical man. At least for Homura, she almost certainly knew that Archer wasn't dead, or else the mark should have disappeared.

A bit of backstory was next, and Kyoko stared out at the city with a blank look in her red eyes. Something about a Holy Grail War, apparently Servants were summoned with specific circles and they all fought to be granted one wish. "...Huh. So he really is like a magical man." That was uncanny. "What do you think that'd be like, to fight for your wish?" Probably made you think twice about what you wished for, if you could have died just to get it in the first place. Kyoko followed Homura's gaze back to the marking on her hand, giving something of a blank shrug. "Maybe." Who knows. Guess they'd just have to keep an eye on that thing, and see.

Homura stood up suddenly, and it only took a second for Kyoko to stand as well, a full grin on her face. Indeed, the Witches appeared in the Outer District rather then the delicate innards of the city. Made their job easier, really. "Oh yeah? By all means, Homura Akemi, lead the way!" With a small shng, Kyoko reached into the soul gem on her chest and pulled out her lance. She twirled it in her palms before she stamped it on the ground, leaning on it. "I'm ready when you are."

Archer in a frilly dress... the thought would almost be enough to make even Homura have to stifle a giggle. She looked over at Kyoko and listened. The yellow horse? Oh, that pony that had brought Kyoko to the Inn originally. Homura had never really interacted with that pony anyway, but she'd seen the pony introduce Kyoko. That was just about it, actually... Kyoko must have enjoyed the company of that pony.

Archer probably wasn't dead, but despite everything, Homura truly didn't know whether this mark was linked to Archer permanently or whether it was just a general mark for Servants. She thought it might be linked to him, but there'd need to be another Servant arriving for her to tell for sure, because said Servant would attempt to murder her if it were true. She knew the rules of the Holy Grail War at this point, and it was kill or be killed at all costs. She didn't think she had it that bad, as a Magical Girl.

It was an interesting question, but Homura pretty much had been fighting for her wish - not the one she'd made, but her true wish. To save Madoka from a life of despair. "It would be a long, difficult battle. We would be at an advantage, as Magical Girls." After all, they were more adept than the Magi of Archer's world were. Especially with their abilities fighting Witches.

"Let's go." Homura held her hand up, transforming in front of Kyoko - once transformed, she started hopping from building to building, knowing Kyoko would follow.

    Into battle, we ride.
