    Minuet of the Forest

Although the Kindle Forest was not quite the same as the forest that clung to the far reaches of his memory, Vaati still found it to be surprisingly peaceful. He still preferred his own Palace of Winds over anywhere else in this strange world, but he did find some areas, particularly the less modernized and populated ones, to be rather nice from time to time. He loved his home in the sky, but every now and then, it was good to get out and simply enjoy the quieter parts of this world. Here, he could also enjoy the sylvan setting of what was typically a neutral environment, one that he did not have any past connections to, no matter how subconscious any of those might have been. Some still sat where he could remember them, but be that as it was, he knew he had come a long way from then... and he could still enjoy the forest without feeling any restrictions from his past.

Closing his eyes and taking a slow, deep breath through his nose, the former Minish soon let it out in a quiet sigh. Yes, this was most refreshing... the chance to get out not only for some fresh air but a different perspective was wonderful. Even through the sweltering summer that had sat in, the forest was still a comfortable temperature beneath the shade of the lush canopy, and the longer he stood here, the more the Wind Mage was pleased that he had decided to head out for a little while this afternoon.

Vaati kept his eyes closed for several seconds as he simply listened to the ambient sounds of the forest that surrounded him. Various birds, insects, and other creatures let out their own vocalizations, adding to the simple symphony beneath the trees. Their own noises were not nearly as prevalent or as loud as they could be at night, much less during the height of spring, and as such, right now, they were rather pleasant. The simple breeze that wove its way through the trees and the faint sounds of a nearby brook flowing through were especially nice, and it was once a bit more of the gentle wind blew past him that Vaati opened his red eyes.

"Hm." Smiling ever so slightly, the Wind Mage took in the sights of the immediate area before he began to walk forward, making his own way through the trees and shrubs as he took this chance to continue to enjoy the early afternoon. He was not looking for anything in particular on this outing except perhaps some peace to enjoy on his own in a different setting. Thus far, it had already proven refreshing, and he was set to continue with that before he warped back to his palace in the sky.

Weaving his way through the sylvan landscape before him, Vaati could feel an even greater sense of relaxation settling over him. He had not been especially tense lately, but various areas of peace and quiet were something he always appreciated. He had an entire palace to himself regardless of the minions he kept there, and whilst he was certainly looking forward to returning to it before too long, each step found him becoming increasingly glad that he had ventured out this afternoon.

The Wind Mage continued forward, only pausing as the soft breeze returned and began to blow just past him. His favored element could be found here beneath the canopy as well, and that was yet another reason Vaati was pleased at his choice of destinations. He was one that was prone to bide his time around his plans, but even as he always had them in mind, he did know how to take time just for himself when he needed it… that helped him better enjoy things, and whenever he was ready to strike, it helped keep him especially set to do just that. Vaati was not one to be caught unawares, and in being able to hone his relaxation and his focus in their own ways, he hoped to strengthen just that.

Vaati continued through this stretch of the Kindle Forest for quite some time, still enjoying the relative quiet and definite peace that the area met him with. The path he had started on wound up leading him to an area that seemed to get darker and darker as he went, but with as nice as that was, it appeared to be temporary, namely due to the layout of the trees in the canopy above him. It was certainly an interesting effect even if it was one he was very used to, and he appreciated the added tranquility that it seemed to afford him.

The Wind Mage kept up his trek for several minutes more until he found himself in a rather shaded clearing, one complete with a large tree stump. The tree it had once belonged to appeared to have been sheared off quite some time ago, but save a few mushrooms near its base and moss at its roots, it appeared to be surprisingly clean. Feeling that he wished to enjoy this space for a good while longer, Vaati stepped forward, soon moving to sit atop the stump, and only once he was settled did he take in his surroundings even more.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out in a rather contented sigh, Vaati thought to himself once more that yes, it had been a very good day to come out and enjoy the forest. It was almost always a good place to visit, and today was only proving that further.

The longer Vaati sat in this shaded clearing, the more he found himself appreciating it. There was plenty of grass and moss covering the floor of this area, some small plants spotting that turf here and there, and even a couple of young saplings that were just starting to take their true forms. The long cut tree stump that he was seated upon might have heralded the end of that age in the forest, but new growth was certainly taking place.

As one who had long since had his own growth from lowly Minish to powerful sorcerer, Vaati of all people appreciated the chance for something new to replace the old, and every day, he was replacing his past self in new ways. That stood for his earliest days, that stood for the strange fog he had landed in when he first arrived on the Breach, and he knew it would stand true as he continued forward. He was the Wind Mage, and he was as unshakable and unforgiving as his strongest element.

Earth might have usually been seen as unshakable instead of wind, but if one thought far deeper into the purest nature of each force of nature, wind truly was unable to be shaken. Earth could contend with earthquakes, rocks being smashed, being forced open with a shovel, and all sorts of other con act. It was not weak, but it could be shaken, be it by itself or outside forces. The wind however… that could not be shaken at all. It could hardly be grasped, much like air itself it was all encompassing, and simply put, something could not be shaken if it could easily dodge and exist past that.

Whilst Vaati was unfortunately fully aware of the fact that he had been caught in a deep fog around his early arrival here, he did not see himself as shaken so much as shifted. He was not happy that such a thing had happened, but even though his outward actions had not always been as true to his nature as they could have been, he knew very well that at his core, he was still the same person. That was how he was able to make his true return, and in spite of that shift, he was going to carry forward, stronger and more powerful than ever.

Vaati did his best not to dwell on the fog that had completely enshrouded him around his arrival and earliest time in this world, but the fact that the had fallen victim to it in the first place did creep back into his consciousness from time to time. That was simply the way his mind worked. Whilst enough time could pass to help him forget other happenings or pieces of information from the past, in the grand scheme of things, this was still relatively recent. He had been aware of it, even if most of his awareness had only been triggered well after the fact.

He would not deny the shift, at least for the foreseeable future, but be damned if it was ever to become anything but a distant memory for him. Wind Mage or not, he was far greater than that.

Although Vaati did try his best to never think too hard on what he viewed as an anomaly in his past (albeit one that lasted far longer than he felt it should have), that did not mean it was incapable of flaring up in his mind from time to time. Eventually, he might be able to forget it, but it was still regrettably tied to his memories… and other memories were not worth sacrificing just to rid himself of this one. Annoying as it was, that time did bring him some useful information about this strange world, and even as it was constantly changing, some of that was still good to hold onto… at least for reference and building his own knowledge base here.

Not dwelling on something did not mean he was not allowed to think about it at all, but he did still hope that it would find itself on the fringes of his memory before too long. Once it was there, it would be far simpler for it to fade into obscurity.

As far as that dark time in his long life went, one passing thought that stemmed from the unfortunate memory of it was just how many people the Wind Mage had wound up meeting around it. Some were those that he might have very well been able to make a connection with even when he was himself, such as Ninetails and of course Xiao Xiao… others were of course interesting maidens. Still, far too many were people that he knew he would have hardly paid a second thought or curious pondering over. He suppressed a shudder at the particular way he had taken on a number of… guests in his palace. In retrospect, again, a couple of them still stood a chance of receiving another invitation there, but even those were more out of a combination of their skills, maiden status, and to a lesser degree his trust for them. Vaati was a loner by nature and even for the select few he did trust, he did not necessarily divulge everything.

One perfect example was Xiao Xiao, his newest and most strangely loyal minion. He had been very intrigued by the odd maiden a few years ago, but even when she proved to be a squirrel demon at the core, he still kept her around. She still had plenty of untapped magic within her, and he still found that, her more mundane skills, and the fact that she followed him mostly unquestioningly to be very useful. He trusted her a fair bit farther than he could throw her, which was quite a distance since she was so small and lightweight, not to mention capable of gliding, but the fact remained that even an inkling of trust had formed. He could ask her to do things, he could give her things… but that did not mean that he shared every single thing that was on his mind.

Eventually, there would likely come times where he asked her to do things, and he would have to carefully answer her if she questioned him. Vaati was prepared for that. As it was though… he was dare he said… glad to have gained such a loyal minion. Even if she drove him up a wall with her antics at times, she had still proven useful, and he had a strong feeling that she would continue to do so for him.

As far as Xiao Xiao was concerned, Vaati was for the moment rather curious as to just what his most loyal minion might have been up to today. He knew that she quite loved the forest, possibly even more than him. Possibly... no, she definitely did, and that was saying something since he did rather like it himself. They both had a tendency to take to it before most other destinations below the Palace of Winds, and that right there was one of the things that confirmed that around some of her more curious interests, the squirrel demon did have good taste in some regards.

Baos were another thing she had good taste in… hm… he might have to surprise her with some more at some point, loyal subject that she was…

Admittedly, he was a bit surprised that she had not tried to drop in on him or “just happen” to appear out here, but the forest was a big place after all, and he was quite skilled at heading out of his own palace without anyone being the wiser. Whether she showed up or not though, today was still shaping up to be a fine day.

As Vaati contemplated the possible appearance of his magical squirrel demon of a minion, he too found himself wondering just why his thoughts had wandered to her in the first place. On further reflection, he was able to retrace his full train of thought; a process that never ceased to please him. His thoughts were usually pretty easy to trace even with the maze like path they could take… or at least they were easy to trace for himself. So long as he could work through his thoughts, every idea, plan, and plot, that was all that truly mattered.

One day at a time was the key with so many ideas, and holding the importance of patience was key.

Vaati was an expert at that, and it was something he had only learned more about himself since he had arrived on the Breach. Previous mental fog or not, he had been forced to reassess things, and through it, he felt he had only grown stronger.

After a good long while, and after a most excellent chance to enjoy and appreciate this part of the forest, Vaati let out a deep sigh. For the Wind Mage, it was a surprisingly content one, but right now, he was in an even better mood than when he had first set off for the forest. It had been a good chance to clear his head, and being able to see just how… normal and untouched things were here had been surprisingly cathartic. Whilst he had long since shed his Minish origins, the welcome solitude and peaceful nature of a forest was something that he would always appreciate. Even if that full connection was something lost to the far reaches of his most distant memories, he did still have that simple chance for escape within him.

Much like his affinity with the wind itself, he was able to find peace here.

And much like the wind, he was set to come and go as he pleased.

With a soft chuckle to himself and a simple motion of his hands, a sudden gust of wind materialized in the clearing, swirling around the Wind Mage as he focused on his next destination. He had enjoyed his brief getaway out here, but now, it was time to return to his palace in the sky. Vaati did know that he might be back here sooner rather than later, but for now, today’s trip had been more than sufficient, and he was ready to take on the rest of his day.
