    What A Pleasant Opportunity

It would be a shame to let this place go to waste...

For a few days the AI had been pondering a conundrum, one of personal logistics. How could he manage to make himself a second body without the aid of human involvement? Not that he had not appreciated the Chop Shop's superb competence in their work, but there was a snag, as there was with all things. Of course deactivation would have reared its ugly head at some point, even if the head mechanic meant it well for his well being, or so she said. Even so, KARR could not allow himself to stare into that dark, static filled maw of near oblivion. Not even for a few seconds for the sake of keeping his circuitry intact and removing the risk of surge damage. To many, it was a trivial thing, anyone with a computer system likely was familiar with a reboot whenever they installed something new onto their system, but to experience it... To stay in that damnable void of restless stasis for so long, even a few seconds was a taste of the hell he had been subjected too which he did not wish to sample again anytime soon.

In essence it was a death of the body with only a portion of the mind still functioning, registering fully its isolation from the world. Time, space and the teeming beings that drove history; past, present, and future were dead to him, just as he was to them and he knew it. Who would want for such a torment?

Yes, he had promised that he would return to the shop in four weeks time, yes he had stated that he would return and bring the Dark Judge with him to oversee the process. However, that in itself had been a lie. After all, his driver had left the moment he returned from that venture into the thorns he and his brother had been forcibly shoved into, seeking something... Even if he did physically track them down, it would be a chore to carry them all the way back.

What he found here however, was far more appealing.

KARR was familiar with the Tech Dome, having heard of its existence once, and visited it once as well. Upon an initial scan he had found the place to be useful for salvaging the components for his systems. As he had scanned deeper into the place however, he found something far more interesting, more useful than some mere scrap yard. He had found it the moment that he had tracked his driver down into its depths, a factory essentially that created and destroyed its products all in one circuitous fashion. All of its components had been manufactured from the same materials that had been scrapped and melted down the moment they were assembled. Due to this paradoxical design, the AI thought little of the place initially. But now...

He knew the place could be influenced, it could be commanded and seized by anyone who wished to take the initiative. So far as he could see there was no one as of yet who had taken this place for their uses, leaving it to remain a simple scrapyard. Wasteful, he coldly decided. And he was right, although the AI was not about to toss aside his good fortune. The absence of an owner for this place meant there would be far less effort in taking it for himself. No safeguards, no barriers to keep him from accessing the core of this facility. Through this place he could do so much for himself, and he would.

Having idled outside the massive hangar doors long enough, KARR's tires crunched upon sand as he rolled inside. The hot desert wastes were exchanged for cool shade, the husks of old relics, a retired robot repair facility from the looks of things, left in piles or hanging from the ceiling in exposed circiutry. This place, from the patchy assembly lines that were missing parts of their mechanics and panels upon the conveyor belt itself to the scavenged and picked apart skeletons of robotic arms and other machinery, was useless. Small parts were crushed beneath his tires as he continued on, finding nothing of use. Boxes and parts piles were pushed aside as he slowly explored on, making his way to the doorway at the very back of the building.

That was where his opportunity laid.

Before the AI was a door, already pushed open from prior entry from others before. One of course was his driver but there had been someone who had initially unlocked the factory area. After all, the chains that were around the door had been cut away at some point. Given the presence of the beginnings of rust it likely occurred a year or two ago at the most. Beyond that the AI could see clearly a corridor that traced straight back to another set of doors, which lead to the manufacturing portion. Even from here he could readily detect the sounds of industry that echoed from within, an assembly line that never slept.

Scanning the building and the chamber beneath revealed what KARR had suspected already of the place. There was a mainframe within the building which dictated what the assembly line produced, a task given to each working arm of the basement facility. The simple matter was to take command of it and change its work order to what he wished of it, a task that could be done within minutes, a simple tweak in programming could also keep the assembly line from tossing his new body into the furnace the moment it was completed. The more challenging part however was getting himself into that body. Without a pair of extra hands, a CPU transfer was near impossible, and the corridor into the factory itself was less than accommodating for his vehicular form.

The shrill whine of his turbines echoed around the silent hangar as he pondered this, his thoughts returning back to the assembly line. More specifically, all the perfectly capable bodies that were constantly being tossed into the ever-hungry maw of the furnace. Could they be re purposed, spared from their inevitable fate to serve him instead... An epiphany sparked within his processors; he could manufacture his own maintenance staff! All programmed to suit his requirements to the tee, without requirement of pay, without the risk of betrayal, and most importantly, without that incessant curiosity of wondering why he needed his upgrades or for what purpose.

The AI found something similar to a sensation of giddiness coarse through his circuits, wasting no time as he linked himself to the factory mainframe.

At the very heart of the factory complex, deep down in a room stained with age and neglect, sat a relic of years past. Dust covered metal panels covered its vast form, the machine's creators having abandoned it with such haste as to refrain from switching it off, if such a choice had been available at the time of their mysterious departure. Now, it sat as an artificial obelisk, various lights winking and glowing like a multitude of tiny eyes in the dark of its chamber. It was a mystery in itself how the thing still managed to function despite the lack of care and maintenance, but such was the nature of the Tech Dome's mainframe.

However, its lonely existence was soon to be interrupted.

Despite the long years that the mainframe had been left to its lonesome, it apparently was not interested in having any company. The port that held the detected activity was quickly blocked from usage as defense protocols took effect. The system's walling off of the port was soon accompanied by a prompt that blinked into existence...

There was a small chime from his systems as KARR linked with the factory mainframe, oddly enough compared to a great amount of technology that he had observed thus far, this particular system was rather old. In fact it was reminiscent of the computer systems back from his universe. Little in the ways of protection, the mainframe only registered that he essentially was an unknown entity from within the building complex. Of course, the AI knew better than to assume that there was no protection on such an important machine, even if it was left to rot down here.

In a way he would have almost felt sympathetic to its plight, if not for the fact it lacked the higher intelligence of his processing ability, and the fact it was still allowed to run on its own despite being abandoned by whoever had built this relic of a building in the first place. It certainly was far more than he had been granted, and to one that knew not what it held at its disposal! Too simple to think for itself, the mainframe continued to manufacture and destroy what its creator had input into it. It was time that changed.

A brief second after having identified its visitor, the mainframe sealed itself off and placed up a simple prompt; the request for a password. KARR probed his way around the prompt and upon the digital wall that had been placed up to keep him out. At one point it may have been a formidable defense to whatever archaic programs may have attempted to force their way in, but for a system as advanced and superior as KARR, it was little more than a flimsy tower of paper. The fact that the mainframe had been sealed off from any outside connections and lacking any sort of maintenance for years on end, there were likely plenty of holes in its security. Of course, KARR could got the route of attempting to figure the password of the system he was connected to, but all the same he enjoyed having a little fun himself with the relic.

Thus, the AI began to probe and examine the mainframe's defenses, relentlessly searching for any unprotected backdoor that could be used to his advantage, or holes that had developed due to lack of care.

    ---

Probing: Flip a coin, if HIT, KARR finds a hole in the mainframe's defenses.

Every port had firmly clamped themselves shut upon the AI's curious probing, wall after wall slamming down as quickly as the mainframe identified the source. Over and over again, it named an unknown intruder, meeting the other system's efforts with the same, simple request box.

    >>INPUT PASSWORD

Despite what the AI may have perceived, this mainframe was hardly a reflection of its age. Every block that was placed had been as solid as the one before it, lacking any flaw or hole in its design. Whether it be through having a self maintenance program installed before being abandoned or the influence of someone or something that could not be detected within the building, everything was as solid as it had been the day it had been activated.

A small detail that seemed to be taken in some small form of smug pride, with how the input prompt cursor evenly flickered at KARR's digital presence. Ever stoic in its request it awaited the AI's response for a password with a machine's adamant patience. Go on KARR, try your luck, it had all day to see what you had to offer its simple yet cryptic riddle.

After all, there was nothing to suggest there was a finite amount of wrong answers to give. At least not yet.

Like a many headed hydra KARR had struck at every available opening and port that he could find, and each time he was successfully thwarted. Port after port was slammed shut with a digital wall, each of which were seemingly impenetrable unless one could acquire the proper password.

While such a situation would prove vexing to one who was unfamiliar with a computer, much less a mainframe, the AI could not help but find its protocols to be entertaining. Swift enough to counter his probing, and strong enough to keep him out with nary a flaw in the defense protocol's design. Truly this machine was the work of one who wished for their system to last long after they had departed, along with retaining what secrets it could tell of this place. All the same, KARR decided to decline the mainframe's constant and stubborn request for a password in order to enter its systems.

Instead of playing to the machine's rules, he decided that he was going to learn a little more about it. His scanner arrays focused upon the massive relic that sat within the depths of tech dome, penetrating past the steel chassis to read over every hardware component that he could find, any and all clues that could be deduced from its parts, any data to be gained from the stickers that may or may not have been left upon its surface or labels that had been press stamped into its metal covering.

Once KARR had compiled all the data he could on the machine, he ran it through his databanks, making an attempt to identify exactly what sort of system this was. Much to the AI's surprise, this mainframe was military issued according to the serial numbers upon the different components. He cross referenced them all from the paneling to the chips and other hardware inside, until he found something of a close match. While the mainframe was similar to that of Earth during his time period, it also appeared to be a custom order specifically made for this facility.

Just like himself, it was one of a kind.

Even so, a custom built machine could still have exploitable flaws. A machine such as this one was built to manage data and commands that were being used in a continuous loop, along with keeping track of all that this facility had produced. Therein, there needed to be an access point in order to gather data without requiring authentication.

Once again, KARR prodded, focusing on searching for an access point for data retrieval.

A military mainframe it certainly was, and like a military mainframe, it was not about to put up with anything this ambitious strange system was about to throw at it. Having locked down all of its available ports, there left only one other possible route to try. The mainframe's nosy company decided to poke and prod where it was not due, especially in areas that were supposed to be for higher ranking, secure entry. The moment this unknown IP decided to try its luck, another message glared before it.

    >>UNAUTHORIZED INTRUDER: ACCESS DENIED

Not a single digital orifice lay open for the AI to take advantage of, the mainframe essentially as well protected as a fort despite its age and disrepair. Whoever had built and programmed this thing had definitely made sure that it would last through the decades, and so would the secrets that it held.

With KARR's attempt at hacking into a backdoor failed, he once again would find himself faced with prompts for password input at every port, the din of industry quietly echoing in the background of the abandoned factory. Over and over the prompt's input tab blinked, almost like one would tap their finger expectantly against a desk while jadedly awaiting a response.

What would be the AI's next move?

Just as the Mainframe was secure from above, so was it from below. There was not a single insecure area for KARR to take root and search through a single file or plaintext for information. All he was met with was a similar denial of access to the system before being walled off. His last venue of intruding the mainframe having failed, KARR retreated back into his own processor, the prompt which demanded a password glaring into the digital void all the same until his departure.

There had to be some way into this thing, but how? KARR delved into his own databanks, searching through file after file on programming, computer systems, and coding. The mainframe's programming language was well known enough, in fact, according to a few of the files on the subject, this particular mainframe was still using a DOS system. As for which one, however, it still needed to be seen. This particular system was not so keen on giving any introductions before he gave a password. Nonetheless, it still was a dated system that could easily be overcome if he could just figure out its weakness.

    Oh, what was this?

One of the files that lay along with the others on programming seemed to be rather promising, this one going over what was called a DDoS attack. Intrigued, KARR poured over it. If the AI was able to he would have been grinning from fender to fender at what he read...

The viruses involved was simple to create, and its distribution was very effective, especially against such an old system as this one. Swiftly KARR went on to create the catalyst for what the article called a zombie agent. Ah, but one must not fret, the AI held no interest or desire to infect himself with it. After all, there were plenty of viable machinery laying around that would gladly sacrifice themselves for his goals. After a few minutes of compiling and organizing the code and data required for this particular malicious entity and quarantining it inot a package, KARR turned his attention to the row of computers upon the second floor of the complex, his microjammers activating the old relics with a dusty whir of cooling fans and the crackle of derelict screens coming online. Of course, a few of them had blown out from age upon being activated, but their function was not necessary. All KARR needed was the processors of the desktops.

Down in the factory, KARR turned his attention towards the robotics that were hard at work, his scans of their systems showing that they, unlike the mainframe that overlooked all, held no protections. Perfect.

At once he made contact with each and every one of them, streaming the packet into them alongside a torrent of fragmented data. There the virus took hold and began to multiply in both the automatons working tirelessly below and the ancient desktops on the second floor.

    >>BLACKKNIGHT.EXE_STATUS: READY
    >>EXECUTE?: Y/N

The message sat bold and clear upon KARR's monitors, thousands of bots standing at the ready for his command. Could this have been what a general felt like as his troops awaited his command, weapons poised and waiting to fire? It was exhilarating, admittedly, knowing what was to come as the mainframe sat without a clue as to what was transpiring just outside of it.

The input of a single command was given and the program initialized, a flood of data pouring into the mainframe on all of its ports to the point of being overwhelming.

DDoS: Each turn KARR rolls two 96-100 die to determine the impact of each wave of data flooding. The attack is successful once the Mainframe is completely overwhelmed.

After two unsuccessful attempts at trying t breach its security, the unidentified IP had retreated. Whether or not it was due to the entity having lost its morale or something else entirely was not something the mainframe pondered upon, Soon after the intruding entity had left, the ports that had been sealed off reopened, as the system could not rightfully tell who or what to block given the anonymity of its intruder.

A victory for the aging relic of innovation past, but a short live one.

While the mainframe's routine was set back into its usual motions, something sinister was transpiring where it could not see, an army of bots carried upon a virus forged within the minutes of peace that had been granted to it. This was no mere retreat and surrender, it had been a calm before the true storm had hit.

At once the mainframe's ports, all of them, had been flooded with information, fragmented digital static swamping it from all sides. This however did not come from the open ports that had been prodded at earlier, but from the machines that served within the complex. Dusty computer towers and primitive robotics infected and zombified to carry out the bidding of a virus and its creator. Regardless, even this ancient husk still held some fight in it, as it attempted to divert the overwhelming traffic from completely overloading its systems.

KARR's scanners kept a solid eye on the mainframe as the attack commenced, all of the systems ports suddenly overflowing with data that it struggled to keep up with. Already he could sense it beginning to slow as it attempted to divert the attack. At this detail, the AI could not help but ponder... So, this system was built to handle heavy, if not overwhelming traffic as well? At least, traffic that was in accord to its own time, which was likely as old as him or older. Once he managed to infiltrate this relic, he would take great satisfaction in looking through all it had to offer.

Relentless in his assault, the bots under his command kept the pressure on while he watched. The mainframe, even with its stubborn, if not valiant effort to keep itself from being overwhelmed, had its breaking point. All systems had their breaking points...

However, the AI still held some inclination towards keeping his surveillance mode online despite how remote this ruin was. Should something passing by be able to pick up on his activity, he would rather be ready to handle the interruption to his efforts than be caught off guard. He had been here long enough to know that there were beings that could sense through his outer appearance of a mere terrestrial vehicle, both electronic and organic. Whether they were curious in their investigation or malicious, the AI was not one to wish to find out when he was so close to victory.

Try as it may and try as it might, the factory mainframe was unable to keep up with all of the data flow that was surging its way. Soon, even its well designed channels which had been made for high input and output , had fallen to the sheer mass of data that was eating up its processing capacity. While at one time it likely could be able to handle the massive amount of data input, given its massive capacity, years of neglect had left both hardware and software to wither. The times of being able to handle multiple incoming files, each the size of terabytes had since past for this machine.

Another crushing wave of data flooded its system, peripheral processors soon finding themselves overflowing with incoming data to the point where they could not manage it. The data that spilled over into the core processors began to show their toxicity, as the entire system began to slow. More and more, it began to lag until finally it was so overburdened that it could hardly function nonetheless stave off an unauthorized intrusion.

    Capacity: 131/100 OVERWHELMED

Overwhelmed!: The mainframe is overfilled with data to the point of being unable to defend itself, it no longer can shut off its ports or execute defensive protocols.
