"I-I'm just taking a breather, sir."

    And there it was.

Judge Fear didn't wait a second to jump at Kev's heels. "Breather?" he repeated, incredulous. Here it comes. "Oh, ssso I sssuppossse it isss perfectly acceptable to asssk for a breather in the midssst of a tenssse firefight when a creep'sss bulletsss are whizzing passst your head. I sssuppossse it isss perfectly acceptable to asssk for a breather when your neck isss on the line, risssking everything for the sssake of jussstice." Cruel is as cruel does, and the Dark Judge viciously laid into the alien. "No breather, cadet! Get back to finissshing your crunchesss, all sssixty-sssix of them! Up, up, UP!" the ghoul demanded. There was no asking for a breather; not now and not ever. If a seasoned Judge of the law could not have one, neither could a lowly cadet who had not earned their full badge.

"Do not let me repeat myssself, cadet." A thinly-veiled threat as any. "You are already intimate with the penalty for failure, and I will not tolerate a lacklussster performance. Resssume and complete your exercissse!" Do it, alien, or you shall suffer.

As predicted, the Judge swooped down like a dog consuming a bone, words like teeth as the alien fixed a hard stare at the dark skies above. "No, sir. It is not acceptable, sir." You'd think that it'd be acceptable to ask for a break when one was doing one hundred bicycles, but of course, this wasn't a trip to the gym. This wasn't yoga class. This was training, Judge Fear style. Breaks were only permissible when dictated by him. Urged to get back up, his hands clawed at the back of his own scaly dome as he worked his elbows up, lifting his legs back up to bob in the air. A knee was brought in and his elbow touched it before he went back down.

Failure. Lackluster. Those words filled him with frustration, of course the alien was expected to completely master a new exercise that he was just learning. Of course. "It won't happen again, sir." To live was to suffer. He was already suffering. He worked himself back into the rhythm of before, touching his elbow to his knee and crunching down only to crunch back up. At least Judge Fear didn't make him start all over again, right? And yet, his body was still throbbing in certain areas, craving rest. Craving another Sunday. Pain is temporary, he told himself! It hurts so much. Pain is brief, temporary, it would stop soon. It was just going to continue on and on for the next few weeks like it always did. Pain was an illusion, time was an illusion, he had to continue, he had already started he could not stop yet. This was a mistake. Kev's thoughts whirled for a moment, the alien taking in a few shallow breathes as he finished his sixtieth crunch, before he shoved it all away. He could not afford to think of anything right now, not even pain. Not even if it was to tell himself the pain was only temporary. Breathing, up, down, touch his elbow to his knee, he kept his mind focused on that. Up, down. Elbow, knee. 66. 67. 68... Don't get pessimistic, don't get optimistic. Just get it done. Seventy crunches became eighty, eighty became ninety. His method was riddled with fatigue, limbs trembling and moving slowly. The last ten crunches were possibly the worst. Only once he reached the hundredth bicycle did he allow himself to flatten against the ground again.

"It isss not acceptable and yet you went ahead and did it anyway." Had this been Law School and had Kev been an actual cadet, an instructor wouldn't have missed the opportunity to smoke the alien. At best, he would flunk. At worst, he would become a "target perp" for the canine units to practice with. Either way, Kev should be grateful for the instructor that he had now. Judge Fear grunted. "Sssee that it doesssn't, cadet," he rasped. "Complete your exercissse and complete them properly." Do not settle for a poor job, do you understand?

    70.

    It hurts so much.

    80.

It was just going to continue on and on for the next few weeks like it always did.

    90.

    This was a mistake.

    100.

Control your doubts, cadet. Think not of them but of what you were reaching to achieve. Remember the lessons about impermanence. The alien had managed to successfully finish his crunches after some "encouraging", but if he thought those had been challenging enough... "You can do better," Judge Fear remarked. One can always do better. "Fifteen sssecondsss have been sssubtracted from your break total, allotting you fifteen sssecondsss inssstead of thirty. Thisss isss the penalty for taking it upon yourssself to ssstop during. Your break beginsss now, cadet. After that, you are to give me fifty pusssh-upsss. They are to be done on your count." 12... 11... 10...

Went ahead and did it anyway, as if he were a delinquent attempting to get away with something. "I did not intend to 'do it anyway', sir." His tone was neutral, yet something of a dying spark was in his eyes. He was so frustrated, and yet so tired. Just when he found some sort of stability in these exercises, it was yanked away. True, he could not grow if he were given the same exercises he now learned to do...but a hundred of these things felt horrible. His abdomen felt like it'd been stretched too far, his thighs felt like someone was sitting on them and pinning them down, and his back just seemed to throb.

    "You can do better,"

You will never be good enough. Even if Kev were to master these bicycle crunches in the upcoming weeks, they would be upped to two hundred, or even three hundred. And a penalty...his break had been sliced in half. Where once would have been thirty seconds to breath and relax, now there were fifteen that were quickly ticking down. Kev's fingers dug into the grass and a lump formed in his chest. For a moment, he wished that the ground could just eat him up right there on the spot. Alas...the seconds ticked by and he knew that if refused to do those push-ups, it'd be worse than being gobbled up by the ground. He rolled himself over and pressed his hands against the grass, palms flat.

Assuming the position, the alien lowered himself down into the grass. "Down." His body was as straight as it could be, attempting not to use anything in his abdomen for this. His arms flexed and he lifted himself up. "Up. One." Only 49 more to go. And then he could see what else waited for him. If physical training was made this much more difficult... "D-down." Back to the dewy grass, and again he pushed himself back up. No thinking about it. "Up. Two." He could do this. Ten push-ups, twenty, fifty, it was all the same. No more time penalties. No more demerits for today. "Down. Up. Three." He did the best he could, over and over he recited the words and did the motions. Down, up, count. Once he finished the fiftieth push-up, he flopped into the grass and laid where he dropped. Grass rubbed up against his face, but he didn't care. What was next on the list?

Mm, that frustrated glint in the alien's eyes... It brought the undead fiend comfort, unseen lips pulling into a miniscule smile. You will be good enough, Kev, rest assured. By the end of this, assuming you did not succumb and perish, you will. But first you must weather the storm...

    Fifteen minutes.

    Fifteen whole minutes.

This was how long it had taken the alien to complete his push-ups, but that was fine. It hadn't been a race, it hadn't been timed. The point of these exercises thus far was to test - and break - Kev's stamina. Judge Fear had been circling the trembling alien as he was typically wont to do, eyes fastened upon Kev's back. Remember the proper form, cadet. "That isss good enough," he at last hissed. Predictably, the alien slumped to the earth and might as well have been doing his best impersonation of a deceased person. If only, if only. There was the sharp poke of the Dark Judge's toenails as he lightly nudged them into Kev's side. "No resssting, cadet. Did I sssay that you could?" Ahh, just listen to that smug, insufferable tone. The hidden smile from early only widened, lips stretching further.

"I am pleasssed to announce that you have sssatisssfied your exercisssesss for the day, cadet. Now we continue with your weight training." And that meant picking yourself up off the dirt and pumping iron. You can't hope to further agonize yourself from down there, can you? Homemade dumbbells came rolling the alien's way, aided by an effortless push from the Dark Judge's rotten feet. Unlike the last set, however, these were heavier.

In fact, one could say that they were double the previous weight.

The fiend didn't bother waiting for Kev to fully rise. "It hasss come to my attention that you are no longer sssuited for ssseven kilogramsss," he decided. "Inssstead, you will be working with roughly fourteen." A wonderful old tosser, that Judge Fear. "Your workout isss the sssame, cadet. Asss before with your warm-upsss, you are to complete your sssetsss while pausssing five sssecondsss in-between repsss. Do them ssslow, concentrate, and remember to pace yourssself asss you breathe. Whenever you are ready, cadet, you may begin." And kindly do not take all day, hmm?

It took a while to do those push-ups, this was true. But if he was supposed to have any chance of actually completing what Judge Fear set forth for him, if he was really supposed to succeed, he had to pace himself. Push-ups weren't exactly his strong suit, and he was supposed to do fifty of them? In any case, even with the pacing, his body was still rather exhausted and once Judge Fear deemed his push-ups good enough, he flattened into the grass. Though something sharp poked his side. "No sir, you did not." And yet he made no move. He stayed on the ground, body melding with the grass and the dirt and letting the tension melt off of his bones and muscles. Exercises for the day were now mercifully completed, though weight training was next. With every physical exercise completed, it brought him that much closer to the mental exercises that he dreaded...oh, what he wouldn't give for the ability to stop time. Gather himself up before he was assaulted by those visions.

His face only lifted up from the grass when he heard the weights rolled their way over, giving them a dull look. Bigger. The weight had been increased. All of his exercises were increasing. The alien reached out and picked up one of the weights, holding it in his grip experimentally. He moved his arm from side to side, sitting up more properly now, and testing how the weight sat in his hand. Definitely heavier than what he had become used to, muscles straining a bit more with every movement to keep from dropping it onto the dirt. His workout routine stayed the same at least, this weight change aside. That meant three sets of ten, with five seconds of holding it. Obviously the Judge did not want him to rush through these exercises. If not rushing meant that he had more time to put off the mental exercises than boy howdy, he was going to take his sweet, sweet time!

Grabbing the other weight in hand, the Kryptonistanian stood up straight and tightened his hold on the weights. Don't take all day, yes sir yes sir. Side lateral raises were first, his feet slightly apart and his knuckles facing downward. Kev raised his arms up into the air until his hands were slightly above his shoulders, and held the position for five seconds. He paced his breathing as well, as his arms lowered back down. The weight change was significant. He raised his arms once again and completed the three sets of ten, pacing himself and and moving slowly, though a tremble of his arms betrayed how hard it was to not just drop the weights onto the ground. Kev took several deep breathes before moving to the next one, squat alternating dumbbell press. Feet spreading a bit more, Kev locked his arms into place to hold the weights near his head, as though the weights were a yoke he was balancing on his neck. Down he squatted, much like a perp squat, before lifting himself back up and thrusting an arm into the air. He held his position, and his wrist shook, threatening to give out and let the weight fall. He tightened his grasp, and lowered his arms and his body into a squat. Again and again he did his reps, taking his time as the Judge had instructed. This was definitely a different type of muscle pain then before. He'd packed on some muscle, so it couldn't be that he was too weak. Yet again, it seems it was his stamina that was lacking.

Position changed for alternating dumbbell curve. Arms moved so that the palms were facing out, and he lifted his forearms up so that the weight was lingering near his face. He nearly let his arm fall again before he locked it into place in order to hold the position. First one arm, and then the other over and over, making small grunts and huffs as he went on. Over and over and yet he still was not done. Though he didn't want to be done right now. He'd do a day's worth of weight training over the mental exercises. Overhead dumbbell triceps extension was next, position taken as before. With that same strange grasp on the weight, the alien held the weight behind his head and began his reps. Though the first rep saw him bumping the weight larger than he was used to, right on the back of his head with a nice thunk. Kev hissed, but otherwise made no outward reaction and just continued, though his arms were a lot more cautious about how he lowered the weight. A few times the weight seemed to wobble in his grasp as well. Though he did not want to rush through his exercises before, now he certainly did as his arms felt ready to just pop off at any given time. Alternating dumbbell front raise was next, and the alien took position before he raised his arms up in a wide arch. At the very top of its raise, he held position for five seconds. This exercise went by fast, the reps coming and going even as he did the five second hold.

Last, was the standing bent-over two-arm dumbbell triceps extension. Perhaps the weirdest position of them all, and definitely the most...unorthodox. Bent over, with his back as straight as it could get. His arms bent at his sides with those damned weights still attached to his hands. His grip tightened as much as it could get before both arms flexed backwards. His arms almost completely straight, he held the position for the allotted five seconds before his arms flexed forward in about a 90 degree angle. When his last ten reps had been finished, he at least had the decency to gentle place the weights upon the grass rather than drop them like waste. As soon as the weights were gone, he rubbed at his arms and stretched them around, muscles feeling too hard and taut.

Yes, sir. No, sir. I don't know why the hell I am bothering with this, sir.

Judge Fear had been around the block enough times to understand the alien's train of thought. Been there, done that; fifteen years in Law School and clocking over three-hundred on the job made three months seem like nothing. And it was. "No moping allowed, cadet," the undead fiend hissed. "I want you up and ready to pump iron. Up, up, up. If I sssee you lying about in the grassss for another five sssecondsss you are going to regret it." So make it quick, savvy?

Breathe, cadet, breathe. Ghostly eyes observed Kev's workout undisturbed, critical and without the need to blink. It was hard, wasn't it? It was hard being forced to adapt after you had just gotten the hang of things, the comfort of familiarity ripped out from beneath your feet. Such was life, such was life. There were worse things to consider that made lifting heavier weights pale in comparison. "Put your heart and sssoul into it," the Dark Judge urged. "Every movement isss an extensssion of yourssself, the agony you feel motivating you to try harder. Thessse weightsss, cadet, are nothing more than a physssical nuisssance. You are tired, yesss. But let not fatigue dictate your actionsss. It isss but a ssstepping ssstone to greater thingsss." A strange, vexing philosophy. Were Judges even human while alive...?

    Thunk!

Ah, baby's first weight to the head.

"Good lad. Don't paussse, don't quit. You are almossst through." Pain deserved no attention while there was an objective to complete. Focus, mm... Focus, cadet, and realize that you'll be done before you know it.

Weights were respectfully placed upon the earth, Kev finished with yet another toil. "Come," Judge Fear instructed. "It isss time for your next exercissse." No rest, though another mind stirred. Metus, having been previously silent and content with the role of being watcher, picked up his head. The dog released a low, gruff snort. "Hmm? Oh yesss, oh yesss. Sssilly me." It seems there was something else that the ghoul had forgotten. He glanced over an encumbered shoulder and rasped, "Belay that command, cadet. You may ressst for a moment and remove any articlesss of clothing ssshould you be hot. Water will be provided upon asssking. You have one minute. After that, I expect you at the old tree." Joy, pull-ups. "Disssmisssssed."

    One minute.

One whole minute to strip and enjoy the fledgling sunrise. It could be worse. It could always be worse.

Moping? This wasn't moping. ...Okay, maybe it was a little bit of moping. Yet, it didn't feel much like moping, because he wasn't necessarily sad. Just...tired. Nonetheless, Judge Fear urged for him to get up, even giving him a time limit. Kev wanted to hiss and recoil, bury himself into the ground and just hide from everything. From Fear, from the sun, from the world. Just hide and stop, yet he couldn't. Despite how run down he felt, he could not just come to a stop just yet, and so he picked himself up and lifted the weights as Judge Fear directed. The Judge watched, glowing eyes ever present, and his advice was...different. No harsh criticisms to change his form around, but instead he was told to put his heart and soul into it. Unsure what to do with that advice, Kev continued to flex and lift, attempting to put a bit of soul into it and not finding much to give. The agony was motivating him to try harder? But he couldn't possibly try harder. He was trying hard just to keep from failing. Any harder and he was going to tear a muscle! The words were absorbed, but the alien said nothing in return, just keeping his eyes steady on the ground, on his weights, on his arms.

For once, the Judge referred to him as something other than cadet, and that did earn a glance from the alien, who did as instructed and kept going. Once finished, he took a step towards his instructor as told, about to start his next exercise when Metus suddenly snorted. Nearly forgot the pooch was here, he did. A conversation went on between the two of them, Metus apparently reminding Judge Fear of something, and Kev looked back at the Judge when he glanced back. He was given a minute break, allowed to remove any clothes that may be getting in the way or too hot, and even allowed some water. Kev inclined his head in a small nod and settled himself onto the grass. After this he'd need to go to the old tree, and he knew what he would have to do there. For now, he'd focus on the break.

"May I have some water, Metus?" He asked with a polite tone, spaghetti arms fumbling to unwrap the ends of his hat from his neck and pulling the hat itself off. With the sun beginning to come over the horizon, he didn't need the hat so much. The ends of it only got in the way anyways...for a moment, the alien inspected his jacket, debating on if it needed to be removed or not. Hmm...pull-ups were next, he'd need his arms. The freer they were, the better he'd be. The alien shrugged his jacket off and set the hat in the middle of it before he rolled it up and folded it. At this point, he'd take the water bottle from Metus and take a drink, the water feeling cool and...well, wet. It didn't seem to carry the same sort of 'satisfying' feeling as it used to, and neither did the rays of the sun when they hit his scales. There was no question that his body definitely appreciated the sun and water, but otherwise...Kev picked himself up off the ground and scooped up his jacket bundle, holding it steady in both arms. Just in case he may need it again. His break was about over, and he had somewhere to be. The Kryptonistanian walked around to the back of the cottage, where the old tree waited.

But you can't hide, cadet. The world didn't screech to a halt simply because you could no longer handle it.

A water bottle was taken from the kitchen and lovingly placed into Kev's hands, Metus backing away slowly. Pant, pant, pant! Of course you may, friend. Water was tasty, water was good! Water kept the dry away. Are you dry, friend? The dog tilted his head to the side, inquisitive. That's okay if you are! I like you no matter what and I hope you like me no matter what, too! Happy, Metus bumped into the alien once and steadily made his way over toward the old, gnarly tree. Master is there, friend. Don't be late!

"You are on time. Hang up your clothing and assssume the posssition." It was the same thing, day in and day out. Kev struggled with his pull-ups like clockwork and that was not about to change today, nor was the Dark Judge expecting it to. "Today," he began, "you are to resssume asss before, three sssetsss of ten. Ssstarting thisss week, however, you are to hold the up posssition for five sssecondsss each rep." Brutal. Absolutely brutal, but did the alien honestly expect anything different from an undead fiend hellbent on annihilating all life? "When you are ready, cadet, begin. Thisss isss to be done on your count." And as with before, regarding the push-ups, you were expected to keep a steady rhythm. Don't forget to breathe, now.

Good dog. Metus earned a nice pat on the head after he bumped into Kev, the most he could scrounge up at the moment. Still, he ruffled the dog's ears and rubbed behind them, enjoying it while he could. What came next was going to be difficult. Thankfully, he was on time, which meant there were no more push-ups. His jacket was dropped to the side, on a clean patch of grass, and forgotten for the moment. The scaly man pulled at the sleeves of his sweater, making sure his wrists were unheeded by them. As ordered, he took the position, hands grasping the grippers on the metal bar.

Three sets of ten, the norm. Now there was a new rule, he would need to hold the 'up' position for five seconds. Kev let out a brief sigh, glancing upwards at the bar that never ceased to give him some trouble. Now he needed to hold his position... "Mm..." His fingers tightened on the grippers before his feet left the ground and he began, arms struggling to lift his head over the bar. He didn't struggle as much as he did that first week, though now he would need to put that to the limit. Kev's chin firmly over the bar, his arms locked into place. One, two, thr- "Hngh!" He dropped back down, letting out a few huffs as he hung for a moment. Getting up was hard to do already, and staying up...his fingers dug into the rubber and he lifted himself once more, no longer kicking his feet. By now, he had learned that doing so did nothing. His muscles locked again, straining to keep himself over the bar and his eyes shut tightly. One, two, three, f-, again his arms seemed unable to bear the weight for longer than a moment. He was so tired, and all of this work just seemed to go nowhere...his head hung lowly for a few moments, still hanging onto the bar.

Fear had said that this fatigue and agony was just his body trying to motivate himself to go farther, it was all just a stepping stone. Yet the stone seemed large and impossible to cross. Every step made to move across the stone just pulled him down. Trying only seemed to make everything worse. Even when he slept, he had nightmares, some of which seemed not to make any sense at all. His leisure hour and every Sunday seemed to be the only times where he could even start to feel happy again. Kev's hands trembled for a moment, the alien desperately wishing that he hadn't already cried so much because he wanted to cry right now. There were no more tears to give, not now. Not for this stupid metal bar.

He took a deep breath in as he pulled himself up once more, and held his place, glaring into the bark of the wood. One, two, three, four, five. "One," His arms lowered himself downwards before he again pulled himself up, silently cursing the bar and pretending that every successful pull-up put a dent into the smooth metal. "Two," He continued, and though every fifth pull-up saw him failing at least once, he refused to stop. Not until he could imagine the entire bar had been practically obliterated. This bar would be his outlet for his frustrations, this bar would bear the brunt of his emotions. It was far better than to say something and anger or hurt his instructor, or to take it out on Metus. The bar could take it. The bar couldn't do anything back. Kev took his time until three sets of ten had been completed, releasing the bar and letting his arms fall uselessly to his side, panting. Perhaps if he managed to get enough strength, he could bend that bar into a pretzel...

Well, he'll give the little green bean cred - Kev had managed to complete his thirty pull-ups without giving up, but Judge Fear had something else on the mind. Something that would no doubt chafe the alien's hide. Gangly arms crossed themselves as the Dark Judge kept his stare firmly upon Kev. "Very good, cadet. Now tell me what you did wrong," he hissed. The ghoul's tone... it was one of stern disapproval, mocking and without sympathy. Whatever you had done, Kev, it was enough to overshadow the crowning moment of your triumph over the barbell.

    What could it possibly be?

The alien turned around to face his instructor, head tilted to the side. Everything about the Judge was filled with disapproval. His tone was mocking, even. Wrong...Kev had done something wrong. But what? Kev clenched his fists, as he went over what he had done. Hold it for five seconds, three sets of ten...he only counted the one's he actually managed to hold for. He didn't give up, even though he really wanted to. What burr could be up that undead ass?

"Was I supposed to say 'up' and 'down', sir?" If he was supposed to, it did slip his mind, though Kev had a feeling that his...motivational tool had been to blame. "Or was I wrong to imagine every good rep was hurting the bar?" His gaze was steady at the Judge, waiting to hear his input. What had he done wrong, sir?

"Drop and give me five." The command had seemingly come from nowhere.

There was a burr up that undead ass, alright. There was a burr and it was aggravating enough to warrant punishment. "For every anssswer that isss wrong, cadet, you will owe me five additional pusssh-upsss," hissed Judge Fear. A soft groan came from Metus, though the dog knew better than to voice his dissent with the master. The Great Dane rested his head upon both forepaws and looked at Kev worriedly. Sorry, friend... An order was an order. "And asss it ssshould be." Yet again addressing Kev, the Dark Judge continued, "Now, I will asssk you again, cadet: tell me what you did wrong." Go on, while you make good on those push-ups.

Now what was this? The alien blinked, but lowered himself down onto the ground and assumed the position. At first, he thought that perhaps it was his sass that had earned these push-ups, only for the ghoul to insist that for every wrong answer, he would have to do 5 more of them. It had been...neither of them? Now he was completely flabbergasted. "Down. Up. One." He started his count, glancing up at the ghoul on as he finished his third push-up when addressed, pressured to answer what it was he had done wrong. What could he have done wrong? His feet had been off the ground, he held onto the rubber grips on the bar...was it something unrelated to the pull-ups?

"Down, up, four. Was I supposed to hang my jacket instead of setting it on the ground, sir?" He was at a total loss. What had he done wrong, so very very wrong? "Down, up, five." He stayed in push-up position, ready to give out more in case any of his answers were wrong. "Was it wrong to get frustrated?"

    Up, down - one.

    Up, down - two.

Judge Fear's eyes were trained like a hawk, the alien scrutinized with extreme prejudice. "I asssked you to tell me what you did wrong, not to ssspew whatever came to mind." You know what that means? "Give me another five. You ssseem to enjoy doing pusssh-upsss." No freebies, cadet. When you were asked a specific question in return for a specific answer, you obediently and respectfully comply. It was a simple relationship; you just chose to make it harder. Since when did the ghoul ask for two answers? "I don't hear you counting, cadet. Ssshall I give you another five ssso that you may remember your numbersss? I think I ssshould. Give me ten, cadet!"
