    Nascence [Week 4 - 6]

Post by Kev on Mon Feb 09, 2015 5:31 pm

    Time: 0512
    Date: 02/9/0005

The upstairs bedroom was meticulous in its cleanliness, as was the rest of the cottage. Three weeks of cleaning around the cottage would do that, after all. The closet was organized, the floor was free of dust, fur and even scales, and the bed was quite orderly, even with the alien and a few animals enveloped in the quilt. Situated in the corner, Marvin was powered down and in deep recharge. The scaly alien shuffled in bed, bumping into the sleeping animals that were nestled up against his side, before finally opening his eyes and staring up at the ceiling for a moment. Hm...no Metus yet. He must have woken up early. Kev sat up and stretched, letting out a slight moan. Gods, his body felt heavy...if only it were Sunday, he'd just crawl back under the covers and hibernate for a few more hours. Alas, Sunday was yesterday, and it had been a rather good visit with Livewire. Today was Monday, and the start of a new week. The fourth...hard to believe it was already the fourth, and yet it also felt so slow. They weren't even halfway there yet. At least he hadn't died yet, right?

Being careful not to bump into the sleeping dogs or the cat, Kev pulled his legs free of the covers and swung them over the side of his bed, giving one more big stretch before stepping up out of bed and lumbering for the closet. He had to admit, as tired as he was, he could definitely feel a difference. Kev wasn't exactly a bodybuilding behemoth yet, but his sore body was definitely beginning to get a bit thicker. The exercises that were once a struggle were now a bit easier to do. It was nice to not need a dose of Phazon to feel like this...though the other 'exercises' he had done were still rather hard. Kev had at least gotten to the point where he didn't cry during the mental exercises, but it didn't make it any easier to see such things on a nearly daily basis. Kev pulled on his clothes in a methodical fashion, lesson from the very first day not forgotten. Besides his normal clothes, the alien also pulled on a yellow sweater, and a thick blue jacket. Another pair of pants were pulled on, and his usual gloves were foregone for a pair of black knitted gloves. For a moment, Kev's hand lingered over a hat and scarf that bore knitted sheep on them. As much as he adored them, he knew they weren't suited for exercise. Something might come undone, or ripped. Instead, he grabbed an old hat/scarf, pulling it over his dome and wrapping the scarf ends around his neck.

As he exited the closet, wrapped and toasty for the day, Kev heard the telltale clicking of Metus' claws across the wooden floor. Grabbing the paper schedule and folding it up into his pocket, the Great Dane edged the door open and wandered in, head cocked to the side. Kev approached him and gave him a fond pat on the head. "Hey, boy. No wake up call today, I'm already awake." Hopefully he wasn't up too early or something. The alien walked over to a table by the wall, peering in on his turtles inside their glass cage. Still fast asleep. He rinsed out the water bowls and refilled them with clean water, giving them new food pellets as well. Perhaps during his leisure hour he'd slice up some lettuce and bring some up as a nice treat. Leaving the bathroom, he walked into the hallway with Metus at his heels, shutting the bedroom door. Rather then close it all the way, he left it open a crack for the sleeping animals that were still inside. Shuffling behind the eager dog, Kev plodded down the stairs and peered into the kitchen.

    0512.

What a pleasant shock this was. Even better was the fact that Kev adapted.

Judge Fear was doing what he normally did to start the training day: blending a nutritious medley of foodstuffs for the alien's consumption. Not exactly the most aesthetically-pleasing of meals; there was something about a thick, pale yellow slush that seemed unsettling to the average stomach. Nevertheless, it was just what the alien needed for an energetic morning. Milk, assorted fruit juices, yogurt, bananas - the same viscous porridge since training day one. Something had to be working if Kev hadn't bitten the bullet, right?

    WHIRRRRRRRRR!

The breakfast of champions. And speaking of a champion...

"Woof!" barked Metus. He was damn near going to wake up the rest of the cottage.

"Hmm?" Chains rattled and leather stretched, the towering Dark Judge pivoting upon his heels stiffly. It was devilishly hard maneuvering in a kitchen meant for ants. "Ah, cadet. I sssee you have awoken early. Good on you," he hissed. How did it go back in Law School? If you're on time, you're late. If you're early, you're on time. And if you're really early, you're not receiving any brownie points. Something like that. A gangrenous hand removed itself from the blender's lid and out poured a vitamin-packed, sugary goop into the alien's designated breakfast bowl. Mm, didn't that sound just wonderful, Kev? Ghostly eyes studied him quickly, the ghoul taking particular interest with Kev's... hat. "And I sssee you are continuing to make ussse of your judicially-approved winter attire. Wissse, asss they predict rain during the upcoming daysss." Both of them had been blessed with clear skies thus far. Pray that the weather continued its generosity.

Tap, tap, tap! When no more of the breakfast blend could be salvaged from the blender and every usable ounce had been collected, the filled bowl was set aside for the moment as Judge Fear went about cleaning Kev's appliance. An otherwise mundane task for an otherworldly, ominous being. "You may be ssseated, cadet, while I attend to the liquidissser. Your morning meal will not be ssserved for another fifteen minutesss, however." Breakfast was to be at 0530 and not a second more.

Pull up a chair and rest for a moment, Kev. There was a newspaper on the table and you were more than welcome to it. Though it smelled heavily of smoke and previously read, there was bound to be something of interest to idly pass the time.

Judge Fear was at his usual spot on the kitchen, stooped over a counter with several food bits mixed together in a blender. Kev lingered just outside of the kitchen, deciding to watch Fear silently and maybe take notes on what he did to make the breakfast sludge, though Metus quickly announced their entrance with a patented Great Dane bark. The Judge turned about to face the two of them and Kev stepped forward to face him directly rather than partially hiding behind the half-wall. "Thank you, sir." The alien inclined his head before turning his gaze to the goop in the blender. With a wet noise, it slid into the bowl and laid there like a...well, something not to be mentioned during breakfast time. "Indeed, sir. The sun doesn't rise for another hour or so, after all." Though what was this about rain? His head tilted to the side. "Should I dig out an umbrella or a poncho for us?" The Judge didn't exactly...react very well to water, after all.

Judge Fear turned himself towards the sink as he started to clean out the blender, directing for Kev to sit down and wait for breakfast to be ready. Technically the bowl was ready now, but breakfast was to be served at the same time, no matter when he woke up. Kev nodded his head and began to turn away, though he glanced back at Fear for a moment with a raised brow. Liquidiser...? With a shrug to himself and a pat for Metus, Kev sat himself down at the table and glanced down at the newspaper. Hmm...he picked the paper up and gave it a quick shake to dilute the smoky smell. He leaned back in his chair and held the paper up, leafing through the pages. Ah, there was the chance of rain for the upcoming days. Bit of filler...advertisements for local businesses. No sign of any disasters or attempts to take over the world...it was really strange to be so out of touch with the rest of the Breach for so long. Though there had been times during the winter where he'd hide away in the cottage for a bit, he usually kept in contact or visited the city frequently. He still had a job, after all. But right now? There were only two people that he had had contact with for the past three weeks. Was Skyler and everyone else alright at the City Noise? Kev let out a slight sigh but said nothing as he continued flipping through the paper.

Yes, yes. Judge Fear was oodles of fun when left out to soak for too long, much like a wet dog with a shaggy coat. "An umbrella or poncho will not be necessssary," replied the Dark Judge. Should a rainstorm indeed arrive and flood the Heartlands with a torrential downpour, Kev's training would unfortunately have to be improvised for the day. The word "unfortunately" was used with reluctance, seeing as how the alien would most likely catch a deathly cold and lose several crucial days' worth of training. They certainly didn't make them like they used to back on Law School, didn't they? A ghoulish hand grabbed one of the alien's colourful towels off its nearby rack and the kitchen no longer echoed with the sound of running water. It was just enough silence to detect Kev's sigh.

"Yesss, cadet?" Ah, Kev... You were quite the social butterfly, weren't you? No doubt the scaly alien was feeling the mental effects of self-isolation; he had never been one to revel in solitude. Judge Fear supposed, after some thought, that spending three weeks in one's home under a strict regimen could be... grueling. Though, really, it was nothing compared to patrolling around a lone building for several centuries.

Or surviving through one of the most merciless Law Schools known to humankind for fifteen long, trying years.

    But the ghoul digressed.

Out of politeness (read: better interest) the Dark Judge did not readily pry into Kev's mind, instead allowing for the alien to explain his thoughts with his own candid words. Trust and all that, eh wot?

No umbrellas or ponchos? The alien glanced outside for a moment and imagined exercising in the pouring rain. While sitting under a torrent of rain would actually be rather nice, it'd only be nice for a moment. Staying outside for hours on end, getting soaked to the bone and attempting to do work? That was going to be rough. A poncho or an umbrella could at least keep the two of them relatively dry. "Alright, sir." Perhaps Judge Fear had a plan. He always seemed to have a plan, and Kev wouldn't be surprised in the least if the ghoul wanted to keep it a surprise until the plan would need to be carried out.

The kitchen was silent for a moment as the water stopped running, though Kev peeked over the edge of the newspaper back at Judge Fear. "Mm?" Yes cadet what? The alien gave the Judge a slow blink before realizing that the Judge likely heard his sigh, if not his actual thoughts. "Oh..." He pulled the newspaper a little closer and ducked his head to level his eye contact at the paper, embarrassed. "It's nothing. I was...reading the paper and...wondering how everyone was doing out there. Zurg and Jo, Skyler and the others at the shop...Aya, the Hyruleans. Sonia..." The numb feeling he'd woken up with was replaced by longing. He missed going to the Sanctuary to meet up with people, he missed seeing Livewire more than once a week, he missed working at the City Noise. Kev fully understood why it was like this, knew that if more people came to the cottage and realized that Fear was here, things were going to get complicated and ugly, but he still missed them. The Kryptonistanian took a deep breath and folded up the newspaper neatly, placing it on the table and smoothing the creases out with his fingers.

"I'll get over it, sir." Training was important, these feelings were not important right now. They were only going to get in the way of his progress.

    "I'll get over it, sir."

"Mm..." That was an awful lot of yearning to simply 'get over'.

One minute became two, two became five, and five became ten. Not a single word was uttered from the Dark Judge's helm, not even a thoughtful noise, as silence claimed Kev's petite kitchen. Metus' panting had been the only source of distinguishable noise. But finally, after standing in front of the sink as motionless as a statue and seemingly out of sorts, the ghoul at last embraced their current reality. "They are fine," he hissed, returning to wipe down the alien's blender. Its dried components were set upon the counter top and cleaned to an immaculate grade. To a Judge, a single detail could mean the difference between life and death. "Fret not, cadet. Their mindsss are ssstill asss active and sssinful asss ever." Save for Miss Valentine's, naturally.

    0530.

Punctual right down to the wire, monstrously-large hands cupped themselves around Kev's breakfast bowl and brought the gritty mush to the table without incident. It took a bit of stiff maneuvering on the ghoul's part (his broad shoulders proved troublesome in these tight quarters), but the alien could now appreciate his morning meal. A glass of water was also provided, for hydration was quite important.

"You know the drill," rasped the undead fiend. Kev was undoubtedly well aware of the usual routine. Nothing else was said and Judge Fear left the alien to eat in peace, the kitchen once again lapsing into a heavy quiet.

A great big yawn overtook Metus' face and the dog rested his heads upon both forepaws, eyes roaming around out of sheer boredom.

Silence grew in the kitchen, as Judge Fear loomed there by the sink with nothing but a slight noise as his response. Taking this to be the end of this discussion, Kev turned his head to look out the window. Not that there was much to see without the sun up. Everything was silhouetted, besides the three of them, it seemed that everything in the area was fast asleep. As though they were the only ones that existed in the world, right now. Kev's eyes were roaming over the windowpane when Judge Fear spoke up again. "Huh?" Who was they? Again, he blinked at the Judge before it sunk in, the corpse continuing to describe that the others' minds were active. It certainly wasn't a long description of their daily lives or a significant anecdote, but they were active and they were fine. That coupled with the fact that Judge Fear had apparently decided to do a mental scan for their minds to settle his worries and fears...

"Thank you." It was enough for now. It was enough to satisfy the longing. A bowl of blended mush was set down before him on the table, as well as a glass of water. He had to admit, this mixture was actually not that bad. He'd gotten used to the taste, and found that he actually did enjoy having a 'meal' in the morning. Pulling his gloves off to set on the table, and sleeves rolled up, the alien nodded up at Judge Fear. "Yes sir. I'll see you outside in 30 minutes." The drill. Wasn't exactly a hard drill either. One hand slid down into the bowl, the other lingered near the glass to dip his fingers into the water. In silence, he consumed the mixture and the water, sometimes adjusting his hands and even switching hands, until both were emptied. He rinsed his hands off on a napkin and took the bowl and the glass over to the sink, washing them and drying them. Returning to the table to put the gloves back on, he left the kitchen and went outside, to the usual meeting place. It was time to start his exercises for the day.

    "You are welcome."

    0600, on the dot.

Kev came walking out from the cottage, light from the kitchen distending his shadow, and soon a familiar pair of ethereal eyes fixated upon him. A panting Metus was already by the Dark Judge's misty side. "Good morning, cadet," hissed Judge Fear. "It isss time for your morning jog. Metusss." The Great Dane only needed to hear his name once and off the dog went, breaking into a light, brisk strut. Come along, friend! It was time to venture around the property and see what wonders it had in store for today. There was no longer a dead thing under the bush (something had already gotten to it), but that's okay! Maybe they'll find something else? Now hurry before the master found reason to chastise!

Kev stood before the Judge and the Great Dane, ready for whatever his first exercise of the day would be. "Good morning, sir." Good, he was on time. The benefits of waking up early! The first exercise for today was a morning jog, which was pretty welcome at the moment. His legs wanted to be stretched. Kev nodded his head to his instructor before taking off in a light jog to catch up with the canine. As they began to jog around the area, several hoots sounded from the small woods behind the cottage. Kev gave the dark wooded area a glance but otherwise ignored the owls within, focusing his gaze straight ahead as his eyesight adjusted to the light. Frost crunched beneath their feet and Kev zipped his jacket up tightly, very glad to have his winter clothes with him. He cast a glance around the grasslands, which looked like they might need a bit of the rain the newspaper predicted.

As they hit the stone wall and continued their jog around the property, Kev made sure to take big steps that lifted his feet off the ground. Even though he could see in the dark, there was still a possibility that there were some rocks hidden in the grass, and he didn't want to trip. Not only would that take away time spent jogging, he could accidentally land in something gross. Keeping close to the wall, they jogged through the grass and the flowers, cut across the dirt road, and made their way back around towards the cottage. The muscles in his legs seemed relieved to be stretched out, the jog was rather easy to do, if not actually a little fun. A nice way to warm up for the rest of the day. The alien came to a stop around where he had first arrived, looking up at his instructor. He was ready for whatever was next.

    It had been subtle.

As the alien kept right behind Metus and the pair disappeared from sight, the Dark Judge allotted these precious fifteen minutes for contemplation. How long ago it had seemed... those first couple of days; the true beginning of a harsh, unyielding partnership. He could not forget the fire in Kev's eyes, the quickness of his sarcastic wit and the peppy bounce in his step. Ah, the youthful spirit... the defiant spirit. The first week had seen it bruised and the second had only worsened the blow. The third is what had made the agony sink further in, entrenching itself through aching wounds. Imagine, then, what the fourth shall bring? Judge Fear gave a thoughtful hum and looked up to notice their return, his psychic senses far quicker than his many eyes.

"At eassse," he hissed. Metus returned to the Dark Judge's side and rested upon his belly. Good boy, good boy... "It isss time for your ssstretchesss, cadet. I trussst that you know my inssstruction by now." How could the alien not? His list of exercises held little in the way of variation, after all. "Unlike before, however, we ssshall no longer focusss on a quantitative count. Your are able enough to do without."

Rickety bones snapped and popped, cartilage grinding in Judge Fear's knotted hands. "Do each exercissse for five minutesss, taking fifteen sssecondsss to regain your breath in-between."

The fourth week shall see him broken.

Kev stared back at his instructor, arms dangling by his side lightly. Ah yes, stretches. A timely part of his morning, but now that he had gotten used to them, they were not quite so tiresome as they once were. "Yes sir, I do." Indeed, how could he not? Three days aside, the past three weeks had seen his morning begin with these stretches. These physical exercises were like his bread and butter, to forget them was to forget how to dress himself when he woke up. The alien took comfort in this feeling of familiarity, only to stare back at the Judge as he decided to mix things up. No long would he have a number to achieve, now he would simply need to do his stretches for a set amount of time.

For a moment, Kev felt uneasy. He'd been so used to doing his stretches in a set way, getting used to them. But...but he could get used to his stretches all over again. He could get used to his exercises even with this time limit, right? Kev held his arms outward, parallel to the ground and with his facing downwards. First were the arm circles. He started with the small circle, arms spinning forward as he counted to 50 to himself. After he hit 50, he widened the width of his circles and counted to 50 again, and again after he hit 50, his circle widened to the largest it could get with his arm span. Again he counted to 50, and when he hit 50 his arms nearly dropped to his sides. Just before they could dangle to his sides, feeling as though they were weighed down with an anchor, they snapped back into their place, horizontal once more, and the alien repeated the circles, arms spinning backwards this time. Once he'd hit his third 50, he let his arms drop without question. Slumping, he took the fifteen second break and caught his breath. In truth, the arm circles were not quite so different, with this method. Doing each circle for 50 seconds allowed for him to do it all equally in the span of five minutes. Though the next stretch...might be harder.

His slight break over, Kev stood straight and set his feet apart, hands finding their place on his own hips as he begun to swing his right leg back and forth. Like a pendulum it swung, back and forth as Kev did a mental count, needing to remind himself occasionally that he was counting seconds, not sets. Once he'd reached the halfway point for five minutes, his foot found it's place on the ground again, Kev shifting his weight as he begun to swing his other leg for the time remaining. Once he'd counted down to the last second, his leg stopped it's swinging path and Kev hunched himself over to take his weight off of his legs, taking a deep breath. This was different. It was different and it was strange, but he was going to make it through. Just because things were changed up didn't mean a thing. He wasn't going to let it.

Comfort was a luxury, not a guarantee.

Kev's distress had been felt, though the Dark Judge saw little reason to address it. Sink or swim, cadet. The alien began with his arm circles first, as was proper. They were difficult but not impossible. Fifty seconds here, fifty seconds there... That's it, cadet, that's it. Pace yourself and complete the exercise. Mind over matter, pain is but an illusion. A pleased hum escaped Judge Fear's sinister helm. Now, for the leg swing. These were harder for one reason and one reason only: balance. Would the alien overestimate himself and tumble to the earth, or will he persevere and see it through?

Pacing, concentration, tenacity; all very good, worthwhile qualities. Qualities that had ensured Kev's completion of two strenuous exercises. There was no need to reward the alien; the bulging definitions rippling beneath emerald scales in both his arms and his legs were sufficient enough.

Testaments of his progress thus far.

"Continue," hissed Judge Fear. "You are far from finissshed, cadet."

Judge Fear was silent, as he usually was unless he made a mistake. A hum every so often, and those glowing slits in his helm forever staring. Cataloging progress. After three weeks it didn't intimidate him anymore. It was simply a fact of life, a fact of training. Seconds ticked by, and his instructor gave his hissing urges, yes...there was still quite a bit more to go, wasn't there. "Yes, sir." No sass, no sarcasm, not even a beg for a few more minutes of break. He knew the drill. "If I remember right, the next one is your favorite, sir." Perp squats. The Kryptonistanian stood up straight and adjusted his pose. His legs were spread far enough for a pair of shoulders to slide between his feet, toes of his boots angled outward rather than inward. Shoulders were lax, back straight as it could be, and the alien began to squat.

Again, he reminded himself that he was counting time, not sets. He almost wished he'd brought a watch so he wouldn't have to keep reminding himself over and over. Alas. He was not prepared. Down and up, knees moving only to accommodate the change in weight distribution, otherwise the lifting and and stretching was controlled entirely by his thighs. This stretch was a little different to do this way, as doing a few sets of ten like this was relatively fast. Up, down. Up, down. Corrections given in the pose, otherwise it came and went pretty fast. But now...strength training had been a major part of what he had done for the past few weeks, but perhaps this was a focus on stamina. Once he was well over his usual amount of squats done, continuing on as it had NOT been five minutes yet, his thighs were crying out. His fists clenched as he moved stubbornly through it. He had found some stable footing in his stretches, could do them without it being too much of a chore, and now that it was changed up, it was as if all of that progress had been for nothing. Pain was an illusion, and time was an illusion, even if time was working against him right now.

Five minutes, and he kept himself in a squatted position, hands on his knees to balance himself. His thighs were aching, but it was only temporary. It was temporary weeks ago, this would be temporary too! Of course, what about 3 weeks from now? What changes would Fear make to catch him off guard? No time to think. Leg lunges were next. Kev straightened up once again, hands folding neatly behind his head. Stepping forward as if he was about to take a knee on the grass, he kept his legs stiff, knee well off of the grass. Again, this exercise typically took very little amount of time to do, certainly not five minutes. Each time, he switched his legs, and every time the muscles seemed to throb or ache, his fingers knotted themselves into the fabric of his hat. Don't surrender. Pain was an illusion. Temporary. 43, 44... He could DO this, he knew he could. If he could do three sets of ten he could do this. 55, 56... Once he'd reached his fifth count of 60, he plopped a knee down into the grass and rubbed at his thighs. Temporary. Breath. This would pass. Just as before, it would pass.

Ah yes, his favourite: perp squats. That was true then and it was true now.

As with before, Kev had remained determined. Completing five minutes' worth of perp squats was no laughing matter, and neither were leg lunges. The Dark Judge had wondered, if only for a moment, about the alien collapsing halfway during the exercise. It was satisfying to be proven wrong. Five minutes steadily became ten and Kev knelt into the dew-laden grass. His thighs were no doubt burning. Best to take his mind of them, yes? Judge Fear knew just the trick. "Are you ssstill with usss? Good, good... It isss time for your crunchesss, cadet." And do you know how many you owe the ghoul on this fair day? "Give me one-hundred bicyclesss," he ordered.

Again, something new. Again, something Kev had not been expecting. He ought to detect a theme. Foreign imagery bloomed in the alien's thoughts and the extremities of his mind throbbed. The chill was strangely absent.

"Yes, sir." Despite Judge Fear's efforts, he was still with Fear and Metus. Crunches...yes, he remember how to do crunches. They were difficult, but otherwise they were alright--are you kidding me. The alien paused, in the middle of laying his back down onto the ground, to stare up at the Judge. A hundred bicycles?! He continued to stare even as the Judge fed Kev the images for how to perform such crunches, allowing the images to flow into his mind and feed him the information. Only then did he break eye contact as he assumed the position. Flat on his back...knees bent as though he were about to do normal crunches. Hands folded behind his head. Following the images as they played in his skull, one leg stretched outwards, hovering above the grass, and the other bent inwards as Kev inched himself up to touch an elbow to his knee.

Up, down. Criss crossing between his legs, touching his elbows to his knees, his fingers trembled as they dug into the fabric of his hat again, legs beginning to waver as he hit the twenties. He had to keep going-! His back was becoming sore from this position, shaking a bit more obviously as he hit the thirty. Ah-! His thighs felt like they were on fire! "Thirty-fo-!" Like a rubber band snapping, his elbow swung backwards and flat against the ground before he touched it to his knee, legs now following suit to flatten out against the grass. Panting, the alien urged his back to move again, inching himself back up to complete the 34th bicycle before his limbs flattened against the grass. His body was like one giant weight. The alien stared up at the sky, already flinching in preparation for whatever his instructor might say. "I-I'm just taking a breather, sir." It was an excuse, but his body felt like jelly.
