Cheeky little bugger, throwing in a salute... Not so cheeky anymore when told to repeat his set of thirty, however. "Keep it going, cadet, keep it going. You have jussst twenty-nine more to go." Were those words of encouragement? It was rather hard to puzzle out, but the ghoul had become mildly pleased with Kev's determination. And in a good way, no less. Push-ups not withstanding, the alien certainly had a lot of heart to give; not that this was ever doubted. Nevertheless, it was going to take a lot more than heart to survive and overcome these next three months. On the thirtieth lunge, Judge Fear rasped, "That isss enough. You have sssuccessssfully completed your exercisssesss for the day." Hooray! That had only taken about... what, an hour? Gasp, an hour! That means the -

Orange streaks blazed across the morning horizon, dawn's first light gradually awaking the sleepy world. It wouldn't be much longer for the sun to fully rise and then the alien's bones could finally be free of the chill. Looks like you got your wish, Kev. "Mm..." The Dark Judge, meanwhile, regarding the sun's timely arrival with little interest. "It ssseemsss that your foolisssh missstake isss about to be rectified, asss predicted."

    How saddening.

"Metusss." A command was given, unspoken and unknown, and immediately the Great Dane bolted for the cottage. In the next minute he returned with something wedged between his teeth, cylindrical in shape and brightly reflecting the sun's morning rays. Upon further inspection it was none other than a plain bottle of water, and the undead fiend removed it from Metus' mouth only to toss at Kev. "You have five minutesss for a mandatory water break," he hissed. Rest assured, friend. This was not something Judge Fear wanted, nor thought you truly deserved. You were, after all, late on your first day of training. "Sssoak up a few raysss and then met me around the other ssside. Don't have a repeat from earlier." You already know the punishment for tardiness.

The Dark Judge shambled away before sunrise fully broke, leaving a panting Metus to rest beside Kev and happily stare out toward the horizon.

The ghoul urged him along, and although Judge Fear was still watching him like a hawk, he didn't have as many critiques this time! Probably helped that Kev didn't tell Judge Fear that these ones were 'hard'...he'd hate to have that five second hold extended to ten seconds! Or even, gasp, a minute. Once the thirtieth lunge had been completed, the Judge asserted that he could stop lunging. The alien heaved a sigh of relief and stood up straight and at attention, only to look at the Judge with wide eyes. Successfully completed his exercises for the day...? Before he could comment on that, his attention was drawn to the horizon, where a bright yellow circle began to rise, rays spreading across the sky. Kev's eyes closed contently, leaning his body in the direction of the sunlight. The mistake of today was definitely not going to be repeated! At Fear's words, the alien made a small noise of agreement, but said nothing else. Either because he didn't want to mis-speak again or because he was enjoying the rest, perhaps even both.

Kev did open his eyes to look over at Metus curiously as Fear did...something? Telepathic for sure, because the dog suddenly ran into the cottage only to return with a water bottle in his giant mouth. It as then that the alien realized just how thirsty he was. Kev jerked and fumbled for a moment when the bottle was tossed his way, the bottle nearly slipping out of his grasp before he finally got a good hold on it. 5 minutes was enough! More than enough! With the command given to drink and soak up some rays before meeting Fear on the other side of the cottage, leaving Metus and Kev alone. The alien sat himself down on the ground and wrapped an arm around the dog. Though he did want to give the dog some affection, he was also leeching some warmth off of the dog's furry body. He nuzzled his head against the dog's silky black fur before he unscrewed the water bottle and took a glove off to dip into the water bottle and 'drink'.

The alien's muscles were throbbing from the workout, though it was a numb throbbing rather than any sort of 'pain'. The warmth from the rising sun and the warmth emanating off of the dog were both absolute rapture. The alien even let out a small trill of pleasure. The water also definitely hit the spot, making him feel less tired and more 'full'. Alas, he did not want to be tardy so after a few minutes had passed, the alien screwed the top back onto the water bottle and gave Metus a scratch behind the ear. "Good boy." Kev stood back up and did a quick stretch before he walked around to the other side where Fear was waiting.

    4:57...

    4:58...

    4:59...

With a second to spare and almost owing the Dark Judge yet another set of push-ups, Kev's noodly body stood in front of his instructor at expected. Metus arrived soon after, the Great Dane trotting over toward his master in an elegant gait before sitting back down. "Congratulationsss, cadet. You dissscovered the benefitsss of being punctual." More dry sarcasm. Hissing, the ghoul added further, "I do hope you enjoyed your warm-up, cadet, for now we begin your real physssical training. Drop and assssume the sssit-up posssition. You are to give me fifty crunchesss and I want them done ssswiftly. Metusss, if you will?" The dog at once retrieved the water bottle in Kev's hand and walked away with it, returning to his spot besides the towering Dark Judge.

Looks like there won't be another water break for a good while...

The alien came to a stop in front of Judge Fear and stood at attention, a happy look spreading across his face upon being informed that he hadn't been late this time! He'd actually timed that out quite well! "Thank you, Sir!" He didn't even care that the congratulations were sarcastic! Though the scaly alien soon blinked and tilted his head. "...Warm...up?" Those were warm ups?! An hour of stretching, pulling, tugging on his own muscles, and they were just warm ups?! At least he'd been given a break...letting Metus take the water bottle without complaint, the alien settled himself down on the grass and got into sit-up position. Feet flat, knees bent, arms folded across his chest...

Fifty of these, that wasn't too bad, right? Kev flexed his abs, attempting to pull himself up...and barely budged. "Hngh...!" Tulsit tulsit tulsit. He attempted it again, eyes closing tightly and feet threatening to lift up off the ground and make up for the difference. "Nyagh!" That time his upper back lifted an inch off of the ground before he plopped back down onto the grass, panting heavily. He was pretty sure that didn't really count as one...ugh, and he had to do these things swiftly. It was impossible! For a moment, the alien wriggled like a turtle stuck on its back, grunting and huffing all the while. Finally, after a significant amount of effort, the alien managed to lift his upper back off of the ground and back down in a proper crunch, though as soon as he went down he was back up again. Had to do it swiftly, and he had to make up for the time he spent struggling to figure out how to crunch! Pretty soon he had a nice rhythm going, though it was taking a lot more effort to do then he thought it would. Who knew crunches were so difficult?!

"You call that a crunch?" Can't say that ridiculing wasn't deserved, Kev. Your first attempt at performing a single crunch had been rather... well, dismal. "I've ssseen better Crunchesss in a kid'sss Halloween bag, cadet! Do it again and do it right." And so the alien did, at least forty-nine more times. A pathetic display, to be sure. But hey, after all this suffering and physical turmoil, Kev was going to sport a body to be proud of. First things first, however: he had to finish his crunches - his fifty crunches. "Let'sss go, let'sss go," the ghoul urged, broad hands clapping. "Thossse crunchesss ssshould have been done yesssterday, cadet." Could nothing truly please him? Turns out the answer was a little bit mixed; on the one hand, Kev finished his crunches and hadn't passed out. On the other, Kev hadn't passed out.

That meant the alien had to push himself even harder.

No sooner had Kev uttered a wheezy fifty and completed his set, Judge Fear was already on the offensive. "Roll over and assssume the posssition for pusssh-upsss, cadet. Give me twenty-five and keep the lip at home." Mm, mm~! Kev's favourite exercise.

Judge Fear wrote:"You call that a crunch?"

Yeah yeah yeah...he knew it was pathetic. "No Sir, I don't. It's not even a munch." Crunches in a kid's Halloween bag? Right, right, there was a candy bar called 'crunch'. Not that he ever ate any, but he'd handed out candy for Halloween so he was semi-familiar with Halloween candy. Again he did it, and this time it was worthy to be called a Crunch! Again and again he crunched, lurching forward and back. His chest was on fire! And there went Judge Fear clapping his hands and hurrying him along. "I'm going...as f-fast as I can...!" He gasped. He couldn't do it any faster, at least not without doing some terribly horrendous crunches again!

Eventually he hit fifty, the alien resting his back on the soil and taking in several deep breathes. Only to then be urged to flip over and do more push-ups. 25 of them. Over double the ones from last time! Groaning, the alien flipped himself over and assumed the position, palms against the grass and body lifted slightly off the ground. Though he did not move to do any push-ups, glancing up at the Judge. "I have to wait for your word to start, right Sir?" He wasn't going to make the same mistake twice in one day!

"What did I sssay about keeping the lip at home, cadet?" That alien, always thinking to push the envelope. When will he ever learn that Judge Fear wasn't someone to poke and prod? But kudos for thinking to wait on the Dark Judge's orders. It had been a pleasant surprise. "There'sss hope for you yet," he rasped, sounding just a smidgen pleased. Only a smidgen, as the ghoul was fairly hard impress. A cadet that can think quick on his toes and remember all the details, no matter how small or grand, was a cadet who wasn't scraped off the sidewalk like some gore-drenched putty. If the alien thought he was really going to be rewarded, though, then he needed to double check whose feet he was currently staring at. "On my count... Down." And so it begins, but at least this time Kev would not have to be holding any positions for five seconds.

Remember to listen for instructions and keep count, cadet!

Keep the lip at home...such an odd saying. In any case, the alien nodded his head stiffly, chin rubbing against the grass. "Keeping the lip at home, Sir!" Just ignore the fact that he didn't have any lips...and they were technically at Kev's home. Still, it seems he did the right thing in waiting for Judge Fear's go ahead! He couldn't help but feel pleased himself to make his 'instructor' pleased in turn! Even if it was just a 'smidgen'. No reward was expected however. Not so soon after the water break. Eyes moved from the rotten green feet to the not so rotten green grass, bracing his arms as he lowered himself down into the grass and kept up with Fear's instructions. As before, he counted his push-ups aloud.

Not having to hold his position was a definite plus, and the push-ups from earlier definitely helped! Though as soon as he hit the fifteenth push-up, he was beginning to get tired. His arms were beginning to feel like jelly again, exerting their tolerance for the push-ups of before. He didn't think there'd be such a big difference between doing ten of them and doing twenty five...a push-up was a push-up, right? His push-ups were becoming slower, arms shaking as he went down and pushed back up. There was no way he was gonna pass out in the middle of push-ups! Though afterwards was definitely a possibility.

Eh, those push-ups left much to be desired but they were, unfortunately, passable. "At eassse, cadet. You won't be getting any brownie pointsss for doing extra." Did you feel pumped yet, Kev? Did you feel like running a mile!? The Dark Judge sure hoped so, because that is exactly what you were going to be doing next. A sharp, piercing whistle split the air and Metus immediately stood upon all fours, ears pointed forward. "Alright, cadet. It'sss time for your morning jog," hissed Judge Fear. "Metusss will be keeping pace and I expect you to take no longer than fifteen minutesss. You are to run around your property, jussst once, and return to thisss ssspot. Pace yourssself, asss thisss isss a jog and not a sssprint. Metusss, if you would be ssso kind?"

Of course, barked the Great Dane! He shook his lustrous coat and began a light trot, the large dog occasionally glancing over a broad shoulder to see if Kev would follow. Well, friend? Let's have a brisk jog around the place and see all the things to see! There was a neat dead thing beneath a bush roughly halfway in... Maybe it was still there.

Would you like to see it!?

Brownie points, ooh those would be awesome to get. Wonder how he could get some of those? Shine his helm for him perhaps? Show up on time everytime? The idea was swept aside easily as the alien pulled himself up off of the grass, waving away dirt and stray blades before wincing at the shrill whistle. A ghostly sort of whistle, with a slight echo to it, sounding most otherworldly, it made his scales bristle just to hear it. His head snapped up and blinked as the whistle seemed to affect Metus, the canine up on all fours and at attention. "Morning jog?" He didn't recall reading about a morning jog, though just about everything they had done so far wasn't exactly 'mentioned'. Looking back on it, it seems Fear had left things pretty vague! Didn't want to spoil the surprise, no doubt.

15 minutes to run around in a circle around the property? The alien's head tilted before he glanced around the meadow, then back down to his furry running mate. Well, alright... "Sir, yes Sir! I will jog for fifteen minutes and return to this very spot, Sir!" Just to make sure he knew where to come to a stop, the alien dug his heel into the dirt and created an 'x'. The dog took off easily, trotting at a nice pace with his long legs to help guide him, the alien following behind at a steady pace. Giving Metus' dead thing a quick look, Kev was content to focus on his surroundings as he jogged, feeling pretty relaxed as he did. Probably helped that he wasn't running full speed.

The alien and the dog began their job with their forest at their immediate side. The creek that ran through it had large pieces of ice that had formed over the night, now melting in the light of the sun. Passing by the forest, they found the old stone wall, thick and sturdy. The fence of course was the line for where the property ended and errant wilderness began. Some frost lingered on the blades of grass around the edges of the property, and even some had crystallized at the bottom of the stone wall. The two kept their pace along the edge of the stone wall, kicking aside the grass in their wake. Thank the Gods for these sturdy boots! Along the wall and past the meadow they went, passing by the flowers but neglecting to give them a whiff. They had a time limit after all! Eventually they reached the wall's end, circling back around towards the forest and in the back yard once more. The alien's eyes peered downwards, searching for his little x and finding it with easy, hopping to a stop right on it and folding his arms behind his back. For a jog, that really wasn't all too bad! A nice, easy pace! Definitely not some sort of marathon, and using his legs for it gave his arms a chance to rest!

    "How'd I do, Sir?"

There was nothing like a brisk morning jog, feet lightly crunching into the earth and the sun's fledgling rays providing warmth for the exhausted soul. Delighted for a little activity and more than happy to accommodate his scaly friend, Metus kept a reasonable pace as he guided Kev around his property. All the fascinating things to be seen on this peaceful journey... The frost-covered meadows, the icy creek, the barren trees with their knotted branches, the sound the wind made as it whistled through this sleepy land... It was all very magical, but such was the life of a dog who found joy in life's simplest pleasures. The Great Dane stopped for a moment to sniff at the dead thing beneath a frozen bush, his wet nostrils fast at work. Aha, there it is! He barked once, excited, and resumed their light strut. There was no need to bother such a fat skunk any further, the poor critter having severely misjudged this year's winter.

    Crunch, crunch!

    Huff, huff...!

Such were the sounds they made, Metus' loving paws and Kev's determined boots. No rush, no anxiety, no constant threat of being judged... Just a nice, quiet jog around the property and the wonderful opportunity to run with an ease of mind. Such joys could not last forever, alas.

Eventually they had to return, the clock drawing near fifteen minutes, and a quiet whisper entered Metus' thoughts. He huffed once and quickly diverted their course, the dog obediently guiding Kev to his little 'X' in the dirt. There you are, friend! You are here and not punished. I am so happy for you! A pleased twinkle gleamed in Metus' eyes and he rested upon all fours, happily panting away. His part in Kev's training was over, at least for now. Guess that meant the alien was heading back to the grind...

Where an ornery Judge Fear was eagerly awaiting him.

"It isss time for your weight training, cadet," he hissed. Notice how the Dark Judge didn't acknowledge Kev's question. Instead, he rigidly shambled aside and gestured to the various tools of the trade: homemade dumbbells, a plain barbell, two large red buckets, unused black grips, a simple board with wheels, and two heavy-duty bands. Not the most complete gym experience, but it sure beat nothing else. "I hope your blood isss pumping, cadet, becaussse you're about to pump iron for the next hour and a half." Fun, right? A rotten foot planted itself onto a dumbbell, rolling it back and forth idly. "You will be working with the dumbbellsss firssst, cadet. Thessse are roughly ssseven kilogram weightsss (15lbs) and I will explain how to properly do each exercissse. When you are ready, cadet, pick up the dumbbellsss and await further inssstruction." Are you ready for a full half hour of getting to intimately know these dumbbells, Kev!? Here's hoping that the burning sensation in your arms afterward will be matched with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

The jog had been serene, enjoyable, and a welcome change of pace. Metus made for a rather nice jogging partner as well! The only downside was that the dog wasn't much of a conversationalist, but he made up for it by helping Kev figure out where his 'x' was, which earned the large dog several pleased pets and rubs. His attention turned back to Judge Fear, and the alien promptly stared at what the Judge had set up. He was so stunned, he didn't even notice that his question had been left unanswered. Instead, he squinted inquisitively at the assortment of what seemed like junk. "...Weight training." This was going to be the hardest one, no doubt about it. Though Kev again peered down at everything, unsure what it had to do with weights. The little handheld weights, alright that made sense. But the metal bar? The buckets? The black plastic thingies? The bands? And the skateboard? The only thing that was for sure, was that Judge Fear could make Macgyver envious.

An hour and a half. Oh yes, oodles of fun. His gaze went from the rolling weight back to Fear's helm as he gave his instructions. 7 kilograms? That didn't sound too bad! With a nod, the alien grabbed up the dumbbells, fingers curling around the handles. Yeesh, these were heavier than 7 pounds...and yet it wasn't too bad! Waiting for his instructions, he began by holding his arms out to his sides, palms and fingers facing inward. The alien exhaled as he lifted the weight up, elbow bent slightly. He raised them until his arms were parallel to the ground, and kept the position for few seconds. Then, inhaling, he lowered his arms back down. He continued until he had completed about thirty of them. It seemed really simple, as far as 'lifting a weight' went! A lot simpler then the next exercise they did. At first it seemed simple enough, it was a lot like the perp squats, just add weights. Except that every time he lifted up from a squat, he had to raise a weight straight up in the air, and he had to alternate which weight he lifted as he did so. It gave him significantly more trouble, arms shaking as he held the dumbbell up and nearly dropping his arms back down with every squat. After the second set had finished though, he had more of a handle on it, finishing the last set of ten without nearly dropping the weights.

The exercise after that was also rather simple, and what Kev was used to seeing these kinds of weights used for. With his palms facing the front, he lifted the dumbbell up and down. His knees had to be bent slightly, and his spine kept straight, which was easier said then done. Particularly when it came to the first few lifts, but the exercise came and went at a rather steady pace. Up and down, regulating his breathing, easy as pie! The next exercise though? It was different. For one thing, he only had to use the one dumbbell. Seemed easy enough...but then he went into position as instructed. Knees bent slightly, back curved, and both hands gripping the dumbbell by one of the weights on the end. And the actual exercise itself? "Eeh..." On paper, it was easy. Just put his hands behind his head and lift the weight up and down. But having a weight so close to his own head made him nervous, and the first few times he lifted the weight, he flinched, thinking he was about to smack himself in the back of the skull with the 7 kilogram weight! As such, he kept his arms as stiff as he could, and went about the exercise with a slow caution.

The exercise after that one was a return to using two dumbbells. His wrists held much like the very first exercise, he lifted the weights up to level with his chin, alternating his arms. The motion used to lift the weights reminded him of bowling with a specific type of curve upon lifting, rather than a dead weight sort of lift. By this point his arms were feeling like jelly once more, though the rest between exercises helped so that he wasn't overwhelmed. The last exercise, like the majority of the other exercises, involved both of the dumbbells. The starting position was unlike the other exercises however, with Kev needing to bend himself forward, both arms folded by his sides. The posture reminded him of the kind of pose one would take before diving into the pool. This exercise, he had to flex his arms backwards, moving his arms in a way that he had honestly never even thought to move them. Flexing the arms to fold near him, and flexing them to become parallel to the ground and stretch behind himself, Kev finished his sets and resisted the urge to rub at his arms. They were done with the dumbbells! Though there was still that weird pile of...stuff, to attend to...

Well pardon him for being an undead super-fiend hellbent on annihilating all life, Kev. Pardon him for not having the common sense to walk into the local gym equipment store to make the necessary purchases for your training - a training that he was providing for you. Besides, it's not like the Dark Judge was very elegant whenever he visited a market... Would you like to be responsible for the death of an innocent clerk on top of you aiding the genocidal ghoul in acquiring weapons of mass destruction? The very same weapons that were destined to ravish the world in nuclear hellfire and decimate all of its populace into oblivion?

    Thought so.

Improvised equipment made out of everyday household items will suffice just as well.

Surprisingly, Kev performed rather decently and completed his dumbbell exercises without any injuries. A pity, that. "Keep that back ssstraight, don't lock in your jointsss." And these were more "friendly" reminders; though the Dark Judge wouldn't be opposed to giving the alien a thorough tongue-lashing. In due time, in due time. For now he was content to circle Kev and inspect every inch of the alien's form, starting with his scaly head and right down to his shaky legs. Such a wimpy little thing... Kev would have never made it through Law School; perhaps would have bitten a literal bullet during his first year of training. Just as well, the ghoul supposed. Weakness could not be tolerated in a Judge, let alone a lackluster physique. He'll give the string bean an ounce of credit, though. Kev had a lot of heart - maybe too much - but it was carrying him through this. Otherwise? Tch, otherwise the alien would have dissolved into a blubbering mess by now, the ninny. Thirty minutes came and went, a rotten hand gesturing for Kev to finish his current set.

"Not bad, cadet, not bad. I had been expecting you to putter out halfway through," Judge Fear confessed. For someone who looked as if he hadn't suffered through a day of physical training in his life, this had been a rather unexpected surprise. Just meant that next week's training will have to be harder. Can't let the alien grow complacent, now, can we? "Ssset the dumbbellsss down and head over to that tree - the one with the knot in itsss trunk." Was no more than a ten second walk, really. As the alien was left to accomplish his task, that left the undead fiend to prepare Kev's next little bout of fun.

He was going to enjoy this one, oh yes.

And this was not referring to Kev.

Barbell in hand and so too the foam grips, Judge Fear slid them at Kev's shoulder-length and shambled over to the gnarly old tree. "Your next exercissse," he rasped. The barbell was then slipped between two very sturdy branches, thicker than Kev's trunk and by no means prone to breaking anytime soon. And should the alien entertain a few doubts or concerns, Judge Fear tugged down upon the bar as a gesture of good faith. It didn't budge.

"Alright, cadet. It isss time for your pull-upsss. Give me three sssetsss of ten. Ussse the foam gripsss for your handsss, not the metal." What oodles of fun! Feel like cutting off your arms yet, cadet?

Suppose a gangly corpse couldn't exactly hop down to the store and buy exercise equipment. Even harder would be trying to find a way to bring it all the way to the cottage. Nuking the world was one thing, but letting an innocent clerk be killed was too far! ...Granted, the nuking of the entire world wasn't exactly great either, but that was going to happen one way or another. The clerk still had a chance!

The advise given during the dumbbell exercises was heeded, the alien keeping his back as straight as he could and keeping his joints loose. The advise wasn't exactly wrong, after all. Kev may have completed his exercises but he didn't do it without a few mistakes along the way. Though after all of that work, he almost wanted to ask for another water break. He resisted the urge to ask for some water though, deciding to put it off a little bit more. As for Kev's progress, one didn't live through numerous disasters without learning to be stubborn and push through a whole lot of pain to get things done. He also really wanted to do a good job on his first day, whether for Judge Fear or for himself. Perhaps both. To prove to himself that he could do these things, and to make his instructor proud. After all, if he couldn't do some exercises, he certainly couldn't beat up Ridley, or kill Daemeon when he got to be closer to Kev's level of strength. So to learn that the Judge had expected him to putter out, the alien waved a hand, still holding onto a dumbbell, at him. "Not if I can help it! I'm not gonna putter out from some weights~!" Puttering out, not here! The dumbbells were placed down onto the grass, arms practically crying out with happiness at the lack of weights at the end. They almost felt a little weightless, yet somehow like a limp noodle all the same.

As directed, he approached the woods and looked for a tree with a knot in it. There were several trees in the area, but only one with a knot. What was he going to do now, climb the tree? Judge Fear came over with the metal pole, the black bits slipped onto it, and he slid the pole into two tree branches. It looked like some sort of...bar? Judge Fear tugged on it, the bar didn't budge at all, which thankfully meant it wasn't going to fall. Kev turned to the Judge quizzically. "...Pull-ups...right!" He approached the bar and reached up, grabbing the grips with a hard, steady grasp. His fingers dug into the foam, flexing his arms and aiming to pull himself up to the bar and tree branches! ...He did not budge. He strained, arms locking up. His arms bent at the elbow, but as for doing an actual pull-up? After a few failed starts and not a single pull-up performed, he glanced back at the Judge anxiously.

"Um...what if I can't do three sets of ten pull-ups, Sir?" He had a feeling the answer involved push-ups.

"Not if I can help it! I'm not gonna putter out from some weights~!"

A morbid silence eased its way into the backyard, like a slimy worm that burrowed itself deeper into the fertile earth and sapped the meadow of its picturesque beauty. In reality, it was merely the Dark Judge's cold, malignant aura; a familiar staleness corroded the air and a slight chill nipped at the alien's emerald scales. For the longest time Judge Fear stared at the alien, inhuman eyes gazing past flesh and bone to directly confront Kev's very soul. "We ssshall sssee," he hissed ominously. Indeed, cadet, we shall see...

Back to the present, where Kev struggled to accomplish even one measly pull-up, things were not so ideal. The alien had thought to try his luck by reaching for a thinly-veiled attempt at sympathy. There was to be none, for kindness had no place amongst the resolute. "Mm..." Nevertheless, this had been foreseen. Glancing at the wedged barbell and then back at Kev, the ghoul predictably shook that sinister helm of his. "No, cadet," he rasped, "you can do three sssetsss of ten. Ssspread your handsss far apart and form a 'V', do not fully extend your armsss." Was this a hard exercise? Yes. Pull-ups had been the bane of many a hopeful Judge-in-training, and even for seasoned Judges themselves. They were not, however, impossible. "Bring your chessst to the bar and keep your feet off the ground," came further elaboration. "Remember to breathe and control your movementsss. Try again, cadet. Let not physssical sssuffering keep you from your goalsss."

Hmm... A rather strange thing to say, though it doesn't look like Kev was going to be excused from his pull-ups anytime soon.
