"So this is the Stock Pot Inn..."

The Transistor's blade flickered as the tall redhead wielding it came to a stop just outside the aforementioned inn. That almanac from the library made this out to be a pretty decent place, and seeing it in person Red was not disappointed. Sure it might not be quite as glamorous as some of the luxury hotels Red had seen back in Cloudbank, but considering the place advertised free room and board it put even the middle-class motels to shame.

Well, no point waiting around outside. Red immediately stepped up to the front door and opened it, taking care not to let the Transistor strike the doorframe.

"Looks like they're still open. Ladies first? I'd get the door for you but... yeah."

As nice as the inn looked from the outside, the inside was even more impressive. Sure the sofas and armchairs weren't exactly on par with the brand-name custom furniture Red occasionally saw on showfloor events, but they looked comfortable enough, and they even had a working fireplace!

"Cozy! Just imagine what their rooms must be like..."

Imagination wouldn't be necessary for either of them before long. Taking care not to let the Transistor drag on the ground, Red made her way to the reception area and found the counter staffed by a boy much younger than she was expecting. Granted, given her experience with that floating machine at the library and the ominous comments it made about this city, let alone the fact that a place this nice apparently managed to keep its doors open without charging its tenants a cent, she wasn't entirely sure what she was supposed to expect, but still...

Feeling a little self-conscious, Red hefted the Transistor from her shoulder and held it upright in front of her. Since she herself was unable to speak, she would have to let her friend do all the talking for them.

"Oh, right. *ahem* Excuse me, do you have any vacancies left? We're in a bit of a bind and we're going to need somewhere to stay until this all blows over. You still offer free rooms, right?"

From the corner of his vision, Link caught something flickering outside. Now, now, flickering lights are nothing new; there were car lights, street lamps, all those talking and gaming devices people could walk around with and who knows what else. But as far his memories go, all those aforementioned lit up devices don't pulse a vibrant cyan colour, at least those that do don't pulse well... that big a glow?

So it was, that his curiosity was caught, hook, line and sinker and he turned his head in the midst of his preparations to close the inn for the night.

    ....

    ...

Link's jaw dropped open slightly and he stared. In fact, the young innkeeper was just one impulse away from dashing up to the window and plastering his face against the glass. A LIGHT UP SWORD!

    A. LIGHT. UP. SWORD.

His own sword glowed a bit in the dark, but this was something else entirely! This was proper GLOWING and PULSING and SHINING!

He did not stop staring at the weapon, even when its owner entered the building and started to look around. Then it talked. He had seen a talking boat and talking ponies, but this was the first time he had seen a talking sword. His eyes widened and the boy let out an indecipherable noise of: "Ah-er-um-eh?"

It took him a while to realise he was possibly being rude, possibly forgetting about the sword's owner, and most definitely staring. "Er, ahem," he sounded as well and tried very hard not to stare any more - a feat that was very, very difficult when it was the sword doing the talking.

"Um..." he sounded then fumbled around his desk for his writing tablet. He quickly scrawled a response on the tablet's surface with his fingertips. "Hello. I'm the innkeeper, Link. Welcome to the Stock Pot Inn. Yes, we have lots of free rooms across four floors. Is there a floor you'd prefer to stay on?"

As much as the innkeeper boy tried to hide it, his utter fascination with her Transistor did not escape Red's notice, and frankly she was having a hard time keeping a straight face herself. For once she was grateful for having lost her voice, otherwise it would have been much harder to keep herself from laughing at his brief adorable expression- she swore she hadn't seen eyes that wide since her last concert, on the faces of her most zealous fans in the front row seats as the stage curtains parted to signal the start of the show. She wondered what her friend in the Transistor was thinking, seeing this boy react with such awe to his unusual new body.

Fortunately for the man in the Transistor, he had no such expression to hide. Aside from lacking a face beyond the cyclopean gem on the Transistor's blade that served as his eye, he was less concerned with how the innkeeper was staring at him (a reasonable reaction given the circumstances, he figured) and more worried about getting his girlfriend a place to spend the night free of charge.

"What floor? Huh, I hadn't thought of that... Red, I guess it's your call: room with a view, or shorter trip in and out?"

Red thought for a moment, then held up four fingers in view of both the Transistor and the innkeeper. While she didn't hope to stay long, she figured she may as well make the most of her opportunity and take a room on the top floor, where she hoped to have a better view of the city skyline.

    "Fourth floor it is, then!"

    Seriously, This. Was. So. Cool.

Link watched as the sword glowed with each word it uttered. It rather reminded him of his pirate’s charm, but instead of a rock, it was a giant sword. He wondered if he would be able to lift a sword like that without the help of his strength-enhancing Power Bracelets. Maybe with two hands? Since it had a voice, did it mean it was magical as well? Would it reject him if he tried to lift it? Goddesses, it would be SO COOL if it was a talking magic sword that’s on FIRE. Can’t go on fire? No problem, Link has a certain red pyromaniacal fairy companion who could easily encase things in the magical red fire.

Then the woman held up four fingers and the innkeeper was forced to take a break from his wild imaginations. He blinked, then looked at the sword, looked at the woman, looked at the sword aaaaaand back to the woman.

“Aa?” he sounded then gestured at the woman, patted his own throat before making a giant ‘X’ with his arms and ended the pantomime with a questioning head tilt to the left. She… cannot talk also? It would be unfortunate if it was so, but part of Link was rather delighted to have another non-speaking tenant in the inn. Should he pass her a notepad and pen to write with? He did so, pulling a notepad from his drawer and placing it on the desk alongside a pen. While he was fetching stationery anyway, he also grabbed a form and set it on the desk as well after he completed a few lines on it.

The form listed the few rules and information of the inn and at the bottom, four lines:

    Date: September 20th, 2014
    Room: 429
    Name: _______________
    Signed: ______________

It took about a second or two before Red made sense of the boy's gesturing. At first she thought he was just being shy when he welcomed them via notepad after looking star-struck by the Transistor, but when he gave Red another blank notepad alongside the registration papers everything began to fall into place. He couldn't speak either!

Smiling with sympathy for the boy's condition, Red took up the notepad and wrote "No, I can't speak either" in response to Link's pantomimed question, then turned her attention to the registration form. It looked simple enough, rather standard rules of conduct for a place like this, all that was left was to sign her name at the bottom and they would be all set.

After she had written her name "Red" on the first line but before she could sign her name, she was interrupted by the Man in the Transistor: "Wait a second, would I have to sign my name on that too, or does this body just make me count as luggage?"

He should really, truly, honestly and genuinely feel bad to hear she cannot speak, because it was an unfortunate circumstance that it would be poor taste for anybody to wish on anybody. But he really, truly, honestly and genuinely cannot feel bad to hear it. In fact, he felt a bit excited and happy. No longer was he and Chell the only two in the inn who cannot utter a word. They now have another person! A new friend!

Nonetheless, he nodded understandingly and waited as Red signed her name on the form before he placed the cardkey to the room on the desk. The boy blinked a little as the sword spoke up about signing his name too.

With a chuckle, he shook his head in answer, then elaborated more in writing. “No, one signature from one representative of the room is enough. But if you don’t mind, we could take your name for record keeping purposes?”

He gestured at the form again for Red to fill in her sword’s name, trying not to seem too eager to find out what an amazing weapon like that was called - would it be ‘The insert-cool-name-here’ Sword or would it be ‘The something-in-here Blade’?

The innkeeper also started fishing multiple notepads from his desk and a good collection of pens as well. These he placed on the desk, beside the cardkey, and pushed it towards his new tenant. Take it! Take it all! You’ll need it! Is what he was trying to say with his smile and waggling eyebrows.

"Ah, fair enough, I guess." For a moment, the Man in the Transistor had considered remaining anonymous. To most people, he was just "Mr. Nobody", the man who kept putting off his Selections since graduation- the one man in all of Cloudbank who didn't seem to have a clue what he wanted to do with his life. Being reduced to a corrupt Trace for the Transistor to use as a Function certainly didn't help matters, either.

But then he got to thinking: that wasn't entirely true, was it? Red knew full well who he was, and more importantly so did he. He wasn't just a Function of the most powerful relic in Cloudbank, he *was* the most powerful relic in Cloudbank. And while he wouldn't mind having his old body back, if he could still be with Red, he wouldn't have it any other way.

"Hey Red, go ahead and sign that under-"

only then did he notice she had already finished signing them in as "Red and The Transistor", though for the signature she still just put that "--R" she always ended her OVC posts with.

    "...Yeah, that."

Red, meanwhile, was looking up from her signing just in time to see the young inkeeper boy pushing a veritable stash of notepads and pens in her direction. After a brief moment of confusion, her face lit up as she finally registered his intent. *How sweet*, she thought, as she mouthed a "thank you" and began happily gathering up the boy's gifts. While her dress didn't have any pockets, her jacket did, and she promptly began filling them with as many pads and pens as she could reasonably fit.

"Oh wow" the Transistor interjected "That's going to come in handy later, thanks kid!"

With documents signed and pockets filled with writing implements, Red finally collected their new room key card- strange, most rooms in Cloudbank simply worked on user permissions- and placed it in her front pocket.

"So, I guess all that's left is to go see our new room?"

Link mouthed the sword’s name as he read it off the page. The ‘Transistor’ - wasn’t that something that was in electronic devices? He wasn’t sure what exactly it was in a device, but he vaguely remembered seeing that word somewhere in relation to electronic devices. Does this mean the sword was an electronic device? Was that why it could talk? It was programmed to do so? Interesting! But how do you make an electronic device that thin, bash it around as a weapon and not have all the circuitry damaged inside its casing?

The answer was clear. Red and her sword came from a very, very, very, very advanced world. Link’s brows creased into a small frown. He and his staff all held a certain degree of pride in the inn, and for beings coming from advanced worlds, he always worried that the inn would appear… ‘plain’ and ‘boring’ in their eyes. Goddesses, what if Red and her companion sword openly sneer at the decor?

No, no, you are overthinking this, he told himself. The woman did not appear to be the type to show her displeasure in such a way. Actually, she seemed rather nice. The young innkeeper shook his head lightly to clear the thoughts from his mind and his smile returned, especially at seeing his new tenant taking up the offered stationery.

“Aa,” he sounded in agreement. Yes, all that is left is for them to settle in. “If there is anything you ever need help with, we would be happy to help.”

"Awesome. We'll keep that in mind."

The boy's brief expression didn't escape Red's notice- for a moment she wondered if perhaps he might have heard of the Transistor before, perhaps knew some bit of hearsay that she hadn't known?

Probably not, she thought. This place was supposed to be home to people from several different worlds, and it was unlikely that he was from anywhere near Cloudbank. If anything, he was probably wondering how you were supposed to pronounce "Transistor"- he did seem rather young to have heard of such things. The lack of sleep must have just been getting to her head.

Without further ado, Red hefted the Transistor over her shoulder, careful not to strike the Transistor against anything, and headed off to what she presumed was the stairs to the upper floors and, by extension, her new room.

"Thanks again, by the way!" the Transistor chimed in as Red gave a short friendly wave. As they approached the stairs, and presumably when they would be at least partially out of earshot of the boy, he added: "Well, free room and board, nice homey decor, and friendly staff- if this place only had an elevator it would be perfect!"
