    Not Alone

Post by Lucario on Sat Nov 29, 2014 10:52 am

    November 28th: 9:00AM

It's as if fate is against him.

The Lucario hoists his satchel higher on his shoulder, grimacing at his situation. He was with someone earlier, but he had decided to make it out on his own, be a presence of some sort of evil be out here or not. He feels a bit more comfortable in this area. A forest. Where the wild animals exist. At least he'll feel a bit at home. Jackal's ears fall flat for a moment, snarling quietly. This place is nothing but a mad house. He's not about to start liking it and it'll probably stay that way. His paws tread lightly upon the wooded floor, not breaking a single branch as he soldiers on. Maybe in time he'll find some sort of shelter with food around it. He's found a few berries and roots he could munch on, which he put most of in his satchel, but they were just sparse plants. A few poisonous mushrooms were behind him, one sniff already told him it wasn't the best idea to eat those.

The animals of the area were definitely aware of his presence, he could feel the small and larger eyes on him, each time something decided to trail him, he sent out a pulse of his aura in warning, normally deterring anything feral from simply attacking him. Something he had learned to do on his own. Jackal enjoyed not fighting at this point in his life. He'd just like to find some sort of peace, however rare that particular feeling is.

Looking up toward a rather large tree, he touches the bark and closes his eyes. His aura floods the area for a moment as he holds his pose, turning on the spot afterwards and jumping upwards, sailing toward the first branch. The Charizard wing bone clacks against the wood, and yet again he feels the eyes of animals on him. The Lucario grits his teeth and stands still, crouched on a lower branch, until the feeling of being watched passes. Jackal looks upwards and climbs, deftly sidling the tree until he reaches near the top. Finding a thicker branch, he lays his back against the trunk and slides down to sit.

Where is he even going? He has nowhere to go in the first place.

After a moment he pulls out his satchel, laying it on his lap. He pulls out something akin to a potato and mows down. The flakes of the root falling into his chest, he quickly wipes them away and looks down at his satchel. His Pokeball had fallen forward into his lap as well. He stops chewing and sighs.

Jackal stops eating, putting away his food. He holds the Pokeball in both front paws, rolling it back and forth. He looks up to the morning light. It's cold. It doesn't bother him in the slightest. Something like a smile graces his face as he remembers for the first time. Remembers the good.

Fate? Only if you believe in such a fickle thing.

It was not fate that brought a great evil to the hapless Lucario, but luck. Ah, there was no other mistress in all the universe that enjoyed teasing with her playthings... Perhaps she enjoyed observing randomness in motion, or perhaps she was of the more sadistic variety and took selfish delight in watching others suffer? Perhaps, perhaps not... Such natures were far removed from where it was concerned.

"Caw, caw, caw!" Wings of ebony clashed against the autumn colours of Kindle Forest, a feathery onlooker from beyond the trees having decided to rest and visit. Atop one of the many deciduous trees sat a raven, and with eyes of gold and a sharp penchant for mischief, it cocked its head to the side to better peer down at the strange creature far below. What be this fascinating but bizarre specimen? This black-and-blue canine? It had fur, paws, and by all means appeared as if a beast of these woods. And yet... it seemed as intelligent as a grown man, hands as dextrous as a skilled artisan. This was no mere animal. Ever curious, the raven hopped off its barren branch and glided downward. "Caw, caw, caw!" it cried again. The harshness of its macabre song pierced the silence, vermin knowing when to scurry and for how long. The raven cared not for them, however, and instead kept its inquisitive gaze drawn to the beast-man.

Could it be that the curious bird wished to see a trick, or possibly a shiny object desirable for its nest?

One will have quite a difficult time convincing this Pokemon that luck even exists.

However, hapless? It's to be seen. Jackal is weak, yes, but he is altogether aware of that situation. He is not a fool. In fact, his wisdom far surpasses his own 5 years. Okay, when you say it like that it's hardly impressive. Nonetheless, the point stands.

After a moment of reminiscence, he stows away his pokeball back into the satchel and looks along the horizon. The changing trees becoming bald, everything slowly shifting into the colder season. He can almost feel the desperation of the animals around him. Soon it will come. The Lucario stands on the branch, holding the trunk with his paw while his other rests on his satchel/bone sheath combination.

The Pokemon's eyes widen suddenly, and he growls softly under his breath.

    What is that.

His eyes close almost immediately and he guards himself, holding his bone club out before him and putting his back to the trunk. He only has to read out with his aura for a moment. That presence... It's different than the first one that showed. This one... He feels the curious intent. But definitely evil. Jackal sighs. Almost exasperated. Yet another powerful presence where he simply wants some peace.

He turns his head to the source, the black bird which calls out and scares the woodland vermin. He holds his bone behind him, defensively standing toward the bird.  He slowly lowers himself toward the branch, readying himself for flight.

Jackal is not about to lose his first data disc to a simple walk in the woods.

    How interesting...

Glistening eyes watched intently as the beast-man lowered itself to a more level height with the raven. "Caw, caw, caw!" it cried, keeping sharp attention on the over-sized bone. Did the beast-man think that a fight was soon to erupt, or perhaps that its life was in danger? Mm, maybe... As it stood, however, the feathery observer felt it unnecessary to make any sudden movements. It simply cocked its head side to side, tail rapidly flicking up and down. The usual antics and behaviour a bird was known for. That having been said...

As the intense stare down between beast-man and raven was underway, several more ravens had join the spectacle. First it was three, then it was seven, and soon it had become entire murders filling up these vacant, barren trees. So many all at once and from seemingly nowhere! The beating of their wings as deafening, but not to the point of unpleasantness. It was their shrill cries that were far, far worse. "Caw, caw, caw, caw, caw, caw!" did they all speak out, their many voices now one and as booming as thunder. Dozens upon dozens of golden eyes looked to the beast-man with vacant hunger, an infernal intelligence gleaming within them. Still nothing happened, though... The birds were content to merely stare, but not for long. Bold, the first raven to have met the beast-man's acquaintance flitted closer and darted from branch to branch. It stopped just before his feet, no more than three meters away, and turned its ebony head to the side. What came next ought to be no surprise...

What an odd specimen you are, rasped a coarse, husky voice. It sounded like cinders being ground into a fine powder, a false sense of security lovingly wrapped over hellish whims. Did it come from the raven? No one else could reasonably lay ownership, even with its beak firmly shut. That trick you did... the one with the aura... Tell me, why did you do it? Are you afraid?

A large, golden eye blinked, the raven patiently awaiting the beast-man's response.

Jackal's eyelids do not budge. In an unknown situation such as this, he has found his ability in auras far more useful than anything he could ever do with his other senses. He feels the ravens before they even appear, the presence of more of them coming closer, surrounding him. The feeling almost engulfs the Lucario. His arm raises his bone club slowly. Jackal's stance widens, and he lowers himself down to three paws on the branch. Holding his bone out behind him, he remembers the path he took. A getaway. A run he can definitely make. For though his moves have been taken away from him, his speed did not.

And Lucario is quick to flee.

The only thing stopping him is the intent of these beasts. Are they a flock? Or are they one? That is the only problem he is having whilst reading out with his aura. The sheer amount of them is almost overwhelming to his sense of smell and hearing, his long ears falling flat against his head in an attempt to drown out the noise. Jackal's claws dig deep into the bark of the tree, grounding himself for a leap before the raven appears before him, once again his aura picks it up quickly, but this time, he opens his eyes. He wants to be fully aware that this thing is speaking to him.

    And it does.

The Lucario's brow furrows. Odd? Of course he is odd, everything here is odd. Everything is unique. Being called odd is simply white noise to Jackal, but he focuses on the next part.

It felt his aura. Whatever IT is.

The closer the raven gets, the more he feels the presence. Such power... he is not even close to a match for something like this. And in any case he has no reason to fight until a threat is truly sensed that he cannot run from. But then, the bird being almost answers it's own question.

Standing up straighter, and without hesitation, Jackal's telepathic rings out as if on speakerphone.

One cannot know courage without first knowing fear.

The Lucario holds his position, waiting for anything akin to a threat... he doesn't want to leave this spot, he enjoys it so far. And unless this thing is vehement about him leaving or anything of the like, he's going to stay.

One cannot know courage without first knowing fear.

Upon hearing this, the raven twisted its head to the opposite side, its ebony breast ruffling and then quickly becoming even. So, you are courageous simply because you know fear? it asked, genuinely curious. Several long, agonizing moments lazily ticked by before the raven, along with its wide-eyed kin, released a deafening raucous cry. Caw, caw, caw! What an amusing thing to say! laughed the raven. It soon hopped this way and that, playful. There is much fear in this world that which the likes of it has never seen. Are you to tell me, beast-man, that courage is to save it? And here it stopped bouncing around, briefly pausing to sharpen its beak against the tree's aged bark. Do you believe in those words? Would you put your life down for them? it again spoke, seemingly never endless with questions. Again, it hesitated. And again it let out an amused cry.

Caw, caw, caw! I do not believe this to be true, though one could say that darkness cannot be without light. There is no light upon this world, however, just as there is no courage. There is only the depravity of man, and the sickly-sweet aroma of fear drenched upon their skin. Quiet now, it rustled its wings and idly began to pick out any unwanted parasites. Knowing fear does not make you courageous; it makes you cognizant. But would the beast-man agree?

He walks through the groves, blood slowly dribbling further down his hide with each step as he makes for the clearing. Ahead he senses life, a group, or maybe only two, his nose and ears are strangely unable to clarify further. The imprecise information his senses shoot into his brain irritates him like an itch he can't scratch.

Arro, a large limp boar slung across his back, prowled silently out of the woods and paused to look up at a lone tree and it's interesting inhabitants. His glittering eyes dance amid the whirling flock of corvids. Locking and shifting from bird to bird, his thoughts momentarily taking a backseat to predatory instinct. Then his rapt aquiline attention settles on the leader of the congress, an individual that through sheer charisma stood out from rest, uniquely composed and cawing perspicuously at a stranger in a tree.

The dragon had the sudden sense he'd stumbled upon a private conversation.

Even without the ability to sense auras something about the flock felt off, and not for how they had zeroed in on the loner. He'd known ravens to be territorial, but the way these two were intently gazing at one another warranted stranger phenomenon.

He flicked his gaze to the object of the lead bird's attention. Someone with the posture of a person, the body of a canine, but the color of sky.

His maw unhinges and a calloused voice is rubbed out by long vocal chords. "Hey, are you alright up there?" he carefully called. The deceased boar lolling across his back as he craned his neck upwards. The stranger looked untroubled, but something in the air, or something lacking in the air gave him pause.

The Lucario's eyes blur in and out of vision, his aura beginning to stretch to its limits. His powers are weaker than they once were, yes, but still he is not without his innate skill. This place is definitely confusing. It's as if he was only hatched not days before now. He regards the growing flock before him with a respect one would give a natural force, like a blizzard, or a hurricane. For that is how he feels in the presence of these ravens. If they even are that. He firmly believes yet another entity has happened upon him that really shouldn't have.

Then the raven caws in some sort of sick and twisted laughter at his comment. Jackal has never been quick to anger, but nor has he ever been patient...

No, not only knowing fear exists makes me courageous. But my words of sentimentality would be lost on you.

The Lucario simply turns on the spot, his back to the ravens as he comes to the trunk of the tree, walking slowly, and leans up against it in the crook of a larger branch.

I do agree, though, if one were to simply base that thought of light and darkness on life, then they would not know much wisdom at all. However my case is not such a circumstance. Jackal's aura flares out then withdraws as he has a personal thought or two about his hardened heart.

There is no light, there is no darkness, there is no good, there is no evil, there is no courage, there is only depravity; those who think in absolutes are close minded and doomed to fall due to their own blindness.

His thought is sincere, not trying to provoke the beast, but simply stating his beliefs. If you wanted something that Lucario would die for saying, ravens of fear, then you have got your answer.

Sensing another presence, the Lucario branches out his telepathic aura until he brushes up against a rather beast like consciousness. Another Pokemon? No. Nothing he's ever known. Then it speaks. He sends a private thought to the predatory aura below.

I do not know. I am amongst a being I do not understand, but it's intent is clouded, but certainly not... good.

Jackal leaves it at that, keeping his composure.

Sentimentality... quoth the raven. Its words were a sickly-sweet honey, sired in the purest of waters and bathed with the gods themselves. Nevertheless, a foul poison lay deceptively beneath its alluring surface. The universe does not abide by sentimentality, nor the subjective morals of the immortal soul. Fluffing its ebony breast and yet again snapping its head off to the side, a curious golden eye continued to remain fixated on the beast-man. Absolutes? Hmm, absolutes, yes... Though you must agree, beast-man, that the universe is either one extreme or another, never in-between. Life and death, light and darkness, therefore I am and therefore I am not. Is it blindness to realize this unfeeling truth, beast-man, or is it divine transcendence into the Kingdom of God? Here the raven paused, allowing for its guest to further digest such metaphysical speech.

An interruption came in the form of another soul, a dragon, yet the murder did not immediately heckle this new emergence of life. Since time immemorial I have existed and so shall I well past the concept of time itself, spoke thee, the one who dares to question. What you claim I have heard many a time before, thousands upon thousands of lifetimes plummeting into a universal tragedy that is as flawed as it is doomed to repeat unto eternity. You think therefore you are, and so shall I lord dominion over all of life's creatures.

This was the truth, so it was written before thought developed awareness.

But enough of this chatter, for there came another soul into the mix. The raven, for whatever purposes, gazed down upon Arro and spread its broad wings. Company for you, another paradigm for you! did it cry. And thus the raven and its cackling murder flew, the beating of their wings deafening and the body of their mass blotting out the sun.

Farewell to the courageous man, farewell to the sentimental beast! Farewell, farewell, farewell!

    Farewell, farewell, farewell...

Continuing posting if you wish, Arro!

The Lucario stands undeterred from his spot. More words come from the odd raven, but in all honesty, it hardly hits home for the rather simple being that is this Pokemon. Or in any case it simply isn't a harsh enough argument for Jackal to see it as something to think upon. His worldview is very unshakable. Beings of absolute power and infinite knowledge are beyond him and he can only control his actions, why he would argue a point with someone not technically on his plane would be beyond him. He listens, though, absorbing the thought process of this entity and basically dismissing anything that simply doesn't mean anything to him. The Kingdom of God doesn't even make sense to the poor Pokemon.

He shifts his position, uncomfortable still to be surround by this... thing around him that is taking the form of ravens.

As the being leaves, he simply raises his gaze toward the heavens to make sure the creatures leave. Good. Now he only has one something or other around him. Far better than hundreds of something-very-evil.

He takes a quick step downwards, jumping from branch to branch until he was simply right above the large lizard creature, he lets a single thought off in the newcomer's direction.

I think you may have scared whatever it was off, for that I thank you. Who might you be?

He holds the Charizard wing bone beside him, still unsheathed. Jackal's head cocks to the side... This very much looks like a dragon type pokemon before him... however... very much different.

It seemed his appearance wasn't something the flock had anticipated, or desired. The black cloud vanished in a whirl of feathers and claws and the two were alone in the woods, save for it's humbler ambient residents.

    Another paradigm?

The slim dragon watched them go with twinkling eyes, curiosity raptly attuned to the sight, and only broke his steady gaze upon feeling the touch of another's mind on the boundaries of his own. The blue hound, he felt the same in thought as he did in sight and smell.

    So it was telepathy.

He could recognize someone by the feeling of their thinking the same way he could do for another drai. Which was newer to him, maybe a side effect of being in a place where mental communication was more common. He could feel his gray matter stretching every time he was within Kev's presence and the same aching relief washed over him again as the hound spoke.

I think you may have scared whatever it was off, for that I thank you. Who might you be?

Arro nodded in acknowledgement and spoke aloud, it came more naturally to him and he was less keen to invite another into his mind to try and read his banter. There were things in his head he didn't necessarily want to advertise.

"Mmm. I find crows more pleasant conservationists when they stick to cawwing..."

He paused for a half second, internally debating something and listening to the wind and the beating wings of more mundane feathered fowl.

"The name is Arrogath, and you?"

His voice was dry, harsh, but soft and lyrical and the name he gave came pre-anglicized. It was too funny listening to others trying to think or speak it unless he gave it that way. Some things simply couldn't be said unless one had the anatomy and habit for it. His own human words by example were sharp and craggy around the edges and came not without strain. But something made him linger and answer. Though he was inclined to be on his way and store the meal he'd procured, his curiosity begged him to stay. A flock of telepathic crows isn't something one finds every day afterall, even here.

Or maybe he was just lucky.

Jackal's movements were few and far between in any case, most would find it very eerie for something to be so still. He was once even mistaken for some sort of model in the days in Hoenn... But now, the situation before him has reenacted those instincts. If the dragon had a lesser sense of smell, he probably would have a hard time trusting his eyes that the Pokemon before him was actually living.

Jackal must be a bit shook up.

His first movement was an all but unnoticeable flinch at the start of the lizard's speech. His reading aura feeling the intent, so blunt, but wise. He'd rather not even try to get into anyone's mind, just simply speak to those that wish to hear and feel the outward aura of those he finds necessary to read. The Lucario bends to one knee before jumping all the way down onto the ground. Standing up straight, Jackal stows the dragon bone on his back.

I don't believe those were crows.

The look on his face was one of dread.

Oh, and you may call me Lucario.

Jackal eyes the boar, knowing full well the procedure for hunting and gathering, and sends another thought towards the larger being.

I apologize if I intrude, but do you mind speaking with me as you travel?

Something about THIS predator was far more calming than the erratic aura from before.

The corners of his maw up-ticked in an amenable grin, the smile just failing to reach his eyes, "You're probably right about that".

Not real ones in any case. The smell was intangible, the heat tenuous, an illusory mask for a reclusive someone or something to wear maybe... It wouldn't be surprising. He'd seen it done before.

I apologize if I intrude, but do you mind speaking with me as you travel?

"Not at all, my destination isn't far," he replied in open honesty.

Lucario must be new, the apprehension in his thoughts was obvious and on Arro's list of disturbing things he'd witnessed in the Breach this barely registered. If he could give some comfort to the hound with his presence he'd gladly oblige, conversation was short out here and company would be a rare change of pace. Realistically it would be wiser not to lead a stranger to one of his hideaways, but Arro didn't sense anything malevolent exuding from Lucario, at least not at the moment. If that should change he was confident in his abilities to correct the mistake.

"Good to meet you Lucario. So, is there a purpose to your visit here, or are you getting your bearings?" he said idly in his trademarked rasp.

Lucario looked equally the type to be at home in the endless forest as he did someone with an ulterior destination. The blue being was calm and exact in his movements and messages, not unlike drai or other sapient creatures whose roots were embedded in the survivalists existence. Arro found his composure comparably familiar rather than unusual.

Arro continued across the clearing to where the trees again began to cluster, the boar still rocking slowly back and forth atop his back, but never threatening to slip thanks to the cradled wings that bore it. Ahead lay multiple thin crisscrossing trails, worn by the native life rather than bushwhackers, they spread out like spider webs beneath the green grove but Arro stuck to the widest most straightforward route. A few signs, an old footprint preserved by dried mud, a half buried scale, indicated he'd traveled this way before. Some life quieted and fled at his approach but most of the smaller creatures had learned they were too much trouble for too little reward to be endangered by the scaly red creature and his associate.

Jackal's mind slipped into a quiet trance as the dragon type spoke. As the words so craggily left the mouth of the drake, Lucario's head, in a very canine manner, slowly turned to the side. His already sensitive hearing assailed with new noises as he starts to actually listen and return his area of sensing with his aura down to simply him and Arro.

As Arro expresses the courtesy of a simple greeting, the Lucario nods politely. He steps forward toward the dragon with a bit more confidence as he doesn't sense the impending doom of being consumed by a larger creature. Step one to not dying, look for things that don't kill you. Easy sounding, but apparently in this neck of the universe... not so much. Jackal's eyes look up toward the taller being as they begin to walk, but his head does not swivel.

You could say I am scouting, and also gathering my bearings. The humans and others like them aren't very helpful to me considering where I am and how this place is. I've been running for quite a long time, trying to escape the ominous presences of the forest and simply survive. However... as you probably can feel, I have an ability that allows me to feel their intent and powerful presence. I do understand that this place is called Portal Breach... but naught else makes sense to me.

The Lucario soldiers on, shrugging his shoulders to replace the satchel back around his neck area. His aura reaches out to the creatures of the area, the more receptive could feel the Lucario's presence, possibly even Arro.

    Lucario feels like a hunter.

A very practiced, and dangerous presence in general.

However the Lucario has hidden his instincts and intent due to him knowing full well that he is incapable of performing his abilities anymore.

His eyes roll towards the heavens as that very thought again rings in his head. So many years wasted.

The grove they wandered into didn't stay open and airy for long. Soon the massive trunks crowded closer together, the space between them taken up by younger trees of willow and aspen, all engaged in an arms race towards the sunlight. Arro switched tracks to a slimmer trail, almost indistinguishable beneath a choking swathe of ivy that coated an approaching hill and swarmed over the surrounding trees. The going was steep but the trampled plant life provided plenty of footing, or tripping points if you strayed from the meager path.

Arro hummed in reply, not really betraying much in his tone besides affirming his interest.

He'd say he had similar... abilities, but the drai had never really considered them anything out of the ordinary. He payed attention, a skill he'd learned would save his skin more often than a word or well placed cut, and something honed over mental exercises handed down from his teachers. A smell, a look, a sound, breathing and the feeling of life, like charged particles in the air, information was everywhere if you knew how to find it. Though not everyone was born with the equipment necessary for picking up the more subtle traces of life.

Paying attention to Lucario, he could feel him reaching out with that same probing sense of observation. If not identical to his own then something similar.

He nodded to the latter half of his statement, then addressed the former, "The people here, most of them, are all loners at heart. Not a lot play well with others unless dire straits bring them together. And we've all lost things in the process of getting here. I think the veterans forget that from time to time, and find newcomers an uncomfortable reminder of that fact. Don't take it too personally."

The grade of terrain remained consistent for several meters as they moved deeper into the woods. Sun spotted boulders occasionally peeked out from the ivy, offering better stepping points and higher points of view. The sounds of a small stream could be heard trickling in the distance.
