    Were It So Easy

Post by Rasa 'Jeqkogoai on Sat Nov 22, 2014 1:06 am

    Time: Afternoon
    Date: 11.15.0005

Heading to Central Park had been a relatively uneventful adventure and it was more sightseeing than anything else. From his employer's shop and out of the Business District, Rasa 'Jeqkogoai led the general down the many twisting, turning streets of Portal City. Soon the air became thickly saturated with extravagant spices, and on both sides of the boulevard there were citizens of every make and size. Several of them were no doubt waiting for the local bakeries to showcase their fresh goods. The same was true for the various bazaars and flea markets that enticed curious denizens. All along the path were colourful merchants with their exotic wares; creatures for sell, foreign delicacies, and even items the Sangheili florist could hardly comprehend. Portal Breach literally had everything! Except, of course, other Covenant forces.

    Until now, that is.

Harsh asphalt was exchanged for cool grasses, and the overflowing markets transitioned into wide areas of open, quiet spaces. Deciduous trees, no doubt from the humans' homeworld, dotted the landscape and provided shade from the high afternoon sun. Up ahead were benches, a few of them occupied with leisurely individuals or cooing birds. Pigeons, he heard humans call them. Rasa 'Jeqkogoai was never fond of those rats with wings.

No noisy vehicles disturbed the air here, nor was there loud talk from those who strolled these peaceful sidewalks. This was Central Park, and it was here that the Sangheili could at last halt in his escort. He stopped upon one of the many grassy knolls and turned to face the general unimpeded by third wheels or prying eyes. "We have arrived," he stated simply. A cool breeze passed through the area and Rasa 'Jeqkogoai took a moment to study it traveling across the many blades of grass. "You may speak freely, general. No one will dare intrude on our conversation; not so young in the afternoon and in broad daylight." Not even Ridley, that cybernetic menace, would make a second appearance so soon.

As with before, Rasa 'Jeqkogoai allowed 'Vitume to have the first word in their discussion.

It was a relatively quick walk to Central Park. No discussion happened during it. Many different smells wafted into his nose, some distinctly human, others not so much. When they arrived at Central Park, 'Jeqkogoai led him past trees, benches, and annoying birds. They eventually arrived at a somewhat secluded area and a breeze swept through the area. It seems 'Jeqkogoai was allowing him the first word. What would 'Vitume say? He was known to be blunt sometimes, yet he also knew when to start soft. What of 'Jeqkogoai, how would he react to this news? Would he lash out and strike something, or simply have to lean against a tree. He would start with what was easiest for him, although not easy per say. He would start with the reason for the Jiralhanae's betrayal. "It was the Prophets who ordered the Jiralhanae to attack the our people." With that, 'Vitume looked hard at 'Jeqkogoai for his reaction, ready to restrain him if necessary.

Vitume wrote:"It was the Prophets who ordered the Jiralhanae to attack the our people."

Out of all the possible things he had been expecting the general to address, this had not been one of them. The Prophets, interpreters of the gods' holy relics, were to blame for the Jiralhanae's treachery? "...And you are positive of this?" By no means did Rasa 'Jeqkogoai wish to question the general's gathered intel; it would explain why 'Vitume had dropped the -ee suffix and why he had behaved so leniently while in Tally's presence. But to hear that the Prophets themselves had orchestrated the Great Schism? For what ulterior motive could they have foolishly believed worthwhile for the Covenant's division?

The Sangheili swordsman neither reacted violently to the news, nor did he fall upon his knees out of shock. Instead, his mandibles briefly fluttered before growing still. To keep a cool composure was a necessary and respectable skill. "I had known that the Prophets and our people were once at war," Rasa 'Jeqkogoai spoke. Should a treaty not have been reached between the two disagreeing factions, both the Prophets and the Elites would have earned nothing but an interstellar massacre. "But I also know that we were to serve as the Prophets swords, while they were to be the keepers of the gods' will. Tell me, general... Why did the Prophets betray us as they had? Were they not pleased with our military prowess?" That... surely could not be, for there was little the Sangheili had not bested in combat and spatial warfare. The humans Rasa 'Jeqkogoai could see as admirable foes and worthy of Sangheili acknowledgement, but the Jiralhanae? Bah, mongrels that relied on lowly guerrilla tactics and barbaric practices. Brutes was a fitting name they had lived up to.

"And what of the Human-Covenant war?" the warrior urged. "Had it reached a conclusion, or was it still raging hotly while you were serving before your transfer to Portal Breach?" Above all else, Rasa 'Jeqkogoai must know what happened during his absence. Just how long had he been removed from his universe's timeline...?

'Jeqkogoai had taken it better than he thought he would. The General himself has not known why the Prophets betrayed them. Was it perhaps because the Sangheili were close to discovering the truth about the Great Journey, or perhaps something else? "I do not understand why the Prorhets did this, nor any other Sangheili I have conferred with knew, it is but a mystery to me.
'Jeqkogai wrote:"And what of the Human-Covenant war?"
Ah the war end of the war, oh so simple and yet oh so complicated. He was not sure how the swordsman would take Sangheili and Humans standing together, but he still deserved the truth. "The war ended nearly four years ago, with Sangheili and Humans standing together."

    Nearly ended four years ago...!?

That was almost more shocking than the apparent fact that humans and Sangheili had reached a standstill! Rasa 'Jeqkogoai absolutely cast all memories of a deceitful assassin from his memory and vied to reach the bottom of this. It just wasn't possible that things between the two forces were rosy, or that they were acceptable enough to start sharing cultural knowledge. No, this wasn't the end to the civil war. There had to be opposition somewhere! "Forgive me, general, but I highly doubt that all of our brothers were content to mingle with the humans," came the swordsman's respectful, but disagreeing, remark. "And I extremely doubt our two peoples came together and pardoned all wrongdoing. Hundreds of thousands of Sanghelios' proud sons perished during that war, and the humans suffered similar losses. It would be naive to think that our differences have been permanently set aside."

Rasa 'Jeqkogoai would be better able to react by knowing more information, but so far he remained cautiously skeptical. Though not as bigoted as some of his superior officers had been, the Sangheili wasn't going to assume a single fact to be truth until 'Vitume explained more.

'Jeqkogoai was smart, that was for sure. 'Vitume didn't blame him for not believing it, he didn't believe much of it at first either. "No, not all of our brothers fully accepted this. A splinter group who call themselves the Storm Covenant are still attempting to activate the Halo Rings. It is also true that there is some tension between our races, but the human leaders as well as The Arbiter are attempting to make peace." It was going better than the Sangheili General had first thought. Many of the human leaders were at least willing to negotiate and The Arbiter was being respectful to them. Of course it seemed none of that mattered now anyway, there universe is seemingly gone and only two Sangheili survived.

"Storm Covenant..." He found these words... unfamilar, alien. But he also found them right, as the more fanatical members of their proud race would not be prone to simply forgiving the humans for their transgressions. In this, the assassin was yet again proven wrong. Rasa 'Jeqkogoai felt strongly justified. "So the human leaders and our Arbiter had been attempting to forge peace treaties?" Not entirely unforeseen. From what the Sangheili could remember, the Arbiter had been one to journey with the Demon on numerous perils together. What bonds had they shared? What inner doubts and fears had they conquered? If the Demon and Arbiter could forgo their hostilities for the greater good, so too could both humans and Sangheili. With the proper steps first and foremost, however.

Though he missed his kind and world dearly, Rasa 'Jeqkogoai found himself more at peace knowing that things had not entirely gone pear-shaped. Sanghelios was in the midst of a civil war in Vitume's timeline, which only meant in Rasa 'Jeqkogoai's that his would have most likely followed. Or had they been from the same continuity?

Time shenanigans had always been difficult to comprehend.

"I thank you for divulging this information to me, general," he rumbled, grateful. "I had many concerns as to what had happened, but your words have brought me serenity. Please, if there is anything you would like to know about Portal Breach, ask and I shall answer to the best of my ability." While not a most active member of the Breach's community, Rasa 'Jeqkogoai had weathered enough trials and tribulations. He knew his fair share of intel, just enough to help 'Vitume better understand the confusing, bizarre world he would now call home.

    ((No worries!))

While 'Vitume had more to tell the Spec-ops, but that could wait till later, when he himself was more, accepting of what had happened. First it would most likely be a good idea to know the lay of the land. His tactical mind had already noticed possible choke points, likely ambush spots, and seemingly good defensive positions if there were to be a battle. A map would help that he was sure of. He would also need a place to stay. If he remembered correctly, 'Jeqkogoai had mentioned an Inn he could stay at that didn't charge for basic necessities. "You mentioned an Inn I could stay at before, did you not? I do not know where it is, could you guide me." He said the last sentence as more of a statement of what's going to happen than a question. He could wait until he got settled in and... to terms with the fate of Sangheilios.

The general was right down to the point. Good, because it was better to capitalize on the situation than it was to simply let it fester. Rasa 'Jeqkogoai did not refuse 'Vitume's request and nodded, replying, "Yes, I did mention an inn. It is not too far from this location. Come, I shall escort you there and introduce you to the staff." They were an amiable group of outsiders, devoted to their work and attentive to obedient tenants. Perhaps the general will spend a little time getting to know them?

With nothing else to discuss at the moment and daylight burning, the Sangheili began to leave the soothing confines of the park for the more busy, hectic streets of Portal City. Another fifteen - twenty minute journey by foot will come and go like the afternoon breeze.

((Going to make a thread at the inn. You can post one last time to this one, if you'd like.))
