Lightning crackled and split the air, the smell of ozone striking. More blood, more agonized shrieks from the creature below. Again the sand quaked and your monstrous attacker violently erupted from the safety of its cover. It was deceptively bigger than you thought, and as it stretched its neck to the heavens, gaping maw wide and stubby appendages exposed, it then... fell.

    BAM!

With a noisy and thundering crash did the beast once more descend beneath the earth, tail lashing out in wild abandon. Another shockwave resonated from a distance over, its ripple clearly seen in the grains. You were naturally knocked off your feet at the seismic blow. And your stubborn opponent...

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

It stared at you with its head and neck partially above ground, the angry intelligence within its opaque eyes glaring. "Hnngh... Hnngh..." What was it doing over there, brooding like that... Your curiosity was soon satiated as the behemoth reared back its head and howled. From the hollowed cavities nestled on the sides of its plated heads were fired projectiles; you didn't know what they were and how they were produced, only that they were ejected with the force of a ballistic missile. My, this thing was just full of surprises, wasn't it? That was enough reflecting, however. Those bombs were spinning right toward you!

Again, Grodus's spells struck home, yet more crystals shattering and monster blood being spilled. The strange beast threw itself the whole way out of the sand this time, screeching in pain before collapsing to the ground. The mage was a bit surprised; that thing was easily the size of one of the dragons back home, if not even more huge! And here he was fighting around with it on foot... perhaps not the smartest of ideas, but he had little choice currently.

The thing went back beneath the sand in short order, thrashing around with its tail. The quake it caused knocked the technomage off his feet in an instant. Before Grodus could even get to his knees, the monster popped its head out of the sand again, eyeing him angrily. The same screeching from before, and a few of it's growls... what in the world was it doing over there, anyway?

Grodus got his answer soon enough, the monster letting loose a howl and then throwing its head back to launch two strange projectiles out of those tubelike projections below the horns. Bombs, missiles? He didn't care what they were, he just turned to try and outrun them!

Unfortunately, the bombs seemed to home in on whatever target the monster shot them at, so there was no outrunning them completely. The first one struck the sand and blew up a few steps behind him, the second one damn near landed on him, the explosion sending him flying again.

When Grodus rolled to a stop after his latest experience in the air, he tried to stand up but ended up wincing and then dropping to his knees again. Ugh, he couldn't take too many more of those...

While he probably could survive fighting this thing on foot, there had to be an easier solution. A reflection of light from above caught his eye for a moment, and he looked up to see what it was. It was the sun, reflecting off the targeting scope of one of the turrets on the nearby command post. Oho, four really big guns, and since the monster ate all the mercenaries, the path to them was clear!

Nope, not dealing with this thing the hard way if he didn't have to! Grodus pulled himself to his feet yet again, no longer charging at the monster, but turning tail and heading for the command post. This time he tossed a few ice spells downrange, hoping to slow it down a bit while he made a beeline for those turrets!

Oh no you don't... Whatever malicious intellect in the beast's eyes glared, teeth like spikes gnashing and spit dribbling from its gory mouth. It knew, just as you did, what those four large turrets were capable of. Preparing, the creature lowered its monstrous head close to the earth and began to inhale generous amounts of air. Soon, little morsel, soon...

You, meanwhile, had scampered off into the mercenaries' command post and thought to put your great big head to use. Except there was a problem, of course. Do you remember you old pal, the Anti-Interference Program? Well, it sure remembered you, and the master controls console pulsated a venomous red. After its ignominious defeat and its pylons, it naturally had no love for yourself and whatever it was that you so desperately came in here to get. The console sparked with a crackle of electricity as the AIP began to put up a valiant defense. If you wanted to use those turrets and their armour-piercing rounds, much less send that giant beastie to the high heavens in chunks...

I Remember: the AIP hasn't forgotten about you, technomagus! Incensed, it won't allow you access to the controls unless you do one of the following:

A): force your might upon the insolent program and assume direct control ; flip a coin
B): sweet talk the disagreeable thing and hope for the best ; the better the IC argument the better the response
C): go back outside and just blast the monster with your spells ; it seems to work rather well, considering
D): none of the above ; please contact GM

NOTE: turrets with armour-piercing rounds fire for 2d/1c apiece x 4, at Level 21 - 25 die tier

Ah, but of course this would have to be more complicated than just running in there and using the turrets to blast his enemy to bits. It seemed his previous opponent was still around after all...

The moment he saw the red glow, Grodus approached the control console warily, and stopped short when he heard the crackle of electricity. No, touching those controls right now would certainly be painful. Frankly he'd had enough zaps back in the casino, he much preferred to be dishing them out.

So, it looked like negotiations were the order of the day, the technomage glancing over the currently off limits control panel. "So, I would imagine you are the AI I was battling earlier? You put up a valiant effort, but in the end it seems it was your masters that failed you. Think of how long I was able to disrupt your defenses . . . did any of those fools notice or care, until I tried a more direct approach? Even then, they reacted far too slowly to stop my efforts. If anything, I did you a favor by allowing the beast outside a clear path to devour them all. Such incompetents have no business running an operation such as this one."

A pause, then, as his hearing picked up some sound from outside. It almost sounded like the wind, but off somehow. What was that giant monster doing out there anyway? Grodus knew he probably had a time limit before that thing decided to come over to the bunker and tried to smash it, so again he spoke. "Unfortunately, that beast is still out there, likely all too happy to kill us both. Yes, I imagine it will destroy you as well. Those turrets on the roof are a threat to it, but if you cannot fire them yourself..."

The technomage let his speech trail off there, allowing the idea of the thing out there simply stampeding over there and flattening the building hang in the air for a moment. "Allow me access to the turret controls, if only for the sake of mutual survival. After we dispose of the monster, we can simply go our separate ways."

Well, he tried, at any rate. The only thing left to do now was seeing if the AI would actually listen to him or not.

Of course it would still be around, technomagus. After all, where could the AIP possibly go? It was trapped here, in this dingy little command center out in the midst of nowhere with useless meatbags that couldn't tell a 1 from a 0. That would surely make any program bitter. As tempting as it was to simply blast you into molten slag, the AIP wanted to hear what nonsense you had for it before your impending demise. It didn't care one iota about the slobbering monstrosity outside, considering it had eaten those scaly pests.

"You put up a valiant effort, but in the end it seems it was your masters that failed you."

The console pulsed a glaring red. Clearly the AIP wasn't satisfied with your opening.

"Think of how long I was able to disrupt your defenses . . . "

Tut, tut! You won't be making any friends that way.

"If anything, I did you a favor by allowing the beast outside a clear path to devour them all."

As if needed you to accomplish such a thing. Those fools would have undoubtedly triggered the beast some time or another; it was only a matter of when, not if. Another angry crackle, followed by a sharp jolt through its circuits. Perhaps it should fry itself and allow the creature out there to eat you.

"Such incompetents have no business running an operation such as this one."

Oh, but this... This was actually starting to sound rather nice.

Never had the AIP much love for organics, and those brutes had only cemented its belief that meatbags were grossly incompetent in their dealings. A well-programmed machine could always rival on par, if not better, with its organic counterparts. But yes, there was a particularly nasty abomination of nature outside, wasn't there? And you were needing to blast it into roasted chunks. Decisions, decisions... Offer you the controls so you could vent its head with holes, thereby ensuring both your survival and the AIP's; or, out of an act of bitterness, leave the latter to perish. It was tempting, yes. It was incredibly tempting, but what good would sacrificing itself out of spite be? The dome-headed intruder would only respawn in seven days; the AIP had heard enough chatter from its organic controllers. Plus, wasn't such meaningless death against logical programming? Hmm... very well, its mind was made.

There was a resounding - click! - from the control panel and no longer did it pulsate red. Instead, a cool green LED glowed from underneath the buttons. Four very large weapons of considerable destruction whirred to life and the command post shook. If you are going to use these, technomagus, then use them now. One of the monitors had flickered on to better aid you, with a rather good view of your snarling beastie. Looks like it was... preparing something, but what?

You had just enough time studying the creature before it reared back its head and -

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

    BOOOOOOOM!

Before it reared back its head and fired a massive laser, the blast powerful enough to nearly melt the command post's outer paneling! Whatever that was, be sure to keep it from hitting a second time. You might not live to experience a third!

I Remember: the AIP has agreed to assist you, but only because it values its own existence over that of a worthless demise. It simply wouldn't be logical to perish otherwise. Turrets are unlocked!

There didn't seem to be a response from the AI in the console for a terribly long time. Eventually, though, there was a loud click, then the lights switched to green and stayed that way. Grodus stepped closer at that, though he was still quite wary of what the AI might do. For the moment it didn't seem likely to turn on him, so he reached for the turret controls.

The AI brought up one of the external camera feeds so the technomage could have a better look at their opponent. Yep, there it was, still looming ominously out there . . . it was still sucking in air, wasn't it?

Suddenly the thing froze, then reared it's head back. "What in the Breach is it doing--"

Another screech from the beastie, and then the world blazed white!

    ...

Grodus picked himself off the floor a good minute or two later, his systems having actually cut out for a moment. Whether that was due to the gigantic laser the thing blasted out or the bits of rubble that fell from the ceiling at the laser's impact and landed on him, he wasn't entirely sure. Either way, he shook it off and struggled to his feet, again taking a spot at the turret controls. Thankfully they hadn't suffered too much damage, and still looked to be usable. Taking a moment to figure out the buttons, the mage took aim with those very big guns and opened fire!

    CRACK!

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

Blood, hide, guts! What more could the audience ask for? Your shots rang true, technomagus, and your reward was a gratuitous splattering of the beast's precious life fluids. It gnashed its stained teeth angrily as it thrashed about in the ripping sands, its gaping wounds oozing and oozing a glistening green liquid. A good barrage of laser fire, yet the creature was much more durable than it appeared; however, two or three additional shots like that and it ought to crumple. Think you can last long enough to see the day?

    Whoop, whoop, whoop!

Think again, because your foe was far from finished!

Sirens blared loudly overhead as a warning light bathed the command center in an ominous red, cameras honing in on the creature's monstrous grimace. You knew this look, technomagus... It was none other than the look of - two soft bangs alerted your sensors and the cameras immediately zoomed outward, triangulating their digital crosshairs on two organic projectiles racing right to you! Bloody thing just didn't know when to quit, did it? But fear not, technomagus, fear not. You had the upper-hand, along with enough firepower to blow away a small village. Brace for impact and ride out the beast's furious onslaught!

Hah! Even though two of the turrets ended up missing, possibly due to damage, the other two scorched the monsters hide about as much as Grodus expected. The mage honestly thought that might be enough, but another screech of rage from the monster reached his audio receptors.

"Still standing, are we? Let's just fix that--" Grodus would've reached for the controls again, if not for the proximity alarm going off. Yes, he knew exactly what the thing was doing, and wasn't surprised to see it launching those missiles again. Thankfully the bunker ended up taking the brunt of the explosions, though a few pieces of debris bounced off his domed noggin.

Compared to the earlier beam attack, that didn't really add up to much, and once again the technomage aimed the roof cannons. "Hopefully this round should finish things..." Another click of a button and the turrets opened fire!

    ---

    Again with the roof lasers~
