"Augh!" For an instant, Grodus got to feel what being on the business end of one of his lightning spells was like. The blast destroyed his barrier in short order, still tearing at his systems even after the field shattered into translucent green shards and faded away. It probably would've been a lot worse if he hadn't managed to down that many pylons.

This certainly wasn't going to plan any longer, discovered by the enemy as he was, but the technomage wasn't willing to give up just yet. Outnumbered who knows how many to one? Not to mention this huge foreman that would probably try to eat him if he got too close? Bah, none of them were mages . . . all of those grunts were little more than cannon fodder, though the big one and his toys had the potential to be a problem.

There probably was a much bigger fish still lurking around that could take care of all of these fools for him, though. Despite the lingering thought that whatever it was might just turn around and eat him too, Grodus again reached out with his systems and tried to sabotage the next pylon in the line. He likely only had a few chances left to try this, afterward he would have to face the foreman on his own.

"I'm afraid I am not very edible, and you're going to be the one who's dying on the sand today!"

"HEY! What do you think yer doin' with that pylon!?" Exactly what he thought you were, and that was just no good. But try as he might and try as he may, Foreman Gleezag was not known for his speed and grace. He wasn't known for a lot of things, though seldom lived to tell about it. You, however... "Get that pipsqueak away from the defense grid!" he roared. One of his crew, a not-so-particularly bright mercenary by the name of Yargh, was on the receiving end of the foreman's backhand. Teeth and spittle flew everywhere in dramatic fashion. "Don't just stare at him, idiots. GET HIM. He's going to attract the - "

    Zzzt...

    " - thing..."

A pregnant pause took the air by force, all of the scaly thugs snapping their reptilian eyes upon the last pylon. The last pylon that had been keeping it at bay. Ten seconds went by... Twenty... Thirty... A whole entire minute, but nothing stirred from the nearby dunes. Perhaps - perhaps - they had been lucky... Teeth parted into a wicked grin and Foreman Gleezag shifted his gaze upon you hungrily. "He he... Looks like it's just not your lucky day, huh, pipsque - "

    RRRRRRRRAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUURGH...

    Spoke too soon.

Something was very much near, and that something sounded to be extremely... extremely... large. Panic washed over the mercenaries in a wave, and several of them abandoned their posts without the slightest afterthought. "No, you fools! Sudden movements are going to - !" It was too late. A great appendage, barbed and plated with resilient chitin, erupted from the heated sands; some of the mercenaries were granted a swift death as their bodies were effortlessly cleaved into gory pieces. Others, however, were not so lucky. One by one the fleeing men were abruptly sucked beneath the grains, where the awful chorus of teeth crushing down into bone and flesh resonated throughout the quarry. Some got it within their heads to directly challenge this unseen assailant. They unstrung their blasters and openly fired; their futile shots gave away their position and, soon, their lives. The screams began to quickly lessen, until...

"Mm... M-mmm..." Until there was only you and the foreman left, fear apparent within Gleezag's eyes.

It Comes: something is within your vicinity - something hungry... Whatever you do, technomagus, don't move.

Lady Luck didn't seem to be favoring anyone in particular on this lovely day in the desert, though with the roar that shook the sands, maybe things were leaning just a little bit in Grodus's favor. Whatever that thing was, it had to be huge, and certainly not friendly.

The mercenaries acted just about the way the technomage predicted they would, blind panic quickly overwhelming them. Not a good thing to be scrambling about when there was a predator that tracked through vibrations lurking in the sands. Soon enough the screaming started, some mercs abruptly silenced by a great claw scything through them, still others pulled below the dunes and devoured with sickening crunches. There was the futile unloading of blasters from those few bold enough to seek revenge for their fallen comrades, but eventually even they were reduced to nothing more than monster food.

Silence soon reigned over the now nearly empty excavation site, the only two remaining other than the lurking beast being Grodus and Foreman Gleezag.

The technomage didn't even bat an eyelash at all the death and mayhem, though he did wonder just how he was going to get across the sand with that thing still around. If all else failed he could probably summon enough Xs to hold his weight and then sort of glide across. It would be undignified but that was better than getting chomped.

For now, though, Grodus only needed one X. Thankfully he didn't have to move to call one out. No, one of them appeared just over his shoulder, though it did not remain hovering there for long. No, almost as soon as it appeared, it glided close to the hulking reptile nearby and started to scrape at the sand at Gleezag's feet. It probably wasn't much movement, but then the beast hadn't needed much to be made aware of the other mercenaries, now had it?

You know what they say about curiosity...

    Scrrch, scrrch, scrrch...

"N-No, get your little thing aw-way from me... You're going to bring it over here! Quit it, QUIT I - !"

    CRUNCH!

    Yummy.

But don't laugh just yet, technomagus. As a pair of ironclad teeth erupted from underneath the Foreman and shredded him into meaty ribbons, reptilian blood spraying everywhere, you were next!

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

    Showtime.

    Rumble, rumble, rumble, rumble... BOOM!

Sand, dirt, bloodied body parts all went flying - but did it really matter? You were sent flying head-over-heels, the force so powerful that you nearly lost control of your senses. Almost... you were proving to be quite the resilient one. The air grew hot, moist with humidity, and the alarming sound of laboured breathing consumed your thoughts. Where our dear Foreman Gleezag had once stood was now an oozing puddle of greenish fluids, tatters of his uniform littering the blood-soaked ground. He won't be any further trouble. Looming a few treacherous inches away hovered the monstrous head of his plated murderer; four gleaming eyes peered down at you curiously. You noted the intelligence swirling within them but were far more concerned with the strips of flesh dangling from the many serrated, needle-like teeth posing as a sinister grin.

    "Huunngh... Huunngh..."

    It knew you were there...

But it didn't know if you were tasty.

And with one resounding crunch, there was no more Foreman Gleezag. Hopefully with this latest kill, the beast lurking below would have gotten its fill and decide to move on? It was a nice thought, but Grodus knew if his typical luck held then the thing would probably stick around to try and eat him too.

Oh, what was that godawful screeching the thing was making? Grodus tried to block some of the sound out with his free hand but that was about the only thing he had time to do as the ground started shaking again. Did it know he was here--

In the next instant the desert sands in the distance between him and where the Foreman had perished exploded outward, sending everything in the vicinity flying, including the technomage! He spent a few seconds airborne and then hit the sand hard, rolling about twice from momentum and then coming to a stop in a crumpled heap. It would take an awful lot more than that to truly down him, though, and he shakily pulled himself to his knees.

Unfortunately, that was when the beast's all too close breathing above him registered. Grodus instantly froze, and looked up to meet the gaze of the strange horned monster who was curiously regarding him. There was probably no way out of fighting this thing, it now knew he was here . . .

He took a moment to glance the beast over, to see if he could spot any weak points. The thing seemed heavily plated all over-- wait, those green protrusions on its sides, maybe those were the answer! Another few seconds taken to steel himself for the coming battle, and then Grodus stood up, focusing his magic.

Three quick blasts of lightning soon followed, aimed at the nearest of those green spots, and then the technomage took off running! If he stayed still for this then he would certainly be devoured!

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

So you really thought it was a good idea to just - zap~! - the heavily-plated, large-fanged, all around nasty-looking titan of a monster, huh? Let that sink in for a moment as you remember why, exactly, you are a leader of a bunch of goggle-wearing peons.

Emerald shards exploded everywhere, green goop splattering onto the sand with satisfying squelches. Suffice to say, two of your attacks had found their mark with grace. But now you had one pissed-off monster! It let out a harrowing cry and leaped head-first into the sand, plated tail thrashing about like mad. Gutsy, technomagus, gutsy... You exchanged the element of surprise (and your location) for a preemptive assault, and now comes the hurt.

...Except everything had gone perfectly quiet.

For a good long while you stood there, body tensed and scepter primed for a second round. Nothing, however, stirred from the rippling sands. The seconds lazily ticked by as if it were an eternity. Perhaps you had succeeded in frightening the beast off with your impressive display of mi -

    "Gnnngh..."

Ha ha, no. Who were you kidding?

    Wip, wip, wip!

They emerged too fast. Three bulbous nodes, as large as yourself and faintly unsettling, ruptured from the calm sands. Two spouted yellow heads while the third, wobbling a good distance away, was dyed a glaring crimson. Were these... feelers, maybe? Ugly little thin - watch out! A split second was all it took before the two foremost appendages became active. And in that paltry time sprouted blades. Sharp, incredibly long blades. The sharpened edges whipped out with hellish speed, whistling as they sliced through the air. A place where you were unfortunately standing!

Ordinarily, Grodus would've sent Lord Crump and his mech after this thing, but right now he didn't have that option. Nope, without any of his minions around, it was up to the technomage to defend himself or attack if need be.

Hah, it looked like those emerald panels were weak points with how they shattered, both their shards and the creature's blood now adorning the sands. The beast let loose another deafening screech before retreating below the earth once again, its tail thrashing wildly.

But just as soon as the thing completely vanished, all became slient. Grodus knew it had to still be around, even though he couldn't see it . . . he wasn't strong enough to have driven the thing off with three blasts of magic, he knew better than that! Still, for a long time it was quiet, the mage tensing to strike or run as soon as it popped up again.

    Wait, what was that noise--

Suddenly three bizarre appendages sprouted from the sand, two fairly close to him and a third a bit further away. The first two were yellow, while the third was a glaring red. Half a second passed, and the yellow ones sprouted blades, lashing out in a flash. Fortunately Grodus reacted quickly enough that he was able to avoid getting skewered, though his robes gained a few more cuts to repair.

The two bladed heads looked too heavily plated to damage, but that red one... As the technomage ran to get out of the blades' reach, he let loose three blasts of flame at the unarmed red node!

    Crack!

    "AIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!"

The nodes appeared to be laughably easy. A good-sized hit was all took before the monster let out an agonized wail. Wounded, the third feeler slipped beneath the sands and so did its kin. What came next should be no surprise.

A great plated tail, thicker than you and incredibly weighty, erupted from the sands with such fury that it could only be described as awe-inspiring. More importantly, however, was the revelation of three more emerald crystals waiting to be shattered. How oddly placed... You would think that such vulnerable weak spots would have been better guarded. And, to a degree, they were. Since you had fired at the node and your spell successfully connected, the creature knew exactly where you stood. And if it knew where you currently stood...

    WHUMP, WHUMP, WHUMP!

    So too did its tail!

Having landed at least one blast of fire upon the red node, Grodus watched it and the two bladed ones retreat into the sand. Another screech from the monster sounded and the mage got ready to dodge another counterattack, not entirely sure which direction it would come from.

The ground suddenly shook again, and this time the beast's tail emerged from the sand, another set of emerald crystals revealed. The technomage started winding up for another lightning spell, but before he could cast it, the tail started thrashing about, right at where he was standing!

Once, twice, he avoided being hit, but the third time was apparently the charm and he didn't manage to duck quickly enough. The strike sent Grodus flying backward a good distance, though he managed to land on his feet afterward. Rather than running any closer, he stayed where he landed; the monster was still in range of his lightning spells!
