Grodus had been about to lash out at the next pylon in the lineup, though it seemed the light on the thing was glowing a bit more brightly. He waited for a moment to see if anything would happen, and then suddenly the light just went out. Huh, that was strange . . . though it certainly worked in his favor, one less obstacle to get out of the way.

There also seemed to be something odd happening with the wildlife nearby, as through his Xs he discovered the numerous lizards and desert hares in the area scrambling elsewhere at a rapid pace. Hmmm, that probably meant these pylons were definitely keeping something away from the dig site. As for what they were repelling, the mage had no real idea. Perhaps vermin, or perhaps something a whole lot nastier . . . hopefully it was the latter, as that would prove a more useful distraction than just some random rats.

With his original target downed, Grodus focused on the next pylon in the line, unleashing yet another torrent of junk data at his latest target.

    Well! That was rather embarrassing...

And just like that, the AIP had shorted one of its very own instruments. Pylon unit-06 went offline without so much as a decent fight. Cheap hardware... The defense program rerouted its security protocols and quickly abandoned the previous tactic. A miserable failure all around, but it wasn't as if the organics within the command center were actually going to read the security reports flooding in. Of course not, for that would be too logical. All was not bleak, however. The moment pylon unit-06 went down and further added to the AIP's woes, a flood of junk data came surging in. This confirmed its rising suspicions: someone was tampering with the pylons. And if someone was tampering with the pylons...

    Elevating threat assessment...
    Threat level now Code:
    ORANGE...|

Will anyone with eyes read this, though?

Maybe and maybe not. This wasn't for the AIP to openly decide. Nevertheless, the defense program worked feverishly with what it had been given. The remaining pylons, now only four in number, received a hastily-written patch. It was downloaded and installed promptly, and now things will be played for keeps. If the hidden meddler thought to down a fourth pylon and further jeopardize the camp's progress, the AIP wasn't going down without its integrity intact!

    Pylon unit-07, you're the camp's only hope!

Pylon Status: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 - heightened defensive measures (take the lowest roll and double it) ; if the total goes above twenty, the AIP automatically has a twenty and does not short the pylon. Grodus must roll a twenty or match the AIP's rolls: this turn - 17/25

Look over there - the sands are beginning to shift as something massive approaches!

Whatever these pylons were trying to keep away, there was certainly growing evidence that the thing was beginning to approach the area rapidly. Grodus felt the sand shift below his feet, and hoped whatever it was, it would prefer eating the mercenaries rather than himself. So long as he stayed out of sight, he should hopefully remain unnoticed by it as well as the lizards, though.

Still, if he wanted this thing to do his dirty work for him, he would need to get rid of another of these pylons. The technomage acquired the seventh in the line as a target now, focusing on disabling the software within as quickly as possible. The things were apparently getting wise to his attacks, though, and trying to get his data through was getting a lot more difficult.

With luck, this latest barrage would take out the stubborn bit of hardware, and then, let the chaos begin!

Aw yeah, the pylon was a trooper.

Getting wise to the technomagus' tricks was an understatement; the AIP was learning. It's last minute effort to thwart this unseen attacker had been met with success, which meant there was little incentive to alter its defense algorithms. Pylon unit-07 was safe and there were still three other units to protect. Although the AIP could not readily combat the encroaching bio-mass zooming this way, it could uphold its directives long enough to give this nosy intruder the boot. Besides, if the bio-mass ate a few of the organic good-for-nothings and got them motivated to actually do something? That was just the icing on this miserable cupcake.

One of the outer pylons thrummed to life, unit-02, and a slight jolt of crackling electricity arced across its weather-beaten surface. It was now or never, do or die; what are you going to choose, technomagus?

Pylon Status: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 - heightened defensive measures (take the lowest roll and double it) ; if the total goes above twenty, the AIP automatically has a twenty and does not short the pylon. Grodus must roll a twenty or match the AIP's rolls: 15/21

All seismic activity has momentarily ceased, the painted desert lands eerily quiet...

A faint growl emerged from the technomage as his latest attempt failed to disable the next pylon in the line. The vibrations throughout the sand seemed to cease for the moment, though he knew the thing was still nearby, idly lurking while a few of the defenses remained.

Ugh, whatever the defense program on these things did, it was making it highly difficult for his hacking attempts to break through. Still, there was certainly more than one way to get past a stubborn defense AI, and Grodus focused his efforts on another of the pylons, trying to break into it using a different method than earlier. This time the attack was highly directed and aggressive, as the mage aimed for deletion of the pylon's codes rather than disruption. If he did enough damage to the software the thing would definitely malfunction and fail . . .

Once it did, those mercs would be living on borrowed time...

Not doing so hot, were you, technomagus?

Yet another pylon had refused to yield into your aggressive overrides, the AIP's intelligence expanding at an even greater rate. Should it have a voice or even a programmable function to do so, it would have surely laughed at your futile attempts to further hijack this operation. Which, it could be argued, was only becoming more and more vexing for the unappreciated defense program...

A crackle surged through unit-02 and the technomagus could no longer penetrate its bolstered firewalls. All was not entirely lost, however. There were still two pylons that were ripe for the picking, but think about this for a moment, why don't you? Two more pylons, yes. But also two more chances of failing to short circuit them, thus providing a system lockout for our dear overlord. For your sake, you knew better than to let that happen. Surely you could think outside this irritating problem and turn it to your benefit? Perhaps the pylons were not your true objective after all... As it currently stands, there was a very disgruntled AIP that was as every much annoyed with your prodding as it was its ignorant masters. So many decisions, so little time...

Pylon unit-05 surged to life and remained upright, its pulsating LED almost winking teasingly.

Pylon Status: 01,02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 - heightened defensive measures (take the lowest roll and double it) ; if the total goes above twenty, the AIP automatically has a twenty and does not short the pylon. Grodus must roll a twenty or match the AIP's rolls: 12/17

Hrrrrm, this was proving a bit more difficult than Grodus expected. That last stupid pylon managed to avoid a shutdown, chances were the other two would prove just as difficult to drag into submission. There really had to be another way to go about this, maybe a way of attracting or annoying whatever the pylons were keeping back.

There! What in the world made those sand dunes shudder like that? It probably had to be whatever monster the pylons were driving off. There were only a few remaining, however. Maybe if the technomage got its attention sparked enough or just pissed it off, the beast would ignore the pylons in favor of laying waste to the guards?

Grodus began to gather power for a spell, using his Xs to triangulate just where it was he needed to strike . . . hopefully the lightning spell would be able to reach beneath the sand far enough. He was still hidden pretty well so the beast probably wouldn't notice him, the lizards milling about certainly wouldn't be that lucky.

    ---
Thunder Rage x 1 at the formerly shuddering sand dunes, just using coins as I'm not sure of Grodus's level here...

You really done it now, technomagus.

A lightning spell wasn't exactly the most inconspicuous use of magic, nor did it go unnoticed on a relatively clear desert day. "What's goin' on out there!? Who's zap-zappin' our crap?" And it turns out the operation foreman wasn't as dense as he looked... The ground quaked as he came stomping out from the command hut.

Covered in emerald green scales and literally a towering wall of sinewy muscle, the foreman was easily the biggest of his toothy goons. His sandy nostrils flared once before a pair of reptilian eyes narrowed themselves on our robed protagonist. "You there!" snarled the foreman, his rancid breath hot. "Yeah you, I'm talkin' to you! Whaddaya think you're doin' with our junk?" Now, he was no dummy, technomagus. Foreman Gleezag didn't reach this esteemed rank on good looks alone (though he may or may not have eaten the competition). A slobbery tongue slid over the foreman's chops, his primitive mind wondering if there was a heaping pile of meat underneath all your layering. Juicy, crunchy, tough or chewy! It didn't matter. Meat was meat! Glorious, savoury, tasty meat! "So... you think you can just waltz into our camp and make funny business with our stuff, huh? HA." Not on his watch, and the foreman reached over to snatch up a rust-covered doohickey. "You're gonna regret messin' with us," he growled. "We got a job to do and we're paid to do it, and no scrawny little half-pint intruder is gonna keep us from collecting our crates of meat! AIN'T THAT RIGHT, BOYS!?"

There was a resounding - "SURE IS, BOSS!" - from the grimy work crews down in the pits below.

"Damn straight." Now, what to do about you, hmm? The obvious answer was crush you, squash you, slice you and dice you. But those were too many options for a simple brute; Foreman Gleezag was rather partial to slicey-dicey. Why fix what ain't broke? "I've had enough of you," grinned the foreman. "And I think you'll taste rather nice after a good roastin'. Why don't you do us all a favour and die nicely!?" Is that such a thing? Eh, whatever. He wasn't paid to think about intellectual stuffs. Tired of your meddling, the foreman pressed a meaty claw onto his remote and is about to give you a new religion!

Thundering Rage: Missed! The unnatural lightning spell has attracted the attention of Foreman Gleezag.
Foreman Gleezag: Is doing the thing, about to give Grodus a new religion.

New Religion: Remaining pylons return the favour in kind, zapping Grodus twice - ouch!
