Looking for Trouble at High Noon

Post by Grodus on Mon Aug 18, 2014 10:31 pm

    Time: 12:00 PM
    Date: 3/27/2014

Even as much as he wanted to head out this direction the day before, Grodus knew better, given everything else he went through. Repeatedly fried by that slot machine, and then taking a beating from that strange robot disguised as a human, even if he did win? Nope, heading to the Tech-Dome after all that would've been a fool's errand. So he took the remainder of the day to rest up, and trekked out to the Wastes immediately after waking in the morning.

It was quite hot out in the desert already, especially with the dark robes he wore, but he could tolerate much higher temperatures. The howling winds and desolate landscape also didn't bother Grodus in the slightest, he was used to having a base on a moon, so this wasn't too unfamiliar. What was unfamiliar, was the odd metal building off in the distance. The technomage approached it warily, not knowing exactly what would be waiting here for him.

This was certainly the Tech-Dome, though he noted some old damage from fire of some sort to the structure. It looked intact enough, though he stood near the entrance and observed for a bit just to make sure it wasn't going to randomly collapse on top of him.

Now then, E.B., what did you have waiting for him this time?

It had been a very sound decision to recuperate after the trying ordeal back in Portal City. Should the technomagus have chosen otherwise and pressed his luck, the bespectacled villain might not have a prayer out here in the merciless wastes! And speaking of merciless, Grodus was rather brave to just waltz up to the Tech-Dome's front doors and not give the rundown place a good once-over...

A gruff voice suddenly disturbed the quiet. "Hngh, who's there?" it demanded.

Footsteps, heavy and cumbersome, loudly trudged over rusted bits of metal and sand as a horrifying shadow crept outward from a nearby corner. Neither human nor immediately recognizable, emerald scales glinted in the afternoon sun as beady eyes twinkled beneath a shadowed brow. A vicious intelligence swirled within them. "Maybe it's just nothin'," grumbled the monstrous creature. It stepped out fully and swiveled its snout in various directions, claws tightly wrapped around the grip of a futuristic pistol. Most likely laser-based, from the looks of its sleek design and attached energy pack. Much like its owner, who was clad in medium armour and sporting interplanetary gear, the firearm was not from contemporary times. What was a brutish reptile doing all the way down here, planet-side?

    "Rork, what's your status."

One of the alien's communication devices became alive with static, prompting the armed sentry to grasp it with a bloodstained claw and bring the tiny gadget closer to a fanged lip. "Eh, nothin' much to report," it sighed. The brute's tail flicked out of unspoken agitation. "Thought I heard somethin' out here, is all. Hey, when is that shipment of meat comin' in?" Seems the technomagus had not been outright spotted...

There was a bit of clatter on the other end of the line, things audible heard shuffling around. "Checked the schedule; should be this upcoming weekend," came the answer. "Now get back to your post and quit chasing the wind. We've already lost three patrols from stupidity."

"Fine, fine. Goin' back to my post." There was no use arguing with command. Bulbous nostrils flared and the communicator was tucked away, the creature returning to whence it came.

Those robust jaws looked as if they could chew through metal...

Close Encounter: Grodus is not alone out here, the Tech-Dome under a severe infestation! It's best if he doesn't tempt fate a second time and goes about his sneaking a little quieter... There's no telling how many of these alligator-like creatures are patrolling the area.

Augh, where the blazes had that thing come from?! Thankfully, Grodus had froze in the shadow of the building when he initially heard the noise, remaining utterly motionless as the strange giant lizard glanced around. Judging from the armor and weapon, the creature was likely some sort of space pirate or mercenary. What the blazes was it doing down here, then? Sure, the remains of the Tech-Dome could be useful for scrap, but there didn't seem to be anything else useful here, unless...

Unless they were also here looking for whatever it was he came here for. A twinge of possessiveness ran through him at that thought; whatever lay at the end of this trail was his alone! If the technomage was at full strength, he probably would have charged after the lizard and attempted to dispose of it, but at that particular moment he wasn't nearly strong enough. The laser pistol would be an issue, but he was almost more worried about the beast's jaws . . . it certainly seemed savage enough to snap those fangs onto an opponent that ventured too close.

Discretion would be key in this case, and so Grodus called upon one of the small X creatures he could summon. He could remain hidden as he sent it to scout ahead, and it was small and silent enough to remain unnoticed unless it strayed directly into the lizard's sights.

Given its commands, the little flying critter floated to action, hugging the wall of the building and trying to stay above anything's visual field as it scoped things out.

A mercenary? Not a bad guess, considering.

Unlike his earlier rashness from before, Grodus had since grown wise. A tiny floating "X"-like creature had been summoned in his stead, and it was sent forward as both a functioning scout and suitable fodder. What it found during its initial surveillance ought to introduce a few crucial details to its master.

Up ahead, past the seemingly-infinite piles of refuse and old parts, was a makeshift bunker. It was constructed of various metals, some native to this world and others from beyond. The most distinct note to memorize was that the entire building was fortified and armed; laser-mounted turrets, four in total, guarded its perimeter upon the establishment's corners. Not an overly large facility, it was only a single story and was hardly bigger than the average home found back in Portal City. What was it meant for? Surely such a miniscule structure was designed for a more temporary purpose. Could it be a form of mobile command or armed forces? Nothing more could be discerned from the outside...

In any event, reaching the bunker would not be immediately possible. Fencing protected the general vicinity and kept any unwanted intruders out. Only a fool would think to pass through its electrified grid. To make matters even more complicated, there must have been over two dozen reptilian mercs patrolling the area.

All were eager for a good slicey and dicey, and none had any qualms about shredding Grodus into colourful ribbons.

Interestingly, the Tech-Dome itself had been relatively left alone. Perhaps the mercs were concentrating their efforts elsewhere? Whatever they were searching for, be it an advanced artifact or a crate of juicy meat untouched by time, there was an apparent excavation project no further than thirty meters away from their command post. Within the quarry, should the technomagus' scout venture ahead, were dozens more hired guns toiling away. The sun's harsh rays gleamed off their emerald scales, taut muscles bulging with every swing of the pickaxe. No, they were definitely looking for something... What?

Another crucial detail and fairly obvious, was an established network of... pylons? Numerous cylindrical devices outlined the work area and emitted a faint thrum; the earth pulsed beneath them. Strange... What were these for?

    Further investigation was required...

Klegg Operation of Planetoid-01B: it seems the mercenaries are deep in the process of searching for something. What it is remains a mystery. Currently, the entire operation is unaware of Grodus' presence. Keep it that way. What is the technomagus going to do?

    >>Investigate the command post - valuable intel could be inside (Difficulty: extremely hard)
    >>Investigate the excavation site - there may be worthwhile clues (Difficulty: extremely hard)
    >>Sabotage the Electric Fencing - it would lower their defenses and allow for easier entry (Difficulty: hard)
    >>Sabotage the Pulsing Cylinders - maybe this will do something? (Difficulty: moderate)
    >>Twiddle Thumbs and Do Nothing - it's hard being an evil mastermind (Difficulty: weenie)

The tiny X flitting about revealed quite a bit more data to the mage hidden in the shadows, though most of it was bad news indeed. It seemed these lizards had some sort of operation going nearby, with a small and well defended bunker next to what appeared to be a dig site. What in the world could they be looking for out here, anyway?

The little creature investigated the fencing around the whole operation, and through its senses, Grodus could tell there was electricity flowing through the entire structure. He could likely manipulate it to a degree, given it was much the same as lightning, but if he wanted to do that he would have to get closer. The roaming mercs certainly put a damper on that idea . . . if they saw him, they would be on top of him with their blades in seconds.

The dig site was a bit more interesting, with numerous lizards working the ground in the hopes of finding whatever was they were looking for. The workers themselves weren't the most curious thing in that area, though, the odd pylons caught the small construct's eye and it hovered closer to them. Hmm, there were vibrations going out from those? Hmm, perhaps they were part of some kind of deep sonar grid?

In any case, if Grodus wanted to get any further into the area, he would have to distract all of the savage beasts standing in his way. The pylons would be a good start, and with those as a target in mind, the technomage summoned three more of his X creatures and sent them to follow the first. It only took them a few seconds to take their positions, and the next order he sent was to stay out of sight as best they could and start knocking over the pylons.

The more disruption he could pull off from a distance, the better; this would only be the start of the trouble he planned to cause them!

Not so fast, technomagus. One simply does not knock over these pylons.

While none of the mercenaries had spotted Grodus' group of minions, sabotaging the equipment was by no means an easy task. Each of the pylons, despite having no outer offensive and defensive capabilities, had three individual prongs that secured their position into the earth. Additionally, a universal anti-interference program had been installed and was currently running within a local network. A hacking attempt would not be simple... And to make matters even worse, the aforementioned program had already detected a foreign object invading one of the pylon's immediate space. Can you guess what happens next?

    ...Unidentifiable intruder detected.
    ...Defense protocols engaged.|

The green indicator light on pylon unit-004 switched to an ominous red, its lone LED pulsating. Quickly, technomagus! This device was no doubt preparing a report for command's notice, so intervene and prevent this message from being sent!

Anti-Interference Program: although not a particularly advanced defense application, the AIP is not without teeth. In order for Grodus to successful shutdown pylon unit-004 and sabotage the next in line, he must overcome the AIP in a game of technological superiority. Roll two Level 6 - 10 die; the objective is to roll higher than the AIP; a 20* is an automatic win. Four pylon units out of seven must be forced offline before Grodus' sabotage attempt is deemed successful. If he can manage it, the reward will be quite satisfying.

    * = think digital Blackjack, minus the 21

Tch, those things were more securely rooted in the ground than Grodus thought! It would turn out trying to knock them over wasn't going to work, and to make matters worse, if that red light on the first one was any indication, they didn't take kindly to the presence of his Xs. He was probably going to need to disable the pylon's internal software, and that would be very tricky indeed.

It wasn't so tricky it couldn't be done, however. He had a two-way connection with his little pets after all; the mage could transmit data through them if the need arose. Right now that was his only hope of not being spotted by the roaming lizards, so Grodus gave it his best attempt, focusing his processors to try and hack into the thing. Hopefully this worked, because there were quite a few more in line he would have to disable similarly.

This was almost like imposing his will on a potential summon . . . he might not've been able to enthrall the Shadow Queen like this, but he was certainly strong enough to overcome this defense software!

    ...Error. Error.
    ...S-Systems now off-offline.|

    Beginner's luck.

A ebbing thrum disturbed the monotonous echoes of work and toil, pylon unit-04's LED display growing dark and its many intricate mechanisms lapsing into an abrupt stillness. One down... and still plenty more to go. It seemed none in the excavation site had taken notice to one of their instruments malfunctioning. An excellent stroke of luck for Grodus, all things considering.

Next in line was a rusty and weather-beaten pylon unit-01; it, like its fallen brethren, was more or less an exact copy. Only this time, however, the local defense program had taken a notice to the technomagus' meddling. Just a notice, though. Despite having realized that pylon unit-04 had gone offline via shady circumstances and was no longer responsive to remote commands, it could be rationalized that the cruddy thing was just faulty. Very likely, as the mercenaries were not known for being tech-savvy. They were more of a "shoot first, eat corpse later" mentality. Ergo, and after preparing a lovely bug report for someone at the command post to read (who most assuredly will not do so), the AIP occupied itself with business as usual. Little did it know that an unfamiliar X-shaped invader was already thinking to offline yet another pylon...

And, perhaps, inadvertently doom them all...

Just a bit more junk data to transmit, aaaaaand, there! Through the eyes of his summons, Grodus saw the lights on the pylon he was attacking go out at about the same moment the error message registered. Hmmph; eat that, inferior technology! That particular pylon was only the first he had to disable, and he had the Xs hover over towards the next in line, one rusty from being exposed to the elements for so long.

Even as the technomage poised his systems to lash out again, he had to wonder just why the things were even out here. They were distant enough from the dig site to not really be effective as underground sonar range finders. Whatever was in that hole, it seemed like they had a fairly good idea of where it was anyway. Maybe... they were used to repel something? That was about the only idea that came to him, but he wasn't all that sure of it.

Hrm, the mercenaries were probably out here just for whatever was buried in the dig site . . . it might be related to what he was looking for, or it could just be this was all in the way of his real objective which might be nearby. In either case, he needed to get rid of them all somehow, preferably without being discovered. Hopefully if he caused enough trouble or scared enough of them, they would all retreat.

Still, something should happen if he broke enough of the pylons, so once again on to the breaking!

Inferior technology is one way of putting it.

Just like the weather-damaged piece of hardware before it, pylon unit-01 had been deactivated with little to no difficulty. It too powered down and left the remaining units to shoulder the burden. By now the AIP was growing suspicious. Twice within five minutes it had to send reports of malfunctioning instruments to the command center, and twice its diligence will go unnoticed. Useless organics... No matter how much it wanted to turn the command center's automated turrets upon the ignorant mercenaries lounging within, its parameters would never allow for such a mutinous desire. Ergo, and after having thoroughly scrubbed through its two reports, the AIP became wise.

Something, or someone, was interfering with the pylon units on the camp's western side. For what purpose? Additional investigation was required and, if its calculations were correct, the next unit to be assaulted would be pylon unit-06. It was time to test this theory of an unwanted saboteur in their midst...

Pylon unit-06 quietly thrummed, its green LED deceptively innocent.

Pylon Status: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 - defensive measures (take the lowest roll and double it) ; if the total goes above twenty, the AIP has short-circuited its own unit

The local wildlife has fled for cover, lizards and desert hares scattering to the four corners...
