    Rat Territory

Post by Nessa on Wed Jul 09, 2014 10:48 pm

    July 9; 9:00pm
    Stench.

The sewers of Portal City have always stank. But not ever like this.

The reek of gore, garbage, and filthy creature fills the entirety of the system. Those walking by the sewer grates above may catch a whiff, but not much of what actually lay underneath. The air itself takes on a brown hue, the green and red mixing together to become an ungodly colour. The green from actual rotting corpses of mice, cats, and other citydwelling animals. The red from an unknown blood scented aura.

Of course only unknown to those not currently residing in the area.

Along the walls underneath each sewer grate is a small nail with a piece of wood hanging from it. No sign, no letter. Just a small drawing of what looks like an Egyptian woman holding up a branch of some grain. Kyphi. Incense. The otherworldly smells coming from the sewers are filtering through this small enchantment, leaving nothing but small doses of the terrible scent to waft up to the city.

All along the ground, however in some sort of order, are the corpses and piles of food wrappers. They line the walls as if the place has turned into a dumpster junkyard. And it's easy to see what's been causing it.

Rats. Hundreds upon hundreds are in visible sight, and more throughout the system that one couldn't possible see without a powerful ability. They sniff around, pick fights with each other, and stack the remains of each dinner in an appropriate pile. What... wait... Is this order? Order in this chaos? They are all coordinated. There is a definite motion they are all coming and going from.

Though it may not look nefarious, just odd, it's far from innocent.

Within the Black Swarm, a single white dot wiggles her way out of the mischief of vermin and rides atop one of her larger brethren, who is indeed a human's forearm length and twice the girth.

The small white rat blinks over the proceedings and switches to other big rats to ride upon. Busying herself with overwatching while Mother is... busy.

    Things are going well.

No, things are not going well. Certainly, very far from well. Death was, well, not cooperating, to say the least. People were not staying dead when killed, and were in fact even jovial about such a serious subject. That was not to say Death hadn't joked about it on occasion, but those jokes were more to calm the deceased than to actually be funny. Not like the idiots that made light of the final darkness. In any case, Death was in a sewer. Not just any sewer, but THE sewer. He wasn't here out of any misguided attempt to find the portal he'd arrived through or to canvas the area for bits of his past. Death had perfect recall, he knew there would be no signs of the portal or of his past, because there hadn't been any after arrival. No, Death was in the sewer for the same reason he was anywhere; to put faces to names and add them to his ever growing list of those that should be dead but are not, and those that are alive that he is unaware of.

There were plenty of large rats around, that was to be sure. Both streaming past intersections in the distance and filling the cold void left by his passage. His eyes glowed like pale blue headlamps from the empty skull sitting atop what looked, at first glance, like a bulky Hell's Angel from the collarbone down, as no skin or bone was visible. To otherworldly senses, Death looked like nothing. Not like a Hell's Angel, not like an Angel, not like a Demon, not like a Corpse, like nothing. A hole in the world that should be filled with air and the building blocks of life. Of course, to a sensitive nose, Death smelled of Death. Of chilled, clean bone with the lingering scent of char, as though all the flesh had been burned off by some otherworldly flame, and of coat leather and engine oil, his clothing taking on the scent of his conveyance in a permanent manner.

Death watched them come and go with his permanent sickly grin, impassive as yet through that expression of bony joy. He made no noise, he did not need to. He had been noticed long ago.

    Of course you were noticed.

Not much escapes thousands of sets of eyes pointed in all directions.

As soon as Death's presence is noticed, the production line-esque movemnt ceases, and the mischief of rats begins countermeasures. Hiding anything overly stolen, alerting scouts to send a message to mother, and telling the little white rat about what's going on. Suzanne quickly turns tail toward the intruder's entrance and hops from one back to another until she is the only one in front of the biker looking fellow. She stands in front of him, fearless and curious. What indeed are you doing here, Death? You have no place amongst immortals unless they are grievously wounded.

Suzanne sniffs and sends the sensation of what the being in front of her smells like to Mother.

The air thickens more, the heavier scent of blood wafts upon the air and the smells from the sewer itself become completely drowned out.

It didn't take long for her to show up now did it?

"Oh there seems to be a visitor in our humble abode... How are you dear?" The words come from every direction. There isn't any sign of anyone but the white rat. A darker aura takes precedence over the blood smell, and not a sense, magical or otherwise, would feel a thing in this air.

So, avatar of mortality, how indeed are you feeling?

Death stood, unmoving and unmoved by the scurrying of many many little feet, watching blankly as the many little rats split and proceeded to vanish what they had been doing, while simultaneously keeping eyes peeled on his presence and ferrying yet another rat, this one different than the others in rather obvious ways. His gaze shifted until his head was tilted downward, the jaw hanging unattended, partially open as twin ghostly headlamps set their otherworldly gaze on the little white rat that stood fearlessly somewhere ahead of his feet.

The change in odor and metaphysical presence went unnoticed by the avatar of Death, though anyone passing by overhead likely fainted dead away from the combined feelings coming from beneath. His gaze stuck to the little white rat, he let what few echoes there might have been from the voice that came from nowhere die away before he spoke into the minds of all of those that had the capacity to reason within a good distance, his voice echoing and grating like two tombstones rubbing together, rubble cascading from their meeting to the flagstones beneath, creating yet more echoes with each small tapping noise.

LESS THAN ACCEPTABLE.  THERE IS A PROBLEM.

And Death had come to the realm of the rats for help. Whatever for?

Come to Nessa's abode for help? Oh whatever for dear Death? Oh she could only guess, but that would be rude wouldn't it? However uninvited, the being before her was a guest, and Nessa only loves entertaining that certain bit of social understanding. If only to quash it at a later date. But she's not about to just let loose a string of threats.

She's sure she's seen this guy before somewhere. He reminds her of Hel. The Elder that Odin so very much held dear for a small time. She doesn't remember the story, but attributes Death to her easily. Skeletal works.

Nessa's black shroud whips around her like a long cloak, affecting her appearance completely, she seems naught but pale face on a short statured whorl of darkness. She doesn't get to show off very often, but nor does she try to. She was simply in use of her aura the moment Death came knocking, and she answered in haste. Mustn't keep Death waiting.

As his telepathic voice rings out, she sets up quick guards in her mind. She's had quite enough of people in her head already. Her aura guards her mind, along with Carnwennan's shroud. She makes no motion as this happens, but shows a concerned look at the being.

"Less than acceptable? My dear, what seems to be the matter? Is there a way I can help? I'm afraid I didn't catch your name." She soothes, a few rats poke out of her veil of shadow, and the small white one, Suzanne, appears on her shoulder, melding out of her aura and tugging on her mother's ear once with a small squeak.

The Piper is definitely interested. This guy looks like trouble.

If anything, Nessa is always up for some mischief.

Showing off would be lost on Death, as most beings figured out rather quickly after making his acquaintance, so skipping that phase of the relationship entirely was only to the good for the both of them.Threats are also lost on Death, for a similar reason. He's just not one for social graces, or mortal graces, or even earthly graces. There's always something subtly off about the bloke, whether it be his bedside manner, the whiteness of his bony face, or something entirely different is up for debate. Not that many people bother to debate that Death is off-the-wall nuts. Completely crackers, and completely unaware of it.

Her mental guards go unnoticed, as Death really has no business with her mind, his voice not exactly telepathic so much as omnipresent. His voice would be heard by a robot in a void with no auditory sensors, just as it is heard by the rocks and the trees and the living beings he surrounds himself with. Not only that, but he has no sense of her mind. He could not mess if he wanted to. But that was beside the point, the point was that he was extorting rats and a woman with a black shroud because he'd heard something vaguely about some creepy stuff happening in the sewer, which was to the good as far as he was concerned.

I AM DEATH. PEOPLE ARE NOT DYING AS THEY SHOULD.

Hopefully you were still interested in the newbie explanation, which Death had already heard and rejected, but how were you to know that? For that matter, what was he doing in th sewer asking you of all people that question?

Whether or not it was showing off, instincts are instincts. Death had come to her abode uninvited, and like any mother hen, she simply ruffled her feathers and sized up the situation.

In any case, Nessa's eyes widen, albeit in faux impressed nature, when he speaks his nominative. Death. THE Death? Marethyu? No no... she's not looking at the avatar of mortality of her world. He was dark haired and had a hook like scythe for a hand. She's heard of him, not of this... being. Something celestial about this 'Death' enters her thoughts. There are plenty of worlds out there apparently, and this could simply be another avatar of the worlds' plethora of immortal beings. She  can definitely since the otherworldly existence.

"Well hello, dear Death. I so dearly apologize. Have I not been killing enough or are you simply not in the understanding that this place is not for dying? Are you new to the plane? People come back when they die here. It's part of the rules of the realm. Annoying. But part of the rules nonetheless."

Nessa steps forward toward the being, not quite confident, but more curious. Her aura of darkness seeps into the ground and a few rats look out of her coat, Suzanne cocking her head to the side as she pokes her head out from the shroud around her Mother.

"I regret the ability to not dispatch who I wish to be eradicated from existence is gone. And also from you, and anyone else. But... why does it matter to you, dear Death? Are you one of the worlds' Angels of Death or are you just a metaphor made whole?" Her eyes blink red, trying to pick up any magicks in the air around the being. How curious this one is... even rats come out of the shadows to come closer and sniff at the edges of the death-smelling Death.

Talk talk talk, lie, talk, talk, talk. She seemed unaware of her lie, or at least supremely confident in the truth of it, to her detriment, and continued to talk as though it were concrete fact. That problem would need to be rectified before she would be of any use, though whether she would be at all was completely up in the air, as Death was only here on hearsay, not on factual information himself. About to reply to her errenous statement about the deaths of individuals on this plane of existence, he was well and truly sidetracked for the first time since his arrival by what she said next. So to say, she threw a curveball.

If it were possible for a skeleton to stiffen, then that is what he did. Death stiffened, his whole seven foot frame going from unnaturally still to something... more. The black hole that was his presence on the psychic plane inflated slightly, as from his back wing shaped holes in the sky unfolded, stars twinkling far off in the distance within his wings, even though the two of them were underground. The rest of his form is completely unchanged as his voice again seems to come from everywhere, somehow more intent despite the fact that it sounds exactly the same and is the same volume as before.

I AM AZRAEL, ANGEL OF DEATH AND KEEPER OF THE BOAT. HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS WHEN NO ONE ELSE DOES?

Unaware of her 'lie' indeed, Death. If you do not get the picture, you will not last long on this Gamma.

Any good jumper of worlds should know to be a little bit flexible.

Well... she is talking to someone named "Death"...

This nut may be hard to crack. Is it even worth her time?

As for the knowing what this being is, that was a straight guess from a set of already observable facts, however the guy seems a bit put-off at the situation of her knowing. The Piper snickers. Well there's a way to get him to get it. She wisps away and appears at his side, a dark shroud still around her, and rats becoming more and more bold around the intruder.

"You see dear, where you are, all the worlds have melded into one simple system of data. I know OF a Death, and on my world his name is Josh. I know of the mythology of Azrael on my world and of his 'angel of death' status. You come from a different world than I but there are similarities. A simple thought process. I'm not sure if you know completely, nor could I understand in whole, but here there is a different reality. Where you are from? Completely destroyed and the beings of each world placed in this city called Portal Breach. If you don't get that, you are setting yourself up for eradication or simple idiotic condemnation by others."

She disappears from sight again and appears on a pipe, petting a group of rats in her lap. Her leather boots crossed in front of her and her dark visage rippling as if heat is coming off of her small form.

Nessa's blunt, yet still vague explanation might be all you get out of her, there Mortality.
