Further down the rabbit hole . . .

Post by Grodus on Wed Jul 09, 2014 10:28 pm

Grodus headed straight for the outer district after acquiring the co-ordinates that led in this direction, not knowing what he would end up finding out there. Still he pressed on, however, because just leaving whatever reward that was lying at the end of the trail for anyone else to find did not sit well with him. He'd started on this path, whatever it was would be his and his alone.

The technomage had been to the outer district a few times before in his explorations, the poor state of the buildings and streets were no surprise to him. For some reason the area seemed a bit bleaker than the other parts of the district than he ventured through before. Perhaps that was due to all the mayhem supposedly taking place here lately, according to the whispered rumors throughout the city. One would only have to lurk in the Sanctuary or any other place where people gathered to hear some of it.

The vagrants that were smart and wanted to keep their hides intact would begin to avoid the more contested areas of the outer district.

As for Grodus, well, he felt a number of stares center upon him from the shadows and dusty alleys as he walked. A brief display of flames or lightning was usually enough to send most onlookers scattering, though even after that he still felt he was being watched.

He expected to be fighting here, and as such he steeled himself as much as he could. Perhaps it wasn't wise to come directly here, damaged as he was, but it was either that or allow the trail to grow cold. If that happened, he might as well forget about ever finding the hidden rewards.

Another few steps and Grodus was closing on the co-ordinates given to him earlier. Again, more stares centered upon him, this time from the group of vagrants up ahead of him. They were hanging out roughly in the range of his current destination, so he supposed he would have to deal with them, one way or another. A brief scan only confirmed it, a handful of them seemed to have bits of tech well beyond their means. With that information in hand, he moved just close enough to have them in range of his spells. "You there. Some of you are in possession of technology far beyond your ken; where did you find it? Think carefully before you deny me; I am unafraid of killing one or all of you if the need arises . . ."

And who was this pudgy interloper?

Grodus had stumbled upon a den of wayward vagabonds, their clothing in tatters and overall appearance haggard. There must have been eight in total, a decent number to ward off the usual predator or rowdy gang member, and all were seemingly human. One of them, a particularly gruff individual in his late 40s and sporting an unkempt beard, approached the short technomagus with a lack of trepidation. The rest of his mates were not so bold, however. Several clung to the darkened overhangs of the alleyway and peered out with wide, glistening eyes.

"So, what? You just come up here and thinkin' we're gonna just tell you where we found them things after you've threatened ta take our lives?" He spat at the ground mere inches away from Grodus' feet, his saliva opaque and rife with traces of chewing tobacco. "Me an' the boys ain't telling you shit," he growled defiantly. "Now you can take your short ass out of our territory and go bother someone else."

Nothing like a little game of hardball, hmm?

Well, this was certainly the reception that Grodus expected from these sorts of people. He didn't really care, though. Fools like this who had managed to acquire a few strong magical trinkets or bits of technology always thought they were superior, that they were the kings and queens of whatever tiny piece of territory they held. That feeling of superiority always shattered in the face of true power, and the mage had a feeling that would be the case here as well.

Hmm, enough musing on the nature of peons like this who thought they were so tough, on to the beatdown. The lone vagrant bold enough to speak for the others, also seemed to be bold enough to spit at Grodus's feet. Luckily for the hobo, none of it actually ended up on the sorcerer's robes, if it had there most certainly would be a death on this fine afternoon.

Right now Grodus was feeling charitable enough to only beat on this fool until he coughed up the information . . . that might change as the fight went on, however. He might end up just killing this one, and getting what he wanted out of one of the others lurking around.

"Consider my words a warning . . . that you of course failed to heed. Oh well, with the day I've had so far, I am looking quite forward to hurting someone." That last sentence was spoken almost cheefully, but those were all the words Grodus offered before jumping back out of melee range and sending three gouts of flame at the fool before him.

"I don't need no stinkin' warnin'," mumbled the transient.
Imagine his surprise, however, when three searing fireballs came roaring his way.

Deftly the man avoided two out of three balls of flame, but the third managed to violently splash upon his chest. "Argh! I'm gonna pulverize ya, ya little potsticker!" Someone of lesser willpower would have crumpled to their knees and yielded, like the pathetic slobs that huddled in the back. This particular fellow, however? The man tore off his stained jacket and tossed it aside, his outerwear useless now that it was becoming nothing more than a fiery rag. "Looks like you owe me a new coat," he growled. Although his body had seen better days and he was bordering malnourished, the shaggy derelict was far from incapacitated. Muscle, lean and sinewy, grew taut beneath sun-damaged shoulders as calloused fists were raised. "And I'm thinkin' that robe o' yours will do just fine." Well, Grodus? Are you going to give it to him?

With a mighty shout the man defiantly charged, veins bulging and skin tightening around his neck. Watch out, because here comes three bare-knuckled blows aimed straight for your delicate cranium!

Well, Grodus had to give the old vagrant credit, he was a bit faster than he looked. Still the third blast of fire had tagged his opponent, setting the old man's jacket aflame. Lesser mortals probably would have run or begged for mercy by now, but not this guy, apparently.

Nope, not only did the raggedy old man threaten to take Grodus's robe, he roared in defiance and charged at the mage, aiming a series of punches at his head. There was something in that stubbornness to yield to be admired, reminded the sorcerer a bit of himself to be honest, but that still meant this guy was in his way. He wouldn't be having any of that, now would he?

Grodus dodged the first punch with more grace than one might expect from his frame, but the second looked like it was actually going to strike him--

Until the vagrant's fist slammed into the translucent green barrier that had just shimmered into place. The technomage's X creatures were hovering at his side now, defending their master as best they could. The last punch was deflected by Grodus's staff almost as an afterthought, and with that it was time for a counterattack.

"Oh, I'm sure you'll be able to find something else suitable for one of your kind in one of these abandoned storefronts around here . . . this robe is quite lovely, but only a mage of my own race is supposed to wear it. Now then, let's see if this will loosen that tongue of yours..."

Grodus focused his power into one of his favorite spells, feeling a bit of a rush as the negatively charged particles in the air responded to his call. Out of all the elements he could use, this was the one he was most attuned with. The old man would've felt the static electricity in the air slowly increasing, but that was all the warning he got as lightning crashed on the spot he was standing!

"What in the world...!?" Flesh met solidified energy, bones cracking and muscles tensing. "Ya damn pussy! Ya got yourself some kinda shield thing!" The vagrant stepped back and drew both fists back into a tight defensive formation to cover his vitals. "Hmph, I shoulda expected some yuppy know-it-all ta think that he can use fancy pieces of junk to win a fair man's fight," he mumbled. That wasn't the worst of it, however. Suddenly the air became charged, hairs standing on end, and the man noticed his whiskers unnaturally bristling. "What the...?"

    Kra-KOOOOW!

With a unified cry the other onlookers felt their hearts leap straight into their throats, many of them running for cover and not wanting to see much more. There were several, though, who peeked over their hiding spots and dared to observer further.

"Hngh... h-hn..." In the center of a smoldering mini-crater was a kneeling old man, his shoulders blistering and patches of his skin scorched into a frightening black. The smell of ozone filled the air and many thought he didn't have a prayer. Not the old man, though. Oh no, especially not the old man. He shakily rose back onto his feet and coughed, "Is that... is that all ya got?" Once again he drew his fists back up, eyes burning with determination. It was very likely that death was in his cards today, but you know what? If it wasn't death today, it was death tomorrow. This place was no haven for the outcast. "That's some fancy magic trick ya got there," he rasped, spreading out both feet. "It's a pity ya ain't got much more than that." How uncharacteristically... cryptic. Not bothering to elaborate further and wanting nothing more than to bash Grodus' smug glasses into reflective powder, the old man opened up with another foolhardy charge.

Three more blows, both to the technomagus' shield and ultimately its vulnerable owner further in!

For a few seconds, Grodus wondered if he may have overdone it a bit, but the old man continued to prove quite resilient indeed. It took the human a few moments to recover from that blast of lightning, and he looked to be fairly singed, but recover he did, again taking a fighting stance.

Dead Man Walking wrote:"It's a pity ya ain't got much more than that."

Somewhere behind those obscuring glasses, there may have been an eyetwitch, that comment putting a nice crack in Grodus's relatively calm facade thus far. "And what, exactly, is THAT supposed to mean?"

Yet another foolhardy charge forward, the old man punching at Grodus's barrier to still no avail, though the little creatures projecting it seemed to be growing weaker. The barrier still held at least, and that was all that mattered at the moment.

Irritated, and probably wanting to show off a bit more of his capabilities, Grodus sent one of his summons in to attack, and followed it up with another blast of flames.

"Is that all ya got!?" the old man snarled. He lithely dodged all of the technomagus' spells and little gadget-mebobber, Grodus' attacks messily crashing into the building wall behind their fight. "Exactly what I expected from a two-bit sonuvabitch who thinks he's got what it takes to grab life by the balls." Again the vagrant spat onto the asphalt, a forearm raised to wipe his cracked lips. "Whaddaya mean, what does it mean? You're the one with the brain exposed and flaunted about for all ta see. Why don't you tell me, Einstein? Or are ya just all smoke and mirrors?" Tit for tat, blow for blow. The old man would have more to say, much more, but he figured pounding his knuckles into the technomagus' fancy cranium ought to be enough. With a curt snort the bare-knuckled pugilist of the streets descended upon Grodus, a primal hunger yearning to see alien blood spilt.

Again, three more cruel blows to the technomagus' shield and, luck permitting, bespectacled face!

There was a faint growl from Grodus as the old man somehow managed to dodge his latest round of attacks. The lone X he sent out had to pull itself off the wall it crashed into, almost seeming to shake the dust from itself before gliding back to him. The mage couldn't help but make a snide remark in regards to his opponent's luck so far, as irritated as he was. "Hmmph, you are quite agile, but I suppose that is to be expected of a street rat..."

Again, the old man's words managed to strike a nerve, but fortunately for all involved, this was not earlier in the technomage's stay in this accursed place known as the Breach. Still his anger stirred, the nerve of this fool before him almost unbelievable. He was not at the point where he would be shaking with rage, though his proverbial hackles were starting to rise. "How preposterous. I do not have what it takes? Bah, I was about to crush a world beneath my heel when I was so rudely pulled to this place. Even after that, when I learned of what this gamma does to the strength of new arrivals, and that I had lost almost everything? I did not mope, I did not stand idly by; instead I set forth to discover the lay of the land and reclaim my power. I am certainly not at the top of my game as of yet, but mark my words, I will be."

After the latest set of punches, which his barrier still managed to take, Grodus reared back a bit, aiming his staff at the old fool who stood in his way. "Beating the answers I seek out of you is just another step towards my eventual return to glory..."

No more words were spoken as he let fly with three bolts from his staff!
