    Click!

Gnarled, clawed feet stepped out from the confines of a two-toned car. Despite the sunny, cloudless day, the asphalt almost seemed to cool as the rotten soles stepped onto it. His unnaturally tall form uncurled from the cramped position in the cab, standing so much taller than the lower set vehicle that it appeared nearly comical. Turning his sheep-skull head about to have a look at the loosely packed parking lot, he finally rested a massive palm on the car's roof  and leaned his head down to look into the cabin once more, directly at a small, barred box just above the steering wheel.

"We will likely be ssstaying here for the afternoon." He rasped, nodding his skull towards the massive structure they were parked beside. "You are free to move elsssewhere if you like, but return here by four at the latessst." In case their dear brother had plans that needed to be fulfilled. A pity he could not join them today, with all that work on perfecting the dead fluids. Maybe he could find a chemistry book that would aid his cause. Oh, speaking of which!

Mortis, leaned back into the cabin, taking the aged library card that rested on the dashboard. It was not exactly in his name, but there were ways of fixing that so the machines were none the wiser. Flipping open one of the pouched on his utility belt, the ghoul deposited the card inside and secured it with a click of the silver button fastening itself. With that, the ghoul turned to face the massive structure that was known as the library. Even on the outside its walls appeared to stretch on for miles. The likelihood of finding a few books for Fear was not possible, it was ensured.

Shambling up the steps in a fashion only befitting a corpse, Judge Mortis pushed open the doors and stepped inside. Unlike the spring chill outside, this place almost seemed cozy with its heated interior. Rows upon rows of books stretched on all the way to the back, which looked in itself hours of walking away. Perhaps a inconvenience to those that have not the interest of such a long walk, but the ghoul had years of patience under his bat-winged belt already.

Now then, where would the chemistry section be?

A pile of books were carefully cradled in one of Mortis' arms, ranging from biological weaponry to military tactics, and finally to chemistry and a book regarding both the overview and intricacies of bio-engineering. Although a small stack of literature, thin magazines, were held in the other. Easily able to peer over the pile of information, the ghoul's bony head swiveled about before noticing an empty table set back away from those who may interrupt his research. Small, wooden and round, a plush green chair sat pushed in next to it. Even better, no sinners appeared to be around in this area to interrupt him.

Gladly approaching the secluded seat, the Dark Judge set the small stack of magazines on the dark oak surface before pulling out the chair. He set the rest of his reading material on the table as he took a seat, joints creaking and his tail curling to the side to hang out from the space in the arm rest. Looking over the pile of information, Judge Mortis reached a claw out and idly rifled through the magazines before retrieving one that held the picture of a jungle environment on the cover, an odd insect being the focal point. Yes, this looked like a good place to start, he decided as flipped open the cover. The contents listed different discoveries from ancient tombs to forgotten civilizations, likely from earth from the look of it. What caught the ghoul's non-existent eye however was an article on page twenty-three, covering the wildlife of jungle environments.

Letting the glossy pages flow through his fingers, he flipped to the desired page. Immediately he was met with a splash page of rolling mountains covered in thick trees, the small shapes of birds flying in the distance. All of this was reminiscent in a way of that odd greenhouse he and Fear stumbled across during necropolis, was that what it was holding all this time before it had been destroyed? His gaze traveling down to the contrasting white text, the ghoul decided to read on...

Small fingers reached up and pried free the hardback covered book from the shelf, it's pastel cover glossy and shiny in the light. A little lamb, happily prancing across a green hill, the sun smiling down on it. Tucking the book under her arm Ttone tossed one brown braid over her shoulder and began to scan the shelves some more. Hmm....there were some really neat looking books! But she wasn't sure she wanted to read them yet, oh well, what would be the problem of taking one more book, or five. With her newly acquired stack of books Ttone looked around for a place to sit.

The children's section was certainly inviting, with all it's colorful bean bags and posters. But the thrill of going outside of her designated zone was just so tempting. Tally wasn't around, no one here could tell her what to do! She was a girl on the edge! Ttone took her books and set out, determine to find the best place to read, a place that was meant for adults! Like one with boring books all around it, yeah, no kid would ever sit there. But she was going to! She was going to take it over and rule it!

She carefully balanced her stack of books and traversed the shelves, searching for the perfect spot. Stepping out from behind one of the shelves she came to a sudden stop as she saw someone, or something, sitting down not far from where she was standing. They.....their head was a skull...

Ttone looked on, was this person dangerous? Or just odd looking?

The ghouls' attention was currently on a page of his magazine that focused on the image of a grotesque looking insect stretched out on a branch when the child came about. For the moment he was content to stay seated in his chair, armored knees requiring more space than the cramped chair and table provided. In fact, most of him seemed too tall to fit as he towered over the table even when sitting. Something tingling in the forefront of his mind made the ghoul glance up from his reading, however. An odorous presence of life stood in his vicinity, clutching a small book and staring at him expectantly.

Empty sockets met the child's curious expression. It was not hard to read the girl's intentions, deciding to venture beyond the realm of the children's reading section in favor of something different. The thrill, the excitement of believing that moving beyond their designated area, of breaking the rules whether they were hard coded or merely the guidelines of morality and social structure. Even in youth, the traits of a criminal were present. For a moment the ghoul's tail twitched, tempted to stamp out this budding sinner before they grew into an outright menace to themselves and others... Alas, with the laws of this city, such a choice of action would bring consequences and attention he would rather not face. Winding up in containment after only a few months on this miserable rock was not his definition of being proactive.

No, instead the ghoul let the magazine lay flat on the round, oak table, his claws tapping quietly on the sealed surface. "It issss impolite to ssstare, child." He rasped, keeping his voice down with the still air of the Library. Even so, there was still a scolding tone that made itself evident.

Strange man wrote: "It issss impolite to ssstare, child."

Ttone looked abashed, staring down at the floor before looking back up at the strange sheep headed man. "Sorry, she apologized and then, bravery returned, walked up to his table. "What are you reading?" She asked, peering at his reading material. The books in her own arms were beginning to get heavy and make her arms ache, so she pulled out a nearby chair and set them down on the seat.

"Can I sit here?" She asks, pulling out the other chair and looking at the sheep headed man expectantly. She'd like to sit down and keep talking with him, maybe even read her book. This table is nice and big too, so if he doesn't want her this close she can of course go to the other end. It wont be any problem for her.

    Sinner Child wrote:"Sorry,"

As she should be. Interrupting a Judge of the Law while they were doing important research could be tacked onto her charges, now three in place aside from disturbing the peace and being alive. His peace, that is. Content with her abashed look and apology for the moment, he gave a rough, approving grunt before flipping the magazine back into his rotten claws with a quiet rustle of glossy paper. Now then, what was this about flesh eating insects...

Grud Dammit wrote:"What are you reading?"

Glancing out of the corner of his eye socket, a tiny, curious face decided to peer over his books and magazines. Some titles were easy to read, such as Aircraft Mechanics: Jet Engines from 1942 and Onwards, The Art of War and Diseases, Germs and Viruses. However, there were others that were not so easy to sound out, such as Advanced Chemistry in Military Application, Bio-Engineering: Intricacies for the Advanced, and the all enjoyable Atomic Fusion: A History of Aggressive and Defensive Application. Among the thick-spined books were a few that appeared rather thin, a compiled book of scholarly journals and articles. Mortis' invisible gaze shifted between his hoard of information and the child standing next to him before replying, "Thingsss that you are too young to underssstand, child." He rasped, the ghoul's graveled voice seeming to linger in the air for a moment before the girl asked yet another question.

She wished to sit with him.

Already she was placing her books down in a chair while pulling out yet another one for sitting. "May you ssssit here." He corrected with a tired sigh. Whoever raised this child clearly had not taught her the proper methods of speech. how many charges had she racked up onto her sentence already? Five now it seemed with the obstruction of a perfectly usable chair and a second charge of disturbing the Judge's peace.

"I would rather sssit alone." Came his hushed response. "Why not go and find othersss of your own age to sssit with, they may enjoy your company. Better yet, go find your parentsss." He suggested patiently after a brief pause. Lieutenant or not, he was no ones babysitter!

Ttone still looked on expectantly as she waited for the Judges answer.

Strange man wrote:"Thingsss that you are too young to underssstand, child."

At this the child took up a defense for herself. "My teacher says i'm pretty smart," And indeed she was, but the judge was no doubt right about his reading material being a bit too advanced for her. The strange man corrected her speech and ttone replied in kind. "May I sit here?" She asked, correcting her speech as he had.

The strange man wrote:"I would rather sssit alone."Why not go and find othersss of your own age to sssit with, they may enjoy your company. Better yet, go find your parentsss."

"I can be quiet, really." She wouldn't bother him if she sat here, she just didn't want to read in the kids section. "There aren't many here, and my mom's not here right now. Tally knew that the library, being in the middle of the city, was safe from attack as it was under the ISO's protection. And Ttone was not about to walk off with anyone, not even this strange man, even if he did have a cool looking head.

Not everything mentors say are true, child. This the ghoul knew, and merely let forth a small detached sigh before replying, "Indeed." While he was well aware of the phrase; 'you cannot judge a fish's intellect by its ability to climb a tree', common sense appeared to be a universal means of intelligence that did not require any special tutoring. Common sense that this child appeared to lack.

The Dark Judge's attire did not scream anything suitable for a child to be around, his black leather uniform riddled with holes from rot, a skeletal bird of some sort on his right shoulder and a decayed ribs of a mantle on his right. Not even his hands were free from decay, as tiny bumps and holes could be seen clearly in the green, taught flesh of his hands. Despite these obvious details, the child still insisted on sitting at his table after taking the grammatical lesson to heart.

Again the ghoul pondered over the child's naive and surprisingly idiotic reasoning for continuing to attempt to sit at his table when there were plenty available. A glimpse into the mind revealed all... Of course, the child lived in the city limits so likely they presumed sanctuary within the ISO jurisdiction. No, this tiny being did not continue to insist on stupidity alone, she did so out of knowing that she could and literally nothing ill would befall her so long as she remained in the city limits. Even if they failed, her guardian was powerful, a veteran sinner of this world.

    How privileged of her.

"Of courssse you can be quiet." The ghoul's graveled voice replied, "You would not be allowed here if you could not be ssssilent. Librariesss have very ssstrict rulesss of what one can and cannot do." He would leave that to stew in the child's mind, for his own thoughts were already starting to head elsewhere. If the child had a powerful guardian, likely they knew others of power as well... A curse and a boon all in one. Yes, his brother likely knew all of them already, but it was always good to do some additional research. Who had the strongest ties, which could be broken with but a wave of the hand.

And which ones lead to far more interesting subjects.

He could merely read all he wished from her young, open psyche... But to do so would require more time, and it was time that made the Dark Judge decide. "However, I sssuppossse I could let you sssit at thisss table. You appear behaved enough." He rasped, the joints of his wrist crackling as he gestured with a hand for her to sit in the chair opposite of him. All the while, his gaze still seemed fixed on the nature magazine. As the extended hand returned to supporting the limply curling edge of the glossy print, one final statement whispered through the still air.

    "...Jussst thisss once."

If the ghoul was so skilled and thorough with his searching, could he also see then who Ttone's Guardian might be? That was sure to bring back some wonderful memories. But perhaps Mortis was better off not knowing, and therefore, not remembering. Unless he was secretly into that.

The Stranger wrote:"Of courssse you can be quiet. You would not be allowed here if you could not be ssssilent. Librariesss have very ssstrict rulesss of what one can and cannot do."

Nothing really there to stew. Ttone knew she could be quiet, and she knew the rules of the library. This stranger bringing it up only affirmed that he knew the rules as well.

The Stranger wrote:"However, I sssuppossse I could let you sssit at thisss table. You appear behaved enough. ...Jussst thisss once.

Ttone beamed and climbed up into the chair. "Thank you. I'm Ttone." She said and then lifted a large book from her pile, the cover flashed with it's bright colors and the face of the little lamb smiled oh so serenely at the Judge.

Alas, Mortis was not quite to the level of power his brother accomplished. Give the undead Judge enough time and he may find the answer before little Ttone went home for the day. As she sat down, the child went insofar as to introduce herself, although the ghoul read her name clearly from the confines of her mind. Regardless, Mortis gave his own hissing reply to her introduction, "You may call me Judge Mortisss."

The book she procured from the pile next to her briefly caught his eye. A smiling caricature of a sheep on a bright, cheerful background. Ugh, what a repelling visage. Was this what children's books were like nowadays? Adjusting the nature magazine in his claws, the Dark Judge turned his gaze back to the text and focused his mind on the young child. Flipping the page, he was met with a glossy fold out map, labeled with highlighted areas of the particular featured rain forest. Particular insects, flora and fauna were imposed over the vast expanse of tress and winding jungle rivers. A pity the child's mind was not so expansive with memories.

A few years or so, the Judge noted. This one was particularly young. However that also meant many of her memories were fresh, accurate down to a detail far clearer than her elders. Speaking of which... Letting an exploratory tendril worm itself a little deeper, it appeared the child's guardian was none other than Tally Stevens. Yes, the ghoul remembered this woman well, stalwart in her argument that he and his brother would fail in their goal, that their doctrine would not last. His grip on the thin pages tightened somewhat. A typical sinner response, to be sure, stubborn denial was common even with the living of Mega-City One. All that she needed was a little... convincing.

What else did this child know about her mysterious guardian?

Mortis was an odd sounding name, but not like a bad odd, just an odd odd. Ttone extended one hand enthusiastically towards "Mortis". "Nice to meet you. She waited for the judge to shake her hand, not even caring that his skin was smelly and probably felt a cooked hot dog.

As for expansive memories, Mortis must be looking in the wrong places. Ttone had quite a few memories. In fact he had better be careful actually. All Mortis had do was push a bit deeper and he would find a far nastier side to things. Her mother lost. Arriving in Portal Breach and being alone in a world with no laws. No Police, no system, no safety unless in numbers or because there was not quite someone who would lay a hand on a child. Only people doing what they wanted, when they wanted.

Deeper still and Zombies, the undead walking and eating people. A heavy fog filled with monsters that shambled like things out of nightmares. Haunted books and a giant man ripping the planet in half.

Finding a new mother, then her mother finding a father. Excitement at being told she was going to be a big sister. Fear when her new mother disappeared, confusion when her baby sister came back but her mother didn't. Being unable to comprehend and understand what it meant when some people whispered about how her new father had taken her baby sister and left her in the house alone. Anger about being left behind.

    Fear, about being left again.

Tally smelled like flowers, and sometimes after she worked out she smelled like sweat or pennies. Tally liked to go off on adventures into the wild, but didn't leave for too long anymore because she didn't want to leave Ttone alone. She'd make Ttone mac and cheese and made sure that Ttone attended what little excuse of a school that there was. She tucked her in at night and made sure she brushed her teeth. She use to do experiments in the house, and made sure Ttone knew not to use certain pots and pans, but all that stuff had just suddenly been moved.

Tally worked with Zurg and Mr. Rasa, and Ttone liked them both, she was happy. But she was also afraid. "After you're done reading that, do you want to read lamby pamby namby with me?" She asked

At the ghoul's introduction, Ttone extended an enthusiastic hand towards him in the interests of a handshake. His own hands, green with rot and littered with holes and decaying pustules, was hardly what he would consider something worth interest in grasping, much less shaking in greeting. His empty socketed gaze flicking between her tiny hand and his magazine, the Dark Judge unfortunately would have to decline such pleasantries. "Indeed." He rasped, keeping his hands upon the magazine as he flipped to another page. Tribal natives posing in front of their village graced this glossy section, dressed in little more than leather loin cloths and practical apparel for hunting and gathering.

As he continued to read on in the article, the undead Judge also read on in the girl's mind. Memories were gently picked through and observed each one, noting that this child held quite a turbulent past upon this world. Nastiness and discomforting thoughts were nothing new to the centuries old Psi, the lives of thousands, millions passing through his clawed fingertips and sentenced all the same. She would be no different. Adopted, loved and abandoned. Only her sister had returned from the void but her mother failed, the abandonment of her younger sister by a negligent father. Abandonment hung hatefully in her mind, the lingering scars of the irresponsible who had taken care of her. So this was how children were cared for during the earlier years of this land, where it was as lawless as the Cursed Earth, if not more so.

All the more reason this place needed desperately to be purged.

As for this Tally, the scent of flowers, sweat and copper graced his thoughts. A woman who ventured into the wild regularly, likely on her own. A responsible parent who fed clothed and ensured her child went to school... But what was this? Household experiments, certain household objects that were not to be used for cooking. All of which had recently been moved. He pushed a little deeper into this aspect. What sort of experiments did this woman hold in the same home as her child?

Outside of odd hobbies, Tally of course ensured Ttone's health and home through a vocation alongside faces familiar and non. Tally's flowery scent originated from her place of work, a flower shop filled with many assortments of sweet smelling plants. The large purple man was of course Zurg, the very one that Fear had encountered during his first few days upon this miserable rock. Rasa was not so familiar, a hulking creature that looked more beast than man. In a certain way he reminded him of a Klegg. More happiness and of course more fear. Fear of being abandoned all over again after having found such a content home. Such trepidations were hardly worth pondering, the ghoul's hands itching all the more just to rid this girl of her fears, allow her peace of mind in death. However, his claws stayed their place upon his reading material, instead interested in who else the woman had as friends.

She had to know some people outside of the workplace, correct? Some likely visited while the child was still around, and so the ghoul's psychic tendrils began to idly shift through faces, looking for those that appeared to hold some amount of worth to the child's adoptive mother.

Hmm? wrote:"After you're done reading that, do you want to read lamby pamby namby with me?"

Looking up from his magazine, the ghoul once more beheld the visage of the smiling sheep upon the colorful cover of the child's book. "Can you not read to yourssself like a big girl?" He rasped, flipping the magazine's page once having read his fill of the tribal people. Native fishes and aquatic wildlife were illustrated in mid swim upon this one, each detailed with facts about them and their habits.

Mr. Mortis did not shake her hand, and her smile faltered a little at his decline. Still, she doesn't let it get her down too much! So what if Mr. Mortis doesn't want to shake her hand, some people dont like to touch others, it's just how they are. Some people are afraid of germs! Ttone can understand, and she doesn't judge.

The digger Mortis digs the more he uncovers. Ttone doesn't know what Tally was doing exactly, she knows that it involves plants, and that Tally would go out into the forest and bring all sorts of weird looking stuff back. Tally loves her plants, and would even tell Ttone some of their names and show them to her. Ttone knows that Tally grew all of them in her room, and whatever she made she kept stored away in her closet, which she kept locked.

And of course Ttone knew other people! She knew Sonia! Who was one of Tallys best friends, Ttone had known her for a long time too, though, she was different now compared to how she used to be. Tally said it was because she had lost something, but wouldn't tell her much more than that, so Ttone didn't push the subject. Sonia had a whole bunch of lobsters, and they were pretty fun to play with, provided that they didn't pinch.

Other than Sonia Ttone also knew Kat, and her two dads Leo and Alex. Leo was Sonia's brother, and had been a cop but had retired with the rest of the police. She knew Kev too! And Skyler and Livewire! She also knew Mr. Zurg, who watched her sometimes and who she had known for awhile. She also knew Mr. Bloodscream! He was a little weird, he spoke funny and looked scary, but he'd never been mean to her.

A lot of people she use to know where gone now though, they'd all disappeared, like her Enna and Vlad.

Mortis asked her if she couldn't read by herself, Ttone just shook her head. "I can! I was just asking if you wanted to read with me."

    Yes of course, the germs.

Within the child's mind, Mortis' unseen claws dug a little deeper his efforts not without reward. While the child did not know exactly what Tally did with the plants, she did bring back certain ones and tell her the names. Odd specimens, some that Mortis had not witnessed before glided into his ethereal vision. Some she would show the child and teach her the names, along with keeping them within her room's closet. Not exactly the most responsible place to store exotic plant-life, likely the reason it had been suddenly moved.

The ghoul made a mental note, continuing to gently pry as he read over his magazine. A woman by the name of Sonia became visible, along with images of a vast horde of lobsters... Either they were friendly or this Sonia woman had influence over them if they did not usually pinch. Although it appeared this woman was also different from how she normally was. Perhaps more sad, given Tally had mentioned to her that she lost something? Either way, this child's relationships were steadily growing more intriguing with every press further. Especially since one of the names within her memory the ghoul had come across before.

Albeit through Judge Fear's own memories.

Bloodscream stood out among the group, retired policemen and their child not bearing much interest from the ghoul. Zurg was familiar through the same means as the pale immortal, and Kev, well... He was quite familiar with the green alien already. Regardless, history was important, and while the retired policemen were not of much value currently, perhaps there was some form of usefulness he had overlooked. Immediately his sights turned with interest towards Leo and Alex, with Bloodscream being his second target of intrigue as he looked deeper. Two names, long since dead had appeared among them as well, although the ghoul could figure that he would learn nothing of use from them.

This world proved to be changing far too quickly for ancient history to be of much relevance.

Again the child spoke up, pressing if the Judge wished to read with her. For a moment the ghoul remained silent, his talons slowly tapping upon the page of his magazine thoughtfully. If this child held so many interesting acquaintances, would it truly be wise to snub her innocent desire to read a simple book? Indeed, this could be the only time that they cross paths, especially if she tells her guardian of who she was with... but there were ways of remedying that. "Read with you..." He hissed thoughtfully, almost as if evaluating his prior response. "Perhapssss I had been missstaken then. You may read with me if you wisssh, ssso long asss we keep our voicess down." He replied, flipping through to the next page of his magazine, this one showing vast ruins of an ancient civilization. Zigurats towered into the sky, small glints of precious metals showing through the overgrowth of vines. Oh, but what was this? His eyes went down to an particularly interesting part of this article...

Occult practices, human sacrifices, barbaric weapons that only a sadist could design. Oh, yes, he would take some time to study this page indeed.

The list was vast! Skyler, Livewire, Overcast, Mr Swindle, Keaton, Mr Zim, she had been here for years, and her young mind had experienced much. She knew a lot of people, though most were now gone. At the very base of her memories of people was her mother, but the memory was older, and faded. A sad thing, but such was how time treated memories.

Concerning Bloodscream and Leo and Alex though. Judge Mortis would be able to see that Ttone had only known Bloodscream as a nicer old man, who had for a time been Tally's good friend. She didn't see him much anymore though. Alex and Leo were Kat's dads, Alex said the F word a lot, and use to be a big blonde werewolf. But then he got better. Leo had use to be on the police force with Mr. Hellboy. But something had happened and the police force wasn't around anymore. Now the city had the ISO's, who Ttone guessed were nice. She had never really met one.

At Judge Mortis's approval Ttone beamed and moved chairs so that she was sitting next to him. She opened the book so he could see the pages, little lambs prancing in the fields. Okay sure the book was a little childish, but it was one of her favorites, she could still like it. Even if she was ten.

"Baa Baa," said Lamby. "What a pretty day."
"Baa Baa," said Pamby. "For sure, the sun is bright."
"Baa Baa," said Namby. "For sure, the grass is green."

Ttone read in a hushed voice, oblivious to occult symbols and ritualistic sacrifice.
