    Dead Man Hanging

Post by Xavier Valiante on Sun Jun 22, 2014 7:59 pm

    Time: 1:30 am
    Date: May 11th

Time had passed at its normal rate for everyone but to the hanging man, it had felt like countless hours had passed. He had no way to tell time besides counting it and that would be a waste of energy. The mutilated assassin had been suspended in the air too long to get an accurate read on the current time. It would be pointless to start now.

Xavier was left to stew in his own juices. In all honesty, he was kind of asking for this to happen. Boasting about being the best assassin back home, looking for work, even thinking about starting up his own business. Well bud, you aren’t on Earth anymore where all your targets were humans. This is Portal, where its inhabitants vary from ordinary humans to stuff of nightmares and dreams. You are nothing more than a greenhorn here. Eyeless and mute, his body refused to let him pass out. The soothing touch of unconsciousness was hovering above his mind but never touched down. Whatever Fear had pour on him was standing in its way.

“Fucking bastard…” The biometal man only had his thoughts now. “Maybe I’ll get lucky… and a psychopath will come along and end my misery…”

Typically he would be doing everything to stay alive but in his current condition, death was better than living. Xavier would never stoop to end his own life though. That was one of a few things he would never do, along with revealing his client’s identity and intentionally looking for trouble. The state of this world would allow him to come back exactly how he was when he arrived here. He wouldn’t seek out this solution every time though. It is death and death is only suppose to be a punishment.

A single rat sniffs at the pole from which Xavier floats. It blinks a few times and sniffs voraciously at the smell of open wounds. The creature is larger than most rats, about arms length, and the smell it leaves behind is the scent of viscera and gore. It stays in the shadows, its glowing red eyes searching the area for anyone nearby. Slowly, the congregation ensues.

Every couple of seconds the two beady red dots turned to four, and then to eight, and then thirty-two. Eventually every shadow in the area had become littered with black dots.

They sit silent, as if waiting on a command. They all turn towards two rats that had come out into the light, a blonde one and a very small white one. They sport the same coloured eyes as the rest. The white rat blinks to the blonde one, who sits on its haunches like a queen... or a Mother. A very human grin appears on its face and she blinks as she turns away from the scene.

The sound of a flute plays... No song in particular to the boy hanging from a pole. But the screams of thousands of rats and what seems like human voices play behind it.

    Gut essen, liebe Kinder...

The rats open their mouths before they even move, hissing loudly and suddenly making noise. Up until then, it had been deadly quiet. They crawl up the pole like a mass of insects, using eachother like a ladder until they reach the boy's bonds, moments had him falling into the pool of writhing vermin. The smell of gore, sewer, and fecalmatter is overwhelming, but they care not. Mommy said eat food, and they violently obey.

They start pulling him towards the closest sewer grate, but not before a good third of his leg is gnawed clean. No matter what the boy is made of, the magically enhanced rats' appetites are far more strong than any metal. Their teeth burn like hot irons as they feed and drag him into the sewer. More and more rats rapidly appear out of the darkness, wanting their share of the dinner. Almost breakfast even! After eating through legs, they quickly move on to arms and torso... if he isn't dead now, he'll be dead soon, and the flesh will be all gone due to that lovely system in place that has them disappear when they die. But the rats know, just like their Mother knows. So they are careful to keep him living as they eat. They finally pull his carcass down into the sewer grate, not much meat on him but the stuff keeping him fully living. The Swarm ate too fast for him to bleed out any more. In fact the whole event lasts no longer than two seconds.

The swarm feasts well tonight, as long as the music on the wind plays...

By the time they are done, the Mother has left, taking a leisurely stroll in the woods. She has other things to prepare this night.

The wreak of filthy and refuge drifted by Xavier’s lips. Something foul was around him but it definitely was not Judge Fear or any of his brethren. A random hobo walking by? He thought. It was the Outer Districts, many filthy beings and animals lived here. Maybe a few dogs are waiting to see if I drop or not… Great, chewed a live by dogs, again. Xavier was looking forward to that.

These thoughts vanished as the sound of a flute entered his ear. Was a blind man setting up shop beside me? …Am I becoming a theatrical spectacle? That annoyed Xavier. He hated being in front of a lot of people especially when he was dangling from a lamppost like a piñata. Oh God, please don’t let Fear set up a ‘Beat the Sinner’ shop.

Hisses entered the flute’s nameless song. Hisses from rodents. No. No. No. No. No. NO! Rodents were never good. Rats were usually a bad sign for the assassin. It meant he would have to get filthy. By the number of hisses, Xavier figured there were several hundred rats around him. Who or what could be control that many rats? Were they all attracted by Xavier’s festering wounds?

As the rodents began climb, the biometal human could hear the tapping of claws against metal. They were climbing… Climbing the pole… Why were they climbing the pole? Why am I being pulled down? What are these rodents doing?

Then came the fun part, the gnawing. The little buggers were starting to bite into Xavier’s carbon enforced skin. They broke through it like nothing. A few of them even crawled into the open wounds and began chewing on his bones. Wordless shrieks of agony and terror rang through the streets. This was exceedingly worse than the dogs. There had only been a few dogs attacked Xavier. There countless rats eating him now. It was like a nightmare coming true. The assassin was slowly being consumed a live. He didn’t thrash or try to fight back. If this was to be his death, then so be it. He didn’t need to hide his pain. The rats only wanted food, not the pleasure of his screams.

Xavier’s voice became hoarse and slowly died away like him. Finally the numbing arms of death wrapped around him and took him. The life force left his body, only leaving a lifeless corpse chalk full of minerals and metals for the rats to feast on.

    What a delightful concept, fear.

The air reeked of it, Portal City's outer district bathed in sweat and blood. Absolutely tantalizing to the senses. Nearby and having arrived just in time to witness a good show, two golden eyes peered out from the darkness of the city's underbelly. Ah, the Queen of Vermin... Her mischief made quick work of the brutalized man. Very good, very good. Noting the man's agony and dread was a welcome highlight to any given hour. This was the only positive aspect of the evening, however.

A black cat, its coat silky and plush, left the safety of its obscured viewing place and quietly crossed the street. No one was around at this hour, and if they were? The likelihood that they were up to no good was quite likely. The cat was not occupied with the outer district's ne'er-do-wells, however.

    "Purr, purr, purr..."

Who had done this? Who thought to wield terror and commit war in its name? For a moment the ominous feline remained content to sit upon its furry haunches, lazily blinking every so often. Something had been here, yes... A familiar scent not unlike the many corpses it was so intimate with. So... the false champion thinks to liberate these sinful mortals and believe his work good. Didn't they all? The cat faintly huffed and began to lick a paw, blood cleaned from its fur. A pity, it thought, for these wicked few are beyond salvation. And no angels were here to protect the damned.

Finished here, the cat left the bloodied lamppost and faded off into the hazy night with a flick of its tail. It had much work to oversee and its plans were on the brink of completion. Let the souls of Portal City slumber for a while longer...

It will soon be their last.
