    Mission: 001

Post by Xavier Valiante on Sun Apr 27, 2014 8:24 pm

    Time: Midnight
    Date: April 19th

The sky was dark with only a few clouds drifting across it. It was cool and crisp with no wind. Xavier raced across the rooftops silently. His new armor didn’t make a sound and helped him blend in with the darkness. Xavier figured Fear would be able to sense him so he would have to strike fast. There would be no margin for error but where are the vital spots on an undead being? He remembered almost ripping the psycho apart in the Sanctuary and nothing fazed him. Of course death didn’t occur in the Sanctuary. That’s one of the main reasons why Xavier lived there but how could he kill the ghoul?

Well, Fear’s head and neck are protected by a thick metal helm so maybe if I behead him… Xavier thought as he leapt to nearby roof. But what if that didn’t work? I could stab him in the heart. That’s how the undead are killed in the movies. What if I can’t take him out in one blow? What will I have to do then? He began planning out in full as he dropped into a dark alley. He was now in the Outer District. He wasn’t going to take any unnecessary risks: Take Fear out then go straight back to the city. No lollygagging. No messing around. Just find the target and get out.

The assassin had checked out several spots but this one felt like it was going to be the crime scene. It was a large concrete drain like the ones under several over passes and had pipes that fed into. Most of the pipes were dry except two that had a small stream flowing. The place reeked of garbage and filth so incase Fear used his sense of smell, he wouldn’t be able to smell Xavier. There were also a few homeless men lying down on mattresses or sitting around a fire. It was low to use these guys as bait but Xavier had job to do. He wouldn’t harm them but he figured Judge Fear would come by and ‘purge’ them of their ‘sin.’ His new obsidian armor helped the assassin blend into the shadows and darkness perfect as he crept around the edge to hide in one of the dry pipes. Now all he had to do was sit and wait for the target to present itself.

The sky was very dark indeed... Unbeknownst to the homeless that had called this pit of filth home, the sky above will prove to be their last.

Fire... Such a warm and inviting tool of ingenuity, was it not? Fire produced light, light produced warmth; both conveniences were enough to keep the darkness and cold at bay. What a shame it would be, then, to have one's source of protection callously snuffed out.

In the corners of this miserable place did the shadows begin to writhe. It was subtle at first, hardly noticeable with the flickering flame, but give it time... Give it time, for the children of the night were going to claim what was rightfully theirs. One of the vagrants, a man no older than his mid-forties and desperately needing a clean shave, had thought to wake up from a late nap. He stretched and he groaned to swear about how the world owed him, along with other such similar delusions. Those around him paid no attention and considered this to be an everyday occurrence, some even gruffly requesting that he stuffed it. He, likewise, ranted off many choice insults before finally heading off to relieve his bladder for the evening. It would seem that things had settled down for now, although...

Mumbling and concentrating on his business, the irritable transient picked up his head as he heard something off in the distance.

    ...rattle!

Once did he demand who was there, spitting onto the ground. Nothing but darkness stared back at him and he eventually shrugged. Probably just a few teenagers going about their nightly romps through town, he thought. That was, however, until he heard the strange noise yet again.

    ...rattle!

There was a second demand out of the man, this time his tone indicative of rising annoyance. Louder now and ignoring the sound of drizzling urine, he turned at the waist to inform others that someone was coming. As usual, no one believed them. There were a few disinterested coughs and bored stares, but not much else. Fine, he grumbled. Let those sluggish fools think he was experiencing one of his flashbacks or whatever medical excuse the doctors spoon-fed them. He knew what he heard, alright. He knew it wasn't just something in his head. Grunting, he turned back to stare into the endless shadows to see if he could make out any shapes. No, he reckoned. It was far too dark and his eyes weren't as keen as they had used to be. Eh, maybe it was just the wind and he needed a good shot of whiskey. Yes, that was it. Finished, the man bounced in his step and zipped up, pivoting on his heels to face the others. That was his first and last mistake.

    CRUNCH!

No shout. No warning. Blood sprayed into the air like a fine mist as silver teeth clamped upon the man's unsuspecting torso, a dark and reddish fluid dribbling out of his agape mouth. Screams, nothing but screams filled the air and those closest to the darkened alleyway immediately ran from it; a few had their faces and clothing marred with wet, crimson stains.

As quickly as this hungry beast had struck it just as swiftly vanished, teeth disappearing back into the night with its prize.

The howls. Oh, the howls of fright and suffering as the man was violently torn asunder. Clothing ripped and bones snapped, the loud twisting and pulling of muscle and sinew clear enough for anyone to hear. It went on for seconds, minutes; no one helped him as he screamed and screamed for aid. No one, not a soul... Silence finally gripped the lone alleyway and the audible carnage ceased, the beast and its prey quiet.

All that could be heard were the terrified whimpers and ragged breaths of the remaining homeless afraid for their very lives, the lone flame in the center of their home crackling; a beacon in the darkness to come... How wise of them to press their backs against a nearby wall, their bodies huddling together in numbers as if to frighten away another attack.

And how ignorant of them to think that there was strength in numbers. Wait, what was that...?

Ejected from the alleyway and hurdling through the chilly air, a lone projectile of sorts flew. It landed near the fire with a nauseating squelch and rolled several paces forward. It was no bomb or mere debris, however.

More terrified screams, more jerking bodies. It had been the man's head, rendered so cruelly from the rest of his body, as the bulging whites of his eyes stared at those who had abandoned him to his fate. As the discarded body part laid there bleeding, a new nightmare was soon to come. The homeless had effectively been corralled into one location, like dimwitted cattle, and thus their fates had been sealed.

    ...rattle, rattle, rattle!

    Silence, and then...

    Darkness.

Without warning the fire went out and the night once more reigned supreme. Without warning the fire went out, the homeless no longer protected by the light and warmth. Without warning the fire went out and so did their hopes for survival... The shadows descended upon them within the blink of an eye.

    SPLURCH! RRRRIP! CRRRRK!

Chaos ensued as something attacked within the darkness' shroud, screams uniting with the sounds of bodies effortlessly being torn apart. Oh how they fought... Oh how they tried to run... All was useless in the end. The shadows dined upon their warm blood and flesh, an entire ten seconds devoted to this twisted bloodbath. How anyone could listen to such violence and do nothing was beyond imaginable. These were living beings, no matter the creed and race, and they were being slaughtered like mere livestock. Soon the shrieks of terror and pain ceased, however, and no more did this filth-stained alleyway echo with the din of butchery.

    Silence, and then...

    Light.

The lone fire miraculously revived itself and the shadows rapidly dispersed, although what they had left in their savage wake...

Pieces. Nothing but pieces remained and in every which way. Feet, hands, entrails and organs... What did it matter? What did it honestly matter, for this entire alleyway had been painted with blood. Nothing stirred and only the flame's snapping embers replaced the breathing, the coughing, the life that had once filled this neglected space. Embers, and the lone figure that had mysteriously appeared in their rebirth.

A tall and thin man, covered in metal and dark fabrics, remained standing near the fire; something glinted upon his chest. Motionlessly did this presence linger with his feeble hands held out, upturned. There, glistening and wet, lay a thick coating of blood that stained sharpened fingertips; healthy, fresh.

    He did not stay forever.

Wordlessly the armoured man turned around and proceeded to leave, his cape softly fluttering. He needed to be elsewhere.

    Rattle... rattle... rattle...

    And so did his chains.

Xavier watched silently as Fear carried out his crusade. He knew how low it was to use the lives of the homeless as bait but the job had to be done. His mind wasn’t focusing on moral views it was in military mode. All the biometal man was thinking about was the target in front of him. That’s all that mattered at the moment. The lives of the hobos had served a purpose now. He did wish their passing had been less gruesome though. He would make sure they didn’t die in vain.

Quietly drawing one of the obsidian daggers, Xavier threw it with deadly accuracy at the center of the Judge’s back. But that wasn’t it that would just be a set up for a later attack. He then leapt from this spot with a dagger in hand. He would land silently right behind this victim and attempt to severe Fear’s upper body from his lower at the waist in a single sweeping blow. If you can’t kill someone in blow, divide them in half. It would be effective but the trade off was that it would look like an obvious homicide. No matter if the first knife hit or if he cut Fear’s body in half, Xavier sent a kick to the lawman’s upper back. He didn’t want to stay within range for the Judge to use those mantraps on him as he jumped back into the shadows with daggers still in hand. They were held backhand for defensive purposes. Since is attire was completely black, Xavier would blend in easily with any form of darkness.

Yes this would be an obvious time for Fear’s counterstrike if he survived or could move but Xavier was mentally and physically ready for anything the undead corpse was going to throw at him. Taking mental note of his current surroundings, he began formulating his next few assaults. The fire could be handy if Fear’s body was flammable. If he tries to extinguish it, then I’ll consider it a weakness to him. Xavier remained quiet. Now was not the time for talking or witty catchphrase, it was murder time.

    And what have we here?

With inhuman alacrity the Dark Judge swiveled upon his leathery heels and deflected Xavier's first dagger as if it were nothing more than a fly. Effortlessly swatted away, the feather-light blade loudly clattered against a nearby brick wall and became out of arm's reach. "You dare assssault a Judge of the law?" hissed an indignant ghoul. Needless to say, the boy had officially wasted his element of surprise and a sickly feeling rushed to overcome him. "Xavier..." If Judge Fear could bare a smile to the world he surely would have. "Xavier, Xavier, Xavier... Are you making an attempt on my unlife?" Of course the boy was, because not long after yet another dagger thought to split the undead fiend in two. This was, of course, nothing more than some assassin's wildest fantasy.

The Dark Judge had not been torn in half, let alone damaged, as the ghoul's uniform was much sturdier than it appeared. Judge Fear deftly avoided his would-be assailant's kick and proved far more lithe than the average corpse. "Sssloppy," he chided mockingly. "Isss thisss how you performed in your old universsse? You leave much to be desssired." And you thought to hide within the shadows, did you?

When will sinners learn that an effective Judge of the law did not rely on sight alone to dispense justice?

It mattered not what colour the boy's current outfit was; so long as Xavier lived and breathed Judge Fear could track the sinner's every movement. Ethereal eyes stared directly into the darkness and became transfixed with Xavier's, bloodied feet standing near the crackling fire. "You think to ssscurry within the night and avoid my jussst retribution like sssome filthy vermin?" the ghoul rhetorically inquired. Had the boy not been paying attention when Judge Fear had purged those aimless vagabonds in complete shadow? Apparently not, and the Dark Judge loudly scoffed at his naive foe. "Very well, then. I will dissspatch of your ignorant husssk and sssee to your judgement, for your ssstupidity is a threat even to yourssself. Come, Xavier Valiante... It isss time for you to rejoice in death!" Come, because your fate had been sealed long ago!

A deathly-thin arm upraised, the air within the alleyway rippled as Judge Fear's psychic influence radiated far and wide. I can sssmell your fear, Xavier... whispered a nauseating voice in the void. Face me and give up, boy. You cannot kill what doesss not live. Give up and submit!

You are terrible Xavier! You can do much better than that! He scorned himself. He was the best assassin the military had ever trained and yet here he was, only able to get one attack to land against an open target. You are getting sloppy! You didn’t even manage to cut him in half! He threw another dagger at Fear as he tried to become a moving target by hopping around randomly on his feet. It was then when Fear raised an arm. Here it comes! Xavier braced himself for the painful bite of a mantrap but it never came.

A strange sensation washed over him. What is this feeling? He shook his head to clear his mind. It worked for a brief moment but sickening thoughts began to fill his mind. Thoughts of death filled his thoughts but not just anyone’s death, his own death. It felt like someone was slowly choking him. What is this power? He tried to shake it again but no luck this time. I-I’m gonna die… I’m gonna die! He grabbed his temples and shook his head back and forth violently.

Whatever he did this time must’ve worked. The malicious feeling vanished. Xavier stood up slowly and carefully. A few beads of sweat slid down the side of his face. That was intense… That must be Judge Fear’s power… Shit, I wish I had that. It would make my life a whole hell of a lot easier. He smirked as he raced towards the Judge. What he did next was a first… he actually spoke while in assassin mode, “I can do much better! It’s just this damn world that weakened me!” Got to protect his pride of being a master assassin. He drew one more dagger. Leaping into the air, he tried bringing one leg down unto the Judge’s shoulder. He twisted in the air and tried to stab Fear in the heart. He was trying his best to just break that leather outfit and get down to his skin.

And I can do much better than that. Only a glancing blow done to the boy, this miserable whelp? Disgusted with himself and this world's meddling, Judge Fear relinquished his hold over Xavier's mind. The would-be assassin had managed to shake it off, anyway. As much as the Dark Judge wished to savour the trepidation he had caused within his current victim, the ghoul knew better than to celebrate a victory too early. He was not called Judge Death, after all. Once more the boy could breathe and feel comfortable in his own skin, but not for long. Oh, not for long indeed.

    Pling!

Xavier's dagger hit its mark but the blade had lacked a sufficient force behind it. Ergo, the weapon bounced off one of Judge Fear's mantrap pauldrons and joined its useless cousin in the battle's peripherals. "Have you not been lissstening to a word I've been sssaying?" the undead fiend heckled, mildly incredulous. "You cannot kill what doesss not live. Why isss thisss hard for you to grasssp?"

Another whirling blow, this time a kick, and Judge Fear felt one of his encumbered shoulders buckle with a bone-jarring crunch. Instantly he stepped aside and managed to avoid being stabbed in the art, although the ghoul now proceeded to limp as if he were a wounded animal. "Your armour..." he noticed. "You sssought out enchanted armour to harm the undead?" Growling now, Judge Fear audibly displayed his rising irritation and concern. Could it be that the wielder of fear itself was afraid...? Perhaps, but he would not reveal his innermost thoughts so easily. Without missing a beat and possessing of none, Judge Fear reached for something along his utility belt. "No matter," he hissed. "Whatever protection you ssseek to employ will not sssave you. I will have your life on thisss day, Xavier. You cannot essscape your crimesss forever!" And no amount of blessed armour or weaponry will defeat an immortal spirit on this day.

Mindful of his wounded shoulder, Judge Fear took a tremendous leap backward and threw an unknown object at his opponent. "Fly, my Little One! Ssshow thisss sinner the door on hisss way out from thisss life." It was none other than a shrunken head, one of several the Dark Judge carried around his belt!

"You got it, Boss!" Eager to see action after ten agonizing years, the chipper body part flew to Xavier with a wide smile. "Hey, toots! You like explosions?"

    BOOM!

What the hell? Xavier brought his arms up to protect his face. Fear had thrown something and it talked! Man this guy was the definition of creepy. In a second, the object lit up then exploded into a ball of fire and light. The force almost knocked the assassin off his feet. The heat slightly burned his skin but it was the light that had the most effect. Xavier’s eyes had become so used to the darkness that the flash blinded him of a moment. The force of the blast also had a lasting effect. In an enclosed place like this, it funneled the shockwave towards him.

Xavier took a few staggering steps. He was in no condition to fight right now. He could feel the sickening thoughts creeping back into his head. That would cripple him even more and that’s the last thing he needed. He could always try to escape and strike at a different time but that wouldn’t be possible until his ears stopped ringing and could see clearly. At least he saw his kick land and the effect it had on the target. This armor did seem to harm the undead greatly. Good. I just need to survive until I can escape. Doing his best to move into a defensive position, a dark sapphire blade slide out from Xavier’s wrists on each arm. These might not hurt the undead but they took less movement to draw. All he could do now is hope he’ll survive.

    Onyx Armor:
A black, glossy outer armor that fits like a glove upon the wearer with optimal mobility and a few added tricks.

While Xavier is wearing the armor, his HP, AP and DP are raised to the same tier as that of a level 10 character. When attacking, Xavier can use the 6-10 die for his attacks, but his powers are still limited to that of his current level.

And still the boy remained upright in one piece, able to defy him?

Either that armour was more than just for show or the Dark Judge needed to reconsider allowing his Little Ones more action. "Sss..." Enough of this insolence! Judge Fear harshly twisted his wounded shoulder back into its socket and didn't so much as flinch, bones loudly grinding against one another. No matter what damage the boy unleashed upon this rotten vessel, it would not be enough to stop an immortal spirit. Indeed, why was the assassin even bothering to resist? "There isss no essscape, Xavier. Lay down your weapon and I may consssider offering you a ssswift demissse." But if not... There was a chilling rattle of metal links as the ghoul retrieved a mantrap off his hip, its silver teeth having already tasted blood not long ago. "But if not, I will make sssure your death isss asss agonizing asss judicially posssssible," the undead fiend promised. And considering Xavier had not only assaulted a Judge but had also attempted murder, Judge Fear was going to throw the book at him.

Or, in this case, a bloodstained mantrap. The Dark Judge whipped his chain up high and overhead, letting it arc with a noisy clatter as it scrapped against the alleyway's brick walls. Sparks flew and so did those snapping teeth, the ghoul having every intention of catching himself another sinner tonight.

Don't try to eat this, Xavier. You'll only be consuming death itself.

To give and admit defeat or keep fighting? Xavier thought. If I gave up, it would mean certain death but if I kept fighting, I might have a chance of fleeing with his life. I have a feeling that this guy’s definition of ‘swift’ has no mentioning of painless. Especially since I’ve tried to kill him. He let out a small chuckle and grinned. If this guy couldn't escape, he would be going down with a fight.

Xavier tried rushing at Fear but he was still out of sorts. His head began to spin causing him to stop and close his eyes. Bad move buddy. Something metal and sharp bit into his right shoulder. What the? He opened his eyes to see a bloodied mantrap clamped to him. Oh this can’t be good. The teeth were attached firmly to his armor and caused it to dig into Xavier’s skin. The biometal human sighed with relief. So glad that didn’t break my skin. He tried removing it but to no avail. That suck was firmly attached to him now.

In a last ditch effort, Xavier tried to jam one of his wrist blades into the links of the chain but his arms were weakened and in a lot of pain. The burns from the blast made it hard to move anything that had exposed skin. What to do? What to do? Xavier’s face became solid and emotionless. There was only one thing to do…

Chuckling? The boy thought to entertain the Dark Judge's generosity with chuckling?

"The defenssse hasss been noted." Very well, then. Judge Fear had much preferred this answer and quickly began reeling in his squirming prize. Oh the multitude of ways he could skin you, sinner. Shall he stop your wicked heart with but one stare, leaning upon a classic? Or should he try something inventive and make you experience a horror like no other? Since the would-be assassin with lead for brains had so rudely dismissed the ghoul's offer, Judge Fear was all too happy in choosing the latter. "You think to accept your fate with a ssstony face?" the Dark Judge observed, quite skeptical. Only one man would dare scowl in the face of justice and that, frankly, was not this pathetic excuse of a boy.

The ghoul hands were close enough and he reached down to grasp Xavier's neck with cold, lifeless fingers. Let him get a good look at you, sinner. Judge Fear effortlessly raised his victim high into the air, Xavier brought closer to the fire's glow. "Sss..." So this was the fool who thought to take down a Judge... Not very much to stare at, was he? Curious and perhaps wishing to appraise this mortal, the Dark Judge nonchalantly rotated Xavier's head left and then right.

Hmph, and this was the best the boy could do? The ghoul was almost insulted.

"You fighting ssspirit isss admirable," Judge Fear's booming voice echoed throughout these tight quarters. "It will not, however, sssave you. Xavier Valiante, for your assssault and attempted murder upon a Judge of the law I hereby pronounce you guilty. The crime isss life and the sssentence isss death." Judge, jury, and now... executioner. Judgement officially given, the ghoul proceeded with the due process of the law. After all, criminals were afforded a fair and speedy trial were they not? It should come to no surprise, then, for what the Dark Judge was about to do. Xavier still very much in his icy-cold clutches, Judge Fear glanced over his shoulder and eagerly drew the boy's face closer to the blaze. Good, good... He wanted to see the fear reflected in your eyes as your emotionless facade melted way. "I cleanssse you in the name of the law, sssinner." A pity that you had not accepted his kindness when given the chance.

    SSSSSS!
