The Death Sword brought down its heavy blade without any hesitation or intention for mercy, but although it did not connect with the devastating fury that it had hoped to inflict, it at the very least had nicked the swordsman’s left arm. Any hit was better than nothing, and so long as it could chip away at their life force, time would enable it to emerge from this encounter victoriously.

With its blade barely following through to the ground though, the Death Sword soon hiss-gasped in surprise, finding that its opponent had pushed through the attack with a counter! Thankfully, the motion did not land any damage, but on the downside, it put him in a better position to strike back! Both subsequent slashed connected right across its body, and no sooner had it started to assess that damage than had it wound up taking a pair of ice spears in the back!

Four… how had they managed four strong AND successful hits against it?! Roaring in both pain and disbelief that they had somehow started to chip away into even more of its health reserves as well as its closely guarded secret, the Death Sword rocketed upwards, unleashing an ethereal howl and throwing its arms to the sides. No! It was not about to lose to the likes of these two! With rage evident in its demeanor and a more erratic sense about it, the Death Sword circled about the room even more quickly, soon charging forward with another attempted sword strike. This one was also aimed at the swordsman, for if it could take him out, then only one blade could stand regardless of the other’s counterparts.

Unable to suppress a grin at Korra’s confident exclamation, Sokka was soon set to take her own attack round into his observations to see if he could finish figuring out this thing’s weakness. Every enemy had to have one, no matter how small or insignificant it might seem. Some were easy to figure out, others weren’t, but Sokka and Korra were nothing if not resilient. Whilst his own counter to the Death Sword’s attack had missed, at the very least, he knew for a fact that his other two strikes had connected with resounding satisfaction. If he didn’t know any better… then that was it.

“I’m all right!” Sokka called out to Korra now that he had a chance to properly do so, just as soon as two of her own ice spears struck through the demon. Now THAT was a nice combo attack! Whilst her third one that followed them up appeared to sail through the Death Sword, from where he was standing just underneath it, he could tell the sort of impact she had had. If his own vantage point had not been enough, the demon’s reaction was all the indication that he needed. They had had hurt it and hurt it bad, and now it was desperate to try and end this before they did.

As the Death Sword shot upward, Sokka kept his blue eyes trained on it. All the same, he could not help but grin the slightest bit at Korra’s question. “Oh yeah… my counter failed to connect, but it got me into a better position, and I got two good hits in, the same as you. Korra… I think I’ve figured it out! We can only damage this thing when it’s attacking us!” It all made sense now! Any time it had been an easy target, their attacks had gone right through it. Whenever it had stood their with its blade ready but not trying to defend itself, they couldn’t touch it! But if they attacked it when it was attacking them, they could force it to make itself tangible, and thus susceptible to damage. “Think of each attack you’ve had connect… it was attacking! We just need to time things right, and we should take it down before we know it!”

Little did they know they would have a chance to continue to whittle away at its life force even before they expected. With the Death Sword enraged, its movements became much swifter, and its patience had appeared to have dissipated some. It shot back down to the main floor of the room, circling about  as it had before albeit with much greater speed. Raising its blade, Sokka barely had time to widen his eyes before the massive sword came down, catching him squarely across his left arm and torso again. “ARGH!” Okay, that one was much stronger than the last… it hurt like hell, but Sokka was not about to slow down. They were so close!

Growling through the pain, he steadied his stance and stepped forward, throwing three more sword slashes at the monster. Come on… they could do this! He knew they could!

Korra let out a brief sigh of relief once Sokka confirmed that he was okay. Sheepishly, she wondered if she should wait to ask him that until he actually seemed to be hurt... Turning the icicles back around on the creature, Korra couldn't hold back her grin as two of them seemed to connect! One flew right through, just as it had last time, the other two following with a bit of delay as the sharp ice had connected with...well, whatever this thing had! Making a triumphant fist, the Avatar glanced at her friend as the freaky thing roared in anger. "I think we upset him!" She teased lightly, the grin on her face displaying her shameless victory in getting such a reaction from a frightening creature. A tantrum was on the horizon, their opponent lifting up into the air and howling like a spiritual polar bear dog. Her teeth grit tightly, her battle stance the only thing that kept her from clamping her hands over her ears.

“Korra… I think I’ve figured it out! We can only damage this thing when it’s attacking us!”

What?! Korra turned to stare at her friend, confused for a moment. Could that really be...? It was definitely pretty strange, for a ghostly creature to only be injured when it was trying to attack. Yet she considered Sokka's words with a small nod. Anytime either of them seemed to have actually hit this thing, it was in the middle of attacking one of them! "Right! If we can aim it just right..." They should be able to attack it when it was in the middle of attacking them! Especially since it seemed to be focusing on Sokka throughout this fight, that left a wide window for Korra to shoot for. As the creature circled like an enraged vulture, Korra took a step closer to her friend, hands busy. As though she were looping and threading through the air, her hand movements nudged and guided at the water to form a firm tendril yet again.

Charging toward them, the creature brought down its sword. Blue eyes catching the blade as it made its way down to her friend, Korra let out a soft grunt as she released the tendril to strike out towards the ghoulish thing. A whip made out of water, she attempted to slash at it as the blade connected into Sokka hard enough to make him yell out. Grimacing, she looked to her friend. Before she could ask if he was alright, Sokka was already charging forward to slice with his sword. Giving him a small nod, her hands moved in small circles as she readied her water whip once again. If they could switch between the two of them, each attacking one at a time, they'd have to hit it at some point when it was attacking! Waiting for her opening, she stood back in a defensive stance.

The Death Sword’s erratic movements enabled it to get in a strong, difficult to track attack, but even as it slashed into the warrior’s torso and arm, they were still ready to fight. What was unexpected though was the sudden water whip that caught it as it was following through with its attack! Both sharp strikes stung, but it no matter. Its attack was still true, and it still had its strength. Nothing could withstand its ethereal might… nothing.

The Avatar had not managed to prevent the attack from harming her companion, but she had temporarily incapacitated the Death Sword. With the point of its sword stuck firmly in the ground, the demon knelt, panting heavily in an attempt to catch its strength. It knew this was dangerous… but it could hardly move right now. Had it really expended as much energy as it felt? No! That was impossible! Maybe they wouldn’t strike now since they felt they had discovered its weakness… but no such luck. With itself down from the Avatar’s attack, the demon found the warrior set to attempt a strike again! No… this warrior would not get the chance if he could help it! He knew he had to get up, or at least make the strikes harder to land. The first blow landed hard and true, causing the demon to reel back, sparing just enough room to dodge the second. Hissing in aggravation at the first and the audacity of the second that whizzed by, the Death Sword’s actions froze as the final blow connected. No. No No NO!!

Growling fiercely, the Death Sword dropped its weapon in favor of grabbing its skull-like head. It gargled and let out another series of unearth noises, trying to deny what it knew was true. With the last of its strength, and the final spurt of pain coursing through its body, it threw its head back. With its skeletal arms out to the sides, it let out one long, final roar… the cry only lasted several seconds, but it seemed as though it was longer…

With no strength left inside of it, the Death Sword burst into a dark cloud, just before that cloud began to buzz violently. The swarm of locusts contained within it shot upward, as though they were attempting to fly straight through the ceiling, only to disappear, noises and all, into another dark cloud. Moments later, after the final buzz had ceased, the room was clear… and the door before them lit up. Its blue glow accompanied the telltale sound of it unlocking. The heroes had been victorious against this challenge.

Sokka knew that he and Korra were experts at attacking in tandem now, but even though he was never surprised with she assisted him with one of his attacks or used his own actions as an assist, he was still not expecting to see the sudden whip of water shoot out just before the Death Sword brought its blade down. She had not knocked the weapon off target, but she had damaged their enemy, and he was thrilled for that! Even with the injury he sustained from this latest slash, he was still happy for that, and even more for the fact that she had rendered it helpless for the moment! He had a second to modify his own planned attack, and he fully intended to take advantage of that!

“Thanks for setting that up… I’ll take it from here!” Swordsman to swordsman, Sokka was set to finish this. His own body still ached, but he still threw everything he had into his trio of slashes. Korra gave him a perfect chance, and he was going to take it!

Only his second slash missed, and even then, that was only due to accidental overcompensation from where he had been injured coupled with the demon reeling back. It was only after his third strike hit that Sokka realized he was actually bleeding now, but that realization soon took a back seat as the Death Sword dropped its weapon. Gripping his own sword, Sokka stumbled back, eyes wide as he watched the demon grab its head. The unearthly growling picked up even more… had… had they won? It had been difficult to gauge their progress in this fight, but if this was really it… then he was ready for whenever he could breathe out a sigh of relief!

Sure enough, the Death Sword was set to let out its final death cry, which saw it throwing its head and arms back with a loud roar, and as soon as that noise tapered, it combusted… into a… dark cloud? No… this was a condensed swarm of bugs! Sokka widened his eyes and got ready to double back, but before he could move, the cloud rocketed upward, until every single insect had disappeared into a dark cloud, which soon vanished on is own. With that climactic finish over, the exit finally became apparent… only then did Sokka let out a that sigh. He was so glad that battle was finished… this one even more than the others!

Thankfully, despite the strength of the previous attack, his latest wound did not seem to be that deep, but he was still quick to clutch his torso and keep his injured arm steady. Turning to Korra with a broad smile, he said, “Hey… way to go! We sure showed that thing!”

Korra smirked, watching one whip after another strike the beast! After so much struggling just to get to this point, it seems the two of them had finally found their window of opportunity. They had this thing's weakness pegged! Defensive position struck, the smirk melted into a firm frown as she stared the ghoulish thing down. Every muscle was tense. For now, the thing was down upon its knees with a sword in the ground. Looked like a win if she ever saw one! "It was my pleasure!" She called back to her friend. As Sokka brought down his sword, Korra readied herself to jump into the fight! CLANG went the first strike, sending the spirit back enough to avoid the second strike. Aggravated, it hissed like an angry cat but was otherwise powerless to do anything else as Sokka's last attack hit its mark!

Backing up a step as well, her bright blue eyes narrowed at the spirit as the weapon fell away from it and clattered to the cave floor. Grasping its head, the ghoulish thing seemed to be in great pain. The noises coming from it sent the hair on the back of her neck rising up! Preparing herself for a dying attack, the shadow creature threw its head back and let out a devastating roar that seemed to echo in her skull. Its body burst into a dark cloud, buzzing obnoxiously as it seemed to turn into a swarm of insects! Korra raised both hands in preparation for some swatting, and Naga snapped her jaws in the air! The swarm rose up to the ceiling, disappearing into another puff of ebony smoke...and then there was silence. No more buzzing or roaring, any trace of the being seemingly gone. At least, the door lit up with a blue glow and they could hear the lock inside click.

Sighing in relief, she finally dropped her defensive stance to face her friend once again. Despite his smiles and upbeat attitude, Korra did not miss the way he was clutching his chest, not how he carried his arm. Brows narrowed seriously, she didn't immediately respond as the water that had formed her water whip floated to her hands and coated them like liquid gloves. They began to glow as she rested her hands over Sokka's, at the spot where he was holding his own torso. Tapping into his chi, she used her waterbending to pull forth energy to the wound. Water sloshed softly as she worked, before finally the Avatar stepped away from him. Hands moving as if pulling a rope, she wound the water back into a waterskin as she finally grinned back at her friend. "Great job figuring out its weakness, Sokka! Once we figured that out, that thing was a goner. Though I hope whatever lies ahead for us won't be so...freaky." Korra turned towards the door, regarding it with a wary eye. Being forced to see two of her best friends again, only to have them ripped away? That was pretty bad.

    Waterbending Heal

--A sub-skill of Waterbending is the ability to redirecting chi in the body by using water, redirecting the chi to the wounded part of a person to speed up the healing process. Korra was taught this skill be her waterbending master, Katara, who is a well known healer.

Specifics: The heal could be used on Korra herself, but only on parts of her she'd be able to access, such as her hands and arms, and the like. However, the most common use of this skill is to heal others during a battle. It does not work on scarred over wounds or internal injuries, it seems to mainly work on broken bones and physical surface wounds, such as stab wounds or burns. The heal only works on organics, trying to heal a robot most likely won't work. Cannot attack during a heal. Must be near the person to be healed in order to heal them.

Can roll up to two die according to Korra's present level. Once she gets to level 30 she can roll up to three. There is a 5 turn recharge before Korra can use her heal again. Costs 5 ap.

Post by Sokka on Mon Jan 30, 2017 11:41 pm

Sokka’s body was sore from the injuries as well as the latest round of physical exertion, but his spirits were still high, only boosting once he saw Korra drop her own defensive stance. He knew that they had faced a lot and likely had a little more to go, but he was confident that they could make it… after all, they were together, and the two of them could face anything. That stood even if any of those things could force them to experience what they just had… in the back of his mind, the warrior hoped that wherever Suki was, that she was safe.

As Korra looked to him, Sokka managed to keep his smile through his pain, the expression only relaxing slightly when he saw the serious look in his best friend’s eyes. Sure, they had just come out of a pretty harrowing fight, and an unwelcome mental ordeal before it, but he was still glad that they had made it through… battles were tough, but this was one he could smile about. Many weren’t, and in his years of experience thus far, Sokka would take whatever post-battle smiles he could get. “Hey, come on… I’m all right, really. Just… just a little cut up.”

Before he could say much else though, Korra had already beckoned the water forth from where she had had it as a water whip, calling it to coat her hands like a pair of loose, liquid gloves. It was a sight that Sokka was very familiar with, but even with the actions that typically led to him seeing it (i.e. one of them being injured), he was always glad to see it. His expression softened as he shifted his focus to watch the Avatar work her healing prowess across his arm and torso, and as he felt the pain start to ebb along with the water itself, his expression softened.

Waterbending as healing was something that Sokka definitely thought was cool, and more than that, it was special to him given how adept at it his sister had been. She had been a master at it, using it on him, Aang, and the others more times than he could recall… and in the future of their world, she had passed that training on to Korra. Katara had long since become a waterbending master, and along with the arts she shared with their fellow Southern Water Tribe native, healing had been right up there with them. Korra had wound up using this art on him before since they had both arrived in this world, and it had not been too long after that first instance that Sokka had reflected deeply on it… in a very strong sense, he felt closer to Katara this way, and of course, closer to Korra. He had that bond with his sister, and that only augmented the bond he now had with his best friend. It meant a lot to him, and as Korra worked to heal his newest wounds, not for the first time, it almost felt as though Katara was helping heal him in her own way. Indirect as it might have been, Sokka was grateful for it, and more than ever, he was positive that Korra was the best friend he could have asked for.

Once she soothed his pain and stemmed the injuries as best she could, Sokka signed a bit in relief as she pulled the water back into her waterskin. Korra returned his previous broad smile with a grin of her own, and delayed as it was, Sokka only felt even better at seeing it. “Heh, thanks! It was tricky, but when the two of us are up against something, not giving up helps out in that!” Through observation comes information, and when that comes into play, this warrior/strategist was set to use it! As for whatever came next… Sokka’s expression quirked a bit as he agreed. “Ah, yeah… definitely… hopefully that was the only challenge like that.”

Now that that had settled, Sokka relaxed his arm from where he had been holding it across his frame. With a quick glance across his arm and torso, and of course a few gentle moments of his arm, he turned back to Korra, nodding to her with another smile. “Thank you… that helped a lot.”

Sokka's attempt to reassure her drew a small snort from the young Avatar, a smile quirking at her lips. With hands enveloped in water, Korra pressed her palms to his injuries. A light glow emanated, lighting up their faces as her smile turned into a smirk. "A little cut up...you still need healing before we keep going. Just in case we come up against another monster." The both of them needed to be at their best health, particularly since they had no idea what was ahead. Silence came upon them both as she worked, mending bruises and pain. The flow of Sokka's chi eventually indicated that he was healed up well enough for now. She pulled her hands away from him, refilled her waterskin and eventually rested her elbows upon her knees. Huffing softly as she felt a bit of fatigue, Korra nevertheless shook it off to grin at her friend. "With our heads put together, there's not much we can't fight off!" A platypus bear, a racer, this ghostly figure...so far it all had managed to be defeated!

Korra could definitely do without anymore mental tricks though. Anything else would be preferred. Punching, kicking, magic, mazes, more puzzles... Just no more hallucinations of lost friends. "Yeah...I know what you mean." Maybe when they were free from this cave, they could talk about their shared visions and decompress from what they had seen and the emotions that had been drummed up. Until then, at least she could heal his physical wounds. At the thanks, she nodded her head and smiled. "You were hurt more than I was. I'd rather heal you while I have a chance than...regret it later." Her smile became a little strained, avoiding his gaze for a moment before turning to the mysterious door. "I wonder how many more rooms we have to go through...?"

Despite the way that it had softened, Sokka’s reassuring smile shifted more into grin territory as he finally got Korra’s expression to go from an unable to be contained snort to a distinct smirk. “Yeah… you’re right, and I really appreciate it.” Whilst he did voice his gratitude, the Water Tribe warrior had even more evident in his blue eyes, and he hoped that the Avatar understood just how grateful he was on all levels. Once Korra finished up her healing process, Sokka glanced down to better assess himself, finding that the pain from his injuries had definitely lessened. He was still a little scuffed up on the surface, but the worst of the damage had been mitigated, and he definitely felt rejuvenated on that front.

As Korra found a grin around her own recovery, Sokka simply met it with one of his own and a playful wink. “You know it! Team Avatar will always win!” He knew they could prevail against anything, whether it was a challenge in this cave or anything they happened to meet outside of it. They had proven it back in their own world in their own respective times more times than he could think about, and they had already done the same on the Breach. No matter what laid ahead of them, as much of a realist as he was, Sokka was convinced that they could find a way through it.

Whilst the two friends took a few more moments to recover from the exhausting battle and experience before that, Sokka soon let his arm drop from his torso, flexing it a bit as he felt even more just how much better both parts of his body felt now. Returning Korra’s nod with one of his own, Sokka’s expression softened once more as the full meaning behind her words sank in. He knew it wouldn’t do them any good to dwell on something so serious, regardless as to how true it was, so for the time being, he simply placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. Catching her gaze, Sokka stated, “It’s all right… I’m tougher than that, and nothing’s going to happen to either of us. We know how to watch out for each other.” He was determined to make sure that there were no regrets to be had, and that stood regardless of the temporary nature of death here.

Following Korra’s gaze, Sokka found himself wondering the same thing. “Yeah, same here… after this room though? I have a feeling that it’s not that many more. … Come on.” At that, he started to lead the way out the door, sighing a bit in relief once they found themselves in another simple hallway.

Sokka's gratitude made Korra smile. Healing had always been a skill she was rather proud of, since it wasn't quite so popular as waterbending itself. Learning it from Katara, a renowned healer that was well-known in her own world, also added to her confidence in her abilities. Being disconnected from it for so long here felt absolutely awful. It truly made the familiar tingle of chi flowing beneath her hands that much more comfortable and familiar. "Anytime, Sokka." As the young man looked himself over to assess the damage, she joined him in looking his body up and down. Healing with water wasn't a 'cure-all' for injuries but it was great for alleviating pain. He still carried some surface damage but it wouldn't hurt him as much as before, and his body was already on the path of healing itself up. They just had to hope that the path onward wouldn't put them through the physical ringer.

A small chuckle came from the young Avatar as she returned the wink. "Yeah! Past or present, no matter where we are, Team Avatar wins in the end!" Granted, this was probably the smallest Team Avatar, but it was no less great! Before they knew it, the both of them were going to make it to the end of this massive cave, get back their original bodies, and gain this power thing! There was nothing she was more certain of.

Korra's body became a little tense, avoiding his gaze for the moment. They had been through worse, but there had not been many opponents like that strange sword spirit. What would have happened if they hadn't figured out how to beat it? Sokka had been the one taking the brunt of the damage from that thing...a hand settled upon her shoulder, the Avatar stiffening for a moment. Catching his gaze, she redirected her gaze to his own blue eyes and stared back at her friend as he reassured her. So long as they had each other's back, the water tribe warrior insisted that they would be fine. No matter who they would face. Slowly, she began to smile. "Two warriors from the Water Tribe can't be beat, right?" As long as they had each other, Korra reminded herself. If they were together, they would get out of this place in one piece. A deep breath was all it took for her to relax again, readying herself.

"I hope so." The young woman agreed with a slight grimace. The curse here was definitely making them work to break it! Patting herself down for a moment, Korra pulled herself into a standing position and began to follow him out, narrowing her eyes at the walls of the hallway. Time to see what lies ahead for them.
