The Death Sword was none too pleased that it had been discovered, and it was even more aggravated that this big, white beast had managed to dish out some damage to it. That should have been impossible! There was only a very specific way that it could be harmed, and somehow, she had managed to hit it at just the right moment. Still… she did not seem to realize just how much she had capitalized on its one weakness, so hopefully it would still have the upper hand in this battle. That much held true even as the two humans finally came to their senses and joined the beast at her sides.

Making sure to hold its form in both its lack of corporeality as well as its stance with its mighty weapon, the Death Sword carefully studied its opponents, starting to steadily strafe around them. Floating in the air, it saw that it just might have a good chance to strike… the one with the sword was maintaining a defensive stance. That was all well and good, and meant that it could set up a perfect counter before too long…

The Avatar on the other hand decided to take this chance to go on the offensive. Very bold indeed, and the strategy was certainly a little unexpected. As she pulled water from the pouch she held, she effectively punched it forward, just before sending the liquid towards it, and in turn freezing the liquid midair.

Hissing, the Death Sword phased out, hoping to negate at least some of the damage. A good chunk of the ice did manage to go through it, but the second barrage of icicles met the edge of its sword as it swung it down to smash them away. That had been a good attack, and an even better one to help it set up a counterattack.

Swooping around to the side, it swing its sword back up, hoping to at the very least knock the swordsman out of his stance, and hopefully damage him in the process as well.

Korra was just as confused over the strange, ethereal monster before them as he was. Good, that confirmed even more that she was just now seeing it too and it had not been fighting her whilst he’d been preoccupied with what may or may not have been real. Still, he had to agree with her assessment of it. “You’re telling me…” He had seen some strange spirits back in their world and even stranger creatures here, but this apparition definitely hit very high on the list of those that sent a chill down his spine. “Whether it came from a nightmare or not, it’s definitely real here.”

As the two friends moved to flank Naga’s position, Sokka gave a quick nod as Korra confirmed that she as all right. He was more than fine for the two of them to properly catch up once they dispatched this thing, but knowing that the Avatar and her companion were safe definitely galvanized him. “Sounds fine to me. Let’s send this thing back to dreamland!” Or wherever it came from! Either way, Sokka did not have a good feeling about this thing, as as far as he was concerned, the sooner they could take care of this enemy, the better.

As Sokka held his defensive stance, Korra was set to throw a freezing, piercing barrage of icicles right at it. He narrowed his eyes slightly, watching the attack fly, and finding himself a little unnerved by the way that this monster seemed to about as intangible as a spirit… he supposed it made sense, but it meant that they’d have to be pretty sharp here. Unlike with some enemies, Sokka could not tell just how effective Korra’s attack had been; this enemy appeared to be capable of avoiding or at least negating some damage, but whether it had been injured by the ice or not though, he felt good about that exchange, especially with the way it decided to retaliate.

Sokka was already bracing himself for whatever might come as soon as the Death Sword flew around, but he was not expecting it to catch him with a close range upwards strike. "AARGH!" The attack broke Sokka’s stance, slashed through the shoulder of haori, and landed a nice blow in between his collar and shoulder. Even with as much as that had hurt, the warrior kept his weapon in hand, tightening his grip on his space sword to both bounce back as well as to focus away from the pain. It was fine, it was fine… it hurt, but he’d taken way, way worse before.

Winding his arms back around from where they’d been sent up by the guard break, Sokka could have sworn that this thing almost looked a little more tangible for the moment… either way, he was not about to pass up this opportunity to attack. Swinging upwards himself, Sokka followed up with a back and forth horizontal strike, hoping to damage this thing before he took a couple of steps back.

Sokka seemed to know about as much as she did. Well, this would be a story to tell one day. Korra was still rather discombobulated about the vision of her friends... Mako and Bolin felt so real..sounded so real. The Avatar could almost assume she had merely fallen asleep, except... Sokka had called out Suki's name. This had to be some weird...mental...mind control mumbo jumbo! Her fists clenched tightly, lowering herself in a defensive position. "If it's real, that means we'll really be able to kick its tail!" Nodding back to Sokka, she gave him a wide smirk. "You've got it!" Whatever it was, it was going to regret using images of their loved ones!

Icy spears flew towards the creature, and they seemed to slip right on through its body. Not exactly in a way that seemed painful, either... It was as if Korra had attempted to strike smoke, ice merely floating on through to stab into the ground and wall behind it. Her face fell, eyes widening as her chin dropped in shock. Alright...maybe she should have been ready for that. It did look like a spirit, after all. More icicles came towards the nightmarish thing, and this time it moved to strike the ice and block it with the sword. The ice bounced off and Korra waved both hands in a sweeping gesture to influence the icicles to avoid striking any of her friends. It didn't look any worse for wear, and the Avatar grimaced. "Alright, maybe ice isn't the ticket!"

Moving swiftly, faster than any airbender, the frightening thing came around and charged at Sokka from the side. Wielding the sword aloft, it struck him somewhere along the upper torso. Her fingers twitched, curling tightly as she stared at the scene. "Sokka!" Naga's back arched, fur raising along her hackles as she bared her fangs threateningly with a growl. Though the monster pushed Sokka back and snapped him out of his stance, Sokka recovered quickly. With several quick strikes at it, Korra jumped into the fray as the watertribe warrior backed away.

Water bobbed behind her as she charged, following diligently. As Korra's boots skidded along the ground, her arms moved around her body to pull the little floating orbs of water closer. Moving her hands in an almost circular motion, she formed a tendril that she soon stretched to elongate it. All of this happening in mere seconds, she stretched the length of it out to snap against the front of the ghost.

    WHAP! WHAP! WHAP!

Despite its fleshless face and expressionless maw, the Death Sword nearly appeared to have a pleased sneer as its upward strike not only hit its mark but did respectable damage to the swordsman. There might have been two wielding swords here, but only one was the Death Sword, and only one could deal death with their weapon. The broken stance gave the monster a good chance to ready its own position, steadying its sword for a follow up attack.

The two humans were still carrying far too much life-force within them, and the great white beast was no exception. They might have been able to chip into its one weakness, but their own success would be short-lived. Attacks were only effective against it if they struck at just the right moment, and it doubted that they would be able to figure out precisely what that was in the very short time they had left. Even if they did, their end would be near.

No sooner had the Death Sword steadied its hovering position than did it find itself hit with a horizontal sword strike and an annoyingly sharp whip of water. Letting out an unearthly hiss at the two quick attack volleys, the ghost shifted back to its intangible state just before the other two water strikes could connect. Oh no, it was not about to take any more of that than it needed to!

Growling in irritation, the Death Sword backed up and swooped around again, still floating back and forth mostly out of reach as it studied its potential targets for its next move. Maybe it could do something about that white beast that first sniffed it out… now there was a distinct possibility, one that made its own determination grow stronger.

“Nngh… it’s all right… I’m okay!” Sokka called to Korra at her concerned exclamation. Somehow… somehow he was. It hurt like the living daylights, and he knew it still would for a while… and with as much pain as he felt now, he was all the more grateful for her call. Warrior that he was though, Sokka pushed through the pain and followed up with a trio of sword swings. Only the third one hit, but his eyes widened ever so slightly when he felt it connect. This thing was some demonic ghost, but he felt that attack connect as though the Death Sword had a corporeal form.

Korra was quick to follow up on his own attacks, and by the time he had retaken his stance, he saw her swing her water whip right at their target with deadly speed. He wasn’t sure if she had made the same observation he had, that this thing did have apparent intangibility as well as a tangible form, but if he wasn’t mistaken, the satisfying snap of the first water whip had connected. The Death Sword didn’t stick around to take the other two hits though, as it quickly backed up and appeared to fade a bit more, but at the very least, it seemed they were irritating it. That was progress right there… they were definitely doing something in an otherwise impossible scenario. That meant they could win.

“Korra, did you connect there?” He knew that he could not understand the full extend of just how much a bender could feel their given element if it was not directly connected to their person, but Korra was also a master waterbender. Regardless of the sound that had echoed through the chamber, and regardless of his own observation, he wanted to make absolutely sure of something. If he could, then he might just be able to figure out how to better counter this thing.

Stepping forward and bracing himself against the pain from the previous strike, Sokka raised his sword so that it was set to block. He could only really reach this thing with his boomerang right now, but he had to make a couple more observations first, and if that meant taking a few blows for it, then it was worth it. After all, getting past this thing would get them out of this cave.

Re: A New Kind of Bending

Post by Korra on Sun Jul 31, 2016 8:02 pm

At the affirmation that Sokka was okay, Korra sent him a thumb's up. The look on her face was one of relief, before turning back to face this...thing. A platypus bear? Alright, sure. They could grapple with that and send it packing. Mazes and puzzles? Child's play thanks to Sokka's quick mind! Even that racer, as difficult as he was, could still be defeated once knocked out of his kart. But this was...beyond her! The two of them were REALLY going to have to rub together their brains and muscles to get out of this one! What else could possible be behind this thing?

She had been unable to tell whether Sokka's sword had managed to snag the spirit or not, there was simply to much movement all around for her to see. However, line of sight wasn't an issue for her when it came to her own attacks! As the tendrils of water were lengthened, seemingly stretched and then released upon it, she could feel one strike hit. The inertia of her attack sent a ripple through the water that the Avatar could easily feel in her own hands! The hiss only solidified it for her, and Korra grinned happily. Unfortunately, the next two strikes were not so lucky. Like the ice, it seemed to slice right through thin air. Just as fast, the grin dropped as she jumped back to Sokka's side. It now definitely seemed annoyed, could it actually feel pain? No attacks came for them though, and to her that meant they had an opening.

Turning to her friend, she gave him a firm nod. "Yeah! For a moment, I did!" A short-lived moment, but still! It was something. A curious thought dawned on her, and she raised her eyebrows at her friend. "Did one of your's hit it too?" Spirit or not, now they knew this thing wasn't invincible! Furrowing her brows in thought, Sokka took a defensive position. "Maybe it can only turn intangible if it concentrates? Maybe if we go at it all at once, or disorient it, we'll be able to keep hitting it!" Despite the eager tone and firm stance she was taking with this plan, Korra still made an attempt to say it at a level only Sokka could hear. Wouldn't really be a good plan if she yelled it loud enough for it to hear! "I'll cover the back, you strike the front, let's see what happens!"

Before another word could pass between the two, the tendril of water was bent to float before her own face. It sloshed, the water still whole as it waited to be used. With several quick jabs with her fingers into the water, several icicles shot out of it! Gathering it up with long, sweeping motions of her arms, Korra moved as if conducting an orchestra. Like an annoying swarm of gnats, the icicles floated through the air and around the spirit, before finally congregating around the back of the spirit. Pulling her fingertips in toward her own chest, the ice spikes launched towards the spirit, intending to impale. And even if it didn't work...it would hopefully distract the spirit enough for Sokka to leap ahead and slice it!

--At level 1, the only bending ability Korra still retains is the element of her native heritage, Water. This doesn't make her a slouch though, as she's still a very good waterbender, although her healing abilities are blocked for now. As long as she has her waterskin on her, of there is water around, she is able to waterbend. With this power, Korra can create icicles that she can send out or use as a makeshift sword to injure her opponent.

Specifics: Each attack is 2 die/1 coin, with the AP cost fluctuating based on the current level. There is a 6 die limit, so the maximum amount of attacks that can be done with this power is three.

    Level 20–39:
    2 Die / 1 Coins = 02 AP
    4 Die / 2 Coins = 04 AP
    6 Die / 3 Coins = 06 AP

The Death Sword still had some respectable stamina left, but it had already taken more hits than it would have liked. Somehow… somehow these two were striking through to its weakness, but based on when some of their attacks were flying, they still had not figured it out entirely. That alone was helpful, and it was set to capitalize on that chance as soon as it could.

Still floating back and forth, eyeing up each of its three potential targets, it noticed that whilst it had its own powerful sword at the ready, the swordsman it had been fighting had instead taken up a defensive stance. That was likely the smartest move he could have made for now, although it only delayed the inevitable. Another strike would come, and no swordplay would be a match for the sheer force behind it.

As the two flanked each other and attempted to strategize their next move, the Death Sword began to size up its own attack. The Avatar sought to send another volley of ice at it, but the blows whisked through it as though it were nothing. Not about to be phased by such an attempt and hoping to use the flow of this round to its own advantage, the Death Sword charged forward, bringing down another heavy strike right towards the swordsman.

Two had swords, but only one brought Death.

Sokka appreciated the thumb’s up, still glad to have Korra by his side no matter what they faced. The two might have come from different times, but they had still become the best of friends, and their own fighting styles had blended together to form an unstoppable duo. They were already this strong with each other, and he could hardly wait to see just what all they could achieve once Korra had regained her ability to bend each of the other elements. As he too regained his full attack power and more complex maneuvers,  he knew that they would only have even more amazing spars, and even more incredible tag-team battles.

At catching both Korra’s glance and nod, Sokka nodded back to her a bit more slowly. Good, she’d felt her attack connect… he might not have figured out just how they hit this thing yet, but he was getting close, and if it gave them even more clues, then they could be on top of it in no time. Once its weakness was exposed, they could chip away at it and show this thing that they were not about to lose to the likes of it. At Korra’s question, Sokka stated, “Yeah, it did. Only my last one, but I definitely felt it connect.” As he settled more into his defensive stance, Korra offered a possibility, and Sokka was quick to consider and analyze it. “Maybe… I think there might be more to it than that, but you might be onto something… either way, that’s a good plan. I’m sure we’ll figure it out if we give it our all!”

Between a strong volley of attacks and picking up the clues it gave them in each exchange, they would have this figured out in no time, and he was sure that would only lead to another notch in their string of victories. As Korra announced that she’d cover the back and called for Sokka to go in from the front, he couldn’t help but grin slightly. “Sounds perfect. Show this thing what happens when you mess with the Avatar!”

At that, Korra was quick to turn her own wave of water into its next form, namely a flurry of icicles that she had commanded to zoom around. Oh yeah, that was a perfect way to strike from behind, just when it was least expecting it! Sokka was still set to meet any sword attacks with a counter, and as he began to strafe forward, Korra threw everything she had into the icy spikes, sending them straight into the Death Sword! From its own position shift, a chunk of them managed to miss it, but the strong follow up hit somehow whizzed right through it! Sokka glared at seeing this, but even if his friend had not connected, he was going to take this chance that she had created for him.

Dashing forward, Sokka soon found himself face to face with another attack, one where the Death Sword slammed its own weapon down again. He attempted to dodge, but he was only able to turn it into a glancing blow instead of a full miss. Hissing as his left arm took the brunt of the hit, Sokka pushed through, turning the momentum of the attack against the demon, and following up his counter with two more quick slashes.

Sokka confirmed that he had also managed to land a hit, though only at the very end of his attack. Her brows furrowed, attempting a play by play from memory of what Sokka had done. To her eyes, it looked like the usual sort of sword fighting. Although it was obviously more complicated then that, she couldn't help but to see his attacks as several slashes of metal. What was the difference, why had their attacks connected? Could it really be dumb luck? The Avatar nodded in agreement, she was sure there was more to it then what she had guessed. Unfortunately, their little friend here wasn't exactly in a very informative mood. With no other way around, they would have to take a risk and test to see what exactly was going on! "Exactly!" She agreed, curling an arm into a triumphant fist. What was the worst that could happen?

Almost ready for her attack, Korra threw a smirk over her shoulder to her friend. "Took the words right out of my mouth!" And then Sokka could show it what happens when you mess with a Water Tribe Warrior! The ice flurried around the beast before diving down to strike it in the back...and the young woman grimaced at the sight of her icicles sliding right through the ethereal body. With a sharp SHING!, the ice pierced itself into the ground beneath the ghoulish thing. That was definitely a failure, not a single piece of ice struck it! Frowning, she took on a defensive stance as she watched for Sokka's attack.

Before her friend could properly attack, the creature met his charge sword against sword! "Sokka!" He managed to duck, barely missing it. That sword still managed to nick him, much to her displeasure. As Sokka followed up his attack with two more strikes of the sword, Korra stepped into action. Holding both arms in front of her body, she moved her forearms in a wide circle before jutting both hands high into the air. At the motion, the icicles that stabbed into the floor beneath the thing flew up as if put into reverse. They lifted up, and struck into the creature yet again and without any momentum lost. As she did this, the young woman called out. "Any luck connecting yet?!

    Ice Spear (Damage Enhancer)
