    Hunting

Post by Nym on Sat Oct 19, 2013 4:49 pm

    TIME: 2:55 PM
    DATE: October 21st, 2013

    "Be swift and quiet..."

The lush grasslands flowed as a soft and cold breeze fell over the landscape. The frost was coming in soon, and there were burrows made for the smaller animals to hide in and become ready for the winter. Still collecting some food for storage, squirrels and rabbits and birds of various sorts all scattered and hid themselves within the tall grass, being as quiet as they could and wary of predators. They had to worry about coyotes, foxes, perhaps the occasional wolf or two, hawks and other large birds of prey...

    but a blue dog?

"Don't kill unless you have to..."

Paws softly moving on the grass, trying his hardest not to move a single stone or pebble, Nym was glaring down a pheasant. It was pecking at the ground, moving slowly and uncaring of its surroundings as it tried to gobble the few bugs that emerged from its scavenging. Nym had felt sorry about the squirrel he had killed out of vengeance, and wished to not harm any other creature, but he soon realized that was a lost cause. Hunting was in his data, just like most animal-like Digimon. Nym would not harm unless he had to, to train himself, and he would also put to use the catch--food, a pelt, something so he could at least know he wasn't killing out of spite, but to learn.

Just like most predators taught their young.

Nym did not wish to tell Aya until he actually did catch something, and explained thoroughly what he wished to accomplish. He wasn't sure if this would upset her or not, but he knew as long as he wasn't doing it for 'fun', and just to 'learn', he saw no reason for her to be truly upset.

"Quietly..." his thoughts were simple as his eyes fixated on the bird, coming closer and closer...

    "RRRYAWH!"
Jumping from his spot, Nym attempted to catch the pheasant, punching it into submission and grasping it in his maw as he had read in his books and magazines how animals caught their prey.

It was unsuccessful, as he missed and scared the pheasant away before he could land a hit, and chased after it across the grasslands for a moment, but stopped mid-chase as the bird was simply much to fast, and Nym was far from agile in chase. He was not a cheetah, and his small legs, though powerful for kicking and punching, were not meant for chasing... quick getaways, maybe. Panting and sitting on a rock after that display, Nym rested before attempting to find something else to catch. He had kept himself from eating all day just so he had a reason to catch something, and the nearby stream gave him plenty of free water.

The few berries he ate weren't very good, but they were edible, and they at least gave him a bit of energy to get back into the chasing game. "This is harder than it looks..." the Digimon panted, taking off his gloves for a moment and flexing his paws. Maybe it'd be easier to catch them without those things on...

A noise far off in the distance plucked the ears up on a dozing dragon. Arrogath clenched his brow into a tight grimace and then released it in the form a long drawn out yawn. Tongue uncurling and stretching as if trying to dislodge something unsavory, and then darting back into his narrow jaws once he'd freed himself of the sensation. He pulled his head up atop a curved neck and looked off in the direction of the outburst. He was coiled atop a massive mossy boulder. His resting spot was shielded by autumnal sentinels; tall sycamores and broad leaf trees arranged to block the sun from his eyes throughout the chilly overcast afternoon. Normally he'd stand out like a bright beacon in the woods, but it was fall now, and wherever you looked the forest was cloaking itself in his colour.

Arro hopped down from his roost and prowled through the fiery leaf litter. He passed through an enveloping wall of undergrowth that plunged him in darkness, then broke out of the trees in a patch of light at the meadows threshold. In the distance he could see a small blue figure make it's way to a rock and plop down with evident exhaustion. A few meters to the dragon's left, a perturbed looking ground bird scurried away into its hole.

He watched it go with a snaggle-toothed grin and then began to wade down from the woods into the bowl of the valley.

"Hello there Nym" he called, already halfway to the Digimon's resting place. When he reached the rock he took note of the mon's de-gloved hands and the scent of berry juice in the air. He tilted his head at a considerate angle and inquired after the younger creature, "How's hunting?"

He didn't appear to be having much luck.

Nym panted and wiggled his toes, stretching a little before perking his ears up and hearing a familiar voice. Oooh, it was the dragon! "Hello, Arro!" Oh!... Ooohhh.... he probably saw that pitiful display. Head down a little, Nym fiddled with his fingers as he tried to answer the question with a little dignity, "... kind of well." He could use more practice, that was obvious, but it was embarrassing having other people watch him.

"I'm a little out of it, I keep trying to be sneaky, with and without my gloves and headband, too! But the darn birds and rabbits are too fast..." he admitted quietly, looking down a little in shame. "They turn, I try to follow, but I slip up! My feet aren't able to keep up..." A pheasant lurked nearby, causing Nym's ears to perk up, hearing the feet as it started to scratch at the ground. Trying not to get miffed about it, the Digimon looked back at Arro with a small smile and letting his tail wag a little.

"How are you doing? Did you come around here to stretch your wings?" he asked, ignoring the bird nearby and his urge to jump on it.

Arro's eyes traced the path of the foraging bird, his gaze instinctively drawn to it's movements as he spoke.

"Not this day. I spend much of my time between here and the mountains actually. I was resting in the woods atop the hill when I heard your growl", he lifted his eyes from the passing quarry, "And I'm very well, thank you."

He paused to think on Nym's troubles and the scents drifting along the field. He hadn't seen the actual attempt to grab the pheasant but he could puzzle together what had happened without needing to. He could see that he was hungry, but didn't appear to be lost. It was improbable to think his caretaker's among them wouldn't have enough food for Nym, so he must have forgone eating prior to coming out here...

"Let me help you," he suggested. "I know we planned on meeting at the Inn to train, but we're both already here."

There were some things he could tell Nym that would save the younger hunter much trouble. Arro had learned them on his own through trial and error, but if there'd been someone around to teach him it would have prevented a lot of nights with an empty stomach.

Scratching behind his head, the dog glanced up and looked at Arro wide-eyed as he offered to help him. Really? Help him? Well, it was true, as Arro just stated, they were to go and train... and this place was rather large! It was pretty nice, too. It would give them both some good exercise! Especially Nym, he was getting a little chubby thanks to the food he had access to. "If you want to, Arro! I'd really love to learn from you!" Nym said with a large smile and his tail wagging rapidly.

Standing up on the rock he perched himself on, Nym kept his headband and gloves off and stood as proudly as he could portray himself like a good little soldier of sorts. Zurg had trained him well. "Awaiting your command, sir!" he saluted, tail still wagging as he eagerly waited for some kind of instruction from the large dragon.

Post by Arro on Mon Oct 21, 2013 3:27 am

[This took longer because pb decided to eat my post when I was previewing it. Had to try and remember and retype the whole thing]

The dragon smiled at Nym's response and growled approvingly, "Alright then." He reared up, scraping the air, and nestled back on his haunches with a crunch from the frail grass. Balancing on his heels in a half turn, he then fell back on all fours.

"Let's come away from here, the birds have gotten wise to us" he beckoned, his voice lowering in decibel. He would speak thusly from here out to prevent forewarning any life nearby. His words would carry to Nym but no further. Arrogath began moving deeper into the field with slow deliberate steps.

He walked and talked, "First lesson. Never growl or roar when hunting. Until direct physical contact is made, any noise skews the hunt in the prey's favor. This is critical, and only accentuated when the quarry is small and thus has quicker reflexes. Sound serves only to give them a head start, and the idea of hunting is always to locate prey before it locates you."

They made their way down to the base of where two hills met. Their tops rose around them to form a miniature valley within the heartlands. The grass was tall and brittle, it's monotony disrupted by scattered glacial borders, patches of grevillea and emaciated shadbush. Plenty of places they could hide, but also plenty of hidden pitfalls that could create noise and alert whatever was hidden around them. The divet provided enough cover that they would not be seen by whatever was dwelling beyond.

"Hunting is subterfuge. It's not about being, swift or strong. It's about being smarter than what you're trying to kill. The outcome of a hunt is determined by everything you do before you give chase, and give yourself away."

The dragon sat in the grass and thought for a few moments. His ears flexed atop his horned head, chasing small sounds in the distance. He looked at Nym from under a sharply angled brow. "There are several beings within ten meters of us that we are downwind of" he said, the hush in which he spoke accentuating the rasp to his words. "Each of them has a specific sense it uses to identify threats. Without leaving here, I want you to focus and tell me where one of them is."

((Ack! That sucks, I'm sorry you had to deal with that! D: I hope it won't happen again!))

Biiiiiirds. Those were tricky due to their ability to fly, and it was hard for Nym to jump high enough to catch one due to his little legs. Snorting from is nose in a huff at the thought, the Digimon followed Arro, carrying his things on his back as he went on all fours to get a better feel of the ground. Watching and listening to the dragon made the dog excited, but he controlled himself and heard his words, allowing them to sink in.

Growling was bad. He knew that, but he couldn't help himself at times. His main problem was definitely being quiet. Nym nodded, "okay..." and allowed the information to wrap around his head. No noise! None. Even the sound of his paws on the ground was bad, he had to find a better way to be careful of the noises he made.

Placing the items nearby on a rock, Nym returned his focus on the landscape, sniffing the air as he tried to make himself smaller. It had a strange yet fascinating scent all around, and his nose kept wiggling to see if he could smell anything else. An ear perked up when Arro spoke.

Being smarter? Nym thought to himself. Animals were smart, weren't they? He didn't bother to ask Arro this, and let the thought escape him while the dragon's own ears started to perk at noises the Digimon had trouble hearing. Amazed by Arro's ability to determine such details regarding their prey, Nym's eyes widened and he lowered himself closer to the ground.

Nodding, the ears atop his head started to twitch as his nose wiggled, sniffing for anything other than the flora that surrounded them. Distraction of a slight breeze at the tickling of the grass made it difficult to focus, but he tried to sink into nothing. Sink and just focus... what was nearby--or specifically, where was it. Direction, where was it located...

A small dusting--he heard something move very slightly. His focus disappeared, but he heard it just a bit, enough to at least determine the direction it was coming from.

Pointing south-east with his nose like a hunting dog, Nym mumbled lowly, "something made a noise over there..." he stated with a somewhat stern voice, confident in his decision. He looked to Arro for his go ahead, or whether he failed.

His charge picked out a target, angling his nose in the direction of a small rustling in the prairie.

The dragon leveled his gaze upon the south-east hilltop. His ears twitched and nostrils flared slightly, sifting the chill air until he had located the target Nym had identified. Something small was crawling below the switchgrass.

    He nodded to Nym. "Good".

"Can you tell whether it is coming towards us or moving away? By listening to the way the grass rustles we may also be able to tell whether it is a bird, moving on two legs or a mammal moving on four."

Arro didn't necessarily expect Nym to be able to guess these things straight away. But he wanted to get the digimon thinking about sounds of movement. The more he listened and practiced the more he'd be able to discern without ever even seeing the quarry. And knowing exactly what you were about to pounce on or move towards beforehand often determines the approach.

As Nym would soon discover, there would be a lot of pre-planning before considering taking a step. Charging in and snapping at whatever moves can work on occasion, but Arro preferred planning and tactics to relying on luck. This was only the first method of stalking he would teach. There were more to come, and after that even more methods in which to actually carry out the chase.

A small wag of the tail hinted Nym was happy by this! He got it right! Though the next question made Nym wonder if he could even attempt that. Focusing was hard already, and it took him minutes to even determine there was something out there. He certainly didn't want to keep Arro waiting, but he gave it another shot, nodding before he pressed his head against the ground, ears perked up and trying to block other noises.

It was harder this time, as he thought it would be. He couldn't really focus on the animal itself, even if he had a sense of direction it was in. Brushing noises weren't helpful, and he had little to no idea what it could be. But he wanted to try! Prove he could do it.

His racing mind was unable to let him this time, though, and he looked to Arro with a slightly disappointed expression, shaking his head, "no, I can't focus on it." Maybe he was too excited... whatever the case, he looked over the grass as much as he could for a moment, sniffing the air deeply. Maybe sniffing could help--he knew the scents of the animals by now. There weren't many squirrels out and about in the fields, so that was ruled out quickly. The pheasants had a strange scent, one Nym had difficulty pin-pointing.

If it was a rabbit, he'd surely know it!

Another deep inhale and Nym went quiet, allowing the various scents to enter as he tried to pick out specific ones. "There are a lot of rabbits in this area... it could be one." Those were harder to catch than the birds! They zigged and zagged and he nearly twisted his hip and legs the wrong way a few times!

[Sorry for the wait, busy busy busy. Have a wall of text]

"Don't worry. Deciphering sound will come with practice."

The young dragon hadn't expected hearing to be Nym's lead sense. He was not a dog, he did not smell like one, but he looked and behaved much like one. So what about scent? How familiar with the children of the forest had he become?

Arro watched the digimon with patient eyes. His charge's gaze shifted over the gently rolling grass, observing, and inhaling the secrets within the air. A comfortable silence settled over the meadow as Arro watched his unlikely pupil breathe and think. The drai's thoughts drifted, he found himself noting similarities within the mon's focused stare. He had seen a similar expression within a placid pool on a different world, back when he was very young.

Nym broke the silence with an observation. He suggested the lehrall they were listening to was a rabbit. And he was right again.

"It is. You've a good nose on you."

Time to move on to stalking.

"A rabbit's sense of hearing is it's first line of defense. It's vision though far-sighted has a wide three-hundred and sixty degree range. Most prey with eyes situated on the sides of their heads share this trait. This hinders them with a slight blind spot in their central field of view. But their ears and nose compensate for this. You'll want to catch him off-guard, the grass will help conceal your approach but will also make it difficult to stay quiet."

The dragon slowly dropped into a crouched position. Squaring off his shoulders, lowering his head and keeping his hips in line with the level of his scapula.

"The crouch is to prevent your silhouette from breaking the horizon line and to present as small and unchanging of a visual indicator as possible."

In cases of approaching a target over clear and open ground this was more important. Even in plain sight, if you sit and wait you could blend into the background of the quarry's mind. Then slowly proceeding forward without alerting the target becomes possible, but only if you retain your pre-accepted shape.

He brushed a hand through the grass, "When proceeding, step with a upwards sweeping motion, letting the back of your paw sway the grass aside. It will make less noise than if you step straight down, and will clear the ground in front of you of debris."

If Nym practiced this he should become better at this than Arro. Nym had padded paws, adaptations more well suited for hunting on the ground than Arro's long raptor claws. His fur would create less noise brushing against the grass than his scaley clutching fingers.

The dragon demonstrated the stepping motion several times before firmly planting his hand in the dirt.

"Your following hind foot should always fall into the print left by your forefoot. You've already cleared the way and don't need to worry about what your hind legs are doing. Just keep your movements minimized, control the up and down of your shoulders and hips so you don't present a changing silhouette."

He took a couple precise steps forward, lifting and placing feet and hands in tightly regulated form. He suppressed any up and down movements incurred by the cycle to force an almost mechanical motion into his limbs.

"If you can get close without making any noise, the grass will disguise any errors in your stalking pose, and it should be easy enough to pounce. When you do it, come from above so as to close the distance soundlessly. As I said before, we are downwind so smell should not be a problem unless the air shifts. Then, once you have him, snap the neck to sever the spinal chord. This disconnects the brain, effectively shutting the body down. He will die quickly and painlessly."

The dragon settled into his crouch, narrowing his eyes as he stared through the grass ahead. He listened to tiny sounds; passing insects, kisses of wind and the omnipresent dull rushing of the atmosphere that was always within his ears. Beneath it all were the humble sounds of small lifeforms fulfilling the purposes they were born for.

"Go. Talking will only get you so far, it's time for practice."

He would wait here and watch.

    Re: Hunting

Post by Nym on Thu Oct 24, 2013 5:09 pm

((It's okay! Sorry if I seem impatient!))

More pride poured over him with the knowledge that he was correct, but not enough to make his head swell. He was far from the best, and he knew this, but the idea that he got the chance to know and understand what it was in front of him was always a plus. But a rabbit... those were tricky! Nym paid close attention as Arro spoke in detail of the creature, almost like a talking book. His knowledge was astounding to Nym, and he looked upon the dragon with wide-eyes and an expression of awe and curiosity. Would he become that smart if he kept this up?

As Arro crouched, Nym tried his best to copy the position. The motion of the paw--he tested that too, making sure he was getting it right. He felt almost like a real predator at that moment! But that had to be let go--he couldn't be excited, no matter how much he really was. Any chance of breaking this movement and state of mind would cost him the prey!

Feet in the same spot... and pouncing. Nym nodded his head--until the mentioning of snapping the creatures neck came into play. A small feeling of horror overwhelmed him as he tried to imagine himself doing that. He had only been successful once, and that was with a squirrel, but he didn't kill it that way. Hearing it would be quick and painless, he felt a twinge of guilt over how he proceeded to kill the squirrel. It was cruel and took quite some time!

    Now he felt terrible...
He didn't want to disappoint Arro, and he had at least gave it a proper burial. And besides, he wasn't out here killing for the fun of it--he was doing it for actual reasons, such as to eat and gain strength, speed and endurance. Letting the guilt and darker thoughts leave, Nym nodded firmly as he began his first real hunt, his mind trying to focus on his prey.

Brush the grass away... stay crouched... he thought as he started to perform the actions the dragon had just taught him. Letting himself get used to it was a little difficult--he needed to also stay on top of the rabbit, making sure to listen and smell it as often as he could without making noise. This was much more difficult than he thought and anticipated for.

S... Snap the neck... the thought made his lip curl, showing off his teeth. He couldn't let emotions get him right now... he had to get the prey. Firmly and quickly...

There it was--a grey rabbit. He could see it just a few feet in front of him. Its back was turned, it was grooming itself it looked like, and Nym had the upper hand. Quick and... painless... teeth barred and ready to strike, the mon got closer just a bit more...

    ... and POUNCED!

    _______
    AFTER THE COIN:

The chase was quick, over within the blink of an eye, and Nym was without his prey. The rabbit had fled faster than he could keep up, and the Digimon snapped at the heels, letting it get away and into the den where it lived. Wanting to chase it inside the hole, Nym dove right in, but hurt his head, digging a bit and giving up after he realized he could not get inside. Well, the prey got away and the dog felt depressed for the loss. Standing up and looking at Arro, he shook his head, "couldn't get him fast enough... did I do something wrong?" he asked as he fell on all fours, walking towards Arro...

More so hopping, as the grass was thick, and he didn't know where his path had gone.

[Oh no, you don't seem impatient. I just feel bad because I keep taking so long. Very very busy, my apologies]

Nym waded through the grass as instructed. He did everything right. Thought was visible in his youthful features as he placed forepaw after forepaw before him. But the rabbit was better. It's small head popped into the air at the most unfortunate moment, suspicious of a shadow, Nym's shadow. It turned tail and fled. Flashing it's white flag and spooking several other nearby creatures into their holes. The rabbit followed their example and disappeared into a tunnel below the weeds.

Arro sniffed the air and crackled gently from within his chest.

"Good" he affirmed. Seemingly genuinely proud.

He turned and started walking, flicking his tail in a gesture for Nym to follow.

"Don't take that hard. You've just learned the techniques, while that rabbit has had years of practice to surpass them."

They mounted another hill. The valley stooped and rose abruptly beyond them in waves of earth and grass. Several great oaks stood in lone copses, offering shelter to passerine birds and small creatures within their roots. The sunlight twinkled through the branches, patterning the fields with splotches of cool light. Sounds of life carried past them in the wind.

"But you've more time than he to practice and become even better... Now, locate another target, and try again."

(It's totally fine! At least you get the time to reply! :3)

Arro didn't seem upset by Nym's inability to catch the rabbit. He felt a little better knowing it was alright, and the two were ready to head out a little more elsewhere to find more prey to practice. As Nym's paws touched the ground, he put pressure into the dirt to feel it between his toes. It felt nice, but cold, and he followed the drai's advice from earlier to follow his back paws into the footsteps he took ahead of them. He wasn't hunting, but he wanted to continue practicing this feature so he wouldn't forget.

The other hill had a beautiful view, and Nym inhaled the air deeply and kept it held inside his lungs for a few seconds before releasing it, sighing a little. It felt so much nicer out here, the air was so much cleaner... the city was noisy and dirty, but out here, he could breathe and smell nature's purity. He valued this moment, allowing himself to get lost within it, but Arro spoke, breaking him from his thoughts.

Ears alert, he turned to Arro and listened to his words. "I will do my best!" he assured before going ahead of him just a few feet, lowering himself within the grass. Time to focus again; nose sticking out from the thick grass and inhaling all the scents around him, he couldn't smell anything too particular. Perhaps a pheasant, though? He heard scratching at the ground, and it wasn't a rabbit. It had to be a bird of some kind, but what kind, he had no idea. A crow? A pheasant? Some other game bird?

Nym's fur arose upon his shoulders as his ears went back, taking his first steps closer to the bird. Brushing the grass from his line of sight, his nose kept him on the trail...

He saw something moving ahead, it was a large bird--a crow--picking at the ground where a dead mouse was. Normally that would disgust Nym, but he was far too focused on his prey...

    A few more steps...
    And he struck!

    ---
    After the coin:

It all happened so fast--his jaw wrangled itself around the neck of the crow, crunching down as hard as he could until he heard a cracking noise, indicating the bird had been killed. The dog had an urge to shake it around in his mouth, but he knew it would just break into pieces, and that wouldn't be very good, would it?

A somewhat proud trot back to Arro as he dropped the dead crow at his feet, looking up with blood on his fangs and around his maw, a glint in his eye as if wanting something more. "Is this a good catch, Arro? Are crows a worthy hunt?" Nym asked, wondering deep in his mind how he would eat it...
