    Devil's Breath

Post by Prixlezub on Sat Oct 05, 2013 1:53 pm

    Time: 8:00 PM
    Date: September 6th, 0004

A light breeze traveled through the fading light of the summer evening, whispers traveling through sparse evergreens and pine trees. Few birds fluttered amid the lazy draft, eager to return to their homes of woven twigs and long grasses. Below the branches of the trees more nocturnal denizens of the alpine woods started to emerge; possums, small feral cats, wolves and foxes alike. All came out to enjoy the mild evening and feed.

Something prowled among the native denizens, nimbly soaring through the trees on powerful wings. Dark feathers covered his body, reflecting a shimmering shade of dark blue as it passed trough the fading light that managed to keep from getting blotted out by the branches overhead. Every now and again the creature would stop and perch on a branch, his figure, feathered and large beaked silhouetted against the trees.

"Rouk... Rouk... Rouk..." He gently sang, the bird's hoarse call revealing his identity. A raven. Satisfied with his view in the canopy of the conifers, the large bird took a few moments to oversee those that passed by beneath him. Some deer cautiously stepped under the tree, their heads erect and vigilant. but how strange when they suddenly turned and fled just as quickly as they came, at least until the raven gained a whiff of it himself.

Death, rotting flesh... A warning to many beasts, but to the bird was a rather sweet perfume. From the scent, it seemed like a great number had been long since slaughtered and rotting, a fishy undertone carried with it... A slaughter that had been nearby. Taking wing, the black bird took no hesitation in seeking out the source of such a heavenly aroma, following it to the edge of the woods before coming to a stop in the branches of a tree. He dared not venture further, instead tilting his head quizzically at the scene before him.

No field of battle lay stretched out, the ground lacking a familiar stain of crimson and scent of bloodied iron. No piles of bodies lay stacked, left to decay in the sun and become a feast for the flies. What stood before the bird was nothing more than a small town, streets empty to the point of questioning whether any residents still resided. The bird detected none, not even a sign of struggle. Look there, the windows were still intact on the buildings, and the carts in the streets showed no signs of upturning. The raven nearly suspected this place to simply have been abandoned, if it not were for that suspicious scent...

Spreading his great wings, the raven glided down to a rooftop, tail feathers fanning out as he landed. Tilting his beaked head, the bird looked down at the empty streets, covered in stone.

    "Rouk Rouk Rouk..."

    Oh look, company...

The raven will find himself not alone, for soon a second raven appeared. It flew down toward the first's building and landed several meters away, hopping as it did so. "Rouk... Rouk... Rouk..." it returned, golden eyes inquisitive. As faithful to all bird-like fashion, the second raven proceeded to pick at its wing in an effort to remain clean. Unlike the first, however, it did not carry a dark blue sheen when beneath shadow or darkness. Once finished, it shook its feathery head and allowed its plumage to ruffle. What a content and energetic little raven, it was!

    "Rouk Rouk Rouk..."
And what better to quote a raven than, well, another raven?

A distant call that mirrored his own brought the bird's gaze away from the village, looking up to see the arrival of another winged creature. None other than a second raven came to join him, its raspy call carrying upon the still air. It ruffled its feathers and shook its head, gaze still upon the first more blueish bird. Perhaps a curious resident of the woods, coerced to the roof top out of curiosity. Or maybe it fully believed that the bird it decided to land next to truly was one of its kin.

Either way, the bird was paid little mind, and he took wing once more to leave his doppleganger. The scent of decay still lingered in the bird's nostrils despite the fact there was next to no corpses laying about in the streets. A tilt of his feathery wing and he banked around a building, quickly soaring through alleyways and ducking about storefronts. Little remained that would even hint at the previous existence of a populace. The stores had been cleaned out of their electronics, curiously. Lines where dust was not as thick on the shelves hinting at their disappearance. The rest however... It seemed they were not as much importance.

The raven fluttered and perched upon the handle of a cart, taking a short moment to idly preen his feathers before looking at the rest of the lakeside village. What had happened here that made this place so empty and sickly scented? His beak tilted towards the cart as he noticed it seemed to smell especially of the dead, hopping off the handle and landing within it's carved holding area.

"Rouk rrouk!" The raven happily rasped, rolling over on the wood like it was taking a dust bath. A few moments of rolling around in the cart, and the bird returned to his feet, already hopping up to the edges, his plumage puffed up around him. However, it was hardly an expression of mirth.

The cart smelled so heavily of the dead, and yet there was nothing to suggest there had been a mass slaughter of any kind! The inhabitants could not have been dumped in the lake, the bird would have surely noticed a great stink rising from its depths... His feather's flattened, tiny talons jumping off the side of the cart to land on the paved streets.

Perhaps there was a trail that could be followed.

Little of mind, little of mind... What did you see, Little Mind?

You smelled death, didn't you? Yes, yes; it was rather thick here, wasn't it? The second raven took flight soon after the first, landing meters away on a tattered scarecrow. A sickly effigy, don't you think? The pumpkin serving as its head had long since rotted, leaving nothing but gooey entrails cascading down sullied overalls. Its stench was simply unbearable, but here the second raven perched. Curious now, it quirked that feathery head to the side and kept a beady eye on its inquisitive neighbor. Trying to find a path, hmm? It surely wasn't that way, Little Mind. No, no, no... Again, the second raven flew off for a quick burst and settled down with talons outstretched onto a cobblestone road.

From there it rustled its feathers once more, appearing fluffier than usual. It then proceeded to hop around the first raven in a playful display.

    "Rouk rrouk!"
    Little Mind, Little Mind~!

The scents here were all equally strong, not a single one overpowering the other to the point of being traceable. A curved beak tilted towards the ground, idly tapping the stone as the bird pondered where the village's inhabitants had gone. Obviously they had been killed by the stench, but where were they being stored? A familiar flutter of wings made the raven's head snap in the direction of the duller colored bird. Apparently it had decided to tag along with Lochlann's newest visitor.

It landed on the cobblestone road, fluffing up its plumage before hopping around him. In the fading light his azure sheen was barely visible, head tilting as he looked at the other bird's playful behavior. Again it mimicked his calls, though the visitor of the two stood silently, feathers smooth and flat against his body. Though the more serious raven could not help but wonder... Was this bird a native to this village, perhaps knowledgeable of its goings on? Such members of this avian family did tend towards the more intelligent end of the spectrum.

Another tilt of his head and the raven's feather's ruffled again. Instead of taking wing, the dark bird mimicked the actions of the other, hopping about on the cobblestone. "Rouk rrouk!" He echoed.

It was high time to play a game.

A game, a game! You wish to play a game, Little Mind!

Always one for a tease, the second raven flared out its wings and resumed its strange, energetic dance. If someone were to chance upon these two and somehow not manage to alert them, the onlooker would have had great difficulty separating one from two. But watch on, watch on! The first was in for a royal treat as the second was seemingly without fatigue. It hopped and it danced; it cawed and it cried; there was truly no end to this raven's jubilation. There was... one minor detail, however. The more it performed, the more it glowed. Yes, glowed! With every hop and skip it took, the raven's dance became more furious than the last. It was as if it were in a trance - a maddening frenzy of ebony feathers and elated song. There was a faint trace of smoke, at first... And then it grew, and it grew, and it grew until...

    Poof!
And it grew until fire consumed the raven whole! Gone were its elegant feathers, traded for skeletal wings. Gone were its golden eyes, traded for emptying sockets as the ocular fluids trailed down its skull and bones. Gone, gone, gone! Yet still it danced... still it sang. The second raven acted as if it knew not what was happening, and when it reached its performance's climax...

    "Rouk rrouk!" It laughed.

There was a shattering burst of flame and bone, the second raven disintegrating before its kin's eyes. The debris clattered noisily upon the cobblestone as if they were dancing still, their haunting sounds intensified by the silence all around. But soon they grew lifeless and, as with all things, danced no more. A chilling wind swept through the area and turned the brittle remains into ash; the second raven had danced its last. Back was that sickly smell from before, but this time a new scent was carried upon it...

Along with the second raven, the first hopped and sang. Each movement kept in time until the tiny bird started to move quicker than the bird's own feet could even suggest in swiftness. His opened wings flapped backwards, sending the more stoic of the two a small distance away from the other raven as it continued to dance furiously, maddened as if under a spell. The raven tilted his head, keeping his distance away from the bird as it continued with its passionate display. Even more so due to the strange flickering of light that emanated beneath the raven's plumage.

Brighter and brighter it glowed, until it began to smoke and inevitably combust. feathers were traded for bones, and eyes were traded for wet sockets. The bird tilted his head at the corpse as it continued to dance. Bewitched, warned a voice in the back of his mind. Not everything here was as it seemed, and as soon as the bird burned away into a skeletal husk it laughed. A raven's laugh, mocking and rasping despite a complete lack of throat. The sound of bones clattering to the ground soon followed after, its final cackle carried on a biting wind.

    Along with something else.

The bird clearly heard the voice in the back of his mind, whispering quietly, calmly. His name, his full name. Who here would know of such details, kept privy under lock and key of the prince's adamant fangs? None who had traveled here from the other worlds would know of his name. It could only mean... No, it could not be. Another?

Feathered wings remained folded upon the raven's back. Dare he continue? To reveal his true form when the lines of friend and foe were blurred would be disastrous. Even disguised he could easily be read by the one who had addressed him... Who could be so adept?

Turning towards the wind, the raven ruffled his feathers and took wing. Hesitation flashed across his mind, warning of folly in his search, but curiosity was far louder.

Do you still wish to play, Little Mind?

Disguises will not help you... It was already too late. There was a powerful tremble that shook the earth, followed by the smell of rich smoke. PSH! A mighty jet of it billowed from deep beneath the ground, like a manhole suddenly shot out due to pressure. PSH! PSH! And again and again! Trails of black smoke were following after the raven, the air becoming thick and heavy with ash. Soon the raven was completely encircled, where nothing more than an impenetrable black wall prevented all exit. It was becoming hot - much too hot. Through the haze and unnatural fog came a voice, deep and penetrating, and chuckling rolled like thunder. "Come, Prixlezub taa Cr'err Grengrr... Is that what remains of your etiquette? Surely you don't think that a mediocre ruse will fool me..."

That is when a claw, thick and powerful, cut through the smoky wall and knocked the raven down. THUD! More laughter, more roiling smoke. "But, then again, your pride may think me the fool as spoiled princes are wont to do..."

Something massive moved behind the suffocating veil, the sound of metal scraping against stone...

No sooner had the raven taken flight, a sickening crack shattered the silence. Vainly the raven tried to keep his hold on his aerial superiority, weaving between clouds of thick smoke as they erupted beneath him in ashen geysers. Carved stone shattered, bits of rubble flying up to pepper his feathered wings. All the while the raven furiously flapped to try and stay ahead of the blasts. Behavior hinted the prince towards the painfully obvious. Who else to burrow beneath the ground other than a locomotogephor? To make a lair here was only natural, the mountain in the distance provided the perfect home, overlooking the village and the lake. Effortless means of food and cooling.

Now if only the demon could figure out who had made their home. Blainstrrghtokk had long since been slain, his body incinerated along with he Lair of Dark fire. Who else could have made it through the portals-?

Him wrote: "Come, Prixlezub taa Cr'err Grengrr... Is that what remains of your etiquette? Surely you don't think that a mediocre ruse will fool me..."
The very rumble of the demons' voice alone was enough to stop the bird mid flight. Eyes wide in horrific surprise, the raven hardly was aware of the massive claw that aimed to swat him out of the sky like a gnat. His world spun, a cloud of black feathers erupting from the impact point and trailing down with him. In his free fall, dark plumage melted into smoke, curling away in a cloud far bigger than the tiny creature's body entailed. From shadow erupted flames and crimson, the demon prince's powerful body twisting out of his headlong dive to land feet first on the ground.

The impact alone was enough to silence the roar of thunder, stone crumbling and exploding upwards from under his massive girth in a shower of dust and pebbles. Penetrating the dark clouds were six burning eyes, glaring upwards at the serpentine being hidden in the murk.

"Electriligos," He snarled, embers curling from his grill. "Whatever vengeful business you have with me, I will give no humor. The war ended with our arrival here, to continue such battles on a plane that hosts no victory is folly, merely an endless cycle of death and rebirth!" The prince thundered over the scrapping of metal upon stone. Gnashing teeth and deep rumbles permeated the air, Prixlezub's native tongue echoing against the massive locomotogephor's hide like the roar of an avalanche. "Leave me in peace, Shadow Keeper. One of great age and wisdom as yourself should surely see such meaningless toil in retaining past vendettas."

Behind him the demon's great blade swayed side to side, wary and awaiting of what may leap from the smoke.

    Little Mind wrote:"Electriligos."
A great shadow split the suffocating fog as a massive head peered through the abyss, fangs glistening in the ill shroud. "Ah ha ha ha..." Smoke billowed forth from that foul maw in dense folds with every syllable spoken, thick lips curling upwards. Soon Prixlezub's glaring orange flame was drowned out by darkness... "The one and the same," rumbled the great Electriligos, his grim smile belying contempt. True to his nature, the Shadow Keeper's features could hardly be distinguished from the smoldering curtain; this had been intentional. There was no telling just how many coils and limbs the lumbering gargantuan had and even if Prixlezub could, the smoke would prevent the prince from accurately predicting just when another mighty claw would emerge to humble the demon. Electriligos reveled in this fact, his grin becoming all the more pronounced.

"Wars are not merely contained upon planes of existence," the locomotogephor calmly opposed. "Indeed, the fact that we continue to exist here is ample reason enough to snuff out your niggling flame once and for all..." Another series of reverberating chuckles, malice hardly concealed. His great head disappearing into the murk, Electriligos' disembodied voice continued to emanate from seemingly all directions. "If you are still not swayed by my great age and wisdom, then let me put my words to practice. The moment you came to this fledgling world, what did you immediately seek to accomplish?" The answer was woefully simple - simple enough for a prince to solve, in fact. Suddenly the locomotogephor thrust his head forward, fumes once more crashing down upon Prixlezub in blackened waves. "You did as what comes first to your nature: domination. And when that did not succeed as it once had on the Plane of Mechanical Hellfire?" What the conniving Electriligos stated next should come as no surprise, given his ill repute. "You retreated back to a base of operations, licking your wounds. HAH! The fabled prince destined to rule as a king but doomed to live as a fool... You squandered opportunities as you squandered your so-called wife. Because of your endless incompetence and thirst for meaningless wars upon these lesser creatures, you brought ruin to the one known as Iblis. Yes, I know her name well... The stones whisper to me as stars guide a world-weary traveler."

The more Prixlezub drank of this nauseating smoke, the more his mind began to tangle in Electriligos' web. "And if you were not so keen on rekindling old vendettas, then what business had you disturbing Blainstrrghtokk? It would seem, yearling, that you are painfully oblivious to the guaranteed demise of those around you due to your insufferable hubris and need to prove yourself. When will you ever learn that a king need not wage wars of both blood and ego?"

What say the pupil to the master?

More laughter rumbled all around the prince, though his gaze stayed forward. The smoke that surrounded them both was thick, but the other demon's life energy stood out from it all like the rays of a relentless sun. However, even with the prince's request, the smoke would not lift and the locomotogephor's coils still writhed around him like an agitated serpent. A secondary path seen all too often taken by those of Electriligos' kin, though to think that the demon would swiftly wish retribution like those of lesser age would be folly. Like the massive teacher knew the prince, he also knew the other quite well.

Electriligos exchanged his malicious amusement for conversation, a pointed argument quickly formed in calm speech. Wars indeed were not only contained to single planes of existence, but what point was there in a war when those you killed only returned a few weeks later? Prixlezub shook his horned head, fiery smoke pluming from his maw. "My initial actions here mean nothing, they were the mannerisms of foolish arrogance. This I am well aware. Though to think me to be destroyed so easily through death alone proves your ignorance to the ways of this land. To die only means to be imprisoned for a short time before being granted life once more, even if you kill me, I will return." He countered evenly. Though it seemed the locomotogephor wished to pry at his past as well.

Prixlezub paid much of the other demon's words little mind, to attack his past meant little to him in the scale of things. That is, until he heard his previous mentor mention her. He knew her as Iblis, but her true name stood alongside it without needing mention. "You hold no right to speak of her name with such belittling intent." He growled, flames licking the corners of his maw. Of the locomotogephor's continued speech, the prince cared for none of it. He already stoked the demon's flames well enough, within the prince's mind he would find nothing but an inferno.

    "ENOUGH!"

The prince's booming voice was loud enough to make the debris around the both of them shake, smoke shuddering and wavering with the sheer force of Prixlezub's protest. "Your wretched tongue has overstayed both my patience and my mercy!"

Within the demon's maw a fiery glow made itself present, waves of heat shimmering along his snarling lips. Prixlezub heard enough of the locomotogephor's contempt, and it was time he burned. A torrent of fire erupted from the prince's open maw, blindingly white and intense enough in heat to turn the shattered road a boiling orange and make the surrounding air simmer.

"HAH!" Electriligos only spewed more smoke, the great stack upon his head churning and churning. "You think death the ultimate teacher of this world?" the locomotogephor boldly jeered. "Killing you shall yield nothing as you are, in turn, nothing! You are without army, without command! You are truly devoid of PURPOSE!" Flames licked Electriligos' great hide, but Prixlezub's futile efforts served only to prove for apt entertainment. "You wish to dictate fire as you would one's vassal? When will you learn, Prince, that your flame consumes more than just your enemies? Anger only leads to mislead atrophy!" It did not appear that Prixlezub's attack had proved successful. Rather, the locomotogephor simply chuckled at the lesser demon's attempt at wielding authority and thought the display pathetic. "As if I need to beseech you for the right of speech," he spoke bitterly, mammoth jaws snapping.

And that is when Electriligos disappeared... His great head pulling back into smoke and seemingly no more.
For a moment there was silence, a calm falling over the sleepy town of Lochlann...

    ...chugga, chugga, chugga, chugga!

Do you hear it, Prixlezub? Do you hear the cry of sins past? Hark, look up! See as his monstrous shadow descends upon your unwilling soul! It was then that the Shadow Keeper descended from the heavens, his vast maw outstretched wide. From a terrible height his body fell, Electriligos' serpentine form training behind. You could not escape no matter how hard you tried, the locomotogephor's unyielding jaws snapping you between with a force capable of crushing buildings. The earth heaved, the earth cracked - down you plummeted beneath the soil, down you were pushed toward Hell.

All throughout the nightmarish descent Electriligos' laughter shook the very stones. He carried your unwilling body past the asphalt, past the gravel; past any artificially-made layer the lesser creatures had sought to shape upon this world. Soon you brought to a layer of pure earth, where the locomotogephor plateaued his steep plunge. There was no light to see, there was no air to breathe... There was only darkness - darkness and Electriligos' endless cackling, as stone was loudly split upon hide.

"Welcome to the domain of mineral and rock! The domain that needs not a king!" his powerful voice continued to resonate. Tighter did his jaws become, Prixlezub fixed between two mighty points. "You can no sooner shape this realm any sooner than you can tame this unruly world! You, the supposed king of the Plane of Mechanical Hellfire, a useless puppet in the grand scheme of things! Even with the blessed ring sealing your impudence, you are nothing more than a mimicry of your true potential - a sham!" Steadily the locomotogephor's many limbs propelled himself forward in this harsh world, the earth his to command - his to wield as any blacksmith their hammer. Foolish prince!" he hissed, burrowing even faster, his many coils twisting and writhing. "You and your titles are meaningless here, in a world where your previous accomplishments carry little. You will never become the king you are destined to be, nor will the blessed seal be broken by one so arrogant! Your sins are great! Your sins are many! Is is your fault that she perished beneath your claws! It is your fault that you shall never achieve solace! You are the source of your own MISERY!"

Feel your body break upon the earth and know damnation!

The demon's hide hardly charred under his breath, the torrent of white acting as painful as a candle's licking flame. Prixlezub's answer to such a conundrum was not so far away, as Electriligos was equally an elder as the prince. What came from the locomotogephor's maw however was equally stifling and heated, an accusation both ridiculous and yet... So very true. However, the prince's snarling maw hissed with acid of its own. "If am nothing without my legions, where does that leave you? What are you without pawns to move about the land? You are just as purposeless as I, Electriligos. Perhaps even moreso in your belief that dragging me into misery will satisfy you."

Smoke curled from Prixlezub's maw as the larger demon continued to antagonize. He dared to decide that it was his place to speak of the demoness? Arrogance to the Shadow Keeper as well, if he so chose to judge the demon prince! Just as quickly he had spoken, the massive creature had retreated into the shadows, his form writhing behind a veil of smoke. All too quickly he lunged forth, maw agape and diving down on the demon prince with a horrifying roar. There was no time to evade, his blade while strong was too weak to fend off a beast of such size.

With a deafening rumble of the ground beneath them giving way, Prixlezub was forced beneath the earth. His limbs were pinned against massive teeth, stone and soil rolling past his face in an unforgiving torrent. Within moments they arrived at a layer of solid rock, Electriligos' body never ceasing his pace as it too was forced aside. Above the sharp cracking and rumble of rock crushing beneath such force, the demon was forced to give audience to more of the locomotogephor's ceaseless malice.

Long ago the demon's wind had been torn from his lungs, left with the impact point of the Shadow Keeper's fanged maw. The flames within his chest burned hotter with every word, but there was not enough air to free them... Prixlezub hissed as a rock bashed over his horns, resonating within his skull. Titles indeed meant nothing here, the demon realized that soon enough. What point was a crown when everyone was a prisoner in this universe? However, was the demon a puppet, when he had evaded the unbiased breath of the Tenth tier? The planes had been his to travel, forever free of anticipated uncertainty. Their people, their worlds were his to visit, to either befriend or conquer. What did the Shadow Keeper know of potential?

As for her, for Layla... The prince knew quite well the truth to Electriligos' words. He had damned her to death, he had made her feel for a creature that in truth was not worth her affections. The demon could not deny this, and yet he managed to utter into the relentless churning of stone. "...Yours are just as great."

The Shadow Keeper's own sins were no secret, the demon had heard of the locomotogephor's acidic words regarding his own kin and their allies. How he despised the pompous attitude of the locomotogephor, the cowardice of the Aeronemnon. It would only make sense that in time he would lash against them with shadowed claws. While a sinner the prince may have been, he had never been accused of being a traitor.

But was the locomotogephor truly without purpose? Amidst the shattering of rock and twisting of spine, Electriligos merely laughed. "I need not legions to do my bidding, nor pawns to carry out my meticulous plans," he calmly rebuked. "Here is a world that I may do as I wish. A world not bound to the Plane of Mechanical Hellfire's laws of creation! My purpose eludes your base reasoning, Prince. To exist is to defy, and that is fulfilling enough." There were no foolish wars to recreate, no worthless vendettas to uphold; there was only survival - necessity! Again, the locomotogephor could only hiss as he burrowed deeper through the earth. "What is sin to a creature born of it?" he asked, a riddle presented. "You presume I feel anything for the acts I have committed - for the lives I have sundered. Am I not, after all, a child of stolen promise? To pass judgment upon me is to look into thyself and know hypocrisy!" With a mighty shove upward, Electriligos propelled his great body through layers of stone and terra firma at frightening speeds. His teeth gnashed, plumes of smoke billowing from atop his head, as the locomotogephor rose higher and higher toward the surface.

    KRA-KOOOOOOM!
Fill your lungs with air, Prixlezub - crisp, rejuvenating life. Feel the bitter embrace of cold grace your eternally-heated hide, your vision blinded by fields of white - snow. Electriligos tore himself out from the earth's coffin, his claws gripping upon the side of a nearby mountain. Now atop his worldly throne with coils folding inward unto themselves, the terrible locomotogephor effortlessly tossed Prixlezub aside onto a sister peak and loudly snapped his monstrous jaws. "To the ends of this world do I take thee," he rumbled, smoke blotting out an already weak sun. How far had Electriligos traveled...?

His immeasurable tail snaked itself around the arctic precipice, Electriligos staring downward upon the insignificant Prince with an air of superiority. "This is where you truly belong," said he. "Out here, in the lifeless wastes that beget only oblivion. Earlier you had assumed, and poorly so, that I seek pleasure from the misery I create for you." The demon loudly laughed, fangs snapping. "When will you learn, Prince, that the only progenitor of your own agony stems from within?"

And thus did the mighty locomotogephor extend one cruel claw, Electriligos' length easily spanning across the twin peaks. It was but a mere tap - the slightest prick - and Prixlezub's chest became consumed with a torment like no other. His blood boiled, his thoughts lay disorientated and maddened; the locomotogephor's curse ran deep. "There are no legions..." As Electriligos spoke, his form began to waver. Blackened wisps of smoke rose from his features, the locomotogephor steadily losing substance. "There are no wars..." he continued. Fading, fading, fading... "And there are no devils. There is only you, Prince, and the shadows that haunt your very immortal soul. My sins are your own and I exist only... in memory." His sentence concluded, Electriligos silently lifted his great head to the endless sky and became no more... His body fell to the wind, like smoke upon a light breeze, and the locomotogephor vanished in his entirety. Gone was he, leaving the Prixlezub to his own, self-defeating devices upon the lonely mountaintop.

Only the shrill polar wind kept him company, as the encroaching shadows all around seemed to draw near; the light playing tricks on the mind...
