    Respite [!]

Post by Universal NPC on Thu Aug 22, 2013 10:50 pm

    Time: Precipice of Twilight
    Date: August 2nd, 0004

    Spoiler:

It was a long and tiring journey, but you made it. No one died on the way through the swamps and you were all eager to leave that muggy, suffocating place behind. Dingy atmosphere was exchanged for the open sky, the sun's dwindling rays teasing before descending for the night. It was quiet here, unlike the constant noise of the murk. The only sound was the soothing ebb and flow of the tide. You had little to fear; the ocean was still and the land around you remained undisturbed. Driftwood and discarded seashells dotted the warm sand - perhaps you could make use of the former?

It was a relief to finally leave the swamp and get out into fresh aitr that smelled of salt to Vincent's enhanced senses.  The gunner had trailed at the back of the group all the way through the swamp.  Taking rear guard without really asking or saying he was.  Nothing had happened and they were safely out of danger for the time being.  Vincent didn't bother to ask what needed to be done, he had done plenty of camping with the members of Avalanche, so he just went to work gathering firewood.  Once he was satisfied there was enough for the night he set up the wood properly and make sure no one was to close, especialy Bun-Bun and Miss Valentine. He knelt and began scraping two of the metal talons together, creating sparks each time, finally a spark caught and he carefully worked on it until a decent fire was burning.  He stood.

    *Whosh! Crackle*

"There should be enough wood to last thoughout the night if required."  Turning, the gunslinger walked about ten feet from the fire and sat with one leg stretched out flat the other bent at the knee with his gauntleted arm resting on it.  He took his canteen out from under the cloak and took a drink.  Of course he had brought fresh water and travel rations too, only a rookie would not. Putting the canteen away, he sat still, gazing out over the water.  He was still within voice range and sight of the group if he was needed, but for now he could relax and enjoy the soothing sounds of the waves.

Aya had not many any reason to speak though an odd relief that no one was keen on questioning her being the first one to take the head of the deceased sea-witch. It didn't bother her to carry the head but she found herself much more contented when the swamp began to lessen and the smell of brine intensified. With the sun going down it was best to stop and the sandy coast proved to be a perfect place at least for now. While Vincent begun to collect driftwood for a fire, she had no need for the warmth of the fire or much inclination to sit around it. She came closer to the draw of lapping, gurgling waves before dropping upon her bottom in the sand. The head was placed down next to her facing down into the grains of the beach.

"It might not be wise to keep a fire going all night, it might attract something." But mortal or living beings found comfort in fire, it would be a shame to rob them of that after a wearing fight they had endured. "If you want it, then feel free to sleep. I can watch indefinitely, I do not sleep and my sight is better suited beneath the moon." The draculina didn't turn to look back, she simply sat looking out over the ocean and wondered what else the dark blue waters were hiding beneath them. More snakes? Death? The Lord of who lays upon lies? She didn't know anymore, it wasn't all that simple when riddles were thrown in.

The decision had been made to leave where they had been. After all, it seemed to be popular snake people territory. Plus, as Guin had said, the giant eye might have been an attempt to alert the others of their attacks, particularly if they could see through the eye. If they had, they would have seen the numerous dead bodies and the people attacking.

Following the Leopard Warrior, they moved out of the swamp and towards the coast, Ariana keeping her distance from the others as she did. It felt liberating to have shifted in front of people for once, and to fight alongside them. Even more that people didn't seem to think differently of her. Of course, with the hectic battle, they might not have noticed. Still, she preferred to keep distance on the off chance that someone may try to talk to her about what she was and why she had been secretive about what she was.

As they made their camp on the coastline, Ariana set down her backpack and grabbed a sandwich from her bag, nibbling on it hungrily. Vincent left to make wood and Ariana considered hunting for something for everyone to eat. However, after the fight they had, she was unsure if she had the strength to go out hunting. Particularly if there were more snake people in the swamps. After Vincent made the fire, Aya offered to keep watch. She didn't need sleep, as a vampire. Ariana grabbed her sleeping bag out and stretched it along the sand, kicking her boots and socks off before climbing inside of her bag. She was tuckered out. "Thank you, Miss Valentine. Good night, everyone." Without another word, she curled up in her bag and fell asleep.

Farther from the shore, sheltered from the gusts brought on by the chilled waves was where the finch decided to stay for the night. The gentle sounds of the coming tide were quite calming to the small creature as it fluffed its feathers to rest, having hopped into the security of a hollow in the massive tree's trunk. However, while others were settling to sleep for the night, the bird did not seem to rest its eyes despite its active flight patterns. No, instead they stayed open, looking around the area for anything that may intrude.

While the gentle breeze and hushed lapping of water may be quite soothing, it did not always indicate calm.

The finch twittered and fluffed its feathers once more, keeping to the hollow as it listened to the others. Indeed, a fire may attract more intention than they would want, from both near and far with how the thick scent of smoke tended to travel on the wind inland. The vampiress was not the only one who could keep watch all through the night if needed, as the bird's sight needed not the light of fire or the moon to see in the dark. Ariana seemed content to curl up for the night as the others settled in, a crimson sleeping bag being her place of rest.

It had heard the fight from its distance earlier on, having hidden deep within the swamps to keep from drawing attention. They heard the yells from the sea witch, carried on the wind... Mentions of a Father who sat on a throne of lies. That the icy darkness would be where his heart beats, but in the end it would their's that would be silent. It attempted to try and consider it more deeply, but doing so only seemed to warp and twist something deep within them. Slowly creeping in to cloud thoughts and judgement. The bird stopped for now, instead thinking over what occurred after. The ruts from slithering tails that lead to the ocean, their footsteps stomping over them... Would there be others that would notice the disappearance of the serpent's scouting party? Certainly there would not be just the small group they encountered if they truly wished to take over the land...

At this, the bird simply cocked its head to the side, before turning its attention inland. The murk would be closely watched this night...

The dragon was the last to emerge from the woods. He'd taken a circuitous path through the murk. At times ranging ahead of the others, then dashing back the way they'd come to lag behind, other times disappearing altogether. But he'd never been too far from view of at least one of his companions. Appearing as a rapid flash of red behind the misty thickets whenever he passed on by.

He felt uneasy resting here. They'd traveled in the direction of the prints and snake tracks from earlier, and now they were laying down to sleep at the serpent's doorstep.

Arro walked from the shadows, down the beach and into the tide. Foam lined crescents lapped at his feet, washing away caked on mud and grit, and drawing his eyes to the lavender hued horizon. His gaze swept from one end of the shore to the other. Nothing was amiss on the surface, but that meant so little compared to the vastness of the ocean depths.

Despite his unease, he waded further out to sea to bathe. Rolling over in the waves and shaking the traces of the swamp from his scales. He twisted in the surf, popping his head out for a curious moment to spy at the slivered moon above. He remarked with a twinge of longing, how it could be the breach be so alien at times, and yet simultaneously hold such peaceful familiar sights.

Arro retreated beneath the water, and swam along the shore in crocodillian fashion. Passing by the fire and his companions as they wound down for the night. He walked onto the beach at the opposite end, water cascading off his back in rivulets. And headed towards a rocky promontory of wind blown sandstone, not too far from view of the fire. Atop the precipice he found a nook between boulders to nestle himself into. He curled up there and pulled a wing up to his neck whereupon he could rest his head.

Arro kept his eyes on the tide for a long time before the sounds of the sea eventually got to him, and swept him off to sleep.

Today had been an awful first day. Bun-Bun was still sore from their first battle and apparently there was more to be had. He should've known. Things like this are never solced overnight. The marshmallow bunny had no idea how much more he coukd take. If a minion such as the sea witch was bad enough he dreaded to know what their leader could do (if he could live to see that). He thought things could be worse. He could be dead right now.

Bun-Bun was sitting under a palm tree, eyes wide open and looking as if he was watching the others. He desperately needed the rest. It felt good to finally settle down at the end.

Roughing it? Well yeah, that would be an idea, if Washu wasn't the greatest scientist in the universe and all. She went looking around their campsite for a nicely sized palm tree, one standing relatively straight and with a thick trunk. Finding a good enough specimen close by, she brought up her laptop and started typing into it. Within a few seconds of her doing this, a door appeared on the tree trunk.

The scientist moved to open said mysteriously appearing door, before glancing back towards the others. "If anyone needs a shower or extra food or anything, I could probably set you up. Other than that, see you all in the morning; I've got samples to analyze."

Washu opened the door and went through it, but after a moment poked one hand out to stick a sign on the door. It read as such:

    If Light is On:
    Doing Science, please knock.
    If Light is Off:
    Sleeping, Do Not Disturb.

The light in the door remained on until fairly late in the night, but once Washu felt mostly satisfied with her results, she turned it off and went to bed.

What a long and trying day.

The Leopard Warrior had led their weary group to the coast, the muggy confines of the swamp long behind them. Fresh air, a cool breeze, gentle waves; he paused to close his eyes and inhale, delighting in the crisp sensation. "We will rest here for the night," he said to them. "There is wood for a fire to keep warm and several of us will take turns keeping a sharp eye for any signs of danger. Lady Aya, since you generously volunteered, the first shift will be yours. I will take the second." Tired as he was, it was not polite to let one member of their team shoulder all of the burden. He held up his sword and let it fall effortlessly into the sand, his blade upright. There was no reason to carry it while he slept.

And so he sat, eyes transfixed upon the ocean's horizon while idly monitoring his teammates' antics. Let them have their moments, he thought quietly. They have more than earned this night's comfort. For tomorrow, upon the rising of the sun's first light, they continue. The eve of battle waits for no one...

Thread over. Prepare for Act II.
