    A Temporary Stay

Post by Sir Meta Knight on Tue Aug 06, 2013 5:22 pm

    Time: 6:00 PM
    Date: May 11

If the size of the trees in the forest made Sir Meta Knight feel out of place, the size of the town did made him feel that way tenfold. Even while flying above the heads of his guides, he felt small compared to everything else, and to him, that was one of the most uncomfortable feelings in the world. The buildings were tall and imposing, as were the creatures--though the variety didn't concern him, as Dreamland's races were quite diverse, the average size of the beings he saw was concerning. He remained quieter than normal--though his guides, having only just met him, might not have noticed--as he glided over the streets, listening to Sheik talk and glancing at any notes the woman would write, and only giving short responses or quiet sounds of acknowledgement when he was spoken to. Otherwise, he tried to keep evidence of his discomfort to a minimum.

By the time they arrived at the Stock Pot Inn, Meta Knight's wings were growing a little tired, but he made an effort to fly in place as he watched one of his guides open the doors. They were... probably not made with beings of his stature in mind, but if he wanted to adapt to this world at all, he would just have to get used to flying up in order to open a door. He swooped into the building, surveying the reception area and adjoining lounge.

Uneasy as he felt, the masked warrior was... surprised at the place's appearance--particularly the cozy lounge. The comfy-looking chairs, fireplace, and general warmth of the place immediately reminded him of Dreamland--particularly, the various homes and inns he had seen, which were often the epitome of comfort. Most Dreamlanders loved nothing more than rest and relaxation, and while that wasn't entirely true for Meta Knight, it reminded him enough of his home country to put him at least a bit more at ease. If either of his guides were watching closely, they might have noticed his form relax a little as some tension left him.

First, though, he would have to obtain a room. Swooping over to the reception area, he landed carefully on the counter and allowed his wings to morph back into a cape, which he wrapped around his body.

But the person standing behind the counter was... not quite what he expected. Given the average height of the beings he had seen, he had expected the innkeeper to be... taller? Not that he minded, of course.

Sir Meta Knight gave his guides a quick glance before turning back to the boy at the counter. "Hello," he said, blinking once. "You are the innkeeper here, I take it?"

Here Link was, quietly shuffling through documents on and occasionally glancing up at the clock to wonder when was dinner, what's for dinner and where was dinner (restaurant, Link's room, Link's room or Impa and Sheik's room?) when the front door swung open, the bell atop it chimed merrily. He saw Chell and Sheik in the doorway, smiled and waved only for the wave to slow down when the first entrant literally swooped in.

HOLY FARORE! A GIANT ARMOURED KEESE JUST FLEW IN!

Wait, but keeses don't have armour... Nor were they quite as round. An armoured eyebat? No, they don't come with metal either as far as Link was aware. Logically, the armour should hinder a keese and eyebat's flight as well...

"Aa... um..." he managed to sound as he gaped at the creature flying down to land on his desk. It...talked but that wasn't important. The important bits come in two parts.

One, the being's wings folded in and wrapped around his body to become a cape. Link blinked and was tempted to rub his eyes to make sure this wasn't an illusion. But it was WINGS a second ago. He was pretty sure he saw him fly around with wings and NOT a cape. In fact, so much in a daze was he that his left hand was reach forward on course to poke the material before he realised, pulled his hand back and chuckle sheepishly. Maybe it was a good thing Leaf wasn't here. The fairy would undoubtedly be flying around this new being whilst fanboying.

Second important bit, he was recognised as Innkeeper from the get go. The boy's eyes widened a little then a grin grew across his face as he turned to Chell and Sheik. It's always a pleasant (and an ounce smug) surprise to not be mistaken as a stray child behind the desk or as an employee but instead to be fully recognised as the owner.

He reached for his digiglass and carefully wrote, "Hello. Yes, I'm Link, the innkeeper. Anything I can help with?"

Please say he's here for a room. Please say he's here for a room. Please say he's here for a room.

The trek back to the Stock Pot Inn was as nice a one as ever, even considering Meta Knight's reluctant nature to call the Breach his home for the time being. Sheik fully understood his disbelief over discovering what had happened to his world... that was never easy to learn of course, and she also sympathized with him on another level. He, like so many others, had come here without any knowledge of the presence of others from his world. As far as Sheik knew, Sir Meta Knight was the first and thus far only resident from his home here... he certainly seemed to have the strength and fortitude to triumph over anything though, this unfortunate news included, but the first hurdle he would have to jump would be accepting the fact that there was no way for him to return to his world.

Whilst she had only just met the masked warrior, her heightened perception did enable her to detect some of his discomfort. He was doing a good job of concealing it, but she was still able to pick up on it... as such, the disguised princess tried her best to keep her own awareness of his status to herself, and at the same time, making sure to give him useful information about the inn, the city, and the world itself.

Once they arrived at the Stock Pot Inn, Sheik held the door open for her two companions, exchanging a glance with Chell before watching Meta Knight gracefully swoop into the entryway. The disguised princess waited for a few moments, making certain to give the masked warrior enough time to take in his new surroundings, and once she caught the very slight relaxation in his form, she could not help but smile behind the cloth that currently covered the lower part of her face. It might not have seemed like much, but for him to be able to achieve that after the hostility she had seen in him earlier, Sheik was very glad for her new companion.

As the three continued on to the reception area, Sheik soon grinned outright at catching sight of Link sitting behind the desk. Given the time, she was not at all surprised to see him there, but she was still happy to see her best friend. "Hey Link!" Sheik replied, returning the boy's wave, right before watching Meta Knight fly down to land on the front desk. Link's reaction to the new arrival was much what Sheik had expected, and once Meta Knight greeted him as the innkeeper, Sheik returned the Hero of Winds' grin with another of her own. Nodding to the older boy, Sheik was inwardly very glad that the simple act of recognition for his title had made him that happy, and she had a strong feeling that the nice surprise might carry through the rest of the evening for the Hyruleans. That, plus Link's understandable excitement over their newest resident.

At Link's written question, Sheik glanced to Chell before turning to Meta Knight with a slight nod. She knew that he could fully handle acquiring his own room, but as inn staff herself, she felt that she could at least help out a little more with bridging the request. Looking back to Link with a knowing glint in her eye, Sheik stated, "Link, this is one of the newest arrivals to the Breach... we happened to run into him earlier, and since he is in need of a place to stay, we offered to show him to the inn. I know we have plenty of rooms available right now."

Regardless of how tense their meeting with Meta Knight initially turned out to be, the trek from the forest back to Portal City had been a pleasant one, at least as far as Chell was concerned. It was hard to tell just from her own observations alone whether or not their new companion's relative silence throughout the journey was one of discomfort, or if that was just how he was--either way, she couldn't help but feel a tad for him, and made a point to finally introduce herself along the way. After all, she had been the quiet, withdrawn newcomer once upon a time, and she couldn't fault him for finding the city maybe just a tad bit intimidating. Even now, after having spent a full year on the Breach, it was still a little overwhelming for her to take in at times, although it was getting easier as the days went by. Frequent trips to the forest and mountains helped with that. In any case, the former test subject couldn't help but hope that the warmth and safety of the Inn would help him settle in in much the same way it had her... and, hopefully, help further his acceptance that he was here to stay for the time being.

Once they were at the Inn's front door, Chell stood aside to let Meta Knight through first, both out of courtesy and to give their companion more time to take in the place before they  started talking about getting him a room. Being not much more than a tiny ball with wings and a mask, his body language was naturally harder for her to read, but if what she was seeing in him was true as he swooped around the lobby, he seemed to like it well enough.

Sharing a glance with Sheik, the woman stepped inside, soon perking up when she saw Link waving at them from behind his desk. It was always a pleasure to see the young innkeeper, and as Meta Knight touched down on the desk, Chell had a hard time containing her amusement at her friend's reaction. Bewilderment and a little bit of awe--yeah, that sounded about right. She couldn't say she really blamed him after a greeting like that. Catching on to the boy's pride at immediately being recognized as the owner, she returned his grin with a slight one and a thumbs up of her own, inwardly wondering how often that actually happened with him. As surprising as it might have been to see someone so young running an establishment of this size, experience had taught Chell that Link was more than capable as an innkeeper and a friend, and it was nice to see him recognized as at least one of those things. Nodding to confirm Sheik's statement, the woman shot yet another wry glance at Link, knowing he would be happy to hear it. The look on his face was more than enough of a giveaway.

As far as Meta Knight went, she decided, unsurprisingly, to keep her mouth shut and let the warrior introduce himself on his own terms. She of all people could understand the need for that personal freedom.

Sir Meta Knight watched the innkeeper's reaction, his own expression unreadable. He supposed he should get used to reactions such as this... Apparently even on a planet where beings from other worlds were taken captive, species such as his own were not common. He fought the urge to sigh.

He did not, however, fight the urge to slowly pull his cape away when the innkeeper--Link, Sheik had called him--reached out to touch it. Physical contact was not something he was fond of.

But apparently something Meta Knight had done pleased the boy, given his excited expression, and the knight found himself relatively happy that he had made a good impression from the get-go. However, he had to blink when he saw the object Link held up.

...So not only was it common for beings in this world to be quite tall, but it was also common for them to not talk.

Sir Meta Knight was not sure how to feel about that.

"Link, this is one of the newest arrivals to the Breach... we happened to run into him earlier, and since he is in need of a place to stay, we offered to show him to the inn. I know we have plenty of rooms available right now."

Hearing Sheik's voice, he shook himself out of his thoughts. "Yes," he confirmed, "Sheik has told me about this place. I would like to acquire a temporary place to stay during my time here."

Link’s grin widened even more at his friends’ returning ones along with Chell’s thumbs up. He would had returned the gesture had he not suddenly straightened, determined to act professional for this very new being who had immediately recognised his job title. He did raise an eyebrow at Sheik’s words though, still finding it rather amazing how Portal Breach worked when it came to new people arriving to the world. In a forest so big and dense, his two friends still manage to stumble across a newcomer on their return trip. It made him wonder if perhaps Portal X designed it this way so new people wouldn’t be too disoriented upon arrival.

Then there’s part of him who wonder if this had anything to do with pure Hyrulean luck. They just seem to find random people at the most convenient of places and time sometimes, both in their own times and worlds and here on Portal Breach.

Link nodded, not batting an eyelash at the word ‘temporary’ though inwardly, he was a little disappointed that this masked flyer wasn’t planning to stay for long. Maybe he would stay long enough for Link to hint for a spar or training session. It wasn’t everyday you get to meet flying masked beings who can transform capes to wings. Who knows, maybe once he was used to the inn he would reconsider moving elsewhere. It’s free shelter and free food! Extra stress on the food part.

“Of course. We have four floors. Is there one you’d prefer to stay on?”

A small part of Sheik wondered if she should have mentioned her best friend's inability to talk earlier, but as it was, she was so used to that trait of his that she did not think of it as anything that really needed to be noted. That, plus the fact that Chell had also been in her and Meta Knight's company, the disguised princess had not wanted to touch on either of her friends' muteness unless if there was a very good reason to. After all, even when she had first met Link and then Chell, she had not thought anything of their need to write or pantomime in order to communicate... or in Link's case, exclaim and accent certain articulations as well. The inability to talk was not exactly common in Hyrule, but even so, that start difference between the Hero of Winds and the Hero of Time had not surprised her too much.

Meta Knight might have met three people since he had arrived, two of which happened to be mute, but hopefully, he would not see that coincidence as a correlation to the general status of the residents of the Breach.

Sheik smiled a bit behind the cloth over the lower part of her face at Meta Knight's mention of how he had found about the inn as well as his wish to acquire a room. Deep down, she hoped that he would not only relinquish the thought of it as being only temporary, but even more that he would be able to come to terms with the fact that there was no returning to his world now. It was not an easy fact to absorb, but with time, she hoped that he would be able to without too much pain.

As Link wrote his next set of text describing the layout of the floors and offering a choice of one to Meta Knight, Sheik glanced up to Chell for a moment, inwardly pondering if once the room had been decided upon and their new resident had got settled, if she and Link might invite their friend to dinner tonight. It was getting closer to that time, after all...

Had Chell been able to pick up on Meta Knight's mixed feelings over the fact that two of the three people he had encountered so far today were mute, she might have almost huffed out a laugh. Her own inability to talk was not something she was typically bothered by other than some minor frustration from time to time, and the same seemed to be extended to Link, meaning she was far more likely to be amused at the coincidence than insulted. And it really was just that--coincidence. Besides the innkeeper, she had never encountered anyone else on the Breach that shared this commonality with her, and the fact that she had fallen in with him and his group was really just a happy accident. Of course, her friendship with Link and the Hyruleans was founded on far more than just that, but it was admittedly refreshing to have someone she could relate to on that front now and again. The silent conversations the two of them could hold being among her favorite aspects of it.

Much like her friends, the former test subject didn't do so much as blink when Meta Knight mentioned that his was going to be a temporary stay. Out of all the places you could stay on the Breach, she couldn't recommend anything more than the inn, of course, but she was sure he'd have his reasons if he decided to leave at any point. Whether or not his attempts to leave the Breach were a success--and given how new he was, she'd be surprised if it was--she could see him as the type of guy who wouldn't want to stay confined to one place for too long. Where ever this place took him, she hoped he'd find satisfaction, at some point.

Watching as Link presented his new set of text to the newcomer, Chell pursed her lips, wondering if he'd wind up rooming near by any of them. Given his wings, she wouldn't be surprised if he chose one of the higher floors, but there was always a chance he'd surprise her. Feeling Sheik's eyes on her, she glanced at the boy, soon raising an inquiring eyebrow. Her friend looked like he was pondering something, and given their situation, she couldn't help but wonder what it was. Perhaps she'd find out once this was done with.

Sir Meta Knight nodded at Link's question; he had noticed the building's height when he had first approached it. Had he not been so lost in thought earlier, he might have considered what floor he would like to stay on, but for now, he considered his options.

Staying on the first floor seemed an easy pick. It would mean less wandering around the building to get to the exit, and he wouldn't have to bother with stairwells. It wasn't as though he had a problem with stairs--he hadn't back in Dreamland, but then... that was Dreamland. Once again he recalled that this place was built for much larger beings, so he was not certain just how difficult climbing stairs meant for larger creatures would be. Not to mention, as he walked up the stairs, someone might tri--

He banished that line of thought immediately.

Anyway, he could always fly up the stairs if he needed to, he supposed, or take a lift, if there was one. And if he needed to leave quickly, well... he did have wings. Perhaps staying on one of the higher floors wouldn't be too much of a burden--plus, it would give him a good view of the city below. He often enjoyed the higher view in his office back home, so perhaps this view would make him feel a little more comfortable. Plus, maybe staying on the higher floor would enable him to take off from a higher spot, so he could glide over the city... that would be a good way to get his bearings.

Not to mention, there was just something about being up higher than most other people that appealed to him.

Meta Knight shook himself out of his thoughts and looked back at Link. "May I obtain a room on the fourth floor?"

Unlike Chell, Link had met two others who cannot express themselves vocally and had to rely on written communication. RITA was one, Turbo Man was another and Uriel might count as another but he doesn't write and had managed to find his voice once more... or a voice at least - which was a good thing because his handwriting was like chicken scratch. But whilst they all shared this similar predicament as Link, the boy never got really close to them like he did Chell. It's not because the other non-speakers weren't friendly. Something about the former test subject just clicked the moment they met. Something about Chell that was very.... comfortable and approachable for the Hyruleans were the best word he could find. And then let's not forget both the Hyruleans' and Chell's rather intense love for food.

Speaking of food, Sheik was not the only one glancing up at Chell. When Link noticed the shift of attention in his best friend, he too snuck a sidelong glance to his fellow mute and sent an accompanying single eyebrow waggle. He wasn't sure what was going through Sheik's mind but this Link wants to know what Chell is having for dinner to night and whether it's yummy or not.

Eyebrow message sent (regardless of it being decipherable or not), he focused back on Meta Knight still on his desk. The innkeeper cannot help but extend his grin just slightly to hear this interesting masked being choose the fourth floor. All those with the ability to fly seems to favour the higher floors. He nodded and unlocked the drawer of cardkeys, extracted one and placed it on the table.

Next he drew out the forms. A simple one which lists the rules of the inn followed by four more lines at the bottom:

    Room: 427
    Date: 11th May
    Tenant Name: _________________
    Tenant Signature: ______________

Then another one, a pack of forms, with a note saying 'Optional'. It was the Portal Breach Citizen Identification Card Application which may or may not be still be active - Link wasn't too sure since he haven't been to the hospital recently to check and they had the applications he had sent had yet to bounce back. But free healing at the hospital! That was the selling point!

Finally, he placed a pen on the desk and only once it was set down did he took a good look at Meta Knight's hands. Can he write?

Glancing back towards Link once Meta Knight made his floor request, Sheik raised her eyebrows slightly as the thought of the possible rooms on the fourth floor began to run through her head. That was already the floor that she, Impa, and the Link from her time called home, not to mention Aya and a few others… it was certainly a good floor, and not exactly crowded, and the disguised princess soon could not help but smile slightly at the thought of the newest resident of the Breach living on it as well. She knew that his adjustment to life here was definitely going to take some time, but hopefully, his living in closer proximity to the Hyruleans would help with that… they were all ready and willing to help out just about anyone without being pushy about it. That, plus the fact that she had been one of the first to meet the masked warrior did strike her as something relatively minor that might prove useful for him.

As Link drew up the forms, Sheik noted that he was set to be in Room 427… just two rooms down from the Hero of Time's room, and three from her own. Granted, that landed his room on the other side of the building from theirs, but the numbers still counted for something.Thinking to herself that that would be a perfect spot for him she waited a couple of moments before stating, "It's a good floor to be on… I know it's a new place, but I hope you find your room to be nice."

Whilst she did think about possibly mentioning that he could modify the room somewhat to better suit his needs, especially given his smaller stature, she decided to hold off on bringing that up just yet. After all, Sir Meta Knight was still very convinced that he was going to be able to return home… and considering that, it was probably for the best that he think of that idea on his own before it was to be discussed.

Unfortunately for Chell, her intuition and innate knowledge of non-verbal communication wasn't nearly highly tuned enough to decipher Link's eyebrow waggle. Once she saw the boy glancing up at her, she returned the gesture with a quirked eyebrow of her own and tilted her head to the side with a slight frown, wondering what had the two of them acting so strangely. Was there something on her face? Or was someone she knew nearby? Making a quick scan of the room and finding no one, she mentally sighed, deciding to let it go with a shrug. If her hunch was right, they probably had something food related to ask her, but that was neither here nor there at the moment. Best wait until they got their new companion situated to approach them on it.

Focusing back on the present, the woman noted that Link was pulling out the usual forms, and that Meta Knight, predictably, had chosen the top floor. Smirking a bit to herself, she decided it was now her turn to do some subtle gesturing of her own and cocked a wry eyebrow at Sheik, although the boy would most likely be able to figure out what it meant. So, the Hyruleans (sans this particular Link) would be sharing a floor with this guy, huh? Hopefully for their sake, he wouldn't be particularly noisy... honestly, he didn't seem at all like the type, but it was hard to say going off of just their brief interaction with him in the woods. Still, teasing aside, she figured it was a good fit for him. Especially since he seemed to enjoy being up high so much.

And, like Sheik, she hoped he'd find his room satisfactory enough. It was really difficult to tell what kind of environment he had come from just by looking at him alone.

Sir Meta Knight stole a quick glance between the innkeeper and the two people behind him, getting the feeling there was some sort of communication going on that he was missing. Some part of him hoped that he was wrong about his initial observations and that most of the beings here did not communicate nonverbally, but he tried not to get his hopes up. If they did, then he would simply have to adapt, just as he would have to adapt to being around people that were significantly taller than him--that was all there was to it.

When Link pulled out the forms, Meta Knight immediately began looking over them in interest. Things such as safety measures, floor plans, facilities, other notes--everything seemed very well-organized. There was much more here than he would have expected to find in an inn back home, where there would be a small room and a complimentary breakfast buffet. This place seemed much nicer, he was pleased to see--if he had to stay here for longer than expected, at least he would be staying at a fine inn.

He glanced at the other packet of forms--he would look at that in a moment--and picked up the pen. While he did wear gloves, he could write very comfortably with them; many Dreamlanders lacked actual fingers, but that did not impede their ability to write in the slightest. He printed his name--Sir Meta Knight--on one line, and signed it below, his signature appearing in clean, non-flowery cursive.

Next was the optional forms, which he flipped through, frowning at the questions. A few of the questions he could not answer as of yet--he did not know the exact address of this place, and he was not sure of just what year this was in this world, since, he assumed, it would not be quite the same as Popstar's years--and a few, he was secretly ashamed to admit, he simply did not know. His species lived for so long that he'd honestly forgotten his own age.

"I will fill this out at a later time, if that is all right," Meta Knight said, holding up the packet to indicate it. "Is there anything else I must know?"

Link watched, a little nervous as the being read over the accompanying inn details and rules on the form. If there was one thing that had been constantly updated since his taking over of the establishment, it was that sheet of paper his new tenant was reading over right now.  It had gone through many revisions and with a fair bit of pride at stake, the staff continuously work towards making the Stock Pot Inn better and better with each passing month. Whilst he knew that they were certainly above passable level in terms of organisation now, to have it under scrutiny still made him a tad bit nervous.

The innkeeper then tried very hard not to stare as his new tenant took the pen and started writing with it. He suppose it was like writing with a fist-like grip on the pen but it was still amazing to witness. As the first form was returned to him, Link’s eyebrow twitched up. SIR Meta KNIGHT…...wait… waitwaitwait. Hold the Triforce pieces! Are you saying he has a KNIGHT living on his premises now? This guy was a KNIGHT?

Link’s mouth popped up and he looked from the form to Meta Knight then back to the form in stunned silence. Wow…

He had ponies. He had cybertronians. He had winged people, a dragon rider, professors, wizard, cat person and even a explosive penguin minion-things staying in his inn before but this was the first time he’d seen a knight. Honestly, he was expecting somebody a bit more taller… like a Dark Nut sized person but on second thought, a knight of Meta Knight’s size and flying ability might be even more of a nightmare to face in battle than a large armoured being.

The boy cleared his throat, returned once more to a professional approach especially now that he knew he was in front of a person with substantial rank/title (whether its of equivalent value in this world or not) and shook his head. “That is all. If you need help with anything, we’re always happy to lend a hand.”

He glanced at Sheik, wondering if there’s anything he missed out and that she might like to add as a member of staff. She was a princess under disguise after all! She must be more used to dealing with knights and knowing more of them than he did.

There was not so much intent silent communication going on so much as an unspoken link between two close friends, but regardless of Sir Meta Knight's catching the couple of looks exchanged between Link and Sheik, hopefully he would realize soon enough that communication here was much the same as it was in his own world. Between the disguised princess' own speech as well as any of the conversations they might have caught in passing on the trek back to the inn, that was good evidence in his favor… although for the latter, it was understandable if he did not catch as much conversing en route given his own focus on adapting to the strange city.

Sheik watched as Meta Knight looked over the stack of well-organized information that Link had handed him, and she inwardly hoped that the hard copy of notes and everything regarding the Stock Pot Inn would help him feel even more comfortable here than what she had already briefed him on as they had first journeyed here.

As Meta Knight moved to write his name on the form for the new room, Sheik could not help but grin at seeing Link's reaction to catching that their newest resident was in fact a knight. She herself had been quite used to knights back in her world, but her best friend seemed to have almost a starstruck-awe for them at times. Maybe it was part of his inherent fascination with the past of Hyrule or his own general curiosity, but no matter what, Sheik thought it was rather sweet, and was always happy to share more with him relevant to their subject.

The masked warrior was undoubtedly different from the knights of their world, but he still had the same air of valor about him. Meta Knight's adaptation to this world might take him a bit more time, but even so, the disguised princess had a strong feeling that his own personality would help him out there regardless of his apparent stubbornness.

Nodding to second Link's words before smiling at his glance, Sheik turned to Meta Knight, adding, "If you need us at all outside of business hours, I actually live on the fourth floor myself, and Link lives right below me on the third. Save that… the room is all yours, so I hope that you find your temporary home comfortable."
