A Dark and Treacherous Place... [!]

Post by Universal NPC on Tue Aug 06, 2013 5:07 am

    Time: Morning
    Date: August 2nd, 0004

    Spoiler:

The swamps... Not many souls ventured where the sun's warmth could not reach. It was dark here; light had become scattered through thick canopies where it dully shone in small pockets and nothing more. Through the suffocating murk and muck, the air remained saturated with humidity and noxious odors. Death reigned supreme in the land of decaying browns and greens. Aside from clumps of moss and rot, there stirred life - croaking toads and flickering thoraxes from buzzing insects. Larger creatures sought refuge in the gloomy water, obscured. Their teeth and claws awaited those foolish enough to take their chances. A dangerous place for the unwary and unprepared, truly.

This land is where the warriors were brought, the first stepping stone now before them and their path as twisted and gnarled as the ancient groves all around. It was time to create a fitting strategy before pushing blindly forward...

They had arrived... The Leopard Warrior was the first to make a motion, his feet planted securely on the moist earth. And so we meet again... He cut his thoughts short and quickly descried their immediate surroundings, arms crossed tightly against his bare chest. The usual ambiance that proliferated this place had not seemed to notice their landing. Nothing had outright attacked them, as well. Very good, but they were not here to admire the wetland's precarious beauty. With his muscled back turned to the group, the contemplative Leopard Warrior kept his eyes fastened ahead. "The tribe's camp is due south," he said, staring in the aforementioned direction. "We will need to head out soon, but first we must devise a plan of approach. This land is misleading." Any wrong step and their numbers could rapidly be diminished.

He will patiently wait until the rest were ready. A weighty hand conveniently rested on the hilt of his sword should something leap forth from the gloomy waters.

It was strange to come to a place of personal ascension again. She hadn't actually even thought she would come back to the swamps in the near future at all. The sounds of creatures, bird and insects was a familiar and soothing lullaby that left her feeling tension and the tremors of anger lessen. She stood a little behind the Leopard Warrior, staring out of the dense murky waters, wonder just how far south the tribe's camp was. As Aya figured, she had barely scrapped the surface of what was within the dithering swamps though considering how the lizards had first reacted to her it was probably for the best they did not cross paths.

Giving a low thoughtful hum, the draculina ran a hand over her gantz suited forearm before speaking up about a good plan of a approach."Considering the ever present dangers from wildlife or natural environment it would be best to have someone less likely to be harmed by said things go first to test grounds. I would be more than happy to offer myself to go along first. I don't run the risk of drowning if I fall in anywhere and I doubt anything will be very keen on eating me." Oh the joyous wonders of limbo living, things really just didn't scare you like they should. But really, she did not mind at all as long as she was useful and genuine in intent it gave her good cause to be here. Now all what really mattered was hearing the opinions of others and their own guide.

The swamp, surprisingly even though she had spent so much time in the wild, Tally had spent very little of it ever near the swamp. Sure she had explored the edges of it, examined some of it's wildlife. But she had never had a real reason to go into it. Well, she had had one reason before, a plant that she had wanted to obtain. However the walk from the mountains down into the swamp would have been far too long, and by the time she would have arrived there it would have been dark.

It probably would have been the death of her, so she opted to let it wait for another day, but had ultimately never gotten around to it.

Her own gantz suit was still inactive, wrapped around her wrist in it's hibernating state. A scout would be the best option... She just didn't feel it was wise to send Aya by herself. Get a lay of the land, figure out what's going on. But I wouldn't go by yourself Aya, someone should go with you. Tally would be happy to go.

Of course no one ventured into the swamps. Not even Bun-Bun, who detested sunlight and just heat in general. If it weren’t the heat that had driven him away, it would definitely be its moist environment. So soggy he wouldn’t be surprised if he became a walking sponge sometime soon. What made things worse was the constant buzzing in his ear from those pesky insects. Why, there were so many of them that not even the bug repellent could keep them away from him. He should’ve come a bit more prepared for this fight as much as say Aya was (Gantz Suits are nice to share, right? He should’ve snatched one from Keaton when he had the chance instead of being so focused on planning to make some lousy profit.), but he’ll live. He’s lived countless other times before, right? His body may be fragile, but he was tougher than a nail and more stubborn than a fly.

The first thing that came to mind of the marshmallow bunny was to have someone scout the path, only that Aya was the one to voice it, followed by the woman with freakishly long hair. ”Well, if you guys want to do it, then knock yourselves out, I guess.” Bun-Bun replied with a shrug. ”Just remember to watch each other’s backs and don’t get lost.” Bun-Bun would wait here, probably. Or just follow the others. Give or take.

Guess what? A enhanced sense of smell in a swamp...WAS...NOT....FUN! It was murder, Vincent was trained to handle unpleasent things like this. Good thing or he would be violently ill by now. Clad in his fighting gear, the gunner's eyes swept over the swamp alertly. He noted the normal sounds of the swamp, insects and animals then turned his attention to Miss Valentine and Tally as they spoke.

So Miss Valentine was willing to scout out a path alone, Vincent didn't like that and it didn't help when Tally offered to go with her. Honor demanded he not allow two women to walk into danger when he was there. Common sense warned him that both women were stronger than he was, so discretion must be used. Word it wrong and they might take it badly, so carefully, Valentine. Remember diplomacy. "I would be glad to accompany you, Miss Valentine or both of you if you wiish."

It had taken quite a bit of her money, but Ariana had bought a potion that was supposed to heal her up in battle. She was curious about the other wares, but since she couldn't afford it she decided to just stick with what she had. She lingered around long enough to hear that they would regroup tomorrow. She said her good byes and left briskly to the A&W, working her shift and informing her boss. She used her vacation time and offered to use unpaid leave if the trip went beyond that time. She prepared a backpack for herself, bringing along fresh water in a canteen, several changes of clean clothes, a bit of food, and a simple hunting knife. The last thing she had left behind in the city was a note on her door in case anyone tried to get in touch with her.

She was dressed in a white tank top, khaki shorts and a pair of boots, ready for walking in the moist and humid marshlands. She could feel herself sweating already! Still, the marshlands were very alluring to look at, it reminded her of her short stay in Louisiana. If it weren't for the various dangerous animals and creatures in places like these, they could be so relaxing. Wildlife was obviously prevalent here, as the chorus of noises told her. She might have brought some food with her, but she knew she could hunt quite fine and get food like that. Perhaps there was a nice, juicy deer here...

She turned to face their guide. The tribe's camp was due south then? "Does anyone have a compass?" Her head turned around in every direction, trying to ascertain which way was 'South'. A plan of approach, that was a good idea. She nodded in agreement, whatever they chose they needed to be careful. A black suited Miss Valentine offered to scout ahead, and Tally suggested that someone go along with her. Vincent volunteered as well. Ariana shuffled in place for a moment before speaking up. "If too many people go, then the scouting will be a bit too large to be very discreet...maybe just two people at the most? In the meantime, those left behind could think how to continue. I think it might be a good idea to have our strongest fighters both in front of and behind, just in case something leaps out."

Ah yes, the swamps... Murky, stinking, wet lands they were. Filled to the brim with insects and various reptilian and amphibious life alike. While most of the group was below, moving about the soggy ground, something fluttered about the canopy, weaving between the boughs of low hanging branches swiftly. It had been following those lead by the Leopard warrior since they left the city, in varying colors and shapes, but keeping pace nonetheless. Although, with a leader as different looking as the leopard faced man, they were hard to lose track of.

With a flap of long wings, the bird landed in one of the more wilted looking of trees. If anyone were to look in its direction, they would find the creature to be rather unassuming. A snake bird, long necked and sharp billed, tilted their head to look down at them all curiously. Though as they began to speak, the pupil of its ruby eye dilated and contracted, zoning in on the group's conversation. So far it seemed that Aya, Tally, Bun-Bun and Vincent had arrived... Though the marshmallow rabbit looked as though he came under prepared, given how sugar tended to react with water.

As the group moved on, the bird flapped its wings once more and flew to higher branches, idly trailing the group from above.

Arro alighted upon the topmost boughs of an ancient and gigantic willow. Bending the tree beneath his weight so that it's fronds knelt to kiss the murky water. He peered around, observing the vibrant gloom through which they were about to proceed. Then scanned those who had arrived thus far. Taking note of a peculiar water bird among the ranks.

He stared into the water, listening to the Leopard's words and the nervous croaking of frogs in tandem.

"Shall I fly ahead, scout the safest path?" He offered, his voice thrumming with a contemplative resonance.

Hmm... The Leopard Warrior listened carefully, noting how several had offered their services to patrol the path ahead. Although the young woman, Ariana Lee, was right. Too many people and the idea of a scouting party became moot. "We will form two units," he said. "One to explore the west and the other to inspect the east. It is better to cover our flanks as we traverse this dangerous area. Lady Aya, Sir Valentine; you will take to the west. Lady Tally and Sir Arrogath; this leaves the east to you." That kept Lee, Hakubi, and Bun-Bun with the Leopard Warrior, as well as a curious snake bird. He paused to gaze upward at it for a few moments, eventually returning his stern gaze to the south. "Take no longer than five to ten minutes at most," came his instructions. "Once you return, we will continue forward and further devise a strategy to counter whatever it is you may find. Lady Lee, we will use your idea of bolstering our group with the strongest in both front and back to prevent predictable attacks."

The only downside was having a vulnerable middle, but perhaps they could position their fighters accordingly. Everything depended on what the two scouting parties found, first - if anything at all. "We will remain here and await your arrival. Good luck. Should you find any trouble, demand for reinforcements. We will be there to lend our aid."

Unprepared? Maybe he was a bit unprepared. Just maybe. Armor would have been nice, but the marshmallow bunny made up for it with an opulent offense. His Lindworm Lance’s sharp end pieced into the Earth as he carried it like a staff and this time, his lollipop of his was tightly strapped to his back, making things easier for him to carry around. The other things he brought were pretty small and he had managed to conceal away in his pockets. Including the weed. That gross and soggy weed.

With people volunteering for the role as scouts, it made things run a lot easier. Only one thing seemed to bother him, though; Ariana’s suggestion.

”Predictable attacks?” Bun-Bun asked. ”And what about the middle? If you ask me, we should balance everything out. Make no part any weaker compared to the other. That way, the only way they could possibly predict us would be by our impression and appearance and even then that would be even more unpredictable.” It’s always good to have the stronger people keep much weaker people’s backs. He rarely used the tactic since there was never a need, but in a situation like this, it’d complement each other.

”Wait!” Bun-Bun shouted, rummaging around until he pulled a walkie-talkie out from his pocket. ”Take this, just in case.” the marshmallow bunny dug around and threw one at Aya, Tally, and even the Leopard Warrior. He didn’t carry too many of those things. They were huge bulky things with an old fashioned antenna sticking from them but other than that, it would most certainly camouflage well with the flora and best of all, it was basically indestructible. It’d take a lot of force to break one of those things. Why do you think he had them for so long?

The dragon who had joined their group last had also offered his services as a scout. Although she was wary about him attracting attention, she did give his wings a glance over. His ability to fly would be a boon, and he could fly ahead and see what there was to see. She looked around at their gathered group, wondering to herself where Max's friend was. There didn't seem to be anyone new around here, and the only other beings were animals. Assorted birds, reptiles, bugs, the list went on.

She looked back over at the Leopard Warrior as he spoke, two groups to scout then? "That sounds good..." Two scout groups would see more than one after all. She glanced around the surrounding area again, still unable to tell which way was East, West, South or North. It all sort of looked the same. Aya and Vincent were one team, Tally and Arro the other team. The scouting would be brief, and they would return so they could discuss how to deal with whatever would come their way. She blinked at the addressing of 'Lady Lee', and fiddled with the hem of her shirt. "Oh...I-I'm glad my idea was a good one, then. Thanks." She smiled, glad to be of some sort of help.

She looked over at the rabbit though, considering his words. "That depends on who and how many strong people we have. We may have to worry about the Zsssh'rr-gun as our first priority, but we have to keep the other animals here in mind. Most of us may seem like a snack, and most predatory animals strike from either the back of the front. Striking at the middle splits the group in two, making two groups they have to chase rather than just one." Although she never really had the 'privilege' of hunting in a pack, the instinct was still there for her now. The methods still worked for her as a lone wolf too, if she stood towards picking off the young or elderly. She turned her gaze to the scouts, giving them a nod. "Good luck." They might need it.

Well, as long as this didn't mean going inside a giant sea monster again, Washu was good with whatever. She was still sort of hovering a few inches off the ground, though. That ground looked kind of nasty, she didn't particularly fancy ruining her shoes. She could pull a new pair from subspace, but why do that if you didn't have to?

As for staying in communication with the scouts, the scientist had to admit the bunny had the right idea. "Well, that's one way to keep in contact with everyone, and Ryo-Ohki will be keeping an eye on things from above, too. If she sees anyone in trouble, she'll try to help out, and tell me to gather everyone else and come running."

Yep, there were definitely advantages to having a telepathic link to a sentient starship.

Two units? Well that worked far better than just going herself out into the murk of the swamps. They would go east and west and then come back, and that was a sounder plan by far. She was sound in this plan as it was tweaked with good input from Ariana to the dangers of having too large a party. She nodded at only taking five to ten minutes to check. Looking to Vincent she hoped that this went without any hitches.

Just as the vampiress was ready to go, the marshmallow magical now had monstrous device of who knew what. She caught it and simply stared at it for a long moment. Well she gained a big block of maybe hitting herself over the head with. Hopefully it was Phazon Free. Handing it off to the Crimson gunman, because he unlike herself could accidentally crush it without a second thought and not to sound old she and tech like that didn't mix. The draculina gave a wave to Ariana who wished them all luck, and turned towards the west. "We should go now, Mr. Valentine. It would be best to go and be back before anything causes a rumble down below." Double luck had it with them that they had kind eyes in the sky ready to help them if they required it.

The plan was good and Miss Lee had made excellent suggestions as well. Clever young lady. Leopard Warrior split them into two teams, Arro and Tally, himself and Miss Valentine. "Ten minutes, agreed, thank you." It was a good amount, just enough to look around without leaving those left behind vulnerable for to long.

Bun-Bun told them to wait and passed out old fashioned walkie talkies, another useful item. He was familiar with them thankfully. Both Arro and Miss Habuki told them to contact them if they required aid, having two for air support would be useful, though the dense trees might be problematic. Ah well, he was quite capable of climbing about anything if he had too. Miss Valentine passed the walkie-talkie to him and he looked it over briefly before securing it. "Agreed, Miss Valentine." He headed off with her, knowing his compass points very well. This was where his Turk training would once again be very useful. He also hoped that nothing would go wrong, but he was aware people made mistakes. Yes, himself included, but all you could do was your best.
