    Opportunity Knocking [!]

Post by Ss'ruul on Thu Aug 01, 2013 5:43 am

    Time: Early Morning
    Date: August 1st, 0004

The sun was already creeping high, a premature heat beginning to settle. It was going to be a hot and arid day for the first of August.

There were, thankfully, no summer disasters - at least not yet. The citizens within Portal City had been wary at first after recalling past events, but they were pleasantly surprised to find their bustling metropolis intact. They greeted the new day happily and went about their lives with a grateful, although shaky, sense of normalcy. Today may actually bring about a sign of things to come, perhaps.

    Creeeeak... Creeeeak...

Wait, the wind carried upon it a smell - a new smell.

The citizens who lived on the city's outskirts noticed the strange attraction, first. There were caravans, wooden and beaten, that approached from the southern highway. It was the highway few had bothered to travel. There was nothing innately odd about traveling caravans - they came and they went, no trouble started and no trouble finished. Sometimes they brought mysterious trinkets or exotic spices, many wares coming from lands far beyond. This was to be expected and no one gave such adventurers a hard time, save for the local thugs. These caravans, however... Suffice to say, Portal City's thieves and rabble will offer no inconvenience to this morning's visitors.

Scales, marred with dried mud and stale blood, glistened dully beneath the rising sun. A string of people marched their way toward the city entrance with strange livestock in tow; their faces and body resembled that of lizards and reptiles. Should any dare to disturb these otherworldly individuals, heed: sharp teeth and curled talons lied in a fool's future. Crude spears and stone weapons were carried proudly, but an unspoken weight burdened their shapely owners.

These people, whoever they were, were in tatters. Their caravans were in disrepair, their faces long and tired; they had come from an exhausting and troublesome exodus. Did they make this trek of their own volition or had something forced their hand?

It was hard to say. The leader of the groups, a warrior covered with onyx scales and rippling with muscle, raised up his ornate spear and hissed. The command was obeyed without question and the travelers guided their possessions and animals to an uninhabited lot in the city outskirts. From there they began to set up a small camp, women and children attending to food and refreshments while the more athletic men patrolled their settlement's border. Soon the bizarre aromas and smells mingled with the air, and word had begun to spread...

There were outsiders in Portal City and with them came the unfamiliar. It may be wise to investigate.

    Spoiler:

Quest Thread [!]: Strangers from a foreign land have temporarily arrived in Portal City. Browse upon their inventories and see what they have to say - something was happening... Don't you want to find out?

A hot and arid day, eh? Good thing Bun-Bun was wearing his daylight bracelet.

Yes, he had to admit that things had been rather quiet in the city. Nothing happened since Ra Moon. Though, today was something special for the bunny because apparently in Portal Breach, August 1st was the new October 31st. In which bad things happen. He hadn’t forgotten Ridley’s Phazon fiasco. I mean, that happened literally a year ago! How could he forget that?

    And now, there was this.

What was this anyway? Some kind of invasion of lizard people? That, or the Leopard Warrior called. He said he wanted his lizard army back. With the insult up his sleeve, he quickly disregarded it. This didn’t look like a formal invasion he’d been used to seeing. This was an exodus of some kind. Their vehicles were beaten and they looked as if they’ve been traveling for miles just for the sake of getting away from someone or something. He glared at them suspiciously from where he was lurking and kept his distance. For now, at least. It was a whole lot safer compared to approaching them, insulting them and getting killed for it later.

While the newcomers had been setting up their camp and wares, another stranger was making their way through the outer district. Dark skinned and amber eyed, a tall figure dressed in a pair of faded jeans, grey-blue t-shirt and walking shoes approached the area of the strange caravan. His dark hair was cut short and combed back, as well groomed and straight as his proud posture. He paused upon seeing the caravan, observing the strange figures that moved around it,  organizing their wares and cooking food. Beneath their ragged clothes the man could see scales, snouts, claws... A reptilian race if he had ever seen one.

He glanced over to a few who carried spears, noting their bloodied appearance and the dried mud on their scaled hides. The type that certainly had a story to tell, he thought to himself as he decided to make his way to the temporary shop. The man always liked to hear a good story. Pavement turned to dirt and mud as he approached, stepping in a manner to avoid dirtying his shoes if he could help it. The man walked over to one of the settlement patrols, giving him a pleasant wave before speaking.

"Greetings, it seems like your people have come a long way for a visit to the city." He stated pleasantly in a graveled voice, glancing up at the patrol's spear and over the powerful arms that held it before returning his gaze to the lizard-like person. "I hope you did not run into much trouble on the way here, though with such interesting wares I would not be surprised if you needed to beat away thieves." The man added, looking past the scaly patrol man and nodding towards the caravan behind him.

Animals, food, trinkets... He had seen many, but none like these before.

Due to the heat, Ariana left the inn in a white tank top and a pair of simple capris. The fewer layers of clothing, the better chances you had of beating the heat. Ariana had been in the middle of her usual walk around the city before her shift at the A&W started, through she found herself stopped by a smell. A new smell that tickled at the inside of her nostrils and urged her to find the source of it. She glanced down at her watch, decided she had time to spare, and began to make her way to the source of the smell.

The smell lead her to the outer district of the city, a place that was usually very unsavory and a place she avoided. Still, she could handle herself. The smells continued to waft in the air, some rather delicious and others that made her cringe. She found the source, but kept her distance, staring out. Caravans, a lot of caravans, had come here of all places to stop. Reptilian livestock and reptilian people were all around, carrying weapons. She gave the weapons a timid stare, though seeing as they weren't already attacking it was obvious that this wasn't attack, even more so since they had brought women and children with them. They looked like they had seen hell.

She glanced around at all of the people, from the younger ones to the athletic ones that paroled their borders. Another man appeared, this one more human. With dark skin, a tall figure, and a few good muscles, Ariana tiptoed her way towards him til she was near enough to him that if these people got rough, she wouldn't be alone. "Y-yes, do you need any help? Are you new here?" She had never seen these reptilian people before, after all. Perhaps they had all arrived at once and could use some assistance.

There was one other that had noticed the arrival of the lizard folk. Vincent had seen the caravan and had also caught the strange smells. He had went to investigate then admittedly ignored it. It wasn't his business, nor his right to interfere, but he did shadow the group just in case.  Old habits again. Watch, listen and evaluate risk.  Always a wise decision, but the arrival of Bun-Bun, the stranger and Ariana changed the plans.

Clad in his battle gear, the gunner emerged from his cover warily and approached. He nodded politely to those that were there before turning to the lizard men to see how thay would answer the questions that had already been asked.  He seemed relaxed, even bored, but he was ready to fight if necessary.....some of the things looked vaguely familiar, but most of it was a complete mystery to him. No surprise there, a lot of the more advanced tech was a mystery to him. He'd missed thirty years of tech devolpment, so sue him!

Washu had been idly watching the news earlier when the announcement of there being newcomers was made, and decided checking this out was probably a bit less boring than watching the computer systems tend to her latest round of experiments. Yes, soil analysis had to be done, but it was still tame enough for the computers to handle on their own.

She let things to their own devices at least until she decided to come back, and teleported out to the south gate. The scientist hadn't known the city HAD gates, but there was a first for everything. At the very least, the gate made a nice perch for her to land on and scope things out from above before going right into the thick of things.

Lizard people, huh? Back in her own universe, there were the Wau, who were generally cat-like people. Not daunted by this in the slightest, Washu jumped down from the gate, using her flight abilities to slow her fall, and headed to the no longer empty lot where the lizards seemed to be setting up a trading post of sorts. Oooh, there were all sorts of interesting items here . . .

Much like many of those gather present on this hot day, there was one more who would soon be joining among their ranks. This newcomer was walking steadily along, a daily walk before the start of day was bound to bring good things or a caravan of scaly folks looking well as nicely as worse for wear could go. Thought new people meant a possibilities of well something new of course and a certain vampiress needed something new for once. Hurrying past the less savory she found herself on the outer district, the actual edge of the city.

From beneath the shade of her parasol she could see that she was in fact not the only one out and about today. Who all was present. She squinted as she took into account a unknown man, a Miss Ariana Lee, Vincent , a woman with quite the head of a lovely shade of pink and one itty bitty little rat or a rabbit as people called them. A small grumble escaped before Aya strayed closer to the gather group of lizard folk as they set up with even worse look wagons. Goodness it looked like these people had quite a rough ride about things, maybe doing some purchases or trading would give out a helping hand.

Why not after all? New people meant rare, unseen treasures and frankly the only time she remember such beings was during the disaster that was Ra-Moon and they had proved their salt then, ten fold she would say.

A colourful assortment of onlookers... Numerous tongues licked the air, slitted eyes training themselves upon the many strange and contrasting faces. The majority of these j'nsa - outsiders - chose to remain further away to observe. Only two seemed to approach, a tall man with clay skin and a young woman who smelled of the beasts. Their bravery was rewarded with a spear thrust mere inches from their faces.

"Sss...! Why do you approach, j'nsssa?" a warrior demanded, scales emerald and teeth having tasted flesh. The hiss drew more attention and the rest of the camp became on edge. "Thisss is our camp - our qyuun. We did not invite you asss blood-kin..."

Additional patrols had arrived by now, brandishing their spears menacingly and prepared to defend their meager camp. Your kind was not welcome here. "Go away!" hissed another, this one's hide a spectacular coral.

"Viir'sek..." came a harsh command. Immediately the patrols stood at attention with one crisp motion, their spears erect at their sides. Now approached the camp's leader, the robust warrior with black scales and a critical eye from earlier. He made his advance to the front of the camp and placed a thick hand upon the hilt of one of his stone cleavers. The growl that came next ought to be telling. "Of what busssinesss do you have asssking about our livesss?" the warrior requested to know. "We have traveled far and wide... Where the sssun kisssessss the earth and where darknesss imitatesss day... Thisss isss all you need to know, j'nsssa." The leader noticeably hesitated when the young woman had asked a question in exchange.

She-Who-Smells-of-the-Wild wrote:"Y-yes, do you need any help?"
A sudden outcry of hissing erupted from the camp, man and woman turning to themselves to discuss. Again, the black-scaled warrior snarled but this time he was not so quick to dismiss these ugly creatures. "We doubt you can help usss, j'nsssa. Our sssuffering isss great..." Although... He swiveled his scaled head around, noticing how alien this city's architecture was for the first time. A thought...

"We were guided to your city," the leader said at last. A level of distrust had been warily lowered. "We ssseek refuge - ssshelter. Our land isss at war and we are all that isss left of our tribe. Without our gl'ugak and warrior cassste, we had no choice... Your city may be the lassst place we are sssafe."

For once a disaster had not happened here, but that was not important. There was another world out there.

Ariana's bespectacled brown eyes took a glance around as more people showed up. Some were recognizable, such as Miss Valentine, others weren't, such as the woman with pink hair. And some were hard to put her finger on, such as the man with a gauntlet. She got the feeling that she might have met him once or twice, though she couldn't put a name to his face. Everyone else stood back more though, which meant it was she and this tall tanned man at the forefront. She looked over and gave him an awkward smile, before turning to face the lizard men once more.

    Ss'ruul wrote:"Sss...! Why do you approach, j'nsssa?"

Before she could properly look at how diverse the lizard men were, she and the tanned man found themselves with some spears pointed at them, ready to stab at the first show of aggression. "Oh...u-uhm..." She winced slightly as her skin seemed to ripple, transformation into her wolf form very close at the threat, as nothing more than mere self defense. The subtle rippling soon stopped and she let out a deep breath. "W-we mean no harm..." The lizard man had a point, they were not exactly invited. She took an unsteady step back. "I don't want any trouble..." More were coming close, spears similarly brandished, and a bright colored one hissed at them to leave. Ariana almost obliged until another voice broke through.

At the command the spears went to their sides and she let out a relieved sigh. A lizard man with black scales came out now, coming to the front. Although the leader had caused his warriors to put their spears down, it was obvious that he wasn't accepting them with open arms either. "None in particular, I guess...just...curious." And why wouldn't they be? It wasn't everyday that a group of lizard men came to the city in such a state. Traveling far and wide too, wherever could they have come from? Certainly not the forests, she had lived there for a while and never come across a group of people like this.

Her question seemed to cause an uproar of hissing, Ariana's eyes darting around timidly. It was true, there probably was very little she herself could do, though she wondered to herself what a j'nsssa was. "We have a hospital here that might be able to help...if you need it that is." And some clarity, so they were lead here? A place of shelter, a place where they could be safe. "This place should be very sturdy for you." At war...at war with what? "Where...um, where did you come from? And what were you at war with?" What types of beings could possibly give these lizard warriors a run for their money?

Well, this was quite the welcome! The man found himself and the young lady who had stood next to him suddenly at spear point, the lizards obviously not very pleased with their presence. He raised his hands slightly against his chest, palms outward in a submissive manner. "I apologize for intruding, usually when a caravan comes through there are merchants and goods." He said slowly, carefully choosing his words. "A mistake on my part, perhaps introductions should have been given first."

The man's eyes looked to the spears, taking in the primitive but impressive weapons while the rest of the patrols began to hiss and bristle defensively. However, he could not help but quirk an eyebrow at the green one who had called him a J'nsssa. An interesting name in their language to call an outsider, he figured, before looking to the chieftain who soon approached. A very impressive specimen among the rest with his dark scales and broad chest. So, he wished to know why they were so interested in their lives? The man opened his mouth slightly to speak, before glancing down upon hearing Ariana start talking.

"A mixture of curiosity and interest, this city gains new people of every walk and race by the week. Though it is new to hear you have come from far off instead of by a portal." He explained evenly, amber eyes on the chieftain. "The hospitals we have give excellent care, your people's wounds may be able to be healed within the week." The man kept his hands up, palms open. Though there was one thing that he still was curious about...

What in the hell was a gl'ugak?

Perhaps the only way to find out was to listen. The girl had asked plenty already, and they seemed to take kinder to her than to his inquiries.

Washu stepped back slightly when things nearly turned a bit hostile, but was content to observe for a bit more while a few of the others questioned things. Well, the lizard people certainly had come a long way, with their wagons and assorted tents looking worse for wear. Some of the lizards almost looked as worn as the wagons.

Still, if the group didn't think there could be any help found here, they would be sorely mistaken. The wisp of a girl and the tall male who kind of sounded familiar already recommended the hospital for those that might need it, but the scientist had an idea of her own. Washu moved to the front of the Portal City group, those observing might notice she was hovering a few inches off the ground. "Well, that would take care of your sick and injured, but if you need help defending your camp here, we can assist with that too."

She took a moment to show off her energy sword, but immediately put it away again so they wouldn't think it was a threat on her part.

Was it intentional to stay so far away, well not really but considering how these new folk reacted it seemed like a good play. No way Aya would have taken a spear being wiggled in her face so lightly, but the unknown man with Ariana seemed to take it all in stride though poor thing was all a stutter. It was rather odd how on edge these Lizard beings were well...not very friendly though surely they must be on a bad day? Drifting a little closer despite the hissing and very obvious 'go away' from a lovely colored lizard. But it came down to them not liking outsiders and while both Ariana and the man were asking away, the meeker of the two was more receipted. Perhaps because she wasn't as threatening?

The draculina kept quiet, watching as one who seemed to be to be the head honcho wanted to know where and why anyone was sticking their nose into their business and made sure to be clear that what they were told was all they needed to know. Well...It was better than spear jabbing, Aya supposed. But it was true what was said, that these refugees did have a place in this city to heal if they so desired after all and it was extended to them twice by the man and the woman with pink hair. But there was something that was nagging at the back of her mind now. Their land? She hadn't ever been aware of anything other than what made up the City to the mountains and to the oceans she had that was it. "Excuse me but...you said there was a war...how can that be possible? Where could this war be going on and not alerting the city about it?" Surely something as large as a war would bring forth the public eye unless it was far away from the public.

Such strange and submissive creatures... The mysterious visitors watched in silence while their temporary leader assessed this peculiar situation. "Hossspital...?" he repeated, unfamiliar with the harsh term. He soon deduced that a hospital was a powerful place of healing, thereby prompting a toothy grimace. "Our waysss are to be upheld," the warrior responded. "We have powerful ssshamansss that follow in the path of medicine... We do not wisssh to trade our traditionsss for your convenient magicsss." However...

"A word, ukli'n..." Warrior. The previous coral-scaled soldier from before stepped up, a clawed fist firmly thumped against his bare chest.

The black-scaled warrior simply tipped his head, accepting the request. Now permitted to speak openly, his fellow kin continued, "Ukli'n... Our numbersss are sssmall, our people fatigued and weak... Look around you; isss thisss city not asss our guide promisssed?" More of the lizardfolk considered these words, several of them nodding to one another. "We cannot continue like thisss, ukli'n... We need help. Our guide promisssed usss warriorsss and what have we before your blood-ssstained talonsss?" This was, indeed, true. The caravans' leader glanced back over to the strangers who were brave enough to approach, studying each one carefully for defining qualities.

The one with clay skin; he appeared tall and strong.

The two females; they smelled unlike other soft-skins.

And the one with pink hair; some had seen her descend from the skies without harm.

"Hmm... Yesss, your wordsss are wissse, s'lrkitt." Friend. It would be foolish to carry on proudly, like blind fools who drank nothing but honeyed words and golden lies. "We come from the ssswampsss, far away from your metal city..." the leader answered. "Very few of your kind travel our landsss, allowing usss to hide in the murk in peace." This was their preference, until now.

She-Who-Smells-Of-Death wrote:"Excuse me but...you said there was a war...how can that be possible? Where could this war be going on and not alerting the city about it?"
Several of the lizardfolk backed away from this woman, pupils narrowing into thin, black slices. One warrior in particular began to raise up his stone cleaver. "Away from usss, woman! You sssmell of - !"

"Enough!" The leader swiftly backhanded the offensive man aside, nearby warriors sharply retreating. No one dared to withdraw their weapon after that. "Do not insssult the people of thisss city," growled the leader. "It isss by circumssstance that we are their guestsss in their houssse... Hold our name in higher regard."

The humiliated warrior shakily rolled onto his knees and dipped his head low. "Forgive thisss one'sss insssolence..."

Things quickly died down once the leader waved a clawed hand aside, altercation avoided. He then returned his attention to the few handful who held enough courage in their hearts to remain standing. "Apologiesss, She-Of-Fiery-Sssilk... We are unaccussstomed to your ssstrange ssscent. To anssswer your quessstion, there are more landsss than just yoursss... There are many continentsss, rich with sssplendor and abundant with wealth. While many of your kind have not left thisss city'sss wallsss, many othersss have already essstablissshed kingdomsss in your absssence..." As for the war? The leader shook his head, allowing a crestfallen expression to consume him. "Our enemy isss mercilesss like the tidesss... The ssswamp was overrun before we could even prepare a fitting battle. What you sssee before you isss all that remainsss of our proud tribe. We are in dire ssstraitsss..."

"But thingsss are not asss fatal asss they ssseem..." the coral-scaled lizard warrior spoke up again. "We were lead to you, yesss... When the Ssson of Hatred dessscended from the heavensss and unleassshed madnesss upon the world, our tribe received a tassste of your generosssity. Our people then helped yoursss againssst the Wrathful God asss repayment. Ukli'n... They mussst sssee our guide. They may know..."

Another nod came from the leader, his mind seeing no reason to deny this wisdom. "Yesss... Fetch for our guide. Let them sssee..."

Fate was a strange, if not fickle, machination. A strand of destiny's yarn was weaved into another, the tapestry never the same twice nor identical for each soul it encompassed. His thread, as it so happened, had seen him return to Portal City - a metropolis once besieged by an ancient wickedness, Ra Moon. Heavy footfalls approached the fledgling group, the sound of forged metal singing against flesh.

"That will not be necessary, friend," a calm voice called out. Two golden eyes, gleaming like those of a cat's, peered out from the shade of a nearby caravan where a towering figure stood. "It is I who will come to you." And so he became, a giant of a man surging with unabashed muscle and strength. His clothing was sparse and his skin had been weathered against the cruel elements; nothing but a loincloth, rugged sandals, and a combatant's harness kissed his tanned skin. Although some may find his modest nature appalling, they would most likely not be fixated on something so mundane. They could not, for the man's most striking feature dealt not with meager clothing or naked distraction.

It was his head, shaped in the genuine likeness of a leopard.

"Hail," greeted the Leopard Warrior, recognizing familiar faces from the spring. He rested a heavy hand upon the hilt of his blade, eyes yet to blink. "I am the Leopard Warrior; this name will do," he said. An interesting assortment of characters... So far a man with skin blessed by dark ash, and three women from contrasting cultures. The others who had either spoken little or remained at bay had drawn little attention, except for one.

The Leopard Warrior's gaze locked with another's, his fixation unyielding. If there was something he wanted to say, his tongue remained chaste. Instead, the Leopard Warrior refocused his attention to the taller man and trio of women. "What the Ss'ruul say is true," he confirmed. "Their kind is at war and the casualties are staggering. You may not have heard of this grim news because your city is removed from the rest of the world's dealings." A shame, but to be expected when a world was as vast and bizarre as this one. "I led them here from the swamps in hopes of saving this tribe from the recent bloodshed in the marshes. If there is a safer place on Portal Breach in the given moment, then I know not of it."

Things were not as simple as they had originally seemed...

    Oh, how polite.

A bunch of refugees coming into the city and sticking spears in the faces of citizens who want to help. And just to think that Bun-Bun was a paranoid little bunny, himself. Well done.

Also, seeing as they were quite familiar to him, he didn’t take any guesses as to who brought them here. He had a feeling he knew already, yet kept his mouth shut as he slowly made an approach toward them, walking silently along the concrete. What’s this about a war he had been hearing? And how come he hadn’t heard about it? Don’t disasters usually happen here? Counting from a year ago onwards, Bun-Bun and others had been through Phazon Corruption, nobodies and Robot Corruption. The ones who’d been here longer may have more to share than Bun-Bun did, but during his stay here in Portal Breach Bun-Bun came to a conclusion; these people could beat up almost anyone or anything. Well, for anything that threatened their city, that is. But outside of the city? What would it have to do with them? Would they even help these people besides letting them take refuge?

So, they came here for warriors. Guess whoever their guide was wanted them to help these guys, afterall. Not much of a surprise. Hope they didn’t mind this marshmallow bunny, here. He’d be a brilliant and rather admirable warrior for his standing if he’d say so, himself. And they should know better than to insult people here. They’ve already done enough by threatening to slaughter them all with their spears and weapons. Bun-Bun would forgive the warrior for its crime for as long as one does not step out of line again.

    As for the war…

”So, exactly who are you guys at war with and what are we up against?” the marshmallow bunny inquired, finally stepping out from the shadows of silence before the group of lizard men as well as taking his stand among the others. If they were going to rid of those invaders, they had to know what they were going to be threatened with. They had to prepare, right?

Just then, Bun-Bun heard the sound of metal clanging. He knew someone was rising from the blend of the lizard people and just who may that person be? The Leopard Warrior, of course. CALLED IT!

The marshmallow bunny sensed the Leopard Warrior’s gaze upon him and scoffed the moment he turned away, arms crossed. Looks like he still wasn’t fond of Bun-Bun. Glad to say the feels were mutual. Either way, Bun-Bun’s question still stood. Exactly how bad is this enemy of theirs?
