    Summer Days

Post by Sonia on 7/24/2013, 10:42

    Time: 2:00 PM
    Date: 07.24.2013

Sonia had never been so happy to have an umbrella, what with the sporadic rain showers they had been getting all day. They came and went throughout the day the sun peeking out from behind the clouds every once in awhile before disappearing again. The lightning was rare but still present and it made her wary that they rain would continue throughout the day. Which would be very disappointing as it was her day off and she had actually hoped to enjoy it. Maybe actually step outside her apartment and do something to help get her mind off of some of the more depressing things that had recently happened.

She would have to visit the park sometime.

    And Swindle's shop.

But she wasn't sure she was quite ready for that, to face the park. And no doubt her presence to Jana and Livewire would just be smothering. It wasn't as if she was the most skilled in comforting others. She and the horde tended to be awkward in most situations. And the last thing either of those girls needed was her trying to awkwardly comfort either of them, especially if neither of them wanted the attention. So she was stuck, not wanting to stay inside but really no place else she felt comfortable going to. That left her to wander around the city, not the worst option..except for the fact that it kept raining.

    So it was raining. Joy.
Pat wasn't a very big fan of rain, you see. Tended to get everything wet and ruin his perm; you know, important stuff like that. Nah, he was a real 0G kinda guy. Space had its benefits, apart from being a lifeless vacuum in which no one can hear you scream. "Man, this place really went down a notch..." Now, Pat wasn't really a sociable man. Well, he could be but it wasn't his flavor of the month. Despite that, though, he did notice something fishy about Portal Breach. Less faces, disappearing locations, dour ambiance; you can see a lot when you live on the moon. Hey, whatever happened to that Lord Vader guy, anyway? Pat hadn't heard a peep ever since!

"Eh, whatever. Had a funny feelin' the guy was a flake," Pat grumbled. The weak don't last too longer here and he could admire that. Anyway... Pat sipped his cup of joe and remained seated, having nothing in particular to do. Okay, so that was a lie; he had a really great scheme planned but no use rushing it. Hatching a brilliant plan was like raising a child, minus the expensive college tuition.

He sighed and noticed his condensed breath, a leg shaking up and down. "Bored..."
What was an evil villain supposed to do around this joint, attack innocent young girls like the one walking over there?

Sonia looked over the wares of a local vendor while taking shelter under their umbrella. The roots she was currently examining were of a variety she had never seen before. Though according to the vendor they made a nice tea when boiled, good for stress. Tea, huh..Sonia had never really been a tea sort of person. She continued to look, examining the spices, dried fruit mixtures, seems everything at this stall was meant for tea making.

A faint rustling sound was made as one of the horde re-situated themselves, popping its head out of the back of the Queen's coat, its little legs gripping the back of her neck to steady itself. It's small antenna waved in the cool air, taking in the moisture and the doing a quick scan. Nothing out of the ordinary. Ah, wait. Its eye caught sight of a familiar face and sent the information back to the Queen. Sonia paused in her browsing momentarily as the images came to her eyes. That man, she had met him before, but it had been months ago. His name escaped her, but she could clearly remember his curiosity, how he had asked her questions about Portal Breach. He had seemed fairly new at the time, but still somewhat knowledgeable. At least knowledgeable enough to know that disasters happened every other month.

The horde had also had a little bit of fun in following him.

Still, good to see that not everyone had disappeared... The horde member returned to the inside of the Queens coat and Sonia moved on to the next shop. It was cramped inside and the smell made her nose crinkle, they sold all sorts of soaps, in all bizarre decorative shapes and scents. Sonia took her time and looked over a few lavender bars.

That really creepy feeling was back again...
Pat didn't betray his emotions; he just kept on sippin', looking around as if wanting something to do. Or destroy. Whichever keeps your star cruiser afloat. The dame wasn't the only one recognizing a familiar face. He recalled her distinctive willowy frame and gauntly eyes, cataloging her features for future use should he ever have use for them. Real stalkerish, amirite? Fear not - Pat was currently on another mission. Hey! That gave him a mighty fine idea.

The man suddenly got up and finished the rest of his coffee, throwing away his cup before heading into the same shop the young woman had. Sonia - Sonia was her name. And her shop made a mean tomato bisque and cheese sandwich combo. Oh, pardon him; tomato bisque and cheese sandwich combo.

In he went, also not particularly fond of all the smells that suddenly rushed his senses.
"...Whew, talk about an overload," he commented lowly, bringing a gloved hand to cover his nose. Did he need any soap? Was he a dirty boy? Pat resisted the urge to sniff himself in public, instead opting to browse this shop's wares. Oh look! This soap was shaped like some kinda... flower. Eh, he gave it a sniff and found it pleasing enough. "I guess I can pick up a handful or two." Ooh, and maybe some of those bath salts, too. Nana raised him to be a man of hygiene and well-kept appearances! But let's not be rude, shall we? After Pat made his selection, favoring the pink ones way over the purple ones, he tossed a few soaps repeatedly in a hand and came strutting over to Sonia.

"Fancy seeing you here," Pat greeted with a roguish grin.
Up to no good, as per usual.

Sonia lifted a bar of the lavender soap and sniffed, her nose wrinkled, the lavender just a little too strong for her liking. She set the bar down again and moved on, to another basket. "Cucumber and Oat", it said on the little sign. She investigated the bars, lifting one to smell it. It wasn't over powering as the lavender. The door opened behind her, and from the sleeve of her shirt one of the horde peeked. It was that man again, the horde alerted her.

She received the information, but did not turn her head. The other was allowed to enter a shop. She continued to browse the soaps, there were several bath salts that she noticed. But she wasn't sure if that was something that she could really get invested in. Baths were something that she enjoyed, but did not take very often.

The familiar face wrote:"Fancy seeing you here,"

Sonia turned away from the soaps and to the other. So he did recognize her then. Interesting that he would choose to strike up conversation given that they had not spoken much, something which he had commented on the last time they had met.

Is there something odd about me being here? Or was it simply her pale skin misleading you, had you thought that she never went outside?

Is there something odd about her being here, she says... Oh, he could think of plenty things being odd, but her placement here? Nah, not at all. Pat shook his head with a chuckle and stopped tossing a soap up and down, thinking better than to attract the attention of a shopkeeper or two. "People are free to go where they please," he replied, answering her question. "I ain't your keeper so my nose stays out of your business." Nothing really conspicuous about browsing a humble scent shop, was there? Although he did have to allow for a brief pause, Pat bringing a finger to lightly tap musing lips. "Hmm... But you probably don't want cucumber and oat for your bathing needs, just sayin'." And now why was that? Pat glanced around and smiled when he found exactly what he needed. "Bingo."

He picked up a bar of lemon salt soap; it had some herbs and the like, which made it really nice. "Here," Pat it offered to the green-eyed girl. "This outta do wonders for ya, trust me. It's an old trade secret." But why had he suggested this scent of bar in particular?

Is that right? She took the bar of soap that he offered to her and gave it a small sniff. Lemon. Thank you, she placed the lemon soap on top of the other soap bar in her hand. She would debate between which to buy later, she might even buy them both if she felt generous enough. One of the horde slipped their antenna out of her sleeve to waggle at the bars of soap. The antenna crinkled before quickly with-drawling, the horde did not share Sonia's taste in soaps it seemed.

So, what brings you out on in such weather?

What brings the likes of him out, huh?
Pat shrugged and found the reason not all that... exciting. "Boredom, mostly. And I guess a lil' curious about what happens around here," he admitted. Which really wasn't much, if he stopped to think about it. The moon had been equally, if not more so, devoid of anything spectacular. "It's always interestin' to take a walk around these parts and get a taste now and then." Pat wasn't about to spill his entire thought process to Miss Sonia, but a lil' bit of idle chitchat wouldn't harm no one. "And as for yourself?" the bearded man asked. "How do you keep yourself occupied on Portal Breach without driving yourself crazy from the lack of action and excitement?" Was there a trick? A secret? Was he missing any important detail on how to cope in such an environment?

For a disguised villain trying to make sense of this jumbled world, Pat was attempting to make do with the best he could.

Ah, so that was it then. Well, Sonia unfortunately could not share the other's sentiment. Being on Portal Breach for too long had made her appreciate the times when there was peace. She'd seen things. Way to many things for her to ever really be bored. But now he wanted to know her secret, how she kept from being as bored as he was.

Live on Portal Breach so long and the peace becomes something to look forward to. I don't really get bored with these quite moments. But of course this could be harder to deal with if you were new. You might find yourself a job to keep yourself occupied. That can work for some, if not then it's only a matter of time before something starts happening again. Horrific events were really the only constant in their lives.

Meh, peace. Pat didn't care about no peace.
"Yeah, I noticed them yearly disasters," he commented, showing that a recluse like him could still pay attention. When they typically hit, though, Pat usually went back to his base and watched the fireworks from a moderately safe distance. No use getting killed for some stupid heroics if he was a villain, right? Right! Then again... "I noticed you ain't got a lot of heroes," Pat remarked on a forlorn note. That was a real pity because a person like Pat, here, operated much better with a lil'... what's it called? Umph every now and then. Hence the boredom... "A job, huh?" Yeah, he supposed working around someone else's clock was a way to kill time, but who wants to do that? C'mon, it ain't fun being the goon when you could be the boss. No, finding some employment wasn't up Pat's tanker alley.

"And you don't know why these disasters keep happenin', I take it?"
You would think that veterans of this place had it figured out by now. What gives?

Sonia approached the register to pay for her items, the cashier, a rather tall individual was more than happy to ring them up for her. She paid for the two bars of soap and accepted her bag and receipt, thanking the cashier before turning back to Pat.

When we need to ban together we do. We've had people try and be heroes before, it never ended well. They either were told to stop by the public or the pressure became too much for them. And yes a job, surely there was something that the other was good at.

    As for the yearly disasters.

Glitches in the system, other portal deities picking fights, villains trying to prove something. Sonia shrugged, the reason depended on the event and no two events were alike.

His turn. Pat only had a few bars of soap because he was a clean boy. He paid without much fanfare and took his bag when prompted. Shopping didn't have to be difficult if you already knew what you wanted.

    Ladies.

"So your heroes don't really fit well here, huh?" Then how come the villains had seemingly no trouble? "If your so-called heroes are being told to quit or can't handle the pressure, then they're not very good heroes," Pat opined. It's like, really - what kind of lame wannabes couldn't handle being heroes in this crowd? So much for, he didn't know, morals and all that useless fluff. "Eh, I expected better." Moving away from that disappointment, Pat was vaguely curious about Portal Deities picking fights and glitches causing mayhem for everybody. "Oh right, I take it those Big Honchos up above don't exactly get along." Tch, gods - typical. Pat was going to make it his mission to avoid mingling with those Portal Deity fellows, because messing with quasi-omnipotent gods is totally not a sweet deal. "I guess, aside from all the yearly disasters, there isn't much going on." A shame.

That got Pat thinking, and the man was a notorious thinker.
"If some of you have been stuck in this joint for years, then how come you folks haven't really seem to have... adapted?" He felt it was an innocent question enough. True, too. If this world was destined to reset every time something bad happened, then why not just build a bunker and stay in it until everything blew over? Why even bother?

    Maybe Sonia had an answer.

Pat wrote:"So your heroes don't really fit well here, huh? If your so-called heroes are being told to quit or can't handle the pressure, then they're not very good heroes,"
Some had no choice but to quit, but you're right. Some of them weren't very good heroes. Some of it was the citizens fault, not many of them liked others snooping around in their private business, getting in their way. Heroes were sometimes pressured to get out of the game. Others though...well some used their positions to press their own moral beliefs onto others. Tried to dictate what was right and wrong based on their own experiences and not the laws that had actually been set down.

I'm not sure, the portal deities don't seem to interact much, so who can really tell what they feel for one another. Ah, but here Pat threw out a more complicated question, one that Sonia really had to chew on and take her time to supply a proper answer.

People all adjust differently, some prefer to keep out of what happens so they do. Others don't like to stand on the sidelines, sometimes what happens is too personal or hits too close to home. And just because the gamma is durable doesn't mean that it's unbreakable. After all, the phazon stuck around for weeks, the planet didn't just get rid of it on it's own. Some things just needed a little bit of help.

Pat was more used to crushing heroes; hearing that they resigned here wasn't something he was accustomed to. Was it just Portal Breach's charm on people or what? Having no competent heroes was really a major downer for a man like Pat... "Shame," he remarked with disappointment. "I had been lookin' forward to seeing the other half of the moral spectrum besides all the neutral folks here." And there were a LOT of neutrals on Portal Breach. As for the Portal Deities, well... Pat will honestly admit that he wasn't looking forward to seeing any of them real soon. They sounded to be like a crazy bunch.

So people liked to watch the world burn. He could dig it.
So people liked to put out the world's fires. He could dig that, too.
And then you had the lovely folks who cause the fires. He could totally dig that.

But what he couldn't dig was that Portal Breach was a society of watchers, firefighters, and firestarters all at the same time. Neutrals didn't want to do much; heroes were hardly around; and then your average villain types were either making stupid plans or barely opposed until the very last minute when the Gamma was on the verge of breaking. Did that sound healthy to you? With goods still in hand, Pat made his way for the shop's door and shook his head. "Just because this place can magically refresh and supposedly take care of itself doesn't mean it's gonna," he pointed out. "I bet if you let the planet default and have it scratch, everything will just refresh as if nothing had ever happened. This place is screwy like that, you know? So why bother even saving this place when you know it's just gonna be its old self within the next twenty-four hours?" Sure, someone could take it over but then someone else could just as easily take it back! Pat thought it all very pointless and time consuming. "If I were you, I'd just move off-world and find a more stable place to live. There are tons of them planets out there that no one seems interested in. You could totally start a city there and admire the solar winds without a care in the world."

People just had to, you know... think outside the Gamma sometimes. Maybe that would help ease a lot of people's suffering?

Yes, that was what she had said. There was no true guarantee that the gamma would always regenerate. After all, during the Phazon incident the damage had not been fixed, in fact, it had gotten worse. People had been stuck in their homes as the phazon ate at the city. The safe areas becoming smaller and smaller and food and water becoming scarcer.

I know, that was what I was trying to say. As for saving it, it's our home, why wouldn't we want to save it? The matter of the fact was, some of them had been on this planet for years. They had settled down, had families. Portal breach was a prison yes, but it was also a place that held many good memories for a lot of people.

Your concern is appreciated, but this is my home, for better or worse. She had already lost one once, she wasn't keen on leaving this one now that she had it.
