Some Good News and Some Bad News

Arro circled over the residential district, scanning the blocks of buildings below, until spotting the familiar roof so many strangers had gathered atop that one moonlit night. It was a relatively rustic but plain building, tall, but not tall enough to avoid looking out of place amid the more advanced structures of steel and glass that created the city around it.

The drai tightened his circle, zeroing in on the roof and pulling up into a hop-skotch landing. He swung toward the edge, leaned down the side of the building and dropped four floors onto the sidewalk. Cushioning his fall by pulling into a crouch. Arro rose up, rolled his shoulders, snapping a runaway vertebrae back into place and prowled his scaley feet up to the front door.

Modern edmrr buildings. His immortal foe. He peered through the window momentarily, spotting what looked like a reception area and a front desk. Then raised a claw up to lean on the door handle, and gently pushed it inwards. A bell rang overhead, or rather he bumped the bell with his head, then lowered his neck until he was able to squeeze the rest of himself and his tail in after him. Once he was inside it wasn't so bad, the ceiling was elevated enough and the room spacious enough that he could stand and turn with room to spare. It was always doors that were the main problem. In whatever style they were fashioned, they always managed to be about a meter too short.

No matter how easily he was able to maneuver and stretch within though, he still felt confined and out of place. Not necessarily because of the dimensions of the structure but the look of it. White painted walls, wooden floor, simple wooden furniture, wooden molding. Behind the reception desk another plain door with a square window, the glass sectioned off with rods like a cage. A colourful tasseled carpet lay on the floor adjacent to the main desk, in a alcove occupied by a rounded couch with green upholstery, and a fully occupied flat-boarded wooden bookcase. He passed a noticeboard on his way in, and opposite the desk and reading room stood more assembled wooden furniture, a cabinet, more similarly styled couches, a circular table ringed with high backed chairs, and some unknown manufacture of speculum display, non-holo. Or, he supposed people called them televisions here.

The architecture and furnishings may sound completely normal and quaint to any other ears. But Arro had never known anything other than two drastically different examples of architecture. Three if you counted the dwerg-drakine styles that constructed Agartha and various drakonik colonies. That being of rooms and streets, composed of tall slavered slabs of stone, spacious curving walkways and massive roughly hewn geometric shapes. There were no individual "buildings" in such cultures, but rather great connected intersections of lofty caves and rooms beneath the surface of the earth or within the walls of a canyon. As for strictly edmrr architecture, he had known only the two extremes. The agrarian wooden and stone villages, some standing alone, others built up from within the earth, covered in scrapped together solar panels and anivum siphons. In richer more established areas, bordering on the renaissance or roman styles in their high reaching stone and marblework. Then there were the complexes, survivors of the advanced age, tucked away like fortresses into the desert mountains or icey cliffs. Those were monuments to metal, the surviving seats of edmrr power, sleek, militaristic, and artistic in the curve of shapes as they meshed steel with the natural environment. Their landing docks sticking out into the sky like exposed ribs. The insides were always cold, like the gutted belly of a dead giant, filled with scavengers of a different kind. Calculating politicians and predatory corporations. Their insides too were vast, high-rise structures. Not out of necessity but because they could afford to waste the space. Though not all the examples listed were large and spacious, the time of his life that he spent among the rural villages was when he was very young, and everything appeared gigantic to him anyway.

Reviewing all this in his mind, it was no wonder this relatively plain modern building seemed the most novel and unusual thing he'd ever been in. He had never experienced the 20th-21st century middle ground.

Arro gazed around the room, sniffing at corners and dust before leering his head over the counter.

"Hello? Is anyone here? I'm looking for Jherrek Akir."

Eight in the morning found Link returning from a meeting with his cleaning staff and casting fleeting glances at the restaurant area as he walked by. It was two hours after breakfast and already he was wondering what was for lunch, whether he should get himself a snack or perhaps make himself a pot of tea in his office.

He returned to his office just in time to hear some noises and a voice in the lobby. "Huh," hummed the innkeeper, setting down his clipboard and meeting notes on his desk before reaching for the door that separated his work area from the reception.

He had seen many things when he opened that office door. Brightly coloured talking ponies, candy bunny, loud overlords with hordes of penguin minions, giant robots etc. But it was the first time ever that he opened the door to see a dragon sitting in his lobby. Link's jaw dropped opened for a grand three seconds before he remembered how rude it was to stare and he closed his mouth the same time recognition dawned to him. The dragon... was... what was his name again? Arrow, yes? (Link vaguely wondered if there was that W at the end of his name though) How on earth did he get through the door? It must have taken some careful twisting and positioning.

He waved, took a seat on the desk and his mind rewinded back to the enquiry. Looking for Jherrek? He held up one finger for the universal 'one moment, please' motion the reached for the phone and dialled the extension number for the Akir brothers' room. With a press of a button, the phone was placed on loud speaker for both the dragon to hear and respond. Telephones: mute boys' worst nemesis. One ring....two rings... thre rings...

Jherrek watches as the sun rises. His hand on the tome of runes he has currently finished seventeen times. The other books haven't had nearly this much attention since his brother has gone missing. This volume had runes of binding, protection, and summoning. Something that his brother sorely needed. This Niddhog ordeal was already out of hand... Jherrek fears for the worst. Niddhog might overtake his brother soon. Someday, maybe not now, but soon his brother might die before they come up with a solution to his predicament.

He slowly stands and turns to the empty and clean bed that is Uriel's. The man hasn't slept there this entire time. It's still in the same exact position and made perfectly. Jherrek smiles only slightly and shakes his head, running his hand over his face and rubbing his tired eyes. His arms fall to his bare chest, small runework along his body shimmers as he does so.

Suddenly and without warning, he turns to the wooden chair he's been using and holds out his hand, Auriella appears and slices the chair in half. The timber falls to the ground in a heap and he wrings his knuckles on her hilt, the blade singing out a sorrowful tone. He breathes heavily for a moment until the phone rings.

He whips around and points his sword at the blinking machine.

Oh. A phone. They have one of those.

He sheathes his sword, it disappearing from sight, and picks up the receiver. Slowly putting it up to his ear, he tiredly speaks, as if one hadn't slept in months.

    "Yes."

Arro smiled lightly as the young boy appeared. He hadn't forgotten Links name. He made a point of memorizing the moniker of every person he met. Envisioning their features and repeating the identifying sound over and over again until it stuck. He repeated the process for those of people he'd fought with, or against. He had actually intended to visit Link sooner, but it was difficult crossing the long distance from his home weyrm without greater purpose than catching up. And in this case Uriel was that greater purpose. Talking with Link would have to wait. Not just for Jherrek's sake however, as it seemed Link's faerie translators hadn't entered the room with him.

The drai leaned his shoulder against the counter and nodded at Link's signal. The boy brought up an old looking phone, dialed a number and waited as a strange trilling tone rang out. Once, twice, three times...

A hoarse "Yes" creaked out from an overhead loudspeaker. Arro was keen enough to catch the timber of Jherrek's voice over the interference. Despite having only met the man a few scant times before. Memorization techniques could be applied to voices as well as names, appearances and scents.

"Jherrek, this is Arro. You'll want to come downstairs. I have news of Uriel," Arro spoke as clearly as he could through the speaker. These old phones tended to butcher his words. Overhead, his filtered voice sounded overtly rougher than in person. Didn't like his subharmonics it would seem.

The subject of his visit was too delicate to be discussed impersonally over a comm link. He was certain Jherrek would want to leave to visit his brother anyway as soon as Arro gave him the news.

Jherrek, what are you doing randomly destroying furniture in your room? Link will replace it once if it was an accident but a clean cut suggest otherwise. Let’s hope you can do without an extra chair in the room then.

Link raised an eyebrow at the tired voice that came out of the phone then glanced at the clock. Well, it is early so it was understandable for the man to be tired but Link would think he knew his tenants well enough to have a vague idea who was a morning person and who wasn’t. Uriel was definitely a morning person.....and an afternoon, evening, early morning, dawn - actually, Link was fairly sure Uriel doesn’t sleep. And since Jherrek had yet to ask for a room of his own even just to get some shut eye, Link would be inclined to believe that the elder Akir didn’t sleep either.

At the dragon’s request for Jherrek to come downstairs and the words ‘news of Uriel’, Link blinked then frown. News of Uriel. What do you mean news? Was he missing? Did something happen? Should he know about this?

The innkeeper looked around the lobby and at the dragon. He hummed a ‘hmm’. Whilst the lobby was hardly the most private place in the entire inn, it could serve the dragon well at this point in time if he and Jherrek wanted a bit of privacy for their discussion. It was quiet and should remain relatively empty as those who work early shifts would have left and those who don’t are either still in bed or helping themselves to breakfast.

Link grabbed his digiglass and with a few swipes of his fingertips, wrote a quick message. “Should I leave the room?”

No need Link, Jherrek fixes what he breaks in anger. It really normally isn't his thing, but when he's stuck in a situation, anger seems to be the correct response.

He holds the phone at his ear for a moment as he considers Arro and the dragon's words. He almost chuckles. Befitting that a dragon tell him about his brother's current condition or whereabouts. He sighs and simply hangs up. He doesn't want to waste time, so coming off as rude means little to him. He quickly dons his clothing and jacket, grabbing his small tome of runes, which is now bursting with more knowledge, and opens his window.

Jumping from it, he opens his wings and tucks them in almost immediately, making a quick swoop downward, and then off to the side as he banks hard, narrowly making it through the slim alleyway and landing in a dash toward the Inn's doors. He opens them quickly and stands up straight, his hair wild from the wind and not tying it back.

"What news of Uriel, Arrogath?" He blinks once, his stoic mask hiding the urgency in his demeanor, but his quick words slightly betray is cool behavior.

He straightens his jacket and takes in what the dragon's state is. What his scales look like compared to normal, what his body is betraying even in this tight situation, and what the dragon's eyes may convey.

Everything seems urgent... And is that ash?

His wings flick and twitch with apprehension as he considers almost everything wrong that could have happened. His brother could be dead right now. That would explain the red rune flashing. He flexes his hands and wrings his gloves as he checks the rune again. Still flashing red. He's never had this happen before.

His halo flickers as the stress continues to take its toll on him.

"Can you take me to him?"

He ruffles his wings and tailfeathers a bit as he waits, not so patiently, for Arro to continue.

He takes a small amount of time to nod in thanks to Arro, and then to Link. He's not sure why, but he does.

Arro's eyes drifted toward the ceiling as he spoke. A pregnant pause developed as Jherrek took in what he'd said. The click of the call disconnecting broke the silence, soon followed by the fluttering of feathered wings outside. He was on his way.

The drai leaned away from the desk, halfheartedly licking a bit of ash from his shoulder. Across the counter, Link had grabbed a tablet device and hastily scribbled something for him to read.

    “Should I leave the room?”

Arro regarded the device for a moment before shaking his head. "Shouldn't be necessary."

It was up to Jherrek of course but Arro doubted the angel would care, if for nothing else other than the news was urgent, and waiting for Link to step out meant that many more seconds until Arro could get to the bottom of his business here. Secondly, this was Link's territory, it would inappropriate for Arro to tell him what to do in his own home. Perhaps that wasn't as much of a slight in edm culture, but to assert one's power that way was practically taboo for drai. Unless it was your purpose to initiate a mental altercation.

At that moment, the door swung open, and Jherrek marched in with windblown hair and a face worn by tempered anxiety. He approached them, straightening his jacket, assembling an armour of calm.

    "What news of Uriel, Arrogath?"

"I found him burning down Kindle forest, under the influence of Nithokkr. Some of the Cibertronians, Xiao, Randall and I managed to subdue him until Uriel could seal Nithokkr away again. He collapsed afterwards, and last I saw Livewire and Xiao were taking him to the Hospital. As a precaution mostly, he seemed healthy, just... exhausted." Arro offered up a relieved shrug, ending on a slow release of breath that he hadn't realized he'd been holding in.

"Can you take me to him?"

Arro nodded, "I Can. Are you ready to go now?"

Hum, so he could stay? Link tilted his head slightly to the left in curiosity. Looking the dragon up and down properly for the first time since he came into the inn. What was that covering Arro's scales? Dust? No, ash, right? ASH? Er... well he does breathe fire if Link remembered correctly so...he was burning something? And he's here to talk about Uriel? Should he even try to put two and two together?

Rather than be presumptuous, Link nodded slowly and replaced the receiver on the telephone. He cleared his digiglass of writing as the two waited for Jherrek to appear. Of course, Jherrek had to choose the unorthodox way of flying down instead of taking the stairs - a choice Link completely understood since he himself had descended the walls of the inn via grappling hook several times in the past.

His tenant came in and Link for the N-th time really wondered if Uriel and Jherrek ever sleep at all. Link waved and tried not to feel out of place as the two shared the 'news'.

What...? Link blinked then his eyes widened. Burning down Kindle Forest? Uriel? Under the influence of...who? What? HUH?! The boy hero was slightly relieved to hear that he was at least subdued and by people who whilst Link didn't know very well, he recognised as not the bad sort.

He nodded back to Jherrek as they suggested they'll take their leave. Link waved his hands at them, a motion that under other circumstances might appear as if he's shooing them off but here, it was to imply for them to hurry, go now, don't worry about anything else.

The only reason he wasn't moving right now is courtesy. Otherwise as soon as he heard the location of his brother, he would have swept the lobby with ethereal feathers and darted. However, his cool demeanor demands his outward to be calm, cool, and collected. A bit of anxiety passes his facial features before he takes a sharp breath in at the mention of Niddhogg. But otherwise he takes on a stance of objectivity and flicks his wings back.

Pulling out the leather cord from his pocket and wrapping his long hair in a pony tail, he turns toward the door and rushedly opens it, turning to make sure the Drai was coming. He nods to Link with a hurried respectful kind of half-bow for putting up with him, a sincere look of apologies. Something rare coming from the silverhaired Syn'ya.

He quickly leaps out of the doorway and takes to the sky, his large wings flaring out and encompassing him as he flaps hard to find a thermal and ride it up.

And now he waits yet again, due to courtesy.

"You lead, Arrogath." He says with a bit of urgency. He's still yet to map out the whole of Portal City and his leading rune for Uriel is definitely useless.

Arro nodded briskly, taking in the reserved urgency hidden beneath Jherrek's actions. He swept past the counter, "Let's go."
He glanced back at Link, catching a ghost of confusion sweep over the boy's face. But the Innkeeper merely waved them off. Comprehending the situation, if not the events that led to it, and urged them onward.

Jherrek bound his hair and rushed out the door, pausing only to be sure Arro was on his heels. The winged human flung himself above the street, flapping vigorously to get aloft.

"See you around, Link" Arro said, before following Jherrek out the door.

He extricated himself from the building, then scaled the Inn -potentially surprising anyone who happened to be at their window- and leaped into the sky from the rooftop. With a few circular sweeps he was soaring high and leading the angel into the city depths.

((I'm not sure if Livewire or anyone else has made a Hospital post yet, you (jherrek/Uriel) may want to pm them to check on that.))
