Link could not help but grin as Wheaton noted that any friend of his was a friend of theirs. He knew that he had only met Chell a little earlier, but to see that the two bakers were already referring to her as his friend did make him happy. Given the way that he had heard that she was slowly getting better and better acquainted with Impa, Sheik, and Link, the younger boy did already hope that he too could become a friend of hers. More than that, from what he had learned about her and had got to see so far in person, he thought she was really nice… sure, she was withdrawn, but that was just her personality… but what counted far more than that was that indescribable feeling he got when he had made a new connection with a potential friend. He had experienced it in Hyrule, Termina, and now on the Breach, and whether it was someone that he already had a connection to like the older Link or Zelda, or with someone from another world entirely, he definitely liked it.

Still glad to see just how much Chell had liked the brioche, Link's grin broadened at Wheaton's response to his request. "Thank you," said Link, nodding to both of the bakers. At catching Chell's pause before her written response to Pita's question, Link's expression soon softened… if that wasn't proof that she was still new to the Breach, then nothing was. The Hero of Time remembered when he had first arrived… he had had to take a few jobs to build up some more money, or at least add on to the credits that he had traded most of his rupees for. It hadn't been a great feeling, but being able to stay at the inn had helped him out with getting set. Maybe the former test subject could do some temporary jobs to earn some money as well?

Tatl chimed a little to catch Link's attention again, just in time for him to glance over and see that Pita had moved to hand him two packages full of cookies. "Ah!" Blinking a bit in surprise as he took the sweets, he noticed that they seemed to be a bit heavier than a normal dozen… or even a baker's dozen… … … … had they…

Link simply smiled as he caught the wink from Pita, unable to laugh a little as he moved to pull out the credits he needed for today's order. He loved the food at the inn, but he was still immensely glad that Wheaton and Pita had arrived and opened up a nearby bakery!

Wheaton nodded to the young boy at his thanks, right before moving to carefully slice the bread into the medium-thick slices he knew that their fellow Hyrulean friends preferred. He focused on that task, making sure to get the miches prepared just right whilst his wife tended to fetching the cookies for him. She had thankfully caught his glance that had meant for her to not just give Link the usual baker's dozen, but instead the yet to be patented Wheaton dozen…

Simply because thirteen was an odd number.

As Pita prepared the cookies for Link, she soon moved to hand the bags to the boy with a smile and a wink, adding, "Here you go, Link." Once he had handed over the perfect change for the baked goods, she nodded to him, soon glancing over her shoulder to check on her husband's progress before turning back to Chell. Reading the newly presented text, her brow creased a bit at catching the last line. Oh dear, she really was new to the Breach… that alone was a shame, but at least she seemed to have already fallen into some good company. Hopefully, she would be able to adjust without too much trouble… and hopefully the surprise that she and Wheaton had set for a certain young hero would help in that even if only slightly.

"That's all right," said Pita, nodding to Chell. Smiling a little more to her, she soon gestured to the display case closed to her, stating, "I understand. Before you go though… would you like to sample anything else? We did have a few extra cookies today."

Call it a baker's sense or Hylian intuition, either way, Pita did hope that she was reading Link's companion right, and that she would like the offer whether she actually accepted it or not.

Chell bit her lip slightly as Pita read her text, glancing away for a moment in a slight display of uncertainty. She certainly wasn't ashamed by her lack of funds--after all, she had sort of been dragged into this place against her will, and her old life hadn't exactly lent much in the way of money either--but it did show off her "new resident" status like nothing else. Granted, there didn't seem to be any more standard of normal in this world than there had been in her own, and she didn't seem to stand out that much, but still, she couldn't help but feel a little uncomfortable giving herself away like that. To two complete strangers, none the less. Still... no matter how confusing this place served to be, she would figure out a way to earn money somehow. She would go after it with the same perseverance she attacked most things in her life, and somehow, she would find a way to work it out--she was sure of it. Squaring her jaw, she promptly righted herself and met Pita's eyes again, attempting to smooth over whatever loss of confidence she had experienced as quickly as possible.

In what seemed to be true Hyrulean fashion though, the baker responded kindly, easing Chell's own tensions a little. When asked if she wanted to try another sample, the former test subject seemed to immediately perk up, eyes roaming over the packages full of cookies Pita had just handed over to Link. She was... very tempted, god help her, but was it really fair to accept more like that? Was there some sort of unspoken social code she'd be breaking by doing so? Chewing her lip again, she spared a glance towards Link, wondering what he thought. From what her gut was telling her, she didn't think any harm would be done, but then again, she wasn't very sure how clearcut her ingrained social knowledge was in the first place--much less where she had learned it from. Besides, this was a new place... who knew how things really operated here. Given her own reclusive ways, she couldn't say she had exactly done much research.

    Then again...

Oh, what the hell. They did say they had extras. Coinciding defeat, Chell let out a tiny sigh, tearing her eyes away from the cookies long enough to write down a response. If she was really doing something that unreasonably offensive, then she could always just avoid this place for the next few months or so--though hopefully it wouldn't come to that. Finally finishing up, she presented her notepad to them, face somehow looking both apprehensive and expectant. "Maybe just one sample of the cookies. If that's alright."

Link could not help but grin as he caught the very subtle added weight in the package of cookies, and once he handed the proper credits over to Pita, he nodded strongly to her, stating, "Thank you!"

Still chuckling just a bit as he turned back to Chell, the Hero of Time soon smiled a bit sheepishly as she seemed to be thinking over the couples' offer for more samples of their baked goods. Wheaton and Pita could only give out so many samples a day, but they were still very generous with what they were able to offer to people, and even though the former test subject still seemed to be adjusting to this world, Link hoped that the kind gesture of the bakers might help her adapt just a bit more in this regard.

He didn't really know what kind of world Chell had come from… in fact, save Zelda mentioning that she had called her world a "bad place," only Impa had really been able to glean any clues from where the former test subject had been brought. Most of those were pretty general though, and the Sheikah had kept pretty much all of that to herself. After all, as Impa had said, some people don't necessarily want to share their past… and as much as Link sympathized with Chell if that was in fact the case, then he just hoped that the Breach would help her make a fresh start.

As long as the Hyruleans were there, both at the inn and the bakery, then he had a strong feeling that they would do their best to help ensure that.

Link smiled at Chell's written note to Pita, just before Tatl chimed, "If they offer, it's always all right."

"Of course that's all right!" Wheaton exclaimed, smiling broadly to Chell as he nodded in response to her latest written message. "Take a couple if you like, and do be sure to come visit us again in the future, all right? And I mean that whether it's on your own or with any of your young friends."

The Hyruleans at the inn had definitely become some of their most regular customers over the past few months, and Wheaton and Pita could not have been more delighted. They liked all of their customers, especially their regulars, but it was not because of the frequency of their visits… no, it was simply because of who they were. They were the patrons that had become acquaintances and then some, and such relations were always what helped a business boom. Just like two Kinstones uniting to signal good luck in the future, so did two paths crossed in the warm center of a bakery.

"Here you go," noted Pita, nodding to the former test subject as she prepared and handed two freshly baked chocolate chip cookies to her. "Like Wheaton said just enjoy them, and do be sure to come visit us soon."

Hearing Tatl's chime, Chell allowed herself to relax a little, though only a little. Truthfully, deep down she knew she wasn't really doing anything wrong, but when in a new world, you could never be sure. Hell, even back in her own world she might not have been sure, provided her seemingly endless wandering had caused her to stumble upon another living person. She had a few ingrained social instincts, sure, (rusty as they may be) but where they had come from and who taught them to her continued to remain a mystery.

She honestly preferred to keep it that way.

In any case, Tatl was right--they had offered, and she didn't think she'd be eating them out of house and home just by trying one more sample. Catching Wheaton's exclamation, her eyes softened a bit, rolling over to Link for a moment before she returned the baker's offer with a nod. While she wasn't sure if she felt comfortable going so far as to call anyone she'd met here a "friend" just yet, it was definitely nice to know that it didn't come off that way to others... that would make her life much easier. And, despite her hesitance, she definitely wouldn't be unopposed to returning with the boy sometime in the future. After all, it wasn't every day someone was friendly enough to invite you to their favorite bakery after you wrongfully stared them down in a hallway.

Turning her attention back to the bakers, Chell's mouth fell open slightly in surprise when she was offered two extremely appetizing looking cookies by Pita, staring at them with no small amount of hesitance. She had been expecting a piece, maybe half of a cookie if she was lucky, but two full ones? Talk about hitting the jackpot. Still looking slightly awed, the woman accepted the cookies, giving the pair the most grateful smile she was capable of before reaching for her notepad. "Thanks for everything... you've both been really kind. I will definitely be coming back one day."

Link smiled a little more to Chell as she glanced over to him at the bakers' remark. He knew that he had only just met the former test subject, but as with so many people that he had met here as well as across both of his own quests in Hyrule and Termina, he did hope that the two of them could become friends. She had been nice and curious enough to follow him out to the bakery after all… that combined with the sense he was getting from her, she just seemed like someone who could be a really good friend.

Hero's instinct or not, he was pretty sure it was right.

Outright grinning as Pita handed two freshly backed cookies to Chell, he nodded along with her presented text to them, glancing to the couple before calling, "You two have a great day. See you next time!"

"Take care, Link. And once again, it was very nice to meet you Chell."
"We'll see you both next time!"

WIth a happy wave to both Wheaton and Pita, Link moved for the door, making sure to hold it open long enough for his companion to exit the bakery as well. As the young hero began to walk back to the inn with his baked goods in tow, he glanced back to Tatl bobbing over his left shoulder before looking up to the former test subject, chuckling just a bit before noting, "Their cookies really are some of the best I've ever had… especially their chocolate chip ones."

Link paused for a few moments, right before adding, "I'm glad you liked the bakery. I'm sure you've already heard this from Impa, Link, and Sheik, but if you ever need a hand with anything, do be sure to let me know. And if you'd ever like any company in walking to the bakery… any of us is always happy to go."

The Hero of Time had a very strong feeling that the former test subject would soon be comfortable making the trek out that way on her own, but even so, he felt it couldn't hurt to ask. After all, she had been here a few weeks, but it was still a strange, new world to have to adapt to… and friends or not, having some allies to help look out for you never hurt. He knew that far too well many times over now, and no matter the world, he was always set to return that.

Re: A Link to the Test

Post by Chell on Mon Oct 07, 2013 6:45 pm

With the smile still on her face, Chell waved her goodbyes to the two bakers, before turning and following Link out of the building. She was a little reluctant to leave, especially with how warm everything seemed and how good it all smelled, but there was no sense in staying any longer than was necessary. There would be more chances to visit in the future, she reasoned, and if anything, this gave her more of an incentive to start pursuing her own money at some point. She would force herself to remain practical, of course, as she refused to let herself be distracted by non-essentials at the moment, but at the same time... all motivation was good motivation, once you got right down to it.  What was the harm?

With that thought tucked away in her mind for later, the woman blinked as she stepped back into the afternoon sunlight, pausing to give Link a nod of thanks before almost experimentally nibbling at her first cookie. Almost immediately, her eyes popped open, and she had to quite sternly remind herself not to down the whole thing in one bite. Her table manners had gotten better over time, with practice helping along with her not being on the edge of starvation anymore, and she wasn't about to let that end now. Still... it was harder than it looked, because these were quite possibly the best cookies she'd ever had. Making a quiet noise of contentment, the former test subject let her eyes fall shut, forcing herself to savor the flavor. Did anything get better than this?

Tossing a glance at Link over her shoulder, Chell nodded steadily as the boy spoke up, finding herself inclined to agree. Truthfully, when she really thought about it, she was sort of baffled at how the day had wound up--first she had stared him down in the lobby for what turned out to be no good reason, and then before she knew it, he was taking her on a very friendly trip down to his favorite bakery, and now she was trying incredibly hard not to devour the free food she had been bestowed, as encouraged by him. It was quite a conundrum to work out why, especially since she would have never invited her along if she were him. Lost in thought, she listened carefully as he went on to offer her help in anything if she needed it, including another trip to the bakery, and felt something within her tighten.

She had been treated with more kindness here than she could have ever possibly imagined, so much so that the more jaded part of her felt a flare of suspicion anytime someone did anything for her, much less gave her a kind word. It would probably continue to be there for a long time, she reasoned, but if things went on like this... maybe even that would go away, eventually. Maybe she really could be happy, not just safe.

Swallowing the last of her cookie, the woman reached for her notepad, scribbling down another message as they made their way back to the inn. "It was good. I can't say this was something I had expected to do today, but it was nice. This was nice." Pausing, she spared one last glance a the boy and his fairy before adding on one more note, averting her eyes to hide the softer expression they now held. "And thank you... I think I'd like that."

    She wasn't lying.
