    Chell's Crossbow Training

Post by Impa on Tue Nov 20, 2012 12:54 pm

    Date: August 28, 2012
    Time: 3:00pm

The excellent weather that Impa and Zelda had been able to enjoy earlier whilst they had gone out to check on the status of things was still very present as the two of them and Chell made their way into the Samba Heartlands. It was a perfect temperature, partly cloudy, and there was just enough of a breeze to help the air feel even more clear and lively after the heaviness that it had held the past month during the recent ominous threat. They could have scarcely asked for a better day to be outside, and they had a particularly perfect one for the training that they had set.

As the three made their way across the rolling hills, Impa took a deep breath of the fresh air, thinking that this day of getting out and being active was going to be especially beneficial for her and Zelda as well as Chell. It was a relief to see things back to normal, and even more than that, it was great to have something to occupy themselves with. The Sheikah had more or less adapted back to normal after the events of the Phazon crisis, but even with as unshakeable as she was, she was not immune to the effects it had had on the Breach. The world had recovered, but other scars were still healing... at least everything was on the right track again.

Impa led the way towards one of the random, scattered trees that dotted the grasslands, thinking that this might be the perfect place to start with some of Chell's training. Once they got about 30 feet away from it, the Sheikah motioned for Chell and Zelda to stay where they were right before she moved to walk towards the tree. She sized it up for a moment, right before she held up her right fist, charging up a bit of white magic in it. Gently placing her palm on the tree at about chest-height, Impa soon caused a simple target to appear drawn on the tree. It was series of three white-outlined concentric circles... something that could wash of very easily, but at the same time, something that would work very well for helping Chell get some good target practice whether any monsters decided to show up or not.

Nodding in approval at her work, Impa turned back to her friend and charge, smiling to them as she walked back tor rejoin them. "There we go... does that look like a good target to start practicing on, Chell?"

The day was beautiful. Outside of her first, real emergence into the surface world, Chell wasn't sure she had ever seen a more perfect day. Sure, this was mainly because she had spent a good part of the month confined to The Inn, but that didn't change the fact that the air was now clear for the first time in a very long time - the outside world was once again safe, and that alone was a good enough boost for her mood. She followed her friends as they traversed across the grassy hills of the Heartlands, taking in a deep breath as she admired her surroundings. The open fields weren't quite the same as the mountain trails she had come to enjoy so much, but they were almost endlessly wide and lush, and like Impa, she could think of no better place to train today.

The former test subject came to a stop, as directed, and watched as Impa approached a lone tree she'd apparently spotted, exchanging a puzzled glance with Sheik. Not a moment later, she watched with a pair of raised brows as the Sheikah's palm emitted some sort of white light, which was then followed by a target appearing on the tree seemingly out of nowhere. She blinked. Well, that was certainly one way of setting up a target. Although she had known them both for a good few months now, seeing her friend's magic in action was not something she really witnessed often. It was so easy to forget, sometimes, that not only were they not human like she was, but the universe they had come from was the complete opposite of hers in very many ways. There, things like magic actually existed, and she was willing to bet that science wasn't exactly something that they practiced or observed there, which would honestly suit her just fine. All the same, although she was more accepting of their abilities now than she had been initially, it was still kind of a shock to see it them actually used, and in such a nonchalant fashion at that.

Well, it was about as perfect of a target as you could get for aiming practice. Chell gave her friend an impressed nod when she returned to their little group and smiled, giving her a thumbs up in answer to her question. Yes, this would do nicely, provided none of the monsters Sheik had casually mentioned earlier actually showed up. Exhaling, the woman pulled the crossbow from it's resting place on her shoulder and held it like she had back at The Inn, taking a couple of steps forward. She fell into position easily and held up the weapon, staring as intently at the center of the target as she would have one of the many flat, white portable surfaces back in Aperture. Once she felt like she had gotten it, she looked back towards her friends and gestured towards the crossbow in her hands with her head, asking them in the most convenient way that she could if she was holding it right.

Post by Zelda/Sheik on Sun Nov 25, 2012 1:20 pm

Now THIS was more than worth setting out a second time for! Today was even more perfect than the disguised princess remembered from earlier! As the three of them moved to cross the Grasslands and make their way closer to a general area that Impa had grown to favor with regards to various training exercises, Sheik couldn't help but smile at Chell's very apparent enthusiasm for being out and about. She couldn't blame the former test subject of course, not only was it a gorgeous day, it was the first time she had really been outside in very nearly a month... regardless, at least she seemed to be enjoying the new scenery, and hopefully they would be able to have a good training session as well as outing together.

Once Impa found the right spot, Sheik perked up slightly as she focused on the tree ahead of them. It was very similar to one of the trees that her guardian had used to help her practice her archery skills, and as such, the disguised princess could tell that it would be perfect for Chell's first round of practice with her new crossbow.

Nodding to Impa as she indicated for both herself and Chell to stay where they were, Sheik met her friend's puzzled glance with a smile and another nod. She had a feeling what Impa was up to now, and sure enough, she soon saw the white aura that she had grown more and more familar with. Watching as the Sheikah moved to make a target appear on the base of the tree, the disguised princess turned back to Chell, inwardly hoping that this display of magic hadn't confused her too much. Their friend had got more and more used to magic even though they didn't use it that often around her, but Sheik knew very well that it was still pretty strange and foreign to the former test subject.

Maybe around her own training with the weapons, they could show her some of their abilities this afternoon... if she wanted to see any of their magic of course, so she wouldn't be stunned by it in the future. That offer could be made later, though. Right now, Sheik was just looking forward to seeing Chell in action and hopefully having fun with her new weapons!

Inwardly glad that Chell seemed to like the spell that Impa had cast as well as the new target, Sheik watched as the woman moved to ready her crossbow, checking her position and holding it before turning to the two of them, seeming to want to check that she was holding the weapon right. With a quick glance to Impa and read of the nod from her, Sheik stepped towards Chell, smiling to her as she said, "Just about."

Motioning to Chell's left leg, Sheik stated, "You're right-handed, so just remember to keep your left leg forward when you're not in motion. It will help steady your stance for a stronger, more focused attack."

Impa's smile broadened slightly at Chell's impressed nod and thumbs up, right before she nodded in return to her friend. "Excellent. Once you're ready, just take a stance a bit closer to it, and the target practice can begin."

The Sheikah watched as Chell moved to ready the crossbow in her hands, right before taking a couple of steps forward and assuming the position that she had exercised for a little while back at the Stock Pot Inn. Her stance and positioning were pretty decent, but if she were to truly master the crossbow, there were some very slight adjustments to be made. Judging from the way that she had steadied herself, the former test subject was proving now more than ever that she was used to ranged combat. The very subtle flex in her arm muscles added to that evidence, and Impa nodded very slightly as she studied her friend's stance.

A moment later, and Chell glanced back to them, indicating the crossbow as though to ask if she was holding it correctly. Her inquiry made some of what Impa saw easier to convey, and with a quick look, slight smile, and steady nod to Sheik, the Sage of Shadow watched as her charge moved to help their friend shift her footing. Moving her stance to a more natural one would not only enable her to make better shots, it would help her absorb any potential kickback from the weapon and remain steady for shooting. Even when she would inevitably find herself having to use the crossbow whilst in motion, trying to make this natural stance her standard one would certainly prove to be beyond useful.

Slight pride was evident in Impa's eyes as Sheik stepped forward to offer one piece of advice to their friend. As an accomplished archer, the disguised princess was a very good one to point that out, and although the Sheikah had been the one to teach her the ways of the bow, she was still very proud to see what her younger eyes had caught so soon in an attempt to help their friend.

Impa nodded at Sheik's words, right before spotting just one more slight adjustment to be made. She stepped around to Chell's left side so that she was opposite Sheik, right before motioning to the main body of the crossbow. "You've got the grip right, but if you shift your left hand forward a little, you'll keep the weight of the crossbow more evenly distributed."

The Sheikah waited for the former test subject to make sure her stance was right and that she had shifted her left hand a bit, right before nodding once more to indicate that she could fire when ready.

Aaaand left foot forward. Got it. Chell gave Sheik a nod of appreciation before doing just that, scooting her leg up a bit until she felt relatively steady. The boy had a point - she did feel much more grounded now. Given that he had mentioned being something of an archer himself, she made a mental note to pay attention to whatever he might have to say, as he surely knew what he was talking about. Similarities to the portal gun aside, this was still a weapon of it's own, and it would probably take her at least a tiny bit of practice before she fully got the hang of it.

Case in point, Impa soon made her way over herself, ready to give her own recommendation. What was it with her and left limbs today? Smirking a bit, the former test subject did as she was told, bringing her left hand forward until the crossbow was fully supported. As with before, it made a world of difference, and proved to be much more comfortable than the posture she had taken up beforehand. With that out of the way, she looked back at her friends one last time to see if they thought she was ready, and caught Impa's nod of encouragement. Looked like everything was set.

Taking in a breath, Chell carefully drew back the string of her weapon until it was locked into place, recalling what her friends had told her back at The Inn. It seemed like a simple enough weapon to use, though as she took aim at the center dot on the tree, an eerie sense of familiarity overcame her. It had been so long since she used a weapon like this - not to mention the last time she'd touched said weapon, it had been under a considerably more life-or-death situation. Still, as downright eerie as it felt to be holding something in this way though, the environment she was in now couldn't have been more different from the labs, and the crossbow felt a touch more worn against her hands than the smooth shell of the portal gun had. It was comforting, and helped her relax as she narrowed her eyes at the target.

And so, with a light touch of her trigger finger, she fired.

Sheik watched as Chell shifted her stance, right before smiling to her and returning the nod she was given. She could instantly tell the difference in how much more stable her friend's posture was, and and the slight adjustment that she made at Impa's suggestion seemed to help her too. The former test subject already had a natural grip on the crossbow, but now her position was even more perfect. It was kind of interesting to see Chell hold the weapon so well, especially considering the differences between the two worlds that they came from, but despite that… this look just seemed right for her.

With both of their recommendations heeded, Sheik and Impa stepped back slightly, ready for Chell to have her first real go at using the Hylian crossbow. The disguised princess waited patiently, waiting to see just where her first arrow would strike… the former test subject had the arrow notched, her aim steady, and with that… she fired her first shot!

… and proceeded to miss the entire tree.

Oh… well… the disguised princess hadn't exactly anticipated that. She winced sympathetically, knowing all too well what it felt like to miss where you wanted to hit on a target, but hopefully this first shot would only help their friend out even with getting the feel for the new weapon.

"Aah, sorry about that… I'm sure you'll get the next one, though!" said Sheik, hoping to sound extra encouraging for Chell.

Once Chell had made the two adjustments that both she and her charge had pointed out, Impa watched carefully as her friend moved to take her first test shot. Even with as simple as the shifting of her left leg and hand had been, both the Sheikah's Eyes of Truth and general observation were able to see the world of difference that those changes had made. Making sure one had the proper stance and then engraining it by way of training helped it to become even more natural when one was combatting outside of a controlled situation, and no matter how each of the first arrows flew, Impa knew that this was going to prove very helpful for her.

Now, all that Chell had to do was try taking her first shot. Impa trained her eyes on the former test subject, noting that both her grip and stance were close enough to perfect… but there was something just slightly off about her angling…

Impa narrowed her gaze, nearly ready to say something else, but right at that moment, Chell pulled the trigger. With that, it was best to wait until just after this shot so that she would not suddenly whip around mid-fire. As for that shot, it looked to be…

A complete miss… well that was certain unexpected.

"That's all right, Chell. The arrow might have missed the mark, but you held your form perfectly," stated Impa, adding to Sheik's sentiment and hoping that the former test subject would not be too discouraged with that shot. It was her first time using the crossbow after all, so even with her apparent ranged weapons experience, it was not right to expect her to get everything exactly right the first time. She still needed to practice, and every shot fired was going to be one more gain in this training. "If I might… try to angle your body just a bit more forward and right with regards to the tree. That should help out a little with the crossbow's aim... and prevent it from pulling you to the left."

    ...She missed.

How the hell had she managed that?

Blinking, the former test subject took a second to spare a glance in Impa and Sheik's direction before immediately focusing back on the target, brows furrowing in puzzlement. In retrospect, she probably shouldn't have expected herself to get it right on the very first try. Regardless of how familiar the crossbow felt in her hands, it was still, technically, a very new weapon for her, and one she wasn't guaranteed to master in a day. And if she was being honest? It had been a long time since she'd handled a weapon, or experienced anything that was even remotely like a battle. She hadn't gone soft since arriving at the Breach, per say, as she had been exercising as diligently as she could - despite not having to be constantly on the move anymore, she still couldn't stomach the thought of not being able to fight for herself if she needed to - but... well. After the situation she had come out of, it was just so easy to brush off things like practicing her aim in favor of exploring more of the city, or reading a book, or simply taking a longer-than-usual shower. Chell had a somewhat legendary focus when it came to things that were important to her, but the need for defense wasn't something that had really come to her attention until the events that had transpired earlier in the month.

To put it bluntly, she was a little rusty.

Encouragement courtesy of Sheik sounded off behind her, which she acknowledged with a nod, though never once taking her eyes off of the tree. Oh, she was going to make sure her next shot at least hit near the target, that was for sure. Taking a moment to make sure the crossbow was set, she listened carefully to Impa's next instructions, having to suppress a grin despite herself. The woman wasn't used to having teachers, not by a long shot, but she appreciated their encouragement and advice all the same. It was different, but... a good kind of different. Changing her position ever so slightly, Chell took heed of the Sheikah's instructions and focused back on the center of the target, eyes narrowing. Once she felt like everything was lined up, she pressed down on the trigger and fired again, sending the arrow streaking through the air in a blur.

Poor Chell… Sheik had had her own share of misses during her training sessions since she had first taken up the bow, so whether it was a near or complete miss, she could definitely sympathize with the former test subject here. Chell seemed rather confused by just how off the miss had been, but Sheik had a very strong feeling that she would only let that shot work as a better experience instead of as something against her. The former test subject struck her as the type to learn from everything, whether it was a hit or miss, and now that she was able to feel the shots as she fired them with the crossbow, she should be able to make them even better.

Her friend might have continued to focus her gaze on the target (which was very understandable of course), but at least she had been able to nod in response to her own words of encouragement. Nodding in agreement with Impa's own statements, Sheik watched as Chell shifted her position to resteady the crossbow. Hopefully, the slight adjustments would prevent the weapon from pulling her to the left again. Again, she readied her weapon, pulled the trigger, and…

    HIT!

Okay, so she had hit the outer edge of the outermost ring of the target that Impa had made, but she had still hit the tree AND part of the target itself! That was a distinct improvement, and more than that, it meant that she was on the right track with this training! She had a strong feeling that in no time, their friend would start to get the hang of this weapon, and thus get even more experienced at it.

Unable to resist a small fistpump, Sheik grinned and called, "Great job, Chell! I think you found the perfect grip on it!"

Somehow, in the way that Chell carried herself, Impa could tell that she wasn't quite used to having an instructor of any sort. Thankfully her friend did not seem to mind that they had fallen into the roles of master and student… that certainly helped out here. The Sheikah herself was very used to falling into the role of master, teacher, or general instructor, but she could definitely understand how landing on the other side when one was not used to such could prove interesting. Just the former test subject had been once she had first met her though, Chell was tenacious and ready to give anything she wanted her all… and that was likely going to prove very critical here.

As the Sage of Shadow predicted, the former test subject was not about to let a stray shot mess with her confidence. No sooner had she heeded her own advice and made the proper adjustments than had she got that crossbow set again. Her stance was even better this time, right down to the careful compensation to prevent the crossbow favoring the left… now all that was left was the followthrough on her end. She aimed, fired, and…

    *THUNK-KT-KT-KT-TA!*

Now that was more like it…

This second arrow might have hit the outermost ring of the target, but she had still struck within the target itself. Impa smiled slightly, nodding at her friend as the three of them looked to where the arrow had wound up. This was definitely a point to build on now, and once Sheik had spoken her own encouragement, Impa stated, "There you go. Nice shot… did that feel better for you?"

If there was anything to say about where the arrow wound up hitting, it was that Sheik's assumptions had been right. Though it may not have struck where Chell had initially wanted it to, it had at least touched the tree this time, and for that? She would gladly take the outer ring. The former test subject outright grinned when she heard Sheik's rather enthusiastic encouragement behind her and lowered the weapon, finding that she couldn't help but agree. Rusty as she may have been, the crossbow was starting to feel more natural in her hands, and if this shot was any indication, it was something she could work with.

Giving Impa a proud thumb's up in response to her question, the former test subject bobbed her head, eyes still fixed on the target. Although she was pretty sure she had a good idea of how to work the thing now, she certainly wasn't ready to stop just quite yet, already gearing up for her next shot. Third time's a charm, perhaps?

Over the next 45 minutes, her focus remained entirely on the tree as she practiced, with short breaks in between to consult her friends for various bits of advice and tips. Not every shot fired had been a good one, but they were growing progressively more confident along with her attitude, and before long, she found herself growing a tad bit attached to the weapon. It was familiar enough that it wasn't too much of a shock to ease into using, but juuuust different enough to prevent any unwanted feelings of uneasiness. Satisfied with her work so far, she strode back to Impa and Sheik, tapping the handle of the crossbow with an approving smile and a nod. There was no doubt in her mind now - this was the one.

    Re: Chell's Crossbow Training

Sure enough, the third time was the charm as Chell fired her arrow right inside the bullseye. She seemed to have found her stride now, and with that, her training was bound to really take off. Over the course of the next 45 minutes, she continued to practice with the crossbow, firing at the target that Impa had made appear on the tree, getting progressively better with just about every shot. Even the ones that did not quite hit their mark were still excellent learning experiences, and she was able to use any of those to better correct her stance.

She only stopped here and there to check with her and Impa for any questions she happened to think of, to remove excess arrows from the tree, or if either of her friends wound up spotting something that they though might help her even more. Overall, it proved to be a very useful and fun session, and it even wound up benefiting Sheik herself. She might have been better with a regular bow instead of a crossbow, but being able to study and observe the former test subject in action definitely helped her to practice her own perception. More than that, she was able to take a look at combat stances from a different perspective… perhaps this had been a secondary aspect of Impa's plan to have them all head out on a training venture today. Smiling slightly to herself as she thought more on that, Sheik glanced up at her guardian before continuing to watch their friend fire at the tree.

When Chell fired one last volley of arrows at the tree, she relaxed her posture instead of moving to reload the crossbow with a new bolt. She turned to walk towards the two of them, smiling and patting the crossbow as she did so. Unable to suppress a grin at catching the meaning behind that action, Sheik soon nodded, stating, "I'm glad it works so well! It fits you perfectly… it's like it was meant to be the weapon for you."

As Chell, Impa, and Sheik caught up in this latest break in the training though, a quick scan of the distant surround area would prove that they were not alone out in the grasslands. Impa had predicted earlier that there was indeed a chance of the trio having a monster stumble upon them at some point… and what had been a mere chance was just about to turn into a definite occurrence.

With large, heavy steps, a great beast trod across the rolling hills of the Samba Heartlands. He wasn't the only one of his kind out here, but this particular breed of monster tended to work alone… they would all patrol a general area together of course, but each one would find a his own course and take care of it.

    "Grrrrrr…. grrrr…."

Growling as he continued forward and looking about, his beady eyes soon went wide with surprise. Having crested this next hill, he saw that no, his own little area was NOT free of intruders! There were in fact three interlopers here! Just standing there like they owned the grasslands! Well he had news for them… they didn't, and this was HIS area to look after! If anyone got in his way, he was going to take them out with his own fierce might. No one, no matter how strong, could stand against the power of a Moblin!

"RrrAAAH!" roared the Moblin as he readied his spear, right before charging directly at Impa. THAT would teach them to trespass here!
