The Quest for a Fairy Fountain

In no time at all, Kev, Sheik, and Impa had all made their way past Lovers' Meadow into far broader expanse of the grasslands. They had definitely lucked out with regards to the weather that day, as the mostly clear blue skies that the trio had found earlier were set to stay with them for quite some time. As the gentlest of breezes swept across the plains, the three adventurers found that they could scarcely have picked a better day to embark on a quest. None of them knew exactly what they might find of course, but as ever, the journey was far more important than wherever it wound up taking them.

As they traversed the verdant fields, the Sheikah warrior made sure to keep a sharp eye out for anything that might lead them to a fairy fountain, or even to the slightest hint of one. They had passed a decent number of large boulders already, but none of them seemed to be hiding any secret grottos beneath their rocky might. Impa's Eyes of Truth had not found any secret tunnels that one might accidentally discover by way of wandering though the tall grass, but she knew that their existence was still a distinct possibility. She might not have caught any hints of what they were searching for yet, but she was set to let both her friend and charge know the instant she spotted anything.

Still, the journey was already proving to be most enjoyable, and Impa couldn't help but smile as she glanced over to Kev. "I have to say, you really do live in a beautiful area… the grasslands here remind me very much of Hyrule Field back home."

"Yeah, it's pretty great here!" agreed Sheik, easily keeping pace with both Impa and Kev as the trio continued their trek across the grasslands. The layout was different of course, but everything from the rolling hills, the random trees, the mysteriously placed boulders, and the occasional fence reminded her of Hyrule Field. She had been out here a couple of times since arriving on Portal Breach, but no matter how often she wound up here, she was always hit with the same welcome rush of pleasant memories.

She and Link would definitely have to bring Epona out here again very soon….

As the three continued on their way, Sheik made sure to keep her senses peeled for any indication of a possible fairy fountain. She knew that Impa was already on target for that, but she wanted to make sure to keep an eye out too. It would not only help them find one, it would also be very good for helping to hone her tracking and spotting abilities. The only question now was when they might find something.

The three of them walked, primarily in silence, but it was not an uncomfortable one. They all were taking in the sights, and in Kev's case getting a nice dose of ultraviolet. He even rolled his sleeves up to soak as much of the sun as he could, gloves taken off for the moment. The more of his skin that showed and soaked up UV, the more of it he 'ate'. In case they might get too hot though, there was a steady, gentle breeze that could cool them off.

Like his companions, Kev kept his eyes out on the surroundings, although he wasn't quite sure what to look for. He just kept an eye for anything that looked like a fairy! Or a fountain. Or anything worth mentioning at all to his companions. Impa spoke though, and Kev moved his eyes from the horizon to her own red eyes, as well as Sheik's. "Thanks!~ I really like it too, although that's kinda obvious since I live here. I really prefer this place to the city, much calmer, and neater. Leslie's the one who decided this place would be a great place to live." He glanced back at Sheik, impressed that the young boy was so easily keeping in step with them when his legs were nowhere near as long as his and Impa's.

"So, remind me again, what are we looking for with a fairy fountain precisely? Cause right now I'm just looking for anything that might seem suspicious."

"Obvious or not, you have fine taste… and I can certainly appreciate the appeal of it," said Impa, nodding to Kev. Smiling softly to him, she added, "She made a wise choice."

In all honesty, Impa greatly preferred the setting of a smaller village to the hustle and bustle of Portal City. Having grown up in the quiet and pastoral setting of Kakariko Village, she certainly appreciated the benefits of a calmer area… and even once she had moved to Hyrule Castle at becoming Princess Zelda's guardian, she had still felt very fortunate for the setting that she had been able to live in. Even on its busiest days, the market of Hyrule Castle Town was still a fraction of any of the potential numbers that were found in the capital of the Breach.

As much as she enjoyed the quieter setting of village life, Impa was very content to stay at the Stock Pot Inn, and not just because of the work she had put into modifying her room to resemble her home back in Hyrule. Not only had she, Zelda, and the Link from their time all made it their new home on the Breach, the future Link worked there, so in very many ways, their own little family resided there together. Having three of her now four charges there was especially heart-warming, and with everything that the inn offered, it really was the perfect place for all of them.

"I rather like it myself… but Sheik, both of the Links, and I have wound up making the inn into a very nice home for ourselves," stated Impa. She laughed slightly and noted, "We have managed to find our own brand of calm and neatness there, even with the occasional dynamics of it."

At Kev's question regarding what they were looking for, Impa motioned ahead of their position, focusing her gaze as she continued to look for any leads for their. "There are a few possibilities, really… and looking for something suspicious is just one of those. Fairy fountains are hidden, and as such, are not supposed to be easy for just anyone to find. However… some places to find them include areas of tall grass, grottos hidden underneath boulders, and concealed caverns that one can only be found by playing a certain song."

Regarding the topic of city living versus a quieter home out in the grasslands, Zelda was on the same page as Impa. She might have grown up inside of Hyrule Castle, and she might have enjoyed venturing out to the often bustling market, but that could still scarcely compare to the full scale of Portal City. Whether she was in the castle or staying in Kakariko Village, she did prefer calmer settings. Still… if one knew where to look, they could find the exact same sanctuary in the city. That was rarely in the Sanctuary itself, but whether it was at the Stock Pot Inn or otherwise, it had been easier to find. Zelda had made a home there with her guardian and her two closest friends… and between the inn itself as well as the three dearest to her, she absolutely loved it.

As Impa began to detail some of the possible places for finding fairy fountains, the disguised princess nodded before chiming in. "The thing with fairy fountains is that you can try to look for those things, and they do help, but each one is different," added Sheik, glancing out over the horizon as well. "I've been trying to look for any of those possible signs… and you've been using your Eyes of Truth, right Impa?"

As her guardian nodded to her, Sheik's smile grew a bit before she turned back to Kev. "As for that song… that's the Song of Storms. It's a magical melody from Hyrule, and if it's played on just the right instrument, it can actually cause a sudden rainstorm to appear… or even the entrance to a fairy fountain to be revealed."

Kev matched Impa's nod with a happy nod of his own, as they continued walking. "Thank you! I wish I could say the same for you two but I haven't seen much of your taste beyond your clothes, but those are pretty great taste too! For instance, Sheik, those bandages look oddly fashionable on you! Gives you an air of mystery~!" He glanced away for a moment, scales a bit greener then usual as he nodded in agreement. "She did. She's a wise woman."

He glanced back at Impa as she mentioned that they lived in the inn, especially since she mentioned that she lived there with both of the Links, in addition to Sheik. "Oh, nice! I used to live at the Inn too! Its a nice place to live, even while being in the city. Maybe I can visit you guys one day, where do you live there?" It'd be rather nice to see both of the Links again! Even if he was still a little curious about how there could be several boys named Link who looked slightly similar to each other.

He straightened up as Impa began to detail how they were to spot a fairy fountain, eyeing the horizon again. So they were hidden, not easy to find. But some places they could be where tall grass, grottos, and caverns you could only find by playing a song? "Huh..." So odd! He turned to face Sheik as he added to the discussion too. Each one was different. "That must make them tricky to find. But that's interesting how each one is unique like that!" Song of Storms? "Magic music? Hmm..." That sounded familiar. Maybe one of the Links played some magic music in the sanctuary once? "I reckon we don't happen to have one such instrument on us, do we? That's fine though, we can find it with our impeccable eyes of Truth, Sheikness, and....hugeness!"

Indeed, the afternoon was a very pleasant one as the three good friends made their way across the grasslands. They were all searching for any signs of a possible fairy fountain, but even though their skills of observation were being put to the test, any spot checks that they might have attempted were not going to meet them with the clues they were searching for yet. Instead, they were soon going to discover that they were not quite alone out here…

No, as the trio crested the next hill, they were soon met with the surprised cries of two red Bokoblins. The goblin-like creatures were stunned at having stumbled across some unsuspecting adventurers, and the two Hyrulean foes soon held up their large, beat-up knives and charged forward.

As they managed to descend upon the three travelers that had wound up coming near their new territory, they decided to try and take out the two larger foes first. As the one with the wider knife slashed at that green alien, the leader of the two (wearing his horned cap proudly) attacked the slightly taller woman. How dare they surprise them like this, just appearing out of nowhere and minding their own darn business! Bokoblins never took kindly to that, much less just about anything else!

Impa simply smiled at Kev's kind words to both her and Sheik. She did not fail to notice that her friend's scales were quite a bit more green as his thoughts seemed to get swept back to Leslie… Impa might not have known the full story behind the fae's disappearance, but she did know something of her involvement with Kev. Regardless of those facts, she hoped that the slight shift in their topic had not been uncomfortable for their friend.

He did seem to come back to himself in short order though, as he mentioned how he used to live at the inn. The Sheikah recalled that the future Link had mentioned that at one point, although it had been quite a bit before she herself had wound up on the Breach. When Kev inquired about their room, Impa replied, "We live in room 421. You are always welcome to come visit us, Kev…. we would love to have your company there."

Before Impa could note that Sheik had her lyre on her person or that she herself was rather adept at whistling, the impeccable eyes that Kev had just spoken highly of happened to catch something right towards them. Her red gaze narrowed as she saw two red Bokoblins very swiftly encroaching on their position, weapons drawn and held high. "Stay sharp you two! It seems the Breach decided to send us something else from Hyrule!"

Sure enough, the two Bokoblins moved in for the attack, one swinging wildly at Kev and the other striking quickly at Impa. He was surprisingly fast for a monster of his sort, and the Sheikah barely managed to block his blow with the metal gauntlet she wore. Her arm had come up just in time to catch the strike, but the armor lining her gauntlet had definitely taken a nice blow. It wasn't enough to slow Impa down though, as in one swift motion, she had drawn her knife and slashed at the Bokoblin's exposed belly three times, right before quickly disappearing and reappearing behind the two foes.

Sheik grinned as Kev remarked on her bandages, soon adjusting the wrapped ones on her head slightly. "Thanks, Kev. The bandages are actually a tradition for young Sheikah to wear… they're part of the culture, and wearing them over certain places helps us to sharpen our senses even more… that's because we have to work harder to use them. Impa even wore some when she was younger."

The disguised princess' smile grew at the idea of Kev coming to visit them. She didn't know when he might get the chance to, but she really did hope he could swing by soon. For one, he was always great company, and two it would be a great surprise for both of the Links.

As Impa described the best possible places to find a fairy fountain and ways to stumble upon them, Sheik couldn't help but laugh slightly once Kev inquired about any of them having an instrument on their person. "I've actually got my lyre… I almost always carry it with me, and with the right song, it is capable of performing its own sort of magic."

Unfortunately, before Sheik could even pull out her lyre to show it to Kev, her red eyes soon darted forward, catching sight of what Impa had caught first. Two Bokoblins had come rushing over the hill, headed straight for them! Ready to spring into battle, Sheik immediately took a defensive stance as the two monsters moved to attack Impa and Kev. Whilst the regular Bokoblin missed its strike against the Kryptonistanian, her guardian wound up having to block the strike instead of dodging it. Impa appeared to be all right though, and Sheik knew that she was certainly made of tougher stuff than what a Bokoblin could take down.

Once Impa had switched her position, Sheik took advantage of the opening and charged up three sizable blasts of Din's Fire, throwing them right for the Bokoblin with the helmet. Hopefully, they could dispatch the two monsters soon and resume their quest… and hopefully they wouldn't need the fairies' healing magic too soon already!

"You're welcome!~" Thinking again, perhaps telling a young boy that his outfit looked fashionable was uh...not the best adjective to use to describe it. But if Sheik was upset by the decidedly feminine adjective he didn't show it and had instead thanked him. Was it any wonder that Kev had grown so fond of the boy? "Ooh, they're traditional?" How interesting! He turned his head to Sheik and listened, nodding to show that he understood. "I see! For instance, your ears are covered, and with those bandages, you must focus harder to hear! That's pretty smart!" And Impa herself had worn them too? Huh! How neat!~

"Ooh, 421! I've got it locked away in my memory now, won't even dream of forgetting!" He even tapped the side of his head a bit for demonstration. Oh no, he would remember that room number and when he got a chance, he'd surprise them with a visit~! "I'd love to come over the first chance I get. I haven't seen the Link that talks in quite a while!" And he and the Link that doesn't talk really needed to actually see each other during a happy time. He turned back to Sheik, head tilting a bit. "A lyre, that's a small string instrument, right?" Working at a little music shop had helped make him a bit savvier about music and instruments. But not enough to realize that a sensual instrument was an awkward one. "I'd love to hear you play sometime, Sheik!"

And then suddenly, Impa drew their attention to some odd creatures that were heading their way. "Oh my GODS! They're so ugly!" Perhaps that wasn't the best observation to make as the two creatures came right for them, but it just slipped out! One with a hat went to Impa, attempting to strike at her, but Kev focused on one with a very wide knife, that slashed out towards him. Now, you can say whatever you want about Kev's slim little figure, but there was an advantage to being slim and noodly, and that showed right now as Kev hopped to the right and backwards to avoid the knife, lithe body successfully avoiding a cut. From the side of his vision, he saw Impa and Sheik easily take down the one with a hat. These things must not be very strong!

"My turn.~" He pulled his hand back and made a fist, punching at the bokoblin's rather round pot belly. It seemed like one of the easiest places to attack after all! He sent another punch before pulling his arm back for a moment. He pressed a button on the side of his glove, igniting a fire in his palm, and he reached back and struck, aiming for the bokoblin's face this time! Flaming punch!~

How was this possible?! They had got the drop on their unsuspecting opponents, so how had the Bokoblin Leader of this small band been felled already?! Between the strong knife slash of the Sheikah woman and the three expertly aimed blasts of fire, he had been taken down! And the remaining Bokoblin had been brought down to the brink of his own demise! That punch and fiery punch from the green alien had hurt royally! Managing to catch his breath from the first punch and his bearings from having been hit by a burning punch to the face, the little monster shook his head, growling in disbelief. This was not what was supposed to happen! No, the mighty Bokoblins did not wander the vast grasslands to be defeated by intruders such as the likes of these!

Pitching a vertiable fit and making all sorts of unintelligible racket, the remaining Bokoblin ran towards the smallest of the three intruders, hoping that his smaller size would make him easier to bring down. Whether he made it through this battle himself or not though, his only remaining hope to take out these three were that some of his fellow Bokoblins were still patrolling the area. If they were, they might be able to help him, or at the very least avenge him.

With a fierce exclamation, the red Bokoblin swung his wide knife wildly at the younger target. Don't even try and think about shield-bashing this strike!
