    It Starts

Post by Rasa 'Jeqkogoai on Sun Jul 29, 2012 11:23 am

    Date: 02/6/2012
    Time: Cusp of Evening

The Tally wrote:She would trust him to lead the way and not take them right off the edge of a cliff.
Rasa'Jeqkogoai stared directly down. Not at his thick, armored toes but at the treacherous ravine that stubbornly impeded their journey. Who put that cliff here? It wasn't there before. "Hmph. This land changes as if it possessed moods," the Sangheili grumbled. The abrupt drop went ahead for several hundred feet in either direction and the warrior squared his shoulders. A worthy challenge it is! Turning, Rasa'Jeqkogoai knelt awkwardly and began to ease himself into the sharp incline. "Come, the Tally," he urged, body steadily disappearing into the chasm. "We will best this natural foe and climb to the very bottom. From there we shall climb back up the other side and continue our journey into the wilderness." Despite having uncomfortable legs the alien was determined.

It was, of course, simply easier to walk around the crag but where was the honor in that? There was none, and Rasa'Jeqkogoai could use the warmup to shake out the weakness in his muscles. He had every confidence in his friend, the Tally, to make the same climb with little to no trouble.

"Hmph. This land changes as if it possessed moods,"

Or giant rock wurms She mumbled under her breath as she followed after the larger warrior. That mountain was certainly different, perhaps X was feeling the need to change the landscape. Or maybe her good friend Tim had decided to split open the earth again.

Tally took the chance when she had it too look over the edge, somehow, she just knew that this was a call back to what she had thought earlier. This right here was a prime example of irony.

And could tally make the climb? Of course, she had climbed a mountain after all, and gone through the wastelands, and done a lot of other dangerous stuff while she was gone for six months. Of course, that still didn't mean that she shouldn't take this seriously. One wrong step and she could find herself falling to the bottom.

Tally followed Rasa carefully to the bottom of the crag.

Giant what? Rasa'Jeqkogoai had not heard entirely but maybe the Tally was simply talking to herself. He left her privacy out of respect and did not further question. Meanwhile, traveling to the bottom of the ravine was neither easy or hard. It wasn't hard because Rasa'Jeqkogoai had great upper body strength, but it wasn't easy because his legs were simply not meant to climb. Despite this physical disadvantage he wanted to make the descent anyway. "What has made you desire to partake in this pilgrimage?" the warrior suddenly asked. Perhaps some light conversation will make the passage down here more bearable.

It would be awhile before they both reached the bottom and Rasa'Jeqkogoai was curious as to why the Tally had decided to tag along. Of course if she chose not to reply then he would honor her wish and inquire no further. And if she pleased the Tally may ask a question of him in kind. Rasa'Jeqkogoai was fairly comfortable answering when it concerned the Tally.

Probably better that Rasa didn't hear. Who knows how comfortable he would have been with the knowledge that there was a giant rock wurm, that lived in the mountains of portal breach and was so large that she could split the earth. The knowledge might have made him nervous, even if the wurm was extremely polite and could serve amazing tea.

Tally's body, thankfully, was a bit more equipped for climbing down. Her upper body and her lower body were both fairly strong from years of being on Portal Breach, and the human body allowed for quite a bit of flexibility. Her real disadvantage was her height. It could make it very difficult when it came to jumping across things or trying to reach things higher up.

She continued to follow the Sangheili down...down...down...into the ravine. Always mindful of her steps, always careful where she put her foot.

His question caught her a bit off guard, it was not something she liked to admit after all.

You're my friend, she stated plainly, and before he could question her on it more she elaborated for him. I have a history of not being a very good friend, on Portal Breach I mean. Her apathy towards her friends death. Her fleeing into the wilderness when she discovered that Sonia had returned...

She wasn't just tagging along for Rasa's sake, she wouldn't say so either because that would be a lie and it wasn't right for her to lie to him. She was hoping that she could prove to herself that she still could be a good friend.

    Selfish? Yes.

But just because she had her own reason's for coming along didn't mean that she didn't care for Rasa. Because she did, and she had missed him. So she had come along not only for her own sake, but also to well....see him again...and maybe make sure that he didn't fall off of a cliff or get eaten by horrible wobbling monstrosities or something. You know, what friends did...

Just trying to get back to being a good one is all. Tally had to carefully maneuver herself for the next step, but she managed it all the same. It would take some time to reach the bottom, but they were getting closer with every step.

Why did you invite me along? She asked him back.

Not being a good friend? What blasphemy was this? "I think you are a fine friend, the Tally," Rasa'Jeqkogoai disagreed. How could the Tally question her status so? She was honorable, she fought well, and she held determination. Kindness and respect were both earned from her, and he admired this sharp nature. The warrior sensed that perhaps the Tally's past was weighing her mind this way. He knew better than to inquire, however. It was not his place to pry.

There was a lull of silence before either of them reached the ravine's bottom, and this provided the perfect opportunity for conversation to continue. "And what do you think makes a good friend?" he asked. On his world it was resolve, diligence, loyalty; the stuff every chivalrous Sangheili strove to achieve. Was the Tally not this way? It could be that Rasa'Jeqkogoai was naive and did not readily know that the Tally had another side to her; a side he had never seen. Such a thought was not something he often lingered about. Her question brought him brief pause and the warrior would have to mull upon this introspection another time. He was in the presence of company and the Tally was more important.

"I invited you along because you seemed troubled." Nothing but honesty in his words here, at the bottom of the ravine. As the sky above darkened Rasa'Jeqkogoai looked up to observe it, the alien bringing his lengthy head back down once he had enough to see. They would need to get moving to avoid being stuck down here in the approaching darkness. "You seemed troubled, and a journey to clear one's soul was the most fitting medicine I knew," he spoke. As he, himself, had a soul to purify...

Rasa'Jeqkogoai didn't stay to discuss further, withal. He turned his back to the Tally and resumed their course, the powerful Sangheili climbing back up the rocky wall. "Come. Night seeks us and we should find cover before continuing." Unless the Tally vied for them to brave the dark, Rasa'Jeqkogoai knew it was safe to walk in the sun's rays.

A good friend? Perhaps on the surface, but there was much about Tally that Rasa didn't know, she had many faults. Honorable? He thought her honorable? Tally would have been humbled to know that. Because while Tally certainly didn't think of herself as the worst citizen, she certainly wouldn't place herself as one of the best either.

Being there for your friends when they need you to be. Something she had most certainly not been with Sonia. She had left, to overcome her apathy towards her life as well as the lives of the others. But if she was completely honest that was not the only reason she had left. It was because she was afraid. Downright terrified actually, of facing her best friend after having felt nothing about her death. Tally had ran away, had been a coward and skipped town all because she hadn't been brave enough to face her friend.

Just another negative quality in a long list of negative qualities.

She was bitter, jaded, and could be downright mean when she wanted to be. Especially towards those that were newly arrived. In Tally's own mind this bias was slightly justified. Her friends, the people she had known and come to love since her own world was destroyed were mostly gone. They had tamed Portal Breach, protected it from all the glitches and enemies that came before. Brought order to it, gave it a system, had worked hard to create the foundation for the society that existed.

And no one remembered them, and as years passed more of them disappeared and then were replaced by others. Finally only several of them were left, they were the only ones that remembered.

Such bias wasn't really a quality that an "Honorable" person should have, nor was bitterness.

Tally looked up towards the darkening sky as they reached the bottom of the ravine. Her attention then drawn back to Rasa. When had she become so transparent? Tally was grateful for the faint light, it helped hide her red face as she flushed in embarrassment. She prided herself on keeping things to herself. But then again Rasa was also a solider, and from what she knew also older than her, so maybe he just knew how to identify certain things.

Right. No, she would not want to be stuck down in a ravine or out in the wild after night had fallen. There were too many things in the forest that could possibly maim them. They would have to make camp soon and Tally wasn't helping the process move along any faster by simply standing around. So she followed after Rasa and began to climb back towards the sky.

What do you think makes one? She asked offhandedly after a long pause of silence.

Hmm, the Tally had many challenging topics within her introspect. By the time Rasa'Jeqkogoai had reached the grassy land above and was safely situated, he had fitting answers to reply with. He will start with the first. "Being there for your friends is a good reason," he agreed while waiting for the Tally to join him above. Slight sweat glistened down the length of his mandibles, the Sangheili's breathing subtly taxed. He was more out of shape than originally thought! "But sometimes, the Tally, you cannot always be there for your friends. And sometimes it is just as well that you not be there in case your presence may hinder them. A physical connection can be desirable but I find that both a spiritual and mental nexus will suffice depending on the situation." In other words, one can be a friend in thought and heart alone. A friend may appreciate the effort all the same.

Now that they were together again it was time to move. Rasa'Jeqkogoai led the way, the warrior not afraid of what lurked in the darkness but increasingly more respectful as the sun's light waned. The grasslands were vast and flat, perfect for predatory opportunity. They would have to create a suitable defense against the night and prepare a light campfire for visual aid. Some cooking wouldn't be bad, either. "What I think makes a good friend?" repeated the Sangheili. As with the Tally's perspective, it depends.

As a Sangheili his people valued honor, loyalty; the will and resolve to stick to one's values. One's family values, even. These were seen as worthwhile traits in a person, along with respect and diligence. And, as a militaristic society, following chivalrous orders was not something frowned upon as well. But did that necessarily make a good friend internally?

"I strongly believe that a good friend will be honest with you no matter what the situation calls for," he finally spoke at last. "They will speak from the heart but direct with knowledge of the mind; they will have both passion and restraint working in unison. I also believe that a good friend will accept that change comes from within, but not necessarily from outside pressure. They will be strong, but not afraid to show vulnerability. Humble, but also with pride." In a way, Rasa'Jeqkogoai believed that a true friend would recognize that the world was filled with dichotomies. And with these dichotomies they will not treat them as separate but as equals, working alongside both strengths and flaws. It may be a hard standard to follow, but Rasa'Jeqkogoai had confidence that an individual could if they tried. Like the Tally's desire to be both a good person to those she cared for and bitter to those she did not. A positive and a negative that made a person balanced and whole.

Suddenly the Sangheili stopped to look around, Rasa'Jeqkogoai surveying the land. "Flat but no cover to hide whatever stalks us," he said. "We shall rest here for the night unless you wish to reach the forest's edge." Far, far away there were trees but they were nowhere near being close. It was a few hours' walk at best. What would the Tally prefer?

Reaching the surface not long after Rasa, Tally took a moment to catch her breath and enjoy the rhythmic throbbing in her arms. It had been awhile since she had had such a workout, it felt nice in spite of the sweat collecting at the back of her neck and along her brown. Stepping away from the mouth of the crevice she considered Rasa's words. His words made sense, yes. After all, you couldn't be there all the time, physically that was. But Tally had to wondered if she was a good enough friend in heart and mind alone.

    Did she show it enough?

Tally continued to follow after Rasa, they were reaching the grasslands now. She had visited a similar place once, but that had been very long ago, and she hadn't explored it much. This place was just as new to her as it was to Rasa.

Humble, but also with pride."

Tally silently examined Rasa's words. Honesty? Yes, there was honesty in her relationship with Sonia. Sometimes too much honesty, enough to get a hairbrush thrown at her head or for her to cast a glare. But those sort of reactions were usually in good fun. The rest? It sounded like what Rasa considered to make a good friend was what many others considered to make a good friend. Though, perhaps he was just a bit more elegant in his description of it.

Thank you, for telling me your honest opinion. There would be much that she would have to think over before their trip was done.

Tally continued to follow, never breaking pace until the alien finally came to a halt.

"Flat but no cover to hide whatever stalks us," he said. "We shall rest here for the night unless you wish to reach the forest's edge."

No, I'm fine with stopping here. I'll start getting the fire going. Even if the woods were a ways off there was always something around that could burn. Tally had learned that the hard way when she had first gone off into the wild on her own. Her first night she had improperly prepared the fire, afraid of running out of fuel she had kept too much nearby and not properly kept an eye on the flame.

What had two thumbs and almost burned down the entire forest by accident?

    You get three guesses.

Point was there was always something that would burn. Unless of course you were in the wastelands or high mountains. Then things got a little harder. But in an area like where Rasa had chosen there was at least enough flora that a fire could be made if not sustained. Tally gathered what would be needed and returned to the other. It then hit her, right as she was striking the match and lighting the first bit of fuel that she was going to be alone with Rasa for what could be several weeks, if not more. She had never been in the other's presence for more than several hours, at most.

What was she going to do?

There were probably tons of questions she could ask.

Hey, why do you call me "The" tally? That was something that she had always been curious about, why did Rasa add a "the" before her and everyone else's names?

Good. The Tally appeared at ease with collecting proper kindling and fire materials. Had she done this before? As the human prepared their campfire for the evening Rasa'Jeqkogoai kept a keen watch around their makeshift perimeter. Like he had said the plains were open; anything could jump out and attack if they dropped their guard for even a moment's notice. This is why, when the alien finished yet another survey of the land, he grabbed at his holstered plasma rifle to make sure that it was ready when necessary. Oh, a question his way? "Forgive me," he spoke in the usual deep rumble. "I know it is improper in your native tongue, but old habits, as they say, die hard." An interesting query but not unwelcome.

Once the fire was up and infantile Rasa'Jeqkogoai knelt down, his massive hands shielding the fire lest something blow it prematurely out. "It is custom in my culture to say an individual's proper title to show respect," the Sangheili explained. "Although you do not possess any of these titles, nor anyone here, it..." He thought for a bit, as if to ponder the words carefully before he said them. "It simply translates into my speech as I am not entirely familiar with human diction. Does this bother you?" Rasa'Jeqkogoai suddenly asked. Was pronouncing names with "the" an insult or sense of inferiority? Had he been rude to his friend all this time...? The Sangheili became noticeably uncomfortable, his gaze lowering into the fire. "I... apologize for my verbal transgressions," he said quietly. Why else would the... Why else would Tally ask if not to voice her dissent? He was usually not this ignorant, but Rasa'Jeqkogoai was never properly trained in the ways of humans. At least not like the oddball, the Key'esop, with her fraudulent name.

This may be an awkward several weeks...

She had indeed done this before, several times in fact, though not always as successful as she was now. Practice made perfect after all, which she now had plenty of. This was her fourth time venturing out into the wilds of Portal Breach. The first two times had been relatively short, with her returning in the sum of several weeks. However the third time she had been gone for almost over six whole months.

Plenty of time to learn how to make a proper fire.

Speaking of that fire, Tally added a bit more kindling, trying to coax the flames just a little harder and make them just a little bit stronger. Tally welcomed Rasa's efforts to keep the fire shielded from any winds. Their combined efforts very quickly gave them both a strong, steady flame. There. Now they would just have to make sure to keep it fed throughout the night, and that it didn't burn down the grasslands.

What? No, it doesn't bother me at all. She had certainly been called worse than "The" in the past after all. Her question stemmed from simple curiosity. I just curios as to why you put a "the" in front of my name. I mean, I had no idea if maybe I was suppose to do the same for you, or if I was maybe insulting you or not by not calling you the Rasa....

They were a very different species, and the last thing that she wanted to do was insult her friend by not calling him his proper title. Especially since his race seemed to be one extremely devoted to honor.

I mean, you don't have anything to apologize for, you can keep calling me "The" Tally or just Tally. It's whatever you prefer. She elaborated as she began to dig through her bag for something. Success! She managed to find the bag of cured meat strips that she had stuffed in there.

Pulling the bag out she took one for herself and offered another to Rasa to take if he wanted.

Personally, I sort of like how you call me "the" Tally. It was different, and honestly she didn't mind being called that by him. Whatever worked for him.

It did not bother her? Then why did she... "Ah, you were curious," he realized. Yes, Rasa'Jeqkogoai should have seen this before! How could he miss such an obvious detail? The Tally was a different specie than him and thus, she would naturally be inclined to know more about him. It made sense once dissected logically. The Rasa? "HAH!" At this the proud warrior had a hearty, but curt, laugh. "Now that you say such a thing, it does sound awkward and unseemly!" Rasa'Jeqkogoai agreed. Had he always sounded this... foreign? "No, no. We do not put the honorific title before our names in such a way, although I am also quite intrigued as to why you shorten my name into Rasa." To be fair, he had not been called this since his time as a child.

It was... interesting, to say the least. Anyway, it was time to eat and the warrior generously took the strip when offered. "My thanks," he said before tearing into the spartan meal. It may not be much, but it was enough to get them going through their journey. As he chewed the jerky, Rasa'Jeqkogoai had himself some thoughts. "If you like being called the Tally, then I shall call you the Tally," he agreed. The alien will honor this request unto his dying breath if need be.

And while they were on this subject of curiosities and getting to know each other, Rasa'Jeqkogoai decided he had nothing to hide. Honesty was something the solider valued highly. "Do you have any other questions you wish to ask of me, the Tally?" inquired the Sangheili. Maybe she wanted to know more about his people and himself but thought it improper to pry? He, himself, had questions to ask but Rasa'Jeqkogoai would allow the Tally the first honors this time. His queries may take longer to formulate, the alien not entirely keen on human culture or custom. With nothing else to say, the alien simply chewed upon the meat and waited for whatever came his way.

No, it certainly did not bother her, especially not when she had been called much much worse before. She rather liked it actually. She nodded at his revelation, yes she was curious. They were...very different...to say the least. However she had done her best over the course of their relationship not to pry too much. Rasa seemed to be the type to keep mostly to themselves, and Tally wasn't going to ruin their friendship by putting her nose where it didn't belong.

    Still though...if he was offering....

She gave a short bark of a laugh as he commented on her own shortening of his name, now that he mentioned it, what she did to his name was probably weird.

I guess I do it out of habit, same as you. American's just seem to have a thing with shortening names, it's usually only done if the two parties are familiar with one another though. Well..that and I butcher your language remember?

Yes, the last time she had tried to speak his full name she had tripped over it, she just did not have the proper mouth parts for his language.

If you prefer though I can call you by your full name. Rasa'Jeqkagoai.... Rasa'Jaqkogoai... This could take awhile.... She would get it eventually though, probably, if that was what he wanted.

Tally accepted the meat offered to her, offering her own bag of food to Rasa. She wasn't sure if he liked dry fruit, but it was still polite to offer. And...speaking of offering. It really would be okay? If she asked questions? Tally suddenly felt the equivalent of a kid in a candy store.

Uh, okay. What could she ask? Where should she start?

So, what were your people like? Might as well start at the beginning.

"American...?" No, cannot say that Rasa'Jeqkogoai knew very much about the human species at all. In fact, he knew just the bare minimum to get by; and that was how to kill them faster than they could kill himself. "Ah, so... like this human concept of a nickname," he thought aloud. Yes, a name shortened by those familiar with the person. Nickname. This also made sense to the Sangheili, although it will take time for him to appreciate the shortened moniker. And look at the Tally! Butchering his tongue yet again! "Hm, hm!" he chortled mid-chew, finding this amusing. "Better, but you have no faith in the throat. When you speak our way, do not be afraid to sound guttural; animal! Although we are not akin to animals, our language is hearty and strong, like its people." She will get it one day, maybe. One day.

Fruit wasn't something naturally chosen first, but the warrior did not refuse the offering. He took a few pieces out of respect and continued to eat. It was unfortunate that his diet was not as diverse, however. At most Rasa'Jeqkogoai had meats and nuts, but he did give a few handfuls of the latter to the Tally in case she wanted a sample. "What are my people like?" A general question to ask first, but not one unpleasant. Rasa'Jeqkogoai took time to think, his mind sifting through what information the Tally would be most interested in.

He finally found his answer. "My people are strong; warriors," he explained first. "We value honor and glory, the blade and heart. Some may call us zealous and narrow-minded, but others will tell you that no other people than the Sangheili are more loyal and fierce than any other. We pride ourselves on our military might and power, but we are always mindful of the spirits and ancestry wherever we go." Yes, this was an accurate depiction of his people. It was a pity... Rasa'Jeqkogoai was starting to feel a little lonely, saddened. "Our mothers are loving and our fathers are the backbone; our children ever learning of the teachings. Respect is our teacher." Everything Rasa'Jeqkogoai was saying sounded very decorated, but was there a darker side to this painting? Perhaps, as the Sangheili paused for a moment to collect his words before speaking again. "We are not without fault, however. Our pride has led to many a downfall, and our inclination to might over science can prove to be our ultimate undoing one day. I am not like my previous superiors who think most if not all species are inferior to us; I have seen what humans can do, how resilient and strong they are. It saddens me that others could not see the same."

Ah, perhaps she should elaborate a bit more she realized.

Yeah, American, I was from North America, specifically the United States of America. More specifically Boston. At the last word Tally allowed part of her old accent to creep in. It had been so long she had almost forgotten how to use it.

After all, she wasn't in Boston anymore, and four years had all but taken the accent out of her.

And yeah! A nickname, you got it right, and I'll practice on the name. More guttural, but not like an animal. Got it. Tally took another bite of her meat and listened to Rasa in a rapt fashion as he explained his people to her.

They sounded brave, and strong, and very proud. As Rasa admitted, almost to a fault.

And you fought against humans for a really long time. Smooth Tally.

Sorry, that was probably not the best thing to say. Jeez Tally, you think? Move away from the subject of war tally, move away.

Oh hey. Do you remember that when you asked me about my name? How your's means resilience and mine didn't have a meaning? Tally paused to give him a moment to recall it. Well I uh, went looking and I found it. It's um, not very impressive. Not like your's anyway. It means "Dew of God." No, not quite as impressive as Rasa's, but at least it had a meaning.

North America... Rasa'Jeqkogoai vaguely remembered the noun. "Ah, the place made up of many states," he nodded. Curiously, such a nation reminded the Sangheili of home, Sanghelios. His world was delegated by states, of which they were created by a founder, so Rasa'Jeqkogoai felt the Tally's nation familiar to his own. "I am from the state of Jeqkogo," the warrior remarked. "That is why my full name is Rasa'Jeqkogoai. We are named from what state we are from. I find it interesting that you North Americans do not follow such a practice, given that this United States was akin to a puzzle." But he supposed it was logical; the Tally was an alien lifeform to him, after all. Rasa'Jeqkogoai was not as dense as some of his Ship Masters, and he did not share in the belief that all lifeforms beneath the Sangheili should either be eradicated or subjected to their ways.

"It is of no offense to me, Tally," Rasa'Jeqkogoai told her. No, war was brutal, unkind. To talk of it was nothing more to him than to speak of the weather. The soldier of war had to think this way, lest he let his past deeds come back to haunt him. "I have been killing your kind for a time, but not longer than our most capable warriors. Some delight in the sport of hunting humans, and others see it as nothing more than an act of mercy. Myself, however?" Rasa'Jeqkogoai chose to become careful by not insulting his human friend. "I thought of it as nothing more than an order, but when the Great Schism happened, I realized hunting your kind had been in err all along. The Prophets lied to us, and their mongrel Brutes were all too delighted in turning against my brothers. It was a sorry mess." That it was, but the history lesson could be avoided for now. The Tally talked about the meaning of her name, and Rasa'Jeqkogoai pondered the meaning of it with a slight inclination of his oblong head. "Dew of God?" he repeated, mulling the words over. "Hmm, I think it is impressive. Your name is clearly tied to that of this... God. A name of faith, a name of heart. It is good that you are named this, Tally. Dew is the first moisture granted by dawn, a source of life for those willing to wake up and partake in the miracle. Yes, it is good," Rasa'Jeqkogoai nodded.
