    What does 'socialization' mean?

Post by Chell on Wed Jul 25, 2012 6:29 pm

    Time: 4:55 PM
    Date: May 13th

The door to room 127 slowly creaked open, and Chell took the opportunity to poke her head out, glancing up and down the hallway to make sure that the coast was clear. In the four days since she'd been dropped into Portal City, the former test subject had kept largely to herself, and anyone who hadn't been paying close attention might have not known she was there at all. Anti-social as though it may be, she felt like she had enough on her plate as it was, getting adjusted to a new world and the sudden, welcome luxury of having her own space for the first time in her life all at once. As far as she was concerned, making friends and exploring were the very last things on her to-do list, and barring the exception of a sudden catastrophic event, there was nothing she could think of that was worth leaving her room for right now.

Wwwwell... with the exception of mealtime, that is.

Oh god, the food you could come by in this place. Just the thought of it made the woman's mouth water as she stepped out of her room, satisfied that there appeared to be no one around she'd have to interact with. Of all the things that topped her list about living in civilization again, and there were many - sleeping in her own bed was just as comforting as she'd imagined it would be, for instance, and showers were absolutely amazing - eating real, honest to god food had to be number one. Chell wasn't sure if she was just easily impressed after having existed on a diet of potatoes and non-perishables for so long, or if the food at the Inn really was simply that good, but since tentatively trying some bread on her second day there, frequent visits to the restaurant had become an integral part of her daily schedule.

Not that there was much of a schedule, she thought while she slipped quietly down the hallway. Between sleeping, eating, and bathing, she really wasn't doing much at all, save for practicing some writing on the notepads Link had given her. It was rest she felt like she needed though, and despite still wearing her old jumpsuit, she looked significantly cleaner and bright-eyed. It showed in her demeanor too, and there was an eagerness to her step as she neared closer to the restaurant.

Chell wasn't the only one who had decided to venture out in search of some food from the Stock Pot Inn. Whilst Impa was quite the cook and they had a nice amount of food stored in their room, Zelda had found out from Link earlier in the day that the cooks for the Inn had decided to make their version of something incredible, a food item that none of the Hyruleans had even heard of until they had been whisked away to the Breach. It was something that Link had tried once and subsequently introduced Zelda to, something that each of them thought was amazing in its taste as well as its overall simplicity… it was something called a "taco." Upon finding out that the Inn staff had sought to make plenty of them today, the disguised princess was hardly able to wait for her first true chance to venture out and get some. Maybe she could even snag some more for the Link from her time and surprise him since he was off on his own for a bit…

Heading out into the hallway and starting to quickly make her way down the stairs, Sheik saw the chance to test out a slight variation on the Sheikah Vanish skill that she had been working on honing. She couldn't detect the presence of anyone at the bottom of the stairs or anyone coming from either direction downstairs, so she thought that now might be a good chance to try and reappear at the base of the stairs, executing what was in effect a blind move. Not being able to really visually check all of her surroundings but still appearing elsewhere was undoubtedly a crucial skill to have, and if she ever hoped to have the maneuver down to something closer to Impa's level of skill with it, it was worth practicing.

At that, Sheik quickly disappeared from the second floor landing before suddenly reappearing at the base of the stairs. Glancing about and grinning to herself as she realized she had executed the move perfectly, that grin soon faded and her eyes widened when she realized that she had appeared out of nowhere right in front of a woman who was coming from the first floor's residential hallway. The disguised princess, worried that she might have possibly startled the unfamiliar woman (or at the very least had a chance of throwing her off) quickly straightened her posture and nodded a hasty apology to her. "Oh, I'm sorry ma'am! I didn't mean to appear out of nowhere… I didn't know anyone was downstairs at the moment…"

Wow, whatever the Inn had cooked up today, it smelled absolutely fantastic, even from where Chell was standing. Feeling her stomach growl, the former test subject resisted the urge to break into a hunger-fueled jog, just to bridge the gap between herself and the restaurant even faster. Suddenly, without even the slightest warning, someone appeared right in front of her, seemingly out of thin air.

Well, it was a good thing she hadn't started running then.

Biting back a surprised gasp, the woman quickly put on the breaks and took a few steps backwards, glancing over the person to make sure they were alright. Whoever they were, they seemed none the worse for wear despite whatever stunt they had just pulled that had enabled them to just... appear like that. Whatever the case may be, Chell was satisfied that they hadn't been harmed, and didn't seem to be much of a threat to her on top of that, so she allowed herself to relax. Hey, maybe she could even make it into the restaurant without them noticing if she moved fast enough. All hopes of that were dashed as soon as the person did take notice of her, however, and Chell soon found herself met with a somewhat embarrassed and hasty apology.

Mentally resigning herself to the fact that there was no way she was going to get out of this one, the former test subject shrugged and waved it off rather nonchalantly. She was alright, really, she'd just been a little startled was all. No harm done. People performing magic tricks out of nowhere was far from the weirdest thing she'd seen in her brief exploration of the city, after all, and at least they seemed polite. Speaking of which, despite her stomach's protests, she couldn't help but eye the person curiously. Judging from their posture and overall build, she was guessing this person was male, although it was honestly kind of hard to tell from the shawl covering his face, and the multiple bandages he had wrapped around his head. Maybe he really had been hurt. Before she could ask, something on his tunic caught her eye, and she leaned forward slightly to inspect it. It looked to be just a stitching of an eye of some sort, but it seemed so familiar... where had she seen it before?

...Oh, right, hadn't the woman from her first day been wearing something like that? Curiosity winning out over hunger for this round, Chell hastily took out one of the smaller notepads she had been carrying along under her arm and scribbled something down, presenting it to the boy with a questioning look. "Do you know Impa?"

Sheik waited for a few seconds before catching the woman's shrug and nonchalant wave, and only at that moment did she let herself breathe a sigh of relief. Glad that she only seemed to have surprised the woman instead of outright startling her or anything, she soon managed a slight smile, inwardly very grateful for the quick forgiveness she seemed to have been given.

Nodding to show that her acknowledgement of the woman's silent response, Sheik now had a chance to get a better look at who she had suddenly appeared in front of. She didn't recognize the woman, but based on her hair and outfit alone, she almost felt as though she had met them before… at least via a description from Impa. A few days ago, her guardian had mentioned happening upon a woman with dark hair who was wearing an orange jumpsuit… Sheik didn't know much about her, just that the Sheikah had helped the woman to the Stock Pot Inn and that very slight bit about her appearance just in case if she had happened to run into her on her own at all. Now that she had, the disguised princess just hoped that she could still salvage her first impression.

Given the woman's body language and slight curiosity, she seemed to have, and the former test subject soon pulled out a notepad and began writing a message, much in the way that the future Link did with his digiglass. Sheik recalled a brief mention that the woman (Chell, she believed her name was) was in fact mute, but regardless of her friendship with the future Link, this was hardly of any concern to her. Communication extended far beyond spoken words after all.

A moment later, Chell turned the notepad to her and met her with a questioning look, and at catching that look and reading the written question, Sheik simply smiled a bit more and nodded. "Yes, I do. She's actually my guardian." Deciding not to focus too much on what Impa had shared with her about the new woman, she paused for a moment before asking, "I trust you've met her?"

Chell couldn't help grin slightly when the boy confirmed that he did, in fact, know Impa, and mentioned that she was his guardian on top of that. Hey, maybe she'd do okay with this whole 'socialization' thing after all if she could pick up on details like that. Not that it was something she could see herself actively seeking out anytime soon, but it was still a nice little confidence boost. In the midst of her pride though, she couldn't help but wonder about the boy's relation to the Shiekah - it was obvious he was from her world, she could tell that just from his clothing choices alone, but was he family? A friend? Looking him up and down once again, she concluded that he was probably fairly young, although that did little to answer her questions. Still, it wasn't really any of her business in the end, she decided, so she kept her lid on them for now.

When asked if she'd met Impa, the former test subject nodded, pulling out her nodpad to scribble on once again. "I thought that symbol on your chest looked familiar. And I have, she was the one who guided me to this inn a few days ago." A pause, and then she added something else on. "I'm kind of new here." That was probably an understatement, especially considering she'd done nothing but sleep and hover around the restaurant over the past four days. The world was still as new to her as it had ever been, really. She would probably have to start educating herself soon enough... maybe she could try to find something to read, after dinner.

Speaking of which, her stomach decided to make it's wishes known again, much to Chell's dismay, and grumbled rather audibly. Frowning, the woman used her free hand to give her belly a squeeze in the hopes of quieting it, before glancing back to the boy and quickly writing something else down. "Sorry. I was just going to get something to eat." It was a silly thing to apologize for, she knew, but something in her felt inclined to anyway. Maybe it would help her get to the restaurant faster.

Sheik's own smile grew a bit as the woman grinned slightly, and once she nodded to confirm that she had in fact met Impa, the disguised princess waited patiently for what the woman might write next. She did already have her friends from home here, and had become really close friends with the future Link as well, but whether it was Lawrence, Kev, or just now Chell, she did like meeting new people and potentially making new friends.

A couple of moments later, the woman had finished writing, and Sheik perked up a bit to read the presented text. Ah-ha! So it was the Eye of the Sheikah on her tunic that had helped Chell connect her to Impa! She had had a feeling it might be given the way that the woman had been looking over her curiously, although their somewhat similarly styled attire might have also been a clue… still, it was neat to see that the woman had picked up on the Eye of the Sheikah despite having only met Impa a few days ago.

At her added note that she was new here, Sheik nodded and stated, "That's right, it's the Eye of the Sheikah like the one on her armor. It's the symbol of our people, showing insight to the truth. I'm glad she was able to help show you to the inn! It's a pretty nice place, and don't worry about being new… I've only been here for a little more than half a year myself. And the inn really helps you get used to it."

Before she could ask or say anything else, Sheik happened to catch the sound of Chell's stomach. Smiling slightly and giving the her a sympathetic look when she caught her glance, the disguised princess waited again before reading the former test subject's newly written message. Her smile broadening a bit as she shook her head, Sheik added, "That's all right. I was actually headed that way myself… would you mind if I walked there with you?"

Sheik could tell that the woman wasn't exactly social, but she had been friendly enough to stop and converse for a little bit… and maybe being able to meet someone else would help her better adjust to the new world even better. She might not have had the actual Eyes of Truth that Impa did, but the Sheikah in training had enough insight to know to be kind to Chell, but not to try to force her company. Gentle patience seemed to be the best strategy here, and she hoped that it might be good for the woman here, whether they wound up heading on to the dining area together or not.

Post by Chell on Thu Aug 23, 2012 10:54 pm

Ahh, so here was someone else who was still fairly new to this world. Granted, over half a year was a tad bit longer than just four days, but it was somewhat comforting to see the boy seemed to have settled in well for Chell, despite coming from such a vastly different place. Maybe she'd do okay for herself after all. So far she had the whole eating, sleeping, and bathing thing down pat, now it was just a matter of actually living. And possibly meeting people, unfortunately. Speaking of which...

The former test subject bit her lip when the boy asked if he could walk with her to the restaurant, averting her gaze. He seemed nice enough, and the fact that he was friends with Impa was a plus in her books, but she hadn't really planned on this trip being a social outing. Trusting anyone was still a very new concept to her, but would letting the boy join her really do any harm? It was just dinner, after all, and she could easily leave if she decided she was uncomfortable. And besides, the longer she stood there thinking, the longer it would take for her to get her food.

Oh, what the hell. Finally turning back to the boy, she gave him a tiny smile and a nod, before briskly leading the way to the restaurant. It was just about dinnertime, and the smell of fresh food was almost enough to make the woman weak in the knees. Four days of rest after what she had been through still had done little to cure her appetite, apparently. As she approached the stack of plates and utensils, the woman paused, glancing at her new companion. After a moment's consideration, she stepped to the side, mentioning for the boy to go on and dish his food up ahead of her. It was done more out of curiosity than courtesy - after all, if the boy had really lived at the Inn for more than half a year, he was bound to have some favorite dishes by now. Being so new to decent food herself, Chell couldn't help but want to observe ahead of time as he dished up his plate. Maybe he would have some recommendations.

Sheik didn't fail to notice when Chell bit her lip and shifted her gaze to the side for a few moments. She knew that the woman was most likely trying to think this through, but it seemed that her offer of company met the former test subject's natural defenses even more head on than she had thought it might. Whether she accepted or declined the offer was perfectly fine by the disguised princess, but she hoped that she hadn't gone too far by extending it in the first place.

Soon enough though, Chell turned back to her with a small smile and nod, at which point Sheik met her with a nod and grin of her own. Following the woman through to the restaurant, the disguised princess caught a lull in their walk to introduce herself, saying, "By the way, my name is Sheik. It's nice to meet you."

Not expecting the former test subject to reply with her own name until she was ready to (and it was most likely better to give her that chance that to outright use the name that she had learned from Impa… it was far more personal this way, after all), the disguised princess shared the glance that her new companion soon turned to her. At first, Sheik was a little confused that Chell was offering for her to go first… granted, chivalry didn't exactly have defined gender roles to the princess, although she was currently masquerading as a boy and was thus always set to use a bit more of that in addition to common courtesy… and princess or not, she knew her manners but even more that there was a time and place for different levels of them. The biggest conundrum here was that she was set to let the woman go ahead of her since she was both an adult and had been first in line… and she'd hoped to let her go first to add to her apology for having startled her a bit earlier. The more she thought about this simple gesture though, Chell's posture and the look in her eyes seemed to be more out of curiosity that courtesy. Now that made a lot more sense and eased Sheik's mind!

Perhaps she wasn't sure about all of the food items here, or the way that some foods were meant to be enjoyed… or maybe she just wanted to see what Sheik enjoyed herself. Regardless of any of the reasons driving her curiosity, the disguised princess simply smiled and nodded to the woman in understanding, right before shifting ahead of her in the line. Since she had initially planned to get her food to take back to her room, she picked up one of the plates that was easier to balance and began to look over the buffet to see what tacos they had set up. As they usually had when they prepared this type of food, they had the tacos pre-filled with different meats and then additional fillings set up to the side. Feeling her mouth begin to water as she caught sight of the steak tacos, Sheik began to pile a few onto her plate before moving to the fillings section and getting some cheese and such to add to her meal.

"These things are called tacos, and they're really delicious… you just get however many you want and then fill them with whatever you like. I hope you enjoy them,"
stated Sheik, hoping that her demonstration of what to get was coming in handy for Chell thus far.

Post by Chell on Tue Aug 28, 2012 8:48 pm

Ahh, so it was Sheik, was it? The title certainly fit in with the apparent theme of odd names Chell seemed to be encountering, but then again, she was one to talk. Although the former test subject acknowledged this introduction with a nod, she still refrained from giving out her own for now - after all, she still barely knew the boy. Completely different world or not, the last thing she wanted to do was throw all caution into the wind. She hadn't been here quite long enough for that. All the same, the Sheik seemed nothing if not friendly, and she appreciated having a name to put to the partially-shrouded face.

Once the boy seemed to have understood her offer to let him go on ahead, Chell grabbed grabbed the largest plate she could find and strode after her new companion, eyes darting to scan the buffet. There was the usual assortment of smaller items and sides, many of which the woman was eager to get her hands on, but something else grabbed her attention. Set out in a large group was what appeared to be pale, bready tubes, although given the variety of scents she was picking up from them, she assumed there had to be meats or at least seasonings inside. They were really unlike anything she had seen before, and she couldn't help but shoot her companion an inquiring look, hoping maybe he'd have some information as he seemed to keen on getting to them. As Sheik explained the general concept, the former test subject carefully picked up one with a pair of tongs and eyed it thoughtfully. Tacos, huh? She had to admit, she had been trying to avoid meat lately given how rich it was - eating regular meals was still new to her, after all - but the one she was holding looked to be full of chicken, and she couldn't imagine that would hurt her too badly... plus, well, it did smell delicious.

After a moment's consideration, Chell decided to bite the proverbial bullet and took small, curious bite out of the thing, followed by her eyes immediately flying open. Wow, delicious was right. Fueled by her newfound craving, the former test subject made quick work of the taco by stuffing the rest of it in her mouth in two large bites, not even bothering to find a table first. Hey, she was hungry. Once she had finished, she gave Sheik a quick smile and a thumbs up, before placing two more tacos with a side of chopped vegetables on her plate.

Sheik outright grinned when Chell tasted and then readily devoured the first taco she had taken, that grin of hers soon growing a bit once the former test subject flashed her a quick smile and thumbs up to show her approval. Pleased that her new companion seemed to like the food so much, Sheik nodded to her, stating, "I'm glad you like them! They seemed a little strange to me at first, but I actually ate one just like that the first time I tried one. And the best part is that if you get hungry for more, you can always get more of them."

Moving to step away from the main food serving area, Sheik contemplated getting a drink from the very wide selection that was always available in the dining area. In the end, she decided to go ahead and get a cup full of that delicious iced tea that she had become quite fond of, right before thinking of her next conundrum. She did have a plate full of food that she had initially planned to simply take back up to her room, but now she wasn't sure as to whether she should stick to her original plan or enjoy the tacos here, whether by herself or with the woman she had run into. Well, nothing explored meant nothing was to be gained…

"Did you want to take your food back to your room or eat it here? The inn is really great about letting you do either,"
said Sheik, glancing back to Chell. She didn't outright invite the woman to join her at a table for fear that that might sound too forward, so she figured that once again she would let the former test subject dictate the pace here.

Chell nodded at Sheik's response, another tiny smile making it's way to her lips. Strange was right, but she wasn't about to turn down anything that tasted this good. A whole new world of pastries, meats, and just about any dish under the sun had been opened up for her, and she intended on trying everything at least once, while the experience was still new. And speaking of pastries...

As Sheik made his way over to the drinks, Chell came to an abrupt halt, something at the end of the table catching her eye. There, sitting invitingly on a series of plates was what looked to be soft, dark brown triangles, and she knew what they were immediately. This wasn't the first time the woman had seen a slice of cake, as she had taken notice of it being served in the restaurant just a couple of days before, but the sight of it still made something clench in her chest. It was funny how a food she couldn't recall ever tasting could bring back so many memories, none of them good, and it marked the reason why she had gone out of her way to avoid the stuff the first time she had seen it. Now though, as she was slowly starting to settle in and accept that all of this was real, a sneaky flare of rebellion was starting to override the anxiety in her chest, causing her to bite her lip as she fought this new inner battle. She almost wanted...

Suddenly, her companion's voice broke her thoughts, causing her to lose any reservations she might have had. Oh, screw it, she did want this, for no other reason than that she could have it now - because she was free, and there was no one around to deny her. Hastily, she snatched up the cake almost without thinking and turned back to Sheik, feeling inexplicably triumphant and a little light-headed. In regards to his question, she had honestly been intending on heading straight back for her room, but at the rate she was feeling, the former test subject wanted nothing more than to find a place to sit down. Spotting a small, secluded looking table in the corner of the dining area, she pointed towards it with a quick nod and began making her way towards it, figuring the boy would join her if he wanted. Despite her earlier wishes, she suddenly found herself almost wanting the company.

Sheik was glad to see another small smile from the woman. Given what she'd been able to pick up from her, she was still adjusting to things (most likely in more ways than one) and was likely more keen to stick to herself. The disguised princess was outgoing, but she was an introvert at heart, so she could definitely respect that aspect of the woman. Hopefully though, whilst she could seek out her own space here in the city, she wouldn't feel the need to close herself off too much. She wasn't about to mention any of this to her new companion of course, but the thoughts did cross her mind… that was just part of who Zelda was, someone that saw things in others and wished the best for them.

As Chell seemed to contemplate dessert before snatching up a delicious looking slice of came, Sheik herself was still inwardly debating about getting a dessert. Maybe once she'd sat down… and the idea of getting a dessert would give her another reason to take a table and eat here instead of trying to balance her food on the short trip upstairs. That was decided then! But would she have company?

The former test subject soon answered that question for her, when she answered the previous question by indicating a table in the corner of the dining room. Reading the quick nod and responding with an equally quick one of her own, Sheik moved to follow Chell over to the table, soon setting down her plate of tacos and her drink. Once her plate and cup were set, the disguised princess held up her index finger in a "wait just a second" gesture before she quickly jogged back to the serving line, soon grabbing a slice of cake for herself as well as a pair of forks for the two of them. Her task completed, Sheik soon returned to the table and moved to get situated on her side of the booth.

"Here you go," said Sheik, setting one of the forks down by Chell's dessert plate. "I hope the rest of your meal is as good as that first taco was!"

At that, Sheik pulled the white cloth in front of her face down a little more, settling it around her neck so that it would not get in the way whilst she ate. She was still young enough that her facial features were pretty neutral, so it was fairly common for her to go around without the cloth covering the lower part of her face. She often alternated between the two primary ways of wearing it though, especially so that once she got older and had to conceal her features a bit more it wouldn't seem too odd for her to favor the cloth's position around her face. Regardless, she liked the garment and its style, especially since it was easy to contend with when food was involved!

Once she had seated herself at the table, it hadn't taken long for Chell to start tearing into the rest of her meal. The concept of waiting for the other person to sit down before eating was still an entirely foreign one to her, although she did give the boy a glance of acknowledgment when she realized he was indeed going to be joining her. Frankly, she was relieved - having someone else around to focus on would definitely get her mind off of things. The former test subject was admittedly a little confused when her companion immediately ran off after setting his food down, but quickly shrugged it off, already enjoying the taco far too much to really care at all about what anyone else did.

When Sheik returned with forks for both of them, however, the woman paused, blinking. Her silverware... she had been so caught up in whether or not to get the cake that she had completely forgotten about it - plus, honestly, it still felt weird to eat with anything other than her hands. It would definitely be necessary for the cake though, and she gave the boy a much warmer smile of gratitude as she continued on with her meal. She was actually a little surprised he had even noticed, but it felt nice to be considered, at any rate.

Once she had downed the rest of her second taco, Chell allowed herself to slow down a bit, not wanting to end up in bed with an upset stomach later like the first time she'd eaten here. Now that food wasn't taking up the majority of her thoughts, the woman found herself curiously regarding Sheik, who had apparently revealed the rest of his face while she had been eating. Having gotten a better look at him now, she felt she could say with certainty that he was definitely quite a bit younger than she was, although he certainly looked capable enough for his age. Then again, with someone like Impa as his guardian, she supposed that was just a given. Finding herself wondering again about the relationship between the two, Chell carefully scribbled something down on her notepad before presenting it to the boy. She wasn't sure why, but she felt strangely obligated to break the silence that seem to have come over the table. "So, how long have you known Impa?

Whilst Zelda had learned proper manners both relevant for the royal court and more casual settings (whether she was meant to be Princess Zelda or her alias Sheik), she was not exactly one to get hung up over them. Far from it in fact… whilst the tomboy did have something of a subconscious elegant demeanor, that mainly manifested when she was in a more formal setting and was typically set to be just a kind one no matter where she was, and she greatly preferred casual scenarios over anything that she felt was too formal. Formal things could be great, but if they were strict for too long, then it got too dull for the disguised princess' liking. As such, she did not mind at all that Chell had started to eat more of her food whilst she herself had dashed to get forks for the two of them. If nothing else, the woman was clearly very hungry, and Sheik was not about to ask her to wait on her to eat, especially since they had not initially planned eating together.

The disguised princess was just happy to see that the former test subject was up for some company after all (and thus potentially opening up some around her settling in this new world), and that she was enjoying the tacos that she had got to eat. Whilst Sheik certainly loved every dish that Impa made for her, the inn staff always did an amazing job. She hadn't had a meal here yet that she didn't like, and whilst there were some that she preferred over others, she had never had a bad one. It was still amazing to her that everything here was free of charge… and even more that, one of her closest friends ran the inn!

Chell was not the only one who was accustomed to eating things with her hands… most Hyrulean cuisine was meant to be eaten with ones' hands, save those dishes where cutlery was essential (such as a nice Lon Lon Steak), so Sheik was quite set to eat just about any dish there was with her bare hands. She nodded to the woman and returned her thankful smile with a warm one of her own, right before getting set to dive into her own plate of delectable tacos.

The disguised princess made short work of her first two tacos (albeit not with quite the same speed that the former test subject had enjoyed her own), finishing the second one by the time that Chell had finished carefully writing something down in her notebook. Once the text was presented to her, Sheik glanced to the woman, stating, "I've actually known her about as long as I've been alive. She truly took over as my guardian a couple of years ago, but she's always been like a mother to me."

Even though Impa had been Zelda's guardian ever since the princess was first born, she truly had picked up those duties even more than her own attendant and teacher sets a couple of years ago. Luckily for Sheik, it was easy to tell the truth regardless of which guise she was currently in… and whilst she did have to watch some phrasing whether she was the Princess of Hyrule or the Sheikah in training, it was nice to never have to use too many half truths.

At her companion's response, Chell gave a steady nod, slowly setting her notepad back down on the table. For whatever reason, she couldn't really say she was surprised they had known each other for that long - despite having only just met the boy, even she could see the similarities between the two, and not just in how they dressed. There had been a sort of considerate friendliness in how they had both approached her, kindness without being nosey or in her face about it. Considering she was still trying her best to be cautious around people, it was something the former test subject greatly appreciated.

All the same though, she couldn't help but feel a touch envious of the two of them, mainly because she couldn't even recall having had anyone similar in her life. Ever. She couldn't remember any parents, guardians, friends, family - life before Aperture was all a complete haze to her, and for the first time, it struck her that she was probably in the minority here. Granted, the woman hadn't exactly met many people yet, but she had to assume most of them had somebody in their lives, right? Or at the very least lives to remember. It was a surreal thought to her, one she preferred not to dwell on, although the fact that it was probably a good thing she couldn't remember didn't slip by her - it would have just made transitioning here that much harder. At the same time, she hoped she wouldn't run into too many people who took it for granted. Turning her attention back to her notepad, she wrote Sheik one more quick note: "You're very lucky."

With that out of the way, Chell set back to nibbling on her third taco of the day, brows furrowed together in thought. Truth be told, she wasn't really sure how to continue the conversation from here, not without getting too personal straight off the bat anyway. She was clearly more rusty when it came to socialization than she thought.. solving tests and interacting with the few sentient beings she had met along the way at a base level was one thing, but small talk? Whoooole other ballgame. And while she didn't exactly feel bad about it, she didn't want the boy to feel too awkward on her account. After all, he didn't even know her name yet. Deciding this was as good of a starting off point as any - and besides, she would have to start stepping out of her comfort zone at some point - the woman used her free hand to write something else down before presenting it to her companion. "I'm Chell, by the way." A pause, and then a quick add-on. "Hi."
