    Looking For a Decent Bed

Well. This was now or never.

The door to the Stock Pot Inn slowly creaked open, followed shortly after by a dark haired, messy looking head cautiously poking it's way through the opening. Chell's sharp eyes scanned the interior of the of the cozy, harmless little building with the look of upmost suspicion, looking for all the world like one false move from her would trigger a death trap. Impa had probably more than proven herself to be a trusty guide at this point, and she'd already sung the praises of the inn during their walk over, but the former test subject knew better than to get too comfortable with people, and her surroundings. In her personal experience, the moment you let that feeling of false security cloud your judgment was the moment you got yourself shot in the foot - both metaphorically AND literally speaking. The inn wasn't setting off any alarm bells for her so far though, and with a deep breath, the woman let herself inside, absentmindedly holding the door open for Impa as well.

Once both she and her companion were all the way inside, Chell stepped forward, allowing herself to take in the atmosphere of the place now that she sure the walls weren't about to start closing in on her. It was... WARM was the word she'd use to describe it, warm and quiet, the sense of general tranquility causing the woman to relax even more as she studied it. Save for it's obvious advancement in technology and the fact that it was, well, actually inhabited, it reminded the former test subject of how she'd often imagined the abandoned old houses she'd frequently taken refuge in during her time on the surface to look, at least before they'd fallen victim to the elements. Generally, anything with a roof would satisfy her, but this was quite a bit better than she'd been expecting, even taking Impa's praise into consideration. And all of this was free? The woman paused a moment to run a finger along the polished wood of the reception desk, inwardly admiring how smooth it was to the touch. Yes... she could definitely get used to this.

Glancing upwards though, she frowned, noticing the apparent lack of anybody behind the desk. Chell couldn't really recall ever having stayed at a place like this, but something told her she was supposed to talk to SOMEBODY before she got her room. Taking notice of the small golden bell sitting a couple of feet away, the former test subject turned to raise an eyebrow at Impa before deciding that ringing it seemed to be her only option here. So, with a shrug she leaned forward and reached for the bell, giving it a few good taps with her hand.

Impa let the woman enter the Stock Pot Inn first, figuring that that measure of control would help the wary woman feel a bit more at ease about checking out a new location. After a few moments' hesitation from the former test subject, no doubt scanning the inn's lobby to see if it was safe by her measure, the Sheikah followed her inside, hoping that her companion would be able to settle her nerves relatively soon.

The interior of the Stock Pot Inn was indeed very warm and welcoming, and from what Impa had heard from the Link from her time, it was just as inviting as its counterpart back in Termina was, if not larger and peppered with a bit more technology. Hopefully, both its cozy setting as well as lovely accommodations would be appealing to the woman she'd led here.

As the duo neared the reception desk, Impa glanced about and noted that Link and his three fairies were not in the immediate area, but at least the young boy seemed to be back in his office. The Sheikah was ready to call for the lad, but the other woman's glancing at the bell before raising an eyebrow to her had her thinking she might let the bell do the summoning for them. After all, this would eliminate the risk of any of the fairies' excitement at seeing Impa catching the former test subject too off guard.

Nodding the woman, the Sage of Shadow then turned to look towards the office, patiently waiting for Link and any combination of Leaf, Neri, and Ciela to arrive. New resident in tow or not, it was definitely going to be nice to see her friends this afternoon.

"Ping!" "Ping!" "Ping!" all three of Link's fairies chimed and all three abandonned what they were doing to peek through the blinds of the office door. Link himself, took his time and pushed away from his desk before strolling up at joining them.

"Impa is at the door!" "There's lady with her!" "Sheik isn't with her..."

They turned in well rehearsed timing to look at the small innkeeper who smiled up at them, laughed and moved to open the door.

    "I'm watching T.V., I can't go!" Leaf immediately declared.
"I'm organising the staff timetables," said Ciela. Interesting how they'd readily drop everything they were doing to nosy through the blinds but just as quickly excused themselves back to work once their curiousity had be sated.

"I'm sorting mail, I'll go with you!" Neri quickly volunteered, zipping through the small open gap in the door before anybody could stop her. Link's smile quirked up into a knowing smirk. Neri, we all know you don't like sorting mail. For a Spirit of Wisdom, you're not very subtle at all in that aspect.

Link followed the fairy out the door, waving at the newcomer first then Impa.

    "Hello, Impa. Hello, Miss,"
    Neri greeted. "Is something wrong?"

Chell, in the very short time she'd been a part of this world, had seen a lot of strange things. As distracted and overwhelmed as she had been whilst traveling the streets of Portal City, she couldn't help but at least glance at some of the people she'd passed, only to find that many of these "people" were distinctly non-human. Creatures she couldn't have identified even if she tried, humanoids dressed from time periods she couldn't place, much like Impa - she even thought she'd seen a robot or two, although in that case, she sorely hoped she had misidentified. The point was, the former test subject had come to the conclusion very early on that if she was going to make a life for herself in this place, she would simply have to get used to being surprised on a daily basis.

And yet, even she had to admit, a talking blue orb with wings? ...Definitely up there, in terms of her own rapidly changing perception of oddness. At least it didn't have an accent.

The woman shook her head at the fairy's question, choosing to ignore the fact that she just spent a good moment staring at it rather bewilderedly. No, nothing was wrong, not really - getting past how new everything was would be just another challenge she'd have to face. On the topic of challenges though, she quickly realized that once again, communication was going to be a problem here. With no voice, and no other means of making her wishes clear besides frantic hand flailing, Chell had to begrudgingly admit to herself that she would have to ask for help... again. Glancing between the fairy and the boy in front of her, the woman bit her lip and turned to Impa, casting the Sheikah a pleading look before tapping the side of her throat. Hopefully her companion would be able to articulate her problem better than she could.

Impa couldn't help but laugh silently as she picked up the muffled voices of Link's three fairies and just what they had to say… the three of them certainly saw to it that nothing was ever boring around the end, and they were certainly great companions for her young friend. They might not have been his actual family, but the same as how she was grateful for the bond that she, Zelda, and Link had formed with him in this world, she was glad that the Hero of Winds had been able to reunite with his three fairy friends here as well.

As Link and Neri came out to the front desk, Impa returned Link's wave, smiling to both him and the blue fairy. At Neri's greeting, the Sheikah glanced to the woman whom she had brought to the inn, waiting to catch her nonverbal response before potentially stepping in to help convey her wishes to the young innkeeper. As the former test subject shook her head in reply to Neri's question, Impa found herself hoping that the woman's impending discovery of what she had in common with Link would help ease some of her trepidation in this new situation. Even before the woman glanced to her, her eyes beseeching as she tapped the side of her through, the Sage of Shadow had rather expected her silent request, and she soon nodded to help ease her mind somewhat.

"Everything is all right, but my new companion here is interested in a room," stated Impa, turning to Link and Neri. A moment later, the Sheikah tilted her head ever so slightly towards the woman next to her, subtly indicating her as she added, "Also, Link… would you happen to have a spare notepad and pen?"

Why wasn't she talking? Oh dear, biting her lip. There must be something wrong indeed. Neri and Link directed their gaze to Impa in hope that the Sheikah's face could provide some clue as to what was wrong since the other woman seemed unwilling to speak. Of course, the moment both fairy and boy took their eyes off the woman, was the very second they did a doubletake and outright stared at the lady as she mimed something regarding her....throat?

    Was she...did she just...is she...

Link's mouth opened as if he wanted to say something then closed, then opened again. If there was ever a charades competition to guess a goldfish then Link would had won first prize with his impression. Slowly he took out what looke dlike a pane of glass and started writing on it with his fingertips, leaving green text on its surface.

    "Oh a room,"
said Neri in response to Impa's words but the fairy really wasn't paying that much attention either. "Link, notepad and pen...LINK! That's rude! Rewrite that message!"

But it was too late, Link had already flipped his digiglass over and showing his words to the young woman. "Can you not speak?"

Link smiled sheepishly up at Neri, Impa and the quiet lady then rummaged through the drawers and pulled out a stack of notepads and handful of pens, pushing them towards the woman. Take it, please. Take them all! Take all you need! Was pretty much what his face and actions showed.

Ahh, good, it seemed Impa knew the drill already. Chell gave the Sheikah a grateful nod as she finished relaying her requests, taking a mental note to find a way to repay her later - as much as she hated having to ask for help, she considered herself lucky to be within the company of someone so willing to give it. The request for the pen and notepad admittedly took her by surprise, though, and she carefully set the Companion Cube down on the floor in preparation for what was to come. It wasn't that she doubted her ability to write - like most things she knew, she had always assumed it was still ingrained within her somewhere, like an artifact from her past life. It was just... it had been so long...

Turning back to the counter, the former test subject frowned when she saw there had been no response to Impa's request - in fact, there hadn't been any response at all, as the innkeeper just stood there, gaping at her. Was there something wrong? Or were requests for pens and pads of paper just that uncommon in this world? Confused, she stole a glance back at her companion, only to find no indication on her face that anything was amiss. The situation only continued to confuse her further when the innkeeper pulled out what looked to be glass and began writing on it with his finger, raising a whole other mess of questions. Why was he even bothering? Couldn't he just talk to her like everyone else? Now beginning to reach a point of frustration, she leaned over the desk, raising an eyebrow..

And then he revealed what he'd written to her, and everything fell neatly into place.

    ...Oh.

Now it was Chell's turn to stare, face the perfect picture of surprise, and a funny sort of awe. So this was why Impa had skirted around discussing her inability to speak, it all made perfect sense now. In fact, she was so uncharacteristically taken aback that she nearly huffed out a laugh when the boy started practically drowning her in notepads. She couldn't say that she didn't appreciate his generosity, but she wasn't quite sure she had enough arms to justify all those pens... regardless, she picked one up, and took in a deep, calming breath, trying to ignore the somewhat unfamiliar sensation of nervousness as she tried to figure out what to say for her first attempt at verbal communication. This was completely new territory for her, but true to her nature, she was determined to get the hang out of it come hell or high water.

Finally, slowly, she began writing, brows furrowed in complete concentration. "No, I can't. I'm sorry." And then, because even though she already knew the answer, she felt strangely compelled to ask: "You?" It was broken and her handwriting was slightly shakey, but it was readable, at the very least. That was good enough for her. Deciding to save figuring out her accommodations for later, she hesitantly turned her message around to the innkeeper, and waited for his response.

Impa returned Link's sheepish smile with a soft one of her own, laughing silently as the lad moved to fetch a large supply of notepads and pens for her companion. As the former test subject read Link's message and let everything that his written words entailed fully sink in, Impa turned to the Spirit of Wisdom and stated, "It's all right, Neri."

And indeed it most certainly appeared to be all right, possibly even more than she herself might have guessed. As the Sheikah glanced back to her companion, she saw her own look of dawning comprehension, followed by what was almost a laugh as the Hero of the Winds fetched enough notepads and pens to last the former test subject for a very, very long time. The mere action of picking up a pen seemed to be yet another big step for her, but as the woman had been able to comprehend words and signs as well as communicate in lieu of them, her ability to write seemed to be in tact. Granted, whether it had been a long time since she had last written anything or if she simply wasn't sure of what to say first, Impa was soon able to pick up a sense of very slight nervousness emanating from her. A much stronger sense of determination pushed through though, and after a steady pause, the woman began to write.

Impa had got a glance of both messages before the former test subject revealed her response and question to Link, and she soon turned back to the boy. Hopefully this conversation would prove quite beneficial for her friend as well as her newer companion. If nothing else, discovering that she wasn't the only mute around was bound to help the former test subject better adapt to the often strange world of the Breach.

Link lent further and further forward as he anticipated the woman's written words. There was a moment in the waiting that he worried, fretted and feared that she didn't know how to write but that was quickly quashed as the pen started moving. The boy sat back in relief and even his fairy relaxed a millimetre lower in the air as she too echoed his feelings.

    Chell wrote:"No, I can't. I'm sorry. You?"

He really should had smiled sympathetically at the woman but really and honestly, he couldn't. Instead looked up at the lady with his eyes wide and sparkling like he just discovered some unknown and rare treasure. He gave a small chuckle then a louder bark of laughter before waving his hand and shaking shaking his head in answer to her question.

"Link can make sounds - if his laughing wasn't obvious enough," Neri explained. "But he can't talk. We don't know why but Ciela said she wasn't surprised if there's something wrong with him since he rolls into things so much."

At which Link gave the fairy a disapproving stare and waved the matter aside. Ciela was always blunt with her words after all.

"Do you have a floor preference?" was Link's new message. He flipped it round to be read then recieved a lightbulb moment and hastily turned it back around to add, "I'm sorry, I'm called Link. And you are?"

Aaaaand now the boy was laughing at her. Chell couldn't exactly say she was surprised, as her last attempts at verbal communication could have been eons ago for all she knew, but it was still enough to draw a disapproving frown out of her. Her annoyance was quickly forgotten, however, as the fairy next to him explained things. It was interesting to her that he could laugh so audibly but not speak, although considering she had managed a few brief, tiny sounds of her own before, maybe it wasn't so strange after all. Either way, this revelation caused her to feel an odd kinship towards the innkeeper, and she gave the boy and his fairy a nod in response, taking care not to smirk at the fairy's jab.

Once this was settled, the former test subject observed as the boy wrote down one message, before quickly backtracking and introducing himself. Ahh, so he went by Link then... taking the time to remember the names of the people she met was going to be yet another thing she'd have to get the hang of, especially when thus far they had proved to be so unusual - as far as her knowledge went, anyway - but she figured she could work on it.

The request for her name was what made her uncomfortable, and a sharp eyed onlooker might be able to detect that slight hesitation in her movements again as she leaned over her notepad. It wasn't that she was afraid or ashamed of her name, it was just that... well, to be frank, she was a bit possessive of it. In her time as a test subject, she had never given her name to anyone, not once, and as far as she knew neither of her captors had ever known it either. It was, much like her thoughts, the one thing she had always clung to, that one shred of humanity that reminded her that she had been, and was something more than a nameless lab rat. Still, she once again reminded herself that she was no longer a part of the enrichment center, and if she was going to settle down in this world, then this was something she was just going to have to get over.

Pressing her lips together in a thin line, the woman eventually admitted defeat, and reluctantly wrote down the one name she had. "Chell." Once she had shown this to Link, she remembered his previous question, and quickly added in her response. "And the first or second floor would be preferred, thanks." Not that she exactly had a problem with any of the others, but she had seen how high up they were coming into the inn, and she was not going to chance waking up to her room being ripped off it's hinges again, thank you very much.

Impa smiled a bit more at Link's awestruck reaction once he realized that the woman before him was not able to speak either. His subsequent amusement and Neri's explanation soon led to her own bit of silent laughter… oh Ciela. The Spirit of Courage certainly had more in common with Tatl than any of them had initially realized, that much was certain, and all four of the fairies that were usually at the Stock Pot Inn definitely ensured that there was never a dull moment.

As Link inquired about her companion's name, Impa found her curiosity from the park fully piqued again. She had respected that the woman had not wanted to share her name earlier, and had of course decided not to inquire about it regardless of her inability to speak, but she had still be rather interested to learn what it was. If nothing else, aside from it being good for Link's records with the inn, it would help with addressing her in the future. At the question of the woman's name, the Sheikah was able to pick up the way that she had tensed somewhat, even before the hesitation in her movements appeared. It was very slight, but given Impa's Eyes of Truth, she was able to see through it even without focusing that ability.

Even though it made sense that the woman might want to hold onto her name for herself, regardless of the Sage of Shadow not knowing her background, she hoped that having to share it would be one more good step for her now that she was in this strange, new world. As the woman wrote her name, Impa glanced over and caught sight of it before she flipped it back around and added in her floor preference… Chell. It was a short, simple name, and it definitely suited its owner perfectly. The Sheikah smiled imperceptibly at having finally learned it, but did not say anything just yet as her companion turned her expanded message back to Link. Still, she was rather pleased that she now had a proper way to address the woman, instead of having to skirt about names or rely solely on exclamations that might have made Navi proud.

"Chell," read Neri aloud and Link mouthed then blinked and looked up at the fairy. "What?"

Link mouthed the lady's name wordlessly again. "Eh?"

The boy frowned then mouthed it once again, very slowly and from the way his teeth were together at the start of the name, the fairy finally recognised the problem. "Shell? But it's a 'C' so it must be pronounced 'Ch-ell', right? Sort of like 'cello' but with an 'el' sound."

The two stared at one another then in perfect unison, turned to Impa like a children wanting a parent to settle an argument. Wait, no, why were they looking to Impa when the owner of the name was right there? FWIP, and their heads turned again, eyes settling on Chell's face and waiting to see who will emerge triumphant in this matter.

"Is it pronounced Shell as in seashell or is it pronounced like Cello but without the O?" asked Neri before realising that this discussion didn't shouldn't matter to Link since he was hardly going to said the woman's name aloud at any point in the present and future. Though Neri guessed it'll make it easier for the boy to recognise who people were referring to when they say the name. Trust Link to automatically go for the more seaside/ocean related way of pronoucing the name!

Meanwhile, Link dug through his drawers and pulled out a cardkey for room 127. He placed it on the table with a new note beside it. "If you show the restaurant staff the cardkey, you can get free meals there."

Okay, Chell had to admit, hearing her name actually spoken for the first time since she could remember came very, very close to putting a smile on her face, even in spite of her earlier reservations about giving it out. She still wasn't planning on throwing it out to just anyone, admittedly, but for now? This was nice. Very nice. The pair in front of her seemed to be having more of a struggle with it, however, and she watched with a touch of amusement as they puzzled over the correct pronunciation of the name. As much as she hated to break it to Link, the fairy was the one in the right here, although she supposed it was an easy enough mistake to make. Pointing to Neri, the woman nodded before exhaling to produce a hard "ch!" sound, and then pointing to the latter half of her name on the notepad. She repeated this demonstration one more time for good measure, and somewhere at the back of her mind, she got the feeling she was going to be doing this a lot in the future.

Once that was cleared up, Chell nodded again and picked up her new cardkey, inwardly savoring that tiny swell of triumph she felt at having made it through yet another test this new world had presented to her. The mention of free meals was almost enough to cause her to make a beeline for wherever the restaurant was right then and there, but she knew there was one more thing she had to do to complete this little ritual - and besides, all in good time. Turning her attention back to her notepad, she wrote slowly, making sure to choose her words carefully before presenting it to the boy and his fairy. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you both - it was nice meeting you two." And she really did mean that.

Satisfied, Chell grabbed a few more notepads scattered across the desk for safekeeping and hoisted the Companion Cube up under her arm again, before turning and somewhat sheepishly motioning for Impa to lead the way. While she was sure she'd figure out where to go eventually, she really didn't feel like making a show of wandering aimlessly through the inn, and the Shiekah deserved to be thanked privately for all she'd done as far as the former test subject was concerned, anyway.

Impa smiled a bit as Neri pondered how to pronounced her companion's name and soon confirmed from Chell herself that her own guess regarding the proper way to say her name had been the correct one. She nodded at that, also inwardly very glad to see that the woman had come close to a smile of her own. The Sheikah watched from the side as Chell thanked Link and Neri, inwardly preparing herself to either continue off on her own way in case if the former test subject was set to continue to her newly acquired room all by herself. After all, since she had had quite the day already, Impa imagined that she probably wanted to take some more time to get settled and adjusted to everything.

"Thank you, Link and Neri," said Impa nodding to the duo as Chell began to collect some more notepads. She was just about to prepare to say her goodbyes to her companion for the time being and then possibly come back to visit her two friends after she had taken care of some matters back in her own room, but that was when the Sheikah turned and caught sight of the former test subject's sheepish motioning to her. Her smile growing slightly, Impa nodded to her before glancing back to Link and Neri, waving to them and stating, "I shall see you both later. Until then, take care."

At that, the Sage of Shadow gestured for Chell to follow her down the adjacent hallway that was past the main entrance of the lobby. Impa made sure not to walk too fast so that the former test subject could fully get a feel for the inn's lowermost hallway, and in short order, she had led the way to what was now her companion's new room, number 127. Motioning to the number on the door, Impa turned to Chell, saying, "Here you are, Chell. I hope that you enjoy the inn, and if you ever need anything, I am up in room 421."

She waited before adding anything else, wanting to give her companion enough time to respond to that statement without having to write out too many responses at once, and of course just in case if she was needed for anything else. Regardless, Impa was very pleased that she had been able to help the newly arrived woman find her way in the city. Hopefully the transition would be an easy one for her, and if nothing else, at least she already had some contacts due to their chance encounter.

Chell, characteristically silent, followed Impa as she led the way towards one of the halls, inwardly finding herself appreciative that the Shiekah didn't appear to be rushed. Familiarizing herself with the general layout of the inn was crucial, and was definitely the first thing on her to-do list once she got fully settled in, although she could see now that the basic design of the place was really quite simple. Nothing like the complicated, dimly lit hallways and groaning catwalks she had gotten used to traversing, really. In no time at all, the pair reached the doorway with the keycard's assigned number, and the former test subject set her companion cube down as her guide exchanged her own room number.

Room 421... she would have to remember that, even if she couldn't imagine what kind of situation would be enough to drive her all the way up to the fourth floor. Still, it was good information to have, and although Chell was going to remain guarded, even she couldn't deny what a help the Shiekah had been to her. Bracing one of her notepads against the wall, she furrowed her brow as she concentrated on writing another message, before turning and presenting it to her companion. "Understood. I really can't thank you enough for everything you've done for me today." A pause, and then another message, this one revealed somewhat cautiously. "If there's anything I need to do to repay you, just let me know."
