    Prelude to a Quest

Post by Kev on Wed May 16, 2012 12:35 am

    Time: 2:24 P.M.
    Date: 5/14/2012

The colorful sheep in the field were eating grass, like always. Sheep weren't hard to satisfy after all. Keep them alive, and fed, and you were set. Llama and Biddy had their eyes on the wooley creatures, no wolves or the like would snatch them up, not when they were here! Things out in the grasslands were very calm and nice, sun shining, clouds in the sky, and no sign of the chaos from last month.

Things were just as quiet inside the cottage, but definitely not calm. Kev was sprawled on the couch, eyes on the ceiling of his home, and a sleeping cat on his lap. One hand was on the cat, stroking the soft fur, the other, clasped on a necklace, specifically the moon pendant attached to it.

It felt as if he had just gotten her back...Leslie had been gone so long on her trip to space, and she had come back. Time went by so fast, and now she was gone again. And this time, Ophelia went with her. At least this time they didn't go to space...this time, as Leslie had told him in a letter, she and the young girl had to do faerie stuff. He understood. And Leslie was not someone who had to be with Kev all the time or something, if she wanted her own adventures and fun, or duties, she could go.

But..so many people had left this past year. Hell, this past year had been so full of...THINGS. Just last month had been murder on his emotions. The idea of Leslie and Ophelia never returning was heavy on his mind. She had to return. She would never leave him alone like that. Never! Except he had thought the same thing about Arius. Zippy probably thought the same about Barry, and Vlad to Amber, Jana to Phantom, Ttone to Vlad, and anyone who had cared to Rhys. Lately, people were dying. They were leaving. And the prospect of Leslie, his Keptoya, and Ophelia, a girl he loved like a daughter who you were scared would one day drown you, leaving him forever...

He shuddered and cuddled the cat closer to him. "You'll never leave me, right Shally? And you too, Percy, Oscar, and Zeke?" The two dogs and the brainbot lifted their heads at hearing their names, coming to their master and sniffing his hands, begging for pets. He obliged. "Of course not..." But as much as he loved his pets, there was still a void. She was still gone. They both were. And he did not know for sure when she would be back...and it scared him.

    To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
    Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
    Cut me into little pieces
    Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
    Why did he desert me
    In my hour of need
    I truly am indeed
    Alone again, naturally....

Meanwhile, out in the grasslands just across the edge of Lover's Meadow, both Impa and Zelda were making their way through the verdant fields. The weather had been absolutely perfect for having a day out and about, especially for enjoying a nice walk and training session through the grasslands. Zelda had come a long way in her Sheikah training, possibly even getting a little ahead of where she had been in the original run of the timeline that Impa had experienced; but the disguised princess was, as ever, always eager to learn more.

As for Impa herself, she was thrilled to be able to teach her charge even more than what she had previously as well as what she planned on adding to that once time had been reset. More than that, she was glad that Zelda was able to grow up with two of her closest friends and get to experience nothing but the best as both herself and her Sheikah alter-ego. The princess had been a tomboy effectively since day one, and even though she had had the freedom to express that back in Hyrule even around proper society, it was nice that she had even more of that here. Whilst she probably could have gotten away with revealing her true identity more openly early on, none of the Hyruleans here wanted to run the risk of Ganondorf arriving from any timeline and trying to seek her out as a source of the Triforce of Wisdom… worse yet, they didn't want to chance Vaati attempting any nefarious plans of his own. Keeping her identity a closely guarded secret would help protect her as well as everyone else that knew her, even though Vaati seemed oblivious on the matter and appeared to be at least currently disinterested in pursuing any of his schemes from their own worlds. Even with the magician's having been kept out of the loop past his palace lately, the chances of the Gerudo King arriving were extraordinarily slim. However, stranger things had happened on the Breach and were bound to, so for now, it was best to play it safe, even with her guardian there to watch after her.

Even with all of that though, it was a nice relief to not have to keep an eye out for Ganondorf and his influence around the Breach. Vaati might have been there, but at least he and Shadow Link were benign… most of the time.

As Impa and Zelda crested the next hill, they stopped to get a great view of this span of the land before them. This area was so similar to Hyrule Field and yet so different, and the mixture of familiar and unfamiliar traits just made it all that much more exciting to explore. Turning to her charge, the Sage of Shadow smiled and asked, "Well then, do you like this location for the next round of training?"

"Yeah... it's perfect!" exclaimed Zelda, grinning as she took in the full sights of the cottage in the distance and the sprawling grassy fields all around them.

"Excellent. Now then... you have likely noticed that since our trials last month, both of us as well as both Link and Link have regained more of our true power. None of us are back to our full level yet, but we are definitely much closer to it now. Not only does that mean that our powers have begun to recover, some of our abilities have also been restored."

"You mean... I can start to use some of my sealed abilities again?" Zelda's red eyes were wide with excitement. She had felt that some of her power had since been restored, more permanently than the temporary boosts that the Triforce of Wisdom had given her, but the idea of being able to better utilize it still had her feeling rather happy. She might have still been behind her friends given when she had arrived here, but she was determined to do her best to work her way back up to her true power.

"That's correct," replied Impa, nodding to the disguised princess. "Now, we could cover Din's Fire and see what you have regained of that, but would you like to try one of your other skills out first?"

"Yes... I think I know which one you're talking about," said Zelda, smiling to Impa. Upon focusing more inwardly, the disguised princess was able to feel a familiar warmth within herself... an innate ability of hers that she had honed into a powerful skill, and it was one that she was now able to call upon again. She did not usually use it as Sheik, but whether she was passing as a Hylian or a Sheikah, she knew it was a general spell that either race could learn.

Impa simply nodded to her charge, returning her smile. She knew that Zelda had thought of the ability, one that she herself had helped her work her way towards perfecting, and one that truly defined the Princess of Hyrule. At that, she turned her gaze to a distant tree, one still on this side of the grasslands, keeping her own sights focused on it.

Feeling a little more excited at this, Zelda looked to the tree as well. It might have been a skill that was always hers, but she was still very happy to be able to better access it again. Taking a deep breath, she held out her left hand as if she was holding a bow, right before bringing her right hand up to a spot just behind that. Focusing even more as she exhaled, a faint glow emitted from her hands before forming into the shape of a bow of light. Once she had a good grip on the bow that had magically appeared, she slowly pulled her right hand back, causing a light arrow to appear, notched on the bow and ready to be released.

Her target was clear, so Zelda took careful aim just before opening her right hand, letting the light arrow fly right towards the tree, hitting its mark directly in its center. The bow disappeared as she dropped her hands, but the smile on her face was not going to fade for quite a while. The disguised princess had just shot her first light arrow in a very long time, and she was thrilled to discover that her skill with it had not waned.

Situated between the cottage and the river behind the cottage was where the sheep were presently. But even from this position, Biddy caught the sound of others. However, because it didn't sound too close, Biddy returned her attention to the sheep.

Inside the house, Oscar and Percy had heard the other people in the grasslands as well. However, unlike Biddy who was specifically trained, these dogs were lap dogs, so instead of ignoring it, the two of them ran to the door and barked at the 'intruders'. Zeke was still enjoying his daily pets from Kev, who tilted his head at the actions of the dogs. Shally opened her eyes briefly and gracefully leaped off her master and into the kitchen.

"What is it boys?" Hopefully not a priests...ever since the kidnapping, Kev had been a lot more....cautious around them. And if another one was at his house, he wasn't letting that person in. Not at all! Once bitten, twice shy, as the saying goes.

He stood up and walked to the window, peeking out cautiously at first. Zeke followed, 'bowg'ing along the way and nuzzling at Kev's arms, feeling that his master wasn't in his usual cheery mood. Seeing that no one was at the door, Kev's eyes drifted instead to something a good distance away. Two figures, one small, the other taller. He narrowed his eyes to see them better, and once he did, he instantly recognized them.

"Impa! And Sheik!" Being alone in his cottage with nothing but his pets and his thoughts left Kev pretty eager to interact with his friends. But at the same time, he didn't want to overload them. Everyone still seemed to be dealing with what happened last month, and honestly, so was he, but he didn't want to be a downer. And besides..he didn't feel like he could walk to the Sanctuary. He felt overwhelmed. And June getting closer and closer made him anxious for no good reason...

He backed away from the window and walked to the door, ushering the dogs and brain bot away so they didn't run out. "I'll be back. I have to say hi to my friends, see how they are doing." He needed to talk to someone who would respond back. He closed the door behind him and began to walk. Once he got close enough he sent the two a wave. "Hey there you two!" He glanced at a strange arrow in a tree. "Practicing some archery?" Well that was strange, where was the bow..?

Impa couldn't help but to smile proudly at Zelda's expert shot with her bow. The power might not have been what she knew the disguised princess was truly capable of, but all of the skill was there, and it was still wonderful to see both that ability returned as well as the sheer excitement in her charge's eyes.

"Excellent work, Zelda," said Impa, turning her gaze to the disguised princess and nodding to her.

"Thank you, Impa," replied Zelda, still grinning quite broadly, both from having been able to fire the light arrow as well as from her guardian's praise. "I don't think it's ready for battle just yet, but I am glad to actually be able to use it again."

"I'm sure you are… your skill has definitely improved even farther than its original level. And perhaps you, Link, and Link could have some fun archery practice sometime."

Zelda's red eyes lit up even more at that, but before she could articulate a response, she found her gaze following Impa's as the two of them looked across the field at an approaching figure. Even before he could wave and greet them, she instantly knew who it was… it was Kev! The disguised princess eagerly returned the wave, soon calling out to him, "Hey Kev!"

"Greetings, Kev! It is great to see you,"
replied Impa, smiling to the Kryptonistanian and returning his wave as well… now this was certainly a pleasant surprise. At his question, she simply shared a glance with Sheik before also looking to the arrow, stating, "Indeed we are. We thought it might be a perfect day to set out and explore the fields with a bit of training."

The same as Impa, Sheik was very happy to see Kev. They had only managed to catch each other a few times in the Sanctuary since the events of the past month, but with as fun as each of those visits turned out to be, she was glad to get to see him in an even better setting. It was always great to see a friend, oftentimes even more so if one had not seen them for a while.

Sheik knew that Kev didn't live in the city, but she had never been fully certain as to where his home was… although given the nice surprise of him coming out to visit them, it appeared that he lived the cottage just across the way. Now that was certainly a nice home… just from the outside, it reminded her a lot of some of the other houses in Kakariko Village. With the sheep and other animals just outside though, it felt a bit more like Malon's house at Lon Lon Ranch. Regardless, she was glad to get to see him, and happy that the trek she and Impa had taken had wound up leading them out near his cottage.

As Kev continued to near their position, Impa was able to tell even better that whilst he was thrilled to see the two of them, further back in his mind he seemed to be rather distracted with something. It was entirely likely that he was still recovering from last month, but even with that, she couldn't help but feel that something else was gnawing away at him. If that was the case, then hopefully their unexpected reunion would help him out with that.

As for Sheik, she didn't have the same skills in perception that Impa did, but she could read just the slightest hint of what her guardian was sensing about him. If their day had sought for them to help him out around their own venture into the grasslands, then that was more than fine by her!

Before he had even walked up to them completely, little Sheik recognized him!~ Although of course, it was hard not to. Mouthless scaly green alien dressed in black and blue? It turns heads.

Still, the two of them being happy to see him made him happier in return, and when he got close enough, he scooped up Sheik and gave 'him' a hearty hug. "Its great to see you two, too!" At her mention of it being a great day to practice training for archery, He glanced around the grasslands and nodded. "I bet. It hasn't been this nice out for a while." Who's got two thumbs and is sick and tired of Wintery weather? This guy right here.

Realizing that he was still holding the young boy in a bear hug, he placed him back down and ruffled his hair affectionately, and gave Impa a one armed hug. "Are you just training for archery, or other stuff too?" Being around the two of them was successfully distracting him from his earlier mood and he was happy for it. He was tired of being melancholy, but every month that came and went seemed to just bring more stuff to beat him down. So much for May flowers...

Sheik grinned even more as Kev picked her up into a mighty hug, and despite her current position off the ground, she returned it with a strong one of her own. Whether it had been part of a day or even more than a year, reunion hugs truly were the very best. As Kev set her back on the ground, Sheik soon found herself closing her right eye and smiling further as her friend tousled her hair in what seemed to be becoming a trademark thing between the two of them, one that she didn't mind it at all and in fact rather liked.

As Kev hugged Impa and asked about what all they were training in, Sheik spoke up again. "Other stuff too, actually. Aside from just setting out and enjoying the day, we thought we might train for various things. That light arrow was just a skill of mine that I hadn't been able to use since I arrived on the Breach… I seem to have just unlocked it again, though."

Impa smiled a touch more and returned Kev's hug, very glad that their friend had deiced to venture out and visit them. It had already started off as a great day, and this simply added to it all.

She couldn't help but agree that he was quite right in that it had not been this nice out for a while. Even after the world had been restored both from the datamine release and the total reboot, the weather itself had been all right, but today was the first truly gorgeous day that they had had in a long time. She hoped that both of the Links would be able to get out and enjoy it too, but today seemed as though it was thwarting them between work at the inn and other related duties in town. If nothing else, perhaps she and the disguised princess could bring them something back from their journey today, no matter where it took them.

"Better to unlock it than to have to relearn it all together,"
stated Impa, nodding at the smile she in turn received from Sheik. Glancing to Kev, she added, "He's making it a fun challenge for me to teach him new things considering how much he's already learned, but practicing those skills and honing them even better is the key before moving on to even more advanced techniques."

"I know much of the magic, but I'm still working on improving that and learning even more of the Sheikah skills," added Sheik, somehow managing to suppress a slight blush at Impa's praise.

"And you're doing very well," said Impa, nodding to Sheik. It was quite true… for a Hylian to be able to learn the Sheikah abilities that she had thus far both with and without the aid of magic, even the Sage of Shadow herself was impressed. She had no doubt in her mind about her skills given just who her student was, but it still made her even prouder to be her guardian. Turning back to Kev, Impa smiled a bit and gestured to her friend. "You're welcome to join us, if you like."

Kev trilled softly when Sheik returned his hug, and he closed his eye when Kev ruffled his adorable blond hair. Kev always did enjoy tussling the hair of younger citizens! His hug moved to Impa, whose smile got a bit bigger, and he turned to listen as Sheik answered his question.

"Aah, that happens sometimes. For a long while, I wasn't able to use my mental suggestion! Something about this place kinda takes away your powers at first. I'm happy you unlocked your light arrow skill though!" It was always fun to have an ability granted back to you!

Kev nodded as Impa spoke. "Practice makes perfect, right?" That was what he always heard at least. But from what he had experienced, it was quite true! "You guys must be very smart to know magic like that!" He turned his head back to Sheik as he spoke again, making a small impressed noise. "What kinds of skills are Sheikah skills?" He asked curiously. And he couldn't help but notice that Sheikah sounded like Sheik. Coincidence? Or was he named that for a reason?

He blinked, surprised at being invited to join them. "Are you sure? I don't want to interrupt anything important.." He glanced back at his cottage. He had fed the animals not too long ago, so if he left for a while, they'd be fine. And Zeke had been taught that if the dogs whined at the back door, to open it for them...and Shally had her litter box.

He turned back to Impa and Sheik and nodded. "I'd love to join you two!" This day was getting better and better.

"Mental suggestion? Interesting… I do not believe I have seen you use that ability yet," mused Impa. Admittedly, she was curious to see how that skill of Kev's would pair up with her own Eyes of Truth… perhaps that could be something for the two of them to test out sometime later.

[color=#6633CC"indeed it does," [/color]said Impa, returning Kev's nod regarding the positive effects of practice She smiled at his praise regarding their collective skill with magic, and after exchanging a glance with Sheik, turned back to their friend and explained, "You know how as a Kryptonistanian you have certain abilities that are innate to you, and skills that can be learned but are more of a trademark of your people? The Sheikah skills are much the same. Our people, the Sheikah, are known as the Shadow Folk… and aside from being able to learn magic and combat skills, we are a race of warriors gifted in stealth, agility, and keen insight."

Pausing for a moment and producing a Deku Nut in her left hand, Impa soon continued, stating, "Some skills, such as the Sheikah Vanish that you have seen both of us use can be taught and used with a Deku Nut, but the more innate version based more on focusing your own abilities does not necessarily require one."

Turning the Deku Nut over so that Kev could get a good look at it if he liked, Impa added, "Now other abilities are natural, whether one decides to hone them or not… one such example are my Eyes of Truth, which enable to me to see past illusions and better discern the truth behind most things. I've always had that skill, but I have sought to improve it further."

Sheik's eyebrows raised at Kev's note of his 'mental suggestion'. Now that sounded like a very interesting ability… one that she might have to ask him about later. She nodded at what he said about the Breach taking away some of their powers, and soon smiled again when he said that he was happy for her having unlocked one of her skills. "Thanks Kev."

As Impa explained some of the details behind Sheikah skills, Sheik watched her guardian before also turning to Kev, chiming in with, "As far as stealth goes, that can be anything from fighting to just being sneaky. I know that sometimes either of us might appear without anyone detecting us, and that's usually not either of us actually trying to be stealthy… it's just natural, but we can take some steps to diminish that effect."

When their friend asked if it was all right if he could join them, both Sheik and Impa nodded to him simultaneously. Before either of them could verbally confirm this though, he checked on his cottage, turned back to them, and enthusiastically accepted the invite, soon causing both the Sheikah and especially the disguised princess to smile further.

"Great!" exclaimed Sheik, very glad to be able to spend more time with Kev outside of the Sanctuary… and that sea monster's belly for that matter.

"Excellent, we're glad to have you," said Impa, feeling much the same as her charge did. Hopefully, this would prove to be a wonderful afternoon for all three of them. After all, good times with great company always made for a fun day.

Ah, right! These two didn't know of his mental suggestion power! Honestly, very few probably did, besides the ones present for the fight against Glitch!X or Otokoyo. During the fight against Glitch!X, he had commanded the Hellboy shade to stab himself...and he had taken Kev and stabbed him as well. Right through the chest. At least while fighting demons in Otokoyo, he had done much better and had made a demon destroy itself multiple times.

"No you haven't~! Neither of you, I think. Its a powerful version of telepathy, where I can implant an idea or action into someone else's mind. It comes in handy when it works correctly!" Definitely one of his more favorite powers, although he only used it in more dire situations. It was a culture taboo to use such a power irresponsibly. He gave Sheik another ruffle of her hair. "You're welcome~"

He nodded as he listened to Impa with great interest. So Sheikah was a species name! And since he was assuming that Impa and Sheik were both Sheikah's, it seemed red eyes was a species trait! Skin and hair color were different, but it could be simple diversity, right? Not all members of a species look alike after all.

So Sheikah, or Shadow Folk, had specific skills with magic and combat, and had great ability with stealth, agility, and insight. He leaned in as she produced a nut of some kind, calling it a deku nut. "How can a nut be used to teach and use skills like that? Is it a special nut?" He asked curiously. She handed it to him and he rolled it around his his hands curiously. "Can you two do the vanish move without the nut?" He wouldn't be surprised if at least Impa was powerful enough to not need it.

One natural ability Impa had was one that let her see through illusions and 'see the truth'. Kev handed the nut over. "That sounds like a nifty ability to have! You can't be easily tricked~!" Sheik spoke next, tossing in his own two cents. "How DO you guys appear like that? Can you walk in shadows?" He asked excitedly, always interested in hearing about other species. The two nodded and when Kev gave his answer, Impa smiled, and he bet beneath his bandages, Sheik was smiling too.

"Glad to join you two!~" He was looking forward to spending time with these two outside of just the Sanctuary as well.

"I see… that sounds pretty impressive," said Impa, her eyebrows raising slightly at Kev's description of his mental suggestion ability. "I imagine it would take quite a bit of authority to command such a power, as well as wisdom to use it responsibly."

As Kev leaned in to study the Deku nut and ask about it, Impa nodded and offered it to him so that he could get a better look. It was always intriguing to have someone ask about such a commonplace item from Hyrule, and the Sheikah couldn't help but think that her friend might find this item and many more from their home world to be rather interesting. "The Deku nut is indeed quite a special nut… when it is thrown, it actually produces a blinding flash. This can be used to stun enemies of course, and amongst the Sheikah, we can use it to disappear."

At Kev's question regarding the Sheikah Vanish, Sheik chimed in, stating, "I can do it without the Deku nut, but I'm still working on perfecting that version of it. Impa however has mastered it."

    "Thank you, Sheik,"
said Impa, grinning slightly to her charge, feeling her heart warm even further at the kind praise. It was an innate ability of hers that she had trained hard in order to perfect, but it still made her feel quite special to hear such a compliment from the disguised princess. As Kev handed the Deku nut back to her and made a note on her Eyes of Truth, Impa carefully tossed the nut into the air before catching it, saying, "It most certainly is, and you're quite right… I just hope my gaze is never unintentionally intimidating."

When Kev asked how the Sheikah appeared in the way they did, Sheik and Impa exchanged a glance before the disguised princess said, "I'm just good at being stealthy, I guess. I can't walk in the shadows or use them to move around myself, but Impa was able to do that even before she became the Sage of Shadow."

"Stealth is the biggest key, really… moving silently can make a world of difference even without moving through the shadows," explained Impa. "I'm still regaining some of my full power in that regard, but as Sheik said… yes, I can effectively walk in the shadows."

"That technique isn't necessarily the key to the Sheikah Vanish since shadows aren't always present, though, but you could think of it as being related," added Sheik. After catching a smile and nod from Impa, she stated, "The way that we appear like that is we focus on a point where we want to be… then, we kind of start to fall in the direction we're moving. It's… pretty much an invisible lean because it's so sudden, but then it's just a very, very quick move that you can't see the middle of. It's basically a really focused quick move, and we can use a Deku nut before it to block out our travel path, whether we're trying to stun someone or not."

Sheik waited a couple of moments before saying, "I hope that makes sense… it's kind of tricky to describe."
