Mother's Day: A joy for some...

Post by Ayalah Levi on Sun May 13, 2012 7:31 pm

    13th May 2012
    1800hrs

... But a Downer for others. One such of them being Key'Esop, She had been not too happy these past few days, and Mother's day was a big one for her, though, not as some would suspect, due to not having a mother, but infact the opposite in a sense...

She had not always been so down on Mother's Days, it had only really start to hit her the past few years, progressively worse each year, it had been eleven years, since she had her child, three since she saw her, she'd made an issue of keeping her distance, it was best for the child, but that one day, she couldn't help but just try to even see her, from a crowed, to know she was well, in good hands, it did make her happy...

But now? No, she was not happy, her heart was heavy, it was something she'd hidden from everyone, so that it could never be used against her...

So, while all the others were happy and cheery and celebrating this day, Key sat at a bench, staring out aimlessly at whatever was infront of her, she felt hollow, aimless, the light wind blowing her hair over her face, she did not even bother to shift it, not knowing or caring how long she had been ther, she hadn't descended to tears yet, but it wouldn't be beyond her to...

Mother's Day was only barely on the radar for one Barney Calhoun. It had been years since he'd celebrated it, or had someone to celebrate it with. It wasn't that he didn't care about his dear Mother, but she'd died before the Combine even invaded Earth. No, Mother's Day wasn't much to Barney, except for a brief, passing nostalgia.

His mother would have been proud... well, actually, no, she'd probably have hit him upside the head if she'd known it had taken him this long to actually get a room, and go and buy himself some clothes. And then she'd have scolded him for not acting his age, and taking care of himself properly. Good ol' mum.

    Man, he missed her.

Point was, Barney finally had a place to stay, and a few things to put in it, as well. (Not to mention, something or other to wear, besides his uniform.) And he didn't intend on spending one more minute in aforementioned living quarters than he had to. Which was why he was out here, in the park. He liked the park. It was quiet, and peaceful, and green, and...

    Hmm. Occupied.

The former security guard spotted Ms. Key'Esop well before he'd come anywhere in earshot, and, honestly, gave some serious consideration to just giving her a wide berth. They hadn't exactly gotten off on the right foot, after all. But, something stopped him. She looked... well, if he didn't know any better, he'd have said forlorn.

Ah, damn me and my good nature. With a small sigh, Barney let his feet carry him on over towards Key's bench, stopping a few feet away. And, gave her an amiable nod. "Evenin', Ms. Key'esop. You doin' alright?"

The presence of another did not fill the gap, did not fill the hollow, She still felt empty, gutted, cold, oh so very cold... She didn't respond immediately, Taking a deep breath, collecting her own thoughts to converse with the other being talking to her, trying to re-connect herself with whatever reality you could call this..

She finally looked over, her face only further screamed the hollowness she felt, she sighed deeply, She spoke up, albeit weakly, "Evening, Calhoun... Not particularly.... I guess you could say".

Key didn't hold anything against him, he was just human, much like herself, flawed, she did not hold race against people, in most cases, the Brutes being a huge exception to that, and the Jackals... but that wasn't important today...

With the way Key was looking, Barney would literally have to be blind, deaf, and a thousand miles away not to be able to figure that out for himself. At least she was being honest about it. He'd hate to have to call somebody who was already wallowing in that dark pit of despair a liar.

Absentmindedly, he reached up to rub the back of his neck, a gesture of awkwardness he'd never really been able to shake. Barney had been withholding judgement, when it came to Key'esop. There was a lot about the lady that he probably could have admired, except that she seemed so damn cold and uncaring most of the time. And her attitude to the near-end of the world, last month, had never quite sat well with him.

But he couldn't just walk off and leave her there to wallow in her own misery. Nothing good ever came of that. (And, he ought to know, he'd been doing plenty wallowing himself, lately.) With a small sigh, Barney nodded to the bench. "Mind if I join ya?"

Well, had Barney gone off and left her, it would not of changed much, she didn't particularly care right now either way what happened, she wasn't particularly in the mood to either, she was just feeling in general down...

She took quite a while to look up and respond to the question posed to her, and nodded slowly, "If... if you wish....".

There had been much weighting on her mind over the past few days, but most of it she would rather keep to herself, she never expected anyone else to to worry about her burdens, not that anybody ever did, as scarce few knew in the first place. She was good at hiding things, this was usually one such thing, so far she had only let terra into the details, and preferred to keep that way, as said before, she did not like burdening others with her own problems, they were hers, and nobody else's.

There were things she wanted to tell, things she didn't, things she felt she couldn't, some things you don't splurt out, Key, even in this state was capable of such, how much she would digress, only she knew that...

Taking that as about as much of an invitation as he was going to get, Barney took a seat next to her on the bench, with an unshakable sensation of deja vu. He'd done this before; hell, it wasn't that long ago that he'd been in her shoes. It was strange to think that he and Key might be anything alike. And, truth be told, there wasn't that much about them that was similar, except for this: They were both private people. Their secrets were their own, the wounds on their soul were not bared for the world to see. They dealt with this in different ways, obviously. He compartmentalized, and she isolated herself.

But, either way... every so often, you had to take out the old memories, and the old scars, and air them out a bit. Otherwise, they'd fester. Barney had his own strategy for coping with those moments, and it invariably involved alcohol. He didn't have a clue what Key did to cope. But, she couldn't have found a better ear to pour her secrets into. Because, if Barney didn't share his secrets, he sure as hell didn't share anyone else's.

Of course, that didn't mean she was going to blurt out everything to him. He knew that perfectly well. And a question like So, what seems to be the problem? generally just put people on the spot, and rarely got a straight answer.

"If I had t' guess, I'd say you haven't been having a great day..."

Key'Esop has multiple ways of dealing with it, one such was just absorbing the peace and calm in any serenity, it was something her cave was good for... unlike most other humans, Key'Esop could not resort to alcohol to cope, as it had no effect on her.

Probably the biggest issue right now with Key'Esop is that she had lost the steam she had 'gained' that kept her going and busy and away from this for the past seven years mostly, Free the wings of a bird and some bollocks would try to shoot the bird...

Enough of similes and metaphors and all that, this RPer is already tired of studying the mechanics of the english language.

Key looked somewhat toward Barney, and as empty as she had been sounding, replied, "No, I have not... it's been a... tough... few days...", She looked enough a mess to show that too, not as in torn or tatty clothes, but more her face, it was weary, worn, depressed...

"Well, y'look like hell." Yes, that was very tactful. And, perhaps he was wrong to think so, but he didn't think Key would take offense to bluntness. He didn't know her well enough to be sure what she'd think of pity, but if she really was anything like him, the answer was probably not well.

Barney didn't smile, and the words didn't hold any sort of mirth or gentle mockery with them. Just an honest observation. "Anything in particular happen in the last couple of days?"

Somehow, he doubted it. It hardly seemed possible that something or someone around here could affect Key'esop enough to put her in this mood... but, then, he'd been wrong before. Barney supposed maybe Livewire could have gotten to Key, but the young cybertronian was the only one he'd seen the former ONI agent really warm up to. No, if Barney had to place a bet, it was that this wasn't fallout from something recent.

Key did not care much for what other people thought of her, so someone being pitieous, in a situation like this, she did not mind. "Yeah... looking like hell would some it up, being stuck in it...". Mentally at least.

No was the answer with regards to livewire, it had not been her fault, even so, livewire's innocence made her very forgiving, so fallouts would be hard, unless she knocked on swindle's door with a long barrel.

To be honest with herself, she could not blame it all on one particular event, collaborations of loss, fuckups, and bad mistakes, Barney may have known her to be a cold, and very uncaring person, but she was not always like this... no... she once used to be alot more... human... it is comparable to what has happened to Tally over the years, but much more, and for longer, she had heard how tally had changed, and saw, even vaguely, herself in that...

Ah. Yeah, he did know, just a little too well. Barney nodded, slowly, and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "You're dealin' with it all just fine, keepin' it together, until something... maybe just one tiny little thing... strikes you just right and your defenses comes tumbling down."

He could understand that. He'd turned to humor to cope, himself. And here, he'd had a hard time warming up to people and letting his guard down. Once upon a time, back in the good old Black Mesa days, he would have buddied right up with the friends he was making, here. Now, though... Now it was hard to forge new bonds, lay down new roots, when the old ones had been severed so abruptly.

Had it been the same with Key? Its possible he'd judged her a tad harshly. But, the fact remained, he didn't know much about her at all.

"True... perhaps". She sighed, looking blankly at a bird that had found a nice spot for it's self on the grass, and sat down...

Key did not turn to humor, she didn't cope because she didn't hang on suffering as much as she could help it, it was her cold heart that had protected her, made her what she needed to be. and it was the reason why she tended to be a loner, further reinforced by the job requirements.

Key preferred that less be known about her, not in any offense to barney, he was probably a good man, but ratherred he know as much as he needed to and that be that, would that be the case here? who knew?

He hadn't really expected the straight question to get him very far, so her response didn't come as a great surprise, or particular let down. The words everyone makes mistakes was at the tip of his tongue, before he caught himself. Trite cliches had never made him feel any better. And, it insulted Key's intelligence, to suggest she didn't know that already. Instead, Barney took a moment to really think about what she'd said. Now, and before.

"From the stuff you've mentioned... Sounds like you've always had a lot of responsibility on your shoulders." It wasn't exactly asking her to elaborate. Honestly, he didn't need details if she didn't feel like giving them. He'd be a little surprised if he actually managed to get her to open up that far. But, he figured, there had to be something she'd be willing to share. She'd given them bits and pieces, in Sanctuary. And, maybe, it'd help keep her mind off other things. Or, not. He got the sense she was reluctant to tell him much, and for that, he could hardly blame her. It wasn't like they were friends, really. Acquaintances, maybe, but not the type of person you shared all your dark secrets with.

Then again, he wasn't asking her to. He was just... offering an open ear, if she had anything she wanted to get off her chest.

Now, Had Barney said those words, he would of surely regretted those words, such an insult would be a painful mistake for him. but Luckily, for him, he did not speak up with it.

"You could say that... I guess...". She had always had insane amounts of responsibility on her shoulders, whether it be from being responsible for the assassination of many targets, to watching and trying to hopelessly save her fellow helljumpers, the responsibilitiy, and the guilt along with it, and on a more personal level, giving away her only child, because she could not trust herself to raise the child. There was only one person here who knew of this, and it would stay that way, people did not need to know that about her, it was one of her more personal secrets, and one of her more saddening ones, for someone who was an orchestrator of death to give away a chance at governing life...

She sighed again, "It's all a very long story... very long....".

That was either an invitation to inquire further, or an attempt to dissuade him from doing so. Barney couldn't honestly tell which. It was also possible it was both. In his experience, more often than not, people didn't really know what they wanted. Key, though... She was a very private person. A very isolated one, largely by design. It didn't mean she didn't have something to get off her chest.

"You said you'd saved the world a couple of times." It was, sort of, a leading statement, rather than a question. Barney had a feeling he might not get to the heart of the matter, but talking about something that seemed to bother her in the past might at least get near it. (Or, it might just shut him down, cold. But, at least he would have tried.)

"Only because the presence of me and my team...". Had they not the been there, there would of been no humans there to try and activate the rings with. "It is nothing to be admired, nobody knew... nobody cared. Merely duty".

She was a person who preferred to do such releasing alone, away from distractions, he had half a mind to go away and do that, she didn't like to drag others down, and that is exactly what she felt like right now, so she came to a descision, "I'm sorry.... you should not have to see me like this, Thank you for the ... concern, but none of you should have to bear what I have...".

She paused for a moment, before getting up and look at him, not giving him much chance to reply, "Again, my apologies, Good evening, and take care". And with that said, she turned around, walked a few steps, then disappeared in a flash of green
